This place do have amazing wines but the prices is up there as well. Crisp Chardonnay, even their young come bottle tasted amazing. Sip slowly and you will smell caramel and intense sweetness. But it's not a sweet wine when you drink it. Simply their wine maker tricks. Their syrah is another surprise for me. Very drinkable from the get go and the fragrances are there at beginning as well. Honestly I rarely invest in syrah because it usually take hours to breath and I prefer within an hour. Small wineries with many positive surprises. Only reason for the 4 stars is because the price shocked us a little. It's around $50-150 a bottle. read more

I had the pleasure of visiting Hyde de Villaine for the second time a week ago. Our host Nate was gracious, fun and full of so much knowledge of winemaking and important wine history. HdV is relatively new compared to other established wineries, but my god, I was fortunate to discover them on yelp and pay them a visit. First of all, the tasting experience is wonderful, every single bottle we got to taste has exceptionally high quality. I really liked their Belle Cuisine, which is 60% Merlot and 40% Cab, not a usual blend profile in Napa, but the result is nicely balanced and absolutely delicious. Our guide Eddy, is beyond awesome!! He is the type of guy who's ready to talk with you for hours and hours on any subject on wine, anytime of day. Not only because he's so knowledgeable but also you can tell he has endless passion for what he does. People like this are really the reason why Napa draws me back again and again. Bottom line, this is not a big name winery, at least not yet. But I can guarantee you won't regret if you visit them, I know I will again. read more

I heard about HDV through a trusted colleague that moonlights as a Sommelier at a nearby restaurant. Based on his recommendation, I decided to pay them a visit. They're owned by Larry Hyde of Hyde Vinyards & Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanee Conti in Burgundy, France. Above and beyond the pedigree line, this winery and tasting room are among the more intimate and rustic in Napa. I was treated to a private tasting that was hosted by their in-house wine pro, Lawrence Townsend. He slowly walked us through the wines (tasting lasted almost 1.5 hours) and shared the HDV story from the very beginning. We were pretty curious about their vineyard and their unique style of wines. Lawrence gave us his undivided attention and answered our questions leaving no stone unturned. I certainly left HDV more wine savvy than I was upon sitting down for my tasting. Very educational! about the FABULOUS wine and history of the fruit without ever being pompous or stiff. If you didn't love wine before you will now. Now let's get to it.. I cant really give a review because no one was there. After what I read on food and wine magazine, I could Not pass up the opportunity when I last visited napa. I understand that tasting was by appointment only, so I left a message 2 days in advance, but no one returned my call. Since I was in the area, I decided to drop by and take my chances. The sign is really small so if you are not paying attention, you will just pass it by. After seeing all of these fancy and glamorous wineries in napa, I was stunned when I got there. This really is not a winery, this is a tasting room in someone's backyard. I really looked forward to tasting it. Too bad no one was there. Ps. Few days later I got a call from them. HdV is by appointment only. The staff was friendly, funny and informative. Your tasting & tour is private, so you had the whole place to yourself. You see their stacks of barrels and outside you see the machines they use during harvest time. We were shown and explained the process of harvesting. We got a chance to go inside a barrel. My then-fiancé took me on a trip to Napa and Sonoma wine country for my birthday / as a pre-honeymoon of sorts in the weeks before our wedding, and Hyde / de Villaine Winery was one of the major highlights of our trip. Though he had to make an appointment a week in advance, and there was a $75 fee for private tour/tasting of 6 wines (2 of their "Comandante" wines--a fantastic Chardonnay and a Cabernet Sauvignon--alongside the usual HdV flight of 4 wines ($45)--the de la Guerra Chardonnay, the HdV Chardonnay, the "Californio" Syrah, and the Belle Cuisine, a Merlot-heavy / right-bank Bordeaux blend,--all exquisite), it was well worth it. The fee was waved for a purchase of six bottles, which we definitely took advantage of. The resident Somm was extremely friendly and enjoyed quaffing a few tastings himself with us! He was very knowledgable, and we also got to meet Stéphane Vivier, the French winemaker who seemed an artist at his craft. I could not recommend more this small getaway winery--easy to miss!--and appreciated the rustic, intimate, unpretentious feel which is increasingly hard to find in a Napa Valley marketing itself to wine newbies, bachelorette parties, and weekend get-away-from-the-kids trips for suburbanites. Look out for the "Ysabel" Pinot Noir, which if there existing selection is anything to go by, will be fantastic. A true wine lover's experience. read more

This place was awful, and deserves 0 stars. When we got there we were surprised by how rude our host was, it was almost like she didn't want to be there. After we tasted the first few wines and a short tour she brought us back to the tasting room, where she essentially refused to answer any questions that we had. We are not wine connoisseurs but did want to know more even if they were simple things, it turned out my friend who came with who also knows very little was far more helpful. She simple sat in the corner dead silent and when asked any kind of question she gave an extremely short response. Unfortunately it doesn't end there, when we paid the extortionist prices for what amounted to 30 minutes of silence and sipping passable wine, she promptly took our money and we left. When we got home we found she charged us double and put it all on one card! After notifying them of the error and explaining how utterly disappointed we were by this place, the man on the phone proceeded to talk down to us saying only real wine connoisseurs really go there. This place needs to re-think doing wine tastings and tours if this is the experience they offer. Advice to owner: Close your vineyard read more

First of all, the sign on the street is small, so don't be ticked if you drive by it the first time. I'm guessing most of us did! Last week I met Stephane, the winemaker, AJ the general manager, and Eddie, the new tasting room manager. All were very positive, very we.coming, and genuinely excited to share their wines. I never order Chardonnay, I prefer Pinot Gris or Sauv Blanc, so I was just expecting to 'get through' the Chardonnay tasting. What a surprise! The first Chardonnay was delicious, I immediately wanted more. The 2nd one was silky smooth, incredibly balanced and well made, just a little too pricey for me. I love good Merlot, but get very impatient with all the mediocre ones out there; the great ones are usually too expensive. What a delight to taste the Belle Cuisine, 60% Merlot/40% Cab. Wow! I've been craving a good Merlot and steak ever since. This is a world class good wine for those that love Reds. The Syrah was a perfectly good representative of the varietal, but I must admit the Belle Cuisine had stolen the show for me. I would gladly pair this Syrah with a boneless leg of lamb...but after the Belle Cuisine and a steak. If you're looking for a hidden gem, make the effort to find HDV. When the wines are as nice as the people, it's time well spent. read more

The is a "family venture" between Larry Hyde, who owns Hyde Vineyard in Carneros, and the the de Villaine family of Domaine Romanie Conti. No they do not offer any DRC. They have two chardonnays. Their flagship, HdV, and a more modest one called de la Guerra. The HdV is a serious, long lived wine, with beautiful elegance. They also make a syrah and an merlot dominated bordeaux blend. The winemaker, Stéphane Vivier, is young, French and seems to have a clear vision of where he want to take the wines. Our host was Eddie Townsend. You could not ask for a more knowledgeable, nicer and enthusiastic guide to wines. We had a ball just talking about various wines and the people who make them. HdV is working on a pinot noir. It will probably be one of the most closely watched pinots in California. read more

I was shocked to see that this winery was ranked so highly on Yelp. This is by far one of the worst wineries in Napa. I would avoid this place at all cost and save your $45 for one of the many beautiful wineries located in the area. Hyde de Villaine Wines is terrible because of the location, the price, and the staff. THE LOCATION When you go to the HDV website, you're immediately struck by the lush landscape and rolling hills. The problem? That's not what it looks like once you arrive. Hyde de Villaine Wines is literally located in a strip mall a few doors away from a couple of CVS pharmacies and a local eye center. The facility and surrounding areas are not scenic or beautiful as the pictures would lead you to believe. It is basically a bad version of New Jersey. You can listen to the hum of traffic outside while you sip on mediocre wine. THE PRICE $45 per person?! Some people think, "Oh wow, that's expensive, so it must be good!" Nope, think again. Drinking HDV wine is like tasting Welches grape juice that has been sitting on the kitchen counter for too long. As someone who has traveled extensively across wine country, you can get much better wine for a much better price by just driving 20 minutes to Rutherford. When you see a winery charging this much for a tasting it is because they cannot get enough people in the door. That is definitely the case at HDV. Another red flag: HDV demands that you provide your credit card in advance because they know after you taste the wine you will want your money back. THE STAFF You will notice in the other reviews on Yelp everyone is raving about Eddie and how knowledgeable and nice he is. I think everyone who wrote that must be related to the guy. A couple of days after discovering the place, my friend got lost and could not make it to his appointment and Eddie charged his card ~$200 (even though it doesn't say anywhere on the website he would do this). After my friend tried calling the winery to explain what happened, Eddie would not come to the phone and would only communicate by text message. My friend had to resolve the matter with his bank. In sum, avoid Eddie, avoid HDV, and find some more prominent vineyards in Napa Valley. read more

After 3 days of tastings in wine country (Napa, Sonoma, & Santa Barbara) this place remains my favorite. We came here on the tail end of Day 1. Eddy made it a truly memorable experience. He was candid and educated but, not the least bit snobby, which is surprisingly hard to find. He also gave us some great recommendations and set up our appointment via text. The tasting was a bit pricier ($25) but, waived with the purchase of 3 bottles and worth every cent. I'll be back after I've finished my bottle of De La Guerra. read more

I was incredibly disappointed with the lack of customer service and professionalism this business demonstrated. After looking for great vineyards to experience on our first visit to Napa, a friend had mentioned we should try HDV. After reviewing their website, we decided to pay them a visit. At the time of booking a tasting, the person on the phone, Eddie, requested credit card information. He stated, "We will not charge your card. We only need it to hold the reservation." We provided the requested information and were excited about our visit. On the day of, we contacted HDV to let them know we were running late. Our GPS and phone signals throughout the day kept getting dropped (it's a pretty rural area), and we were finding it incredibly difficult to get around. We, unfortunately, never made it to the establishment because our cell service was terrible. As you can imagine, we were disappointed. However, little did we know, our frustration was only beginning. Late in the evening, we arrived at our hotel and were finally able to receive calls and check email. Imagine our surprise when we discover that HDV had charged us $180 for a tasting we never had without any notice. It was completely surprising, especially considering the proprietor had explicitly said they wouldn't charge the card. Of course, we logged online to review their cancellation policy, and, surprise, surprise- there wasn't one. We contacted HDV the next morning to explain what had happened. We spoke briefly to the manager, who stated Eddie would reach out to us. Instead of calling and demonstrating any sense of empathy, however, Eddie begins texting us, stating that they would not refund the money and that he was "disappointed in us" (I guess for getting lost?). It was shocking. While I can't speak to the wines themselves, I can, wholeheartedly recommend skipping this one. read more

This was the last stop on day one of our Napa Valley trip. When we arrived we were greeted by a friendly tour guide who knew us by name and was waiting for us. Our name was on the tasting menu which was very unique and pleasant. The winery is very small, especially compared to the other wineries that we had visited that day, but that made for an intimate tasting experience. We got a tour of the facility, a tasting straight out of the barrel of a new release and at least five glasses of very generously poured wines in addition to the history of the winery and a few good stories from our guide. Good combination of reds and whites. The chardonnay was especially pleasing and each one we tasted had a very unique flavor. Definitely recommend if you want a less commercial experience with excellent service and a friendly tour guide! read more

There is no better Napa Valley Chardonnay made IMHO. What else can i say. Stephane Vivier has got it down. If you like your chardonnay buttery and oakey, do NOT come here. If you like your chardonnay to have fragrances of chardonnay and not oak barrels, then do come here. These wines are great with food, are not heavy, and are very rich, with some minerality. HdV was my husband and I's first stop on our 3 day Napa adventure and now upon returning home, I will say it made our "top 2 favorites" of the trip. Upon arrival, Eddie greeted us and suggested we sit out at the picnic table to enjoy the perfect weather. He had our tasting menu customized with our last name which was a nice touch. He took his time to explain each wine, gave us tastings of others not on our original menu, and let us ask plenty of questions. He even gave us a taste out of the tank for next year's release. We ended up purchasing the 2013 Comandante Chardonnay, 2013 'Ygnacia' Pinot Noir, and the 2013 Viognier. Whenever we go back, we will make sure to visit HdV again. The French inspired wine at HDV was a delightful surprise. We discovered the winery on yelp ( don't pay attention to the one bad review- that guy obviously must have been off his meds that day) this experience is for the true wine enthusiasts who want to taste amazing wine without the commercialism of the usual napa experience. I've not historically been a huge chardonnay fan, but both of the chardonnays they have are truly excellent and have made me a believer! Definitely my favorite in the valley. It's a great place to have a hands-on Napa experience, everyone is extremely knowledgeable and it really feels intimate.
