Let's start with my food it was ready by the time I got there; that's the only reason they get 5 stars for service. They only get a 2 star because I love mango lassi but I didn't take a picture of it because it was halfway finished by the time I got home. The food was tasteless the Bryiani had no type of seasoning, I also asked for it to be spicy but that wasn't even applied. I couldn't even enjoy it and I've eaten at many Indian restaurants before. H2W have added new 'fusion' dishes such as 'butter chicken over pasta' served with a fascinating wine cooler that makes a mimosa seem like airplane drink. This has become a new fav. We have the tandoori shrimp often - always prepared extra spicy for me and medium spicy for my companion. Rasmali (cheesecake) is just sweet enough - It's so good I want to smear it on my face! One can choose lamb or mutton for the vindaloo. Understand that our take is that everything here is cooked to order unlike some other Indian places not far away.... The owner is now the host/waiter and he takes care that your experience is top notch. They have upgraded the dining room since I was there last. Keep up the good work! CC Fraud, Total Incompetence, or Both? ALERT FIRST: My partner and I were thrilled to finally be able to try HWY to India, Ocean Springs, Bienville, St. after weeks of wait. But the next day when I looked at my bank account, I was aghast. I had left a $12 cash tip handed directly to the server but was CHARGED, without my consent, another $10 gratuity--and I present the proof in photos. Two days later, I confronted our waiter and he apologized saying, " 'They' (bookkeeping?) was new and had made a mistake." He then returned $20 to me; I guess the remaining $2 I paid him was fair enough in his view. I let it go until I read an article announcing the newly opened eatery from the Sun Herald. In it, said owner, was interviewed at his Hattiesburg location reporting him to have "studied culinary arts" in Mumbai and had worked at the Hyatt Regency in NOLA. Here's the deal: I'm a retired Professional Chef who worked on the NOLA circuit with some of the finest and well known NOLA chefs. I also had several of my own restaurants. My background is in Classical French Cuisine, I am a Saucier in specialty, and I was trained in the old school brigade system. I also attended a prominent Culinary Arts school, only THEN did I acquire my coveted apprenticeship in the North Shore's French finest and most respected establishment. So I say this. I once, but not uncommonly, met a guy from Louisiana who told me he had been a HVAC tech. "Everyone" loved his red beans and rice, so he opened a "Cajun" restaurant in Tennessee. That was the extent of his training, and I have heard similar stories. His food was bland, not well prepared, and frankly nasty. If this owner of HWY to India, with 3 stores open and all these "credentials" was the real deal--he and his team would KNOW it is illegal to add any new amount of remuneration to a signed ticket. That is a legally binding contract, and they did not have my permission to do that. That is theft. Furthermore, in my following food review, I make the case why "studying" culinary arts and "working at" a high end establishment does not make one a chef. I have had plenty of dishwashers work in my stores, and I have "studied" many cuisines but I am not an expert in them all. The Food. Indian cuisine is one of the most complex there are. You don't just open a spot and be great without proper training. It takes years, as it did in my profession. Sure you can open a jar of this and that and scam folks or you can do OJT from a cookbook, but you better have it together if you are going to charge the prices this place does. And with that in mind--check your receipt. The prices on the menu ARE NOT the same as on your check. You can see for yourself that the prices they charged us are HIGHER than on the menu. Fraud seems to run ripe here right from the get go. We ordered a full order of Tandoori chicken thinking we would have some to take home since we live 2 hours away. The full order for over $20 included 3 small legs, 1 small thigh, and a quarter of a full breast. Let's be clear, that's one breast side cut in half the size of the thigh--all bone in. It was served on a fancy style on a sizzling hot fajita plate. What makes Tandoori chicken red? Red Kashmiri chili powder. Or why not just use red food dye that some places do. And that's exactly what it tasted like because it had no taste at all other than the char. In fact, if they had marinated it in yogurt, garam masala, ginger, fenugreek, and the rest of the required spices it would have tasted like something other than unsalted grilled chicken. It had zero flavor of any spice. I wanted Butter Chicken as well but when I asked the server about it he said it was right there--and pointed to the Tikka Masala. Right off I knew this guy had no clue what he was talking about and I was nervous. These dishes have the same mother sauce, but are completely different in spice profiles. Butter chicken is richer and more fragrant. Tikka, which is less so, is pretty bland and is a favorite in the UK. I opted for the Chicken Madras which was advertised as having coconut milk, mustard, and curry leaf with a creamy texture. Not. I guarantee you this was a cheap commercial mix. I started to think that the only thig Indian in this place is the sign name. The Mango Lassi had enough mango(?) in for color, but no flavor and tasted of nothing less than a pale-yellow, thick yogurt not even filling the plastic cup for over $8. Keep in mind the prices on the menu were cheaper than the actual prices charged. I thought maybe they had included the tax on the receipt, but no--they added the tax on top of that too as you can see. The whole meal was almost $70 with a card surcharge, paying just under $80 for a no frills lunch. read more

I am not well experienced with indian cuisine but I have always enjoyed trying new things and even though this was my 2nd time trying this type of food I could tell that the owner knows what he is doing and he is an expert at his craft. The service was perfect and friendly. The food was absolutely delicious and the owner said that they make their own yogurt for their Lassis which is a very refreshing dairy drink. (I got the mango Lassi). I also got the samosas and Chettinad curry, both of which were delicious. I am only in town for 1 week and it was so good that I think I will be back again. Exceptionally good meal. Everyone in our party agreed they were THE BEST samosas we had ever had (party consisted of 2 "foodies" and 1 picky-eater!) The owner served us himself and checked in consistently to ensure everything was to our liking. Really genuine and kind person. 3 main dishes we all shared were excellent. Naan was perfect. The chai, rose milk, and sweet lassi were also exceptional! I really like the bar seating. The whole space was clean and well-laid out. I'm from the Bay Area but my father lives here, and I'm sure he will become a regular! Not sure what the first review was all about but it sounds like an honest misunderstanding which can happen with a brand new restaurant. After speaking with the owner at length, he does have lots of experience but is learning new point of sale software, which I can empathize with a learning curve as a small business owner myself! What a fun place. Here's the deal, there are 3 Indian places on the gulf coast, Orchid in Gulfport, Indian Delight in Ocean Springs, and HWY to INDIA also in OS. All three are fabulous and the people that run them are wonderful. That being said, each has something that makes them a bit more appealing. For me and my family HWY to INDIA is our place. Some of favorite dishes excel here over the other restaurants those include amazing Samosas that far exceed those from either of the other two places. They could easily be a meal on their own, Lamb Karahi that has a hearty bell pepper cilantro touch that I've not experienced anywhere else, and one of my summertime favorites Shrimp Korma that fills my nose with an amazing curry and coconut scent and my mouth with perfectly cooked gently spiced shrimp. I highly recommend trying all the different places, but I find myself recommending HWY to INDIA just a little stronger. read more

Unlike most Indian restaurants, Hwy to India focuses on South Indian cuisine with rice crepes (dosa) with a good assortment of sides. The medhu vadai (ground lentil doughnuts) were the best I've had anywhere. The service was very friendly and the prices quite reasonable.
