Y'all. We eat Indian on the regular. Many of our friends are Indian. We CHOW DOWN on Indian. This was the worst I've had. First, there was no music. When we walked in the server (the only person in the restaurant we could see at the time--6:30pm) said "just sit wherever you'd like, you'll see some tables are dirty." Why were they dirty? There were at least 4 dirty tables, so I'm not sure what was going on there. We ordered drinks then food. Cold drinks are served in these neat metal cups. Food is served as expected, in metal "family style" containers. The samosas were greasy (beyond greasy). The mint chutney had green dye in it--I'd never seen anything like it! It kept coloring rice, the samosas, and our teeth. Totally bizarre. And the flavors were all wrong. My husband ordered a tea at the beginning of our visit and as we finished she brought the tea over. We love chais and drink them whenever possible, so to have one overwhelmed with seasoning and not sweetened at all was nauseating. We both tried it and left it full on the table. It passed my 12 hour test (I didn't get sick) but we did leave promptly and go eat somewhere better (check my reviews to find it). Overall, a hard, hard pass for future. read more

I wanted Indian food but wasn't able to go anywhere due to my car needing repairs. Checking Uber eats, I saw that Yak The Kathmandu Kitchen was an option. I've heard of it but I'd never been to it. My curiosity prompted me to try them. Chicken tikka masala was the obvious choice and I also decided to order naan. The restaurant is a considerable distance away from my house so I expected a longer wait for the arrival of my order. I believe the wait time was supposed to be 30-55 minutes. I'm not sure when the order arrived but it didn't seem like a particularly long time. When I picked up the order from outside, the food still felt really warm. I have to say that I'm not much of a spicy food eater. My chicken tikka masala spice choice was mild. I believe you get to choose from mild, medium, spicy, and extra spicy. The mild was just enough spice for me and I loved it. It smelled so good and the flavor didn't disappoint. The naan was delicious as well. It was fresh and cooked to perfection. Love coming to this place every time we come to Mobile. The lassis are very good but be warned that the chai is extremely hot. We go to Yak the Kathmandu every time we are in Mobile. The food is awesome. the restaurant atmosphere isn't exciting but we go for the food. The servers never seem to speak much english but they use a QR code on a table tent. You can order electronically and they bring the food out to your table. But really great food! read more

4 star food. 2 star the way you order food and the QR Code menu lacks a lot of what the takeout menu has on it. For example: tandoori chicken on printed menu but nowhere on the digital menu. We got butter chicken, lamb vindaloo, naan and samosas which were all good. The QR code menu you have to scroll on your phone then pay and tip before any food or service rendered. Then they ask for a lot of info to finally pay. Very cumbersome in my opinion. It also costs them $ as you will not go through the process twice to order anything else you might like. Service was dropping off the food and no return to table which was fine. Not sure we would return to eat here. Yelp had a buffet listed but none when we went for lunch. This place has a very authentic appeal. Restaurant s decorated keeping in mind the Nepalese festivities. We ordered appetizers for a small snack meal which included veg chili momos, papdi chat, pani puri and veg spring rolls. They were out of spring rolls and they happily replaced with vegetarian chowmein. After these fulfilling dishes , We ordered masala chai and Salted lassi! Only thing we were left perplexed by is that there is no one to greet you and you have to order food it at self service kiosk. Even though it disappointed me in start , but their food made my day! They did have posters their which said "Let us cook delicious food for you , pardon our service" . For me , this was their honesty and awareness of the situation. If you happen to peek through the curtain and actually get into the see the kitchen, it is the filthiest kitchen I've ever seen in my life, dried food on the walls, bathrooms are filthy, broken doors, and smells bad. left the dirty dishes from previous customer, waitress touches the water you drink from with her hands in the place where your mouth would go, so be sure to use a straw. It has a hint of sweetness that I love. I also enjoy the chow mein. It always has plenty of meat and the noodles have a great flavor. Most people probably don't go to Mobile for the Indian food (let alone the Nepali food), but I was satisfied with my ample takeout order. We asked for spicy and my curries delivered a fast-onset kick that cleared the sinuses. Among the hard-to-find dishes that I ordered were chole bhatura (a large fried bread with chickpeas for dipping), an aloo tama bodi (a black-eyed pea curry with bamboo shoots and potatoes that seems oddly at home in the South), and vegetable momo (dumplings with cabbage and a few other shredded veggies and a perplexing but delicious sauce). I struggle to find any of these niche vegetarian dishes in New Orleans, and they were all pretty well executed here. Takeout was an adventure. There are some issues with a bad link to their website when you google it. When we called, our order got through fine, but they neglected to mention they were having some kind of credit card processing trouble and were only accepting cash. Fortunately, I'm the sort of increasingly retro gentleman who does carry cash, and they at least had the sense to forgive me the two pennies on the end of the price rather than to try to make change for that. Apparently there is a lunch buffet but it did not look huge and I would sooner order off the menu. They had a number of specialty Indian grocery items on sale in the middle of the restaurant. The interior was pleasant enough to eat in, but if I ever did return, it would probably be to takeout again following (or preceding) a day on the coast. Chicken biryani is my new favorite thing right now. And this place has a most delicious version of it! It has super tender chicken thigh meat in it and I don't know what they marinate it in but it's so yummy! They have a spice range that goes from Mild to Spicy. (I do think I'll order medium next time though! Phew! Lol it was so hot!!!) We also got the Chicken Tikka Masala and it was superb! It comes with Basmati rice. It's still my favorite food in Mobile. However, the atmosphere has changed a good bit. Like everyone, they are trying to stay open with staffing shortages. So there's a large kiosk when you walk in with a digital menu. You place your order and pay for it at the kiosk and they bring it to your table. Very impersonal and slightly awkward. We watched a few people fumble through the process. Also, drinks are canned so there are no refills. When you order, decide how many cans you'd like or risk running out. Yak may be a better place for takeout now than dine in, which we observed more delivery orders leaving than people inside. That being said, our waitress was friendly and did come back to check on us. That being said, the Chicken Korma is the best in Mobile. We also love their Coconut chicken, it's not too sweet but very rich without all the cream of the korma. Their chicken kebab was seasoned and tender. Good for picky children or less adventurous types. The naan and poori were both good. We also love their momo, but definitely prefer steamed to fried. It's similar to a potsticker or dumpling and the sauce was really good, creamy with a strong onion flavor. Will always be back. read more

Great lunch buffet! They have it every day starting at 11 am - 3 pm. The exterior wasn't particularly welcoming, but it was nicer inside. There were ~5 tables filled when I came on a Saturday. On weekends, the price was $10 which I thought was a steal for the quality of the food. Small variety, but there was enough to choose from (~8 dishes). My favorite dishes were the lamb and chicken curry. I was surprised that they had so many meat dishes at a buffet-and lamb at that! The dishes are heavy - I wasn't able to eat more than 2 dishes before getting full. Salad bar was a bit dismal but I didn't go there to eat salad so I didn't mind. The rice pudding was great for dessert, with little coconut pieces inside. Sometimes a dish would go empty, but it would be filled relatively quickly. Almost four years ago we visited Yak, and it was over our delicious meal back then that we decided to move to the Gulf Coast. Having completed said move, it seemed appropriate that we go back to Yak for a celebratory dinner, and it was just as tasty now as it was four years ago. My wife leaned more towards their Indian curry offerings, and her fish curry was fresh, well seasoned and very tasty. I tried the Tibetan momo and really enjoyed the flavors. Service was excellent and the prices were very reasonable, and I imagine we'll happily visit the Yak again when we're in town! read more

Yak is absolutely delicious. Not sure if it's a COVID thing or not but when we've been in, we just order at the kiosk and then staff brings out the food and we take ours home to eat. But there are tables in there so they may offer dining as well, just not sure. Must trys are the lamb masala and the cheese naan! Garlic naan is great too.
