Visiting Calistoga for the first time and popped into the Hydro bar grill for lunch and cocktails! We were the first in the dining room area and it quickly filled up after we sat down. He shared the charcuterie plate and the "fall of the bone" ribs. Service was great and the cocktails were delicious too!! We will definitely be visiting here again with family in a few weeks. While I'm passing through and was looking for a quick bite to eat, I Hydro Bar & Grill and read their menu out front of the building and decided to check it out, it happened to be during their happy hour. They have one of the best happy hours, offering $5 quesadillas, I love quesadillas so I couldn't pass it up. Next door also had a happy hour with $9 quesadillas, not sure of their size. The restaurant is quite large and feels like a larger diner, pretty empty, which, I'm sure is not the case on the weekends. We were told to sit anywhere and a server quickly approached us and brought us waters. I ordered the quesadillas and a coke and my husband ordered a glass of wine and chips & hummus also on the happy hour menu. Please know the happy hour portions are child size, which is perfect for me. You may have to order a regular size or 2 happy hour orders if you're really hungry. I was pleasantly surprised how tasty the quesadillas were, I told my husband, I think it might be the best quesadillas I ever had. Absolutely delicious. Service was prompt with no frills and nothing exceptional. I would definitely go back for the quesadillas. One of our favorite haunts in Calistoga. Friendly, un-fussy vibe, just excellent food. When I am cheating it is the Reuben Sando. When I am not, it is the fabulous burger, hold the bun. Also, get used to the idea of sharing your meal with flies. There is not much on that menu that can't get you to a cardiologist office, healthy options is not a thing. "Award winning burger" could use a fresher buns and most definitely could be improved by a regular potatoes, not award winning type. Caesar salad was another conversation. The interior is rustic, brick and beams with and open ceiling, booths with a bar. My friends and I were looking for something light before going for mud baths, and you might think bar and grill? They have added a few new salad items to their menu and these are spot on. I went for the Asian Salad with shrimp. A large salad of an assortment of fresh vibrant greens, and half a dozen succulent shrimp, peanuts and sesame oil dressing, with lime wedge. It was quite tasty and served the need. Hydro has been part of Calistoga for years, and I've personally been dining here for nearly two decades. It's always been a fun, lively spot with a casual, small-town vibe, and I've had plenty of good meals and memories here. It's a great place to pop in for a quick bite at the bar and soak in the local energy. That said, my recent visits over the past couple of years have been disappointing. The food quality feels like it's shifted. For example, I ordered a wedge salad that turned out to be just a chunk of iceberg with a little blue cheese dressing--no tomatoes or anything else to make it feel like a full salad. Other dishes we tried also fell flat. Service hasn't been much better; during our last visit, our server seemed more focused on chatting with the owners and regulars at the bar than taking care of us. After a few experiences like this, we've decided not to go back. I'll always appreciate the history of Hydro in town, but unfortunately, it's not the same experience it once was. read more

In between wine tastings in the Calistoga area, we stopped in the center of town to grab some lunch. After discovering cafe Sarafonia had closed for the day, we quickly pivoted and found Hydro Bar back towards the center of town that had gluten-free options for my wife as well as options for myself. The French dip and the cocktails such as the Paper Plane were lovely. It was a nice and quick stop to fill up our stomachs before we embarked on our next tasting. If you are looking for bottles to enjoy, the bar has a nice selection of wines that I think you can take home or back to where you are staying in addition to enjoying on-site. Considering we had been going to vineyards all day, we took the respite and had cocktails instead to break up the pace. Service wasn't anything spectacular, but they were friendly and attentive. The food was pretty decent, but I gave it 4 stars because although that best burger contest burger is twice the price of the regular burger, it is 100% worth it! The service was excellent and loved the Bloody Mary. I had the ham eggs Benedict which was an amazing feast. Everyone in my party loved what they ate. The breakfast wrap was fresh, tasty, and not too heavy with handmade tortillas. The quiche was light and tasty and came with fresh fruit. We had lunch at Hydro Grill as soon as we got to town. We wanted a light lunch so we split their award winning First Place burger from Calistoga's Best Burger Contest. It was delicious. The fries came with garlic which my husband does not care for but he brushed off most of the garlic and actually enjoyed the whole meal. It was early and the place only had a couple of customers in it so the service was great. I loved that we were not charged a split plate fee. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because there was a strange odor in the building that was a bit off putting. But the eating area and bathroom were very clean. read more

3 stars for the service, but more on that below. First what we liked, and what we were disappointed with. We loved the soaring brick walls and timber framing some 20' up in the open ceiling. It had a great relaxed atmosphere. The large bar is at the back but centered, dominating the room, with rustic tables filling the front floor space. The whole atmosphere works and feels comfortable. You walk through the door, are greeted by a chalk on blackboard sign to grab a menu and seat yourself, and that was part of the uniqueness we enjoyed. We 3 went for lunch, with 2 ordering the chicken salad sandwich, which they said was delicious. We had 1 order of sweet potato fries, also delicious. I had the Reuben with fries. The Reuben was served on the swirled rye bread where they mix some white flour in with the rye for that swirled look, rather than a true heavier rye bread. Disappointed but it is fairly rare to find a Reuben on a full on rye bread. We also ordered the appetizer nuts that were to have been toasted in olive oil and thyme the menu said, but they seemed to be something right out of a plastic snack bag you'd find at a store, complete with some sort of dusty coating. 1 sample bite from each of us was enough, disappointed. We also ordered the chili relleno appetizer which was a pleasant surprise for its uniqueness. Flat, filled with black bean paste and guacamole, it was a nice change of pace from the classic chili rellenos. Why 3 stars: With only 3 other tables in the place, we sat for 15 minutes before we were even noticed, and that was only because a man was clearing the table next to us - and we asked for water. His face was expressionless but he got us the water. Another 10 minutes and the waitress came by to receive our orders. She was all smiles, good at her job, and seemed eager to help. It was another 25 minutes or so before we saw any food, and then the spacing between appetizers and entree was almost nil. Three stars--I really wanted to give four, but I just can't. The server who welcomed us was great--friendly, patient, and professional. They were a bit busy, so it took a while for our server to get to us, which was fine. In a good restaurant, you expect to wait. Honestly, if the food comes too fast, I don't trust it. Now, the waitress... it felt like we were bothering her. The customer service didn't feel welcoming. I asked if I could add an egg to my burger, and her response was, "I'm not sure because the kitchen is busy." I would have preferred a simple "No, we can't do that." But the kitchen is too busy to add an egg? That made no sense. She also said she'd check and never got back to me. The burger was fine, but for $80 for two people, I think we could have had better food and service elsewhere. Wouldn't return. read more

I was looking for a place downtown to have brunch. I saw two places close together and noticed one had a waitlist. I looked at the menu to see if it was worth the wait. I then went to look at the Menu at Hydro and noticed that they had some of the same prices and dishes. Decided on Hydro. Cute place inside. They have a wonderful Cocktail menu, not only on each table but artfully done on a chalkboard on the wall. I was seated promptly and was served a fresh cup of coffee that was recently made. As I scanned the menu, the chilaquiles called my name. So glad I chose it too! It comes with eggs which I chose scrambled since I am not a fried egg person. The chilaquiles was some of the BEST I have ever had. In a red sauce with lots of cheese.. not dry either which I have had at other places. Came with very flavorful black beans too. My cup was refilled 3 times and water twice without having to ask. The food servers are attentive and friendly. YES! I highly suggest Hydro!! read more

Came here for lunch while in Calistoga. I had fish tacos ($13) which were good. Came with lettuce and tasted healthy. Boyfriend had a burger. Now, let me break down the burger for you: Burger ($13) comes with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayo. Cheese ($2) Bacon ($2) Fries ($5) - we were asked if we wanted garlic fries and said yes, so that was an additional $2 = $24 Bacon cheeseburger with fries Granted they do have an award winning burger that comes with fries for $22, so in hindsight we should've just ordered that. But it still would've been $24 with the garlic fries upcharge (be careful because they offer them but nowhere on the menu does it mention them or that it costs extra). I would say overall it was good food, however the prices seemed somewhat steep. read more

When we entered the sign said take a menu and seat yourself. The place had about 15 customers and there were plenty of tables available. After about a 15 minute wait, the waitress (Mariisol) got to us. Seems she was by herself doing serving and bar tender jobs by herself - no other help . She was obviously harried. My wife ordered the Garlic fries and I ordered a French Dip. After a short time the food arrived. The Garlic Fries ($7.00) arrived and they were pretty good. Kind of thin and the garlic was not spread out evenly. My French Dip was a disappointment. It was small, very little dip (did have some horseradish). The meat was very dry but had a fair amount stuffed in too small of a bun. The dip was bland, not much flavor. It cost $16.00 ! Not worth even $8.00. The poor waitress was running all over doing her best to get patrons served. We also noticed the dust on the over head fans, hanging over the edge of the blades. I was sort of kidding with the waitress but she was too busy to be jovial. So, all in all, not overly impressed with the place. Not likely to go back. read more

Terrible service and mediocre food. They served us all soda that had no syrup and then brought back completely flat sodas. We waited and waited after informing our server who said the bartender was working on it. After 20 minutes I went up and asked the bartender myself if the soda was fixed and she had no idea what I was talking about. Also waited on a glass of wine for 30 minutes that our server told us the bartender was working on, but I watched her hanging out behind the bar doing nothing so I went up and asked her how much longer on the wine and she had no idea that we had ordered a glass of wine so she poured it right away. We understand that she can't control what the kitchen does. Ordered pepper jack and received regular jack and was charged. The cheese was cold, not even a little melted. We were driving through Calistoga and looking for a dinner on a Sunday night. What a gem to find Hydro. It's a rustic, open feeling restaurant with a large selection of hard liquors and wine. We had the great ravioli dinner with chicken and shrimp. But the bonus for us was that every Sunday from 6 to 9 is a four person jazz combo. What a treat. Four local guys with talent coming out of their ears, including the piano-keyboard player, a popular keyboardist in the north bay. What a delightful evening. We will be back. read more
