We very much enjoyed lunch at Hyman's during our visit to Charleston on July 22, 2026. We had enjoyed it so much when we visited two years ago, that we selected it again this trip. And what a great choice that was! Our waiter, Clifton, took great care to explain the specials, suggest drinks, and introduce us to menu favorites. We enjoyed a fried green tomatoes appetizer over grits, Caesar salad, a lobster crab shrimp roll, a catch of the day, and an adult beverage. No less than Victor Hyman, a great-great-grandson of the founding Hymans, stopped by our table to make sure we were enjoying everything the restaurant had to offer. Check the brass plaque on your table or the plates hanging on a nearby wall to see the names of celebrities who have eaten there before you. But the biggest gem of all was Clifton, who managed several tables, but never let our water glasses drop below half full, who explained the restaurant's donation program (you select the charity, they give the money), and who pointed us to a sign on the wall that each employee passes every time they enter the kitchen: "Kindness matters. Attitude is everything." We felt it. read more

Amazing seafood restaurant in Charleston. A 5 generation restaurant! The food was amazing. We also received complimentary hush puppies and peanuts. There was a short wait despite it raining but they gave us complimentary hush puppies while we wait. The establishment is so cute and friendly. The owner even came to say hi while we were eating and checked up on us to ensure we had a great experience. The table we sat at even had a very cute label. The fod itself was amazing. I love a classic and Hyman's is it! Walking in, the memories are everywhere. You can feel the history, good times and laughs over delicious food instantly. The photos, spiral staircase, wood paneling and creaky floors create the perfect backdrop to this infamous family owned restaurant. Famous for fantastic food and incredible service, and a certain charm, you know you'll enjoy quite an experience. The owners and their staff offer a certain hospitality that feels like family. They run a restaurant that feels like home. It's that certain something that is very special. Our large group loved everything we ordered. The corn ribs were adorable and so very tasty. Hymans has a special place in my heart. I've been coming here since I was a kid and although it is a tourist destination, it has good local food. I come specifically for the shrimp, Hushpuppies, and sweet tea. The service has always been wonderful. Last time, I had Kimberly. We came here with friends and after the experience I can say the environment was very unique to its own extent. The staff were friendly, including our server, Kelly D, and the owner who stopped by to check us on first timers. Our server complimented us with Fried Green Tomatoes topped on their speciality well-known grits (which were delicious). My husband and I split the Pick 3 Dinner Platter which came with Fried Shrimp, Fried Grouper, Fried Oysters, coleslaw (which was very good/ vinegar based) and 2 sweet potatoes! If you really want to hear about it, I'll tell you. But don't expect me to make it sound like one of those phony travel brochures. ​We went to this place in Charleston called Hyman's. My x-wife, she was and still is incredibly difficult when she wants to & just as her defaultemotioal settingwas set too, and that night she was acting like I'd personally offended her ancestors or something. She insisted we go there because she read it was "legendary." That's the kind of word she used when she wanted to feel & sound important. It's this big, loud, three-story building on Meeting Street that's been around since forever. They've got brass plaques on the tables with names of famous people who ate there, which I think is a crock. I didn't enjoy my fried flounder any more just because some movie star sat in his chair ten years ago. Its been a while since I ate there, I ate there a few times as I lived in Charleston for over a decade. ​The place is always a zoo on the weekends. You're practically sitting in a stranger's lap, and the servers are running around like their hair's on fire, trying to be kinda nice enough, but are running and running some more. They give you these free hushpuppies right when you sit down, which was a great part of the start of the meal. It didn't make me want to jump out a window, it made me wanna stay. ​My wife spent the whole time complaining about the noise, even though she's the one who wanted to go. She ordered the She-Crab soup, which is this real thick, creamy Charleston thing. She said it was "rich," but honestly, it just looked like something you'd use to patch a wall. I had the fried flounder. It was one of those whole fish jobs, head and everything, looking up at you from the plate like it was wondering why the hell you were eating it. I'll admit, the meat was okay, it popped right off the bone, but after ten minutes, you're just sitting there picking at a skeleton, feeling like a goddamn archaeologist. ​ My xwife started going on about some nonsense, and I just sort of tuned her out about the remsinder of the night felt. That moment felt sort of grey and depressing, even with the lights and the noise and all. If you ever go to Hyman's, do yourself a favor, after you get the hushpuppies, eat fast, and for God's sake, don't bring anyone who's in a mood. It'll ruin your appetite, I mean it. read more

Wanda took great care of us for Wednesday lunch. They were busy and we were seated after about a 30 min wait. I loved how you were able to pour the sherry into the she crab soup to your liking. It was delish. They also gave me a complimentary appetizer of the fried green tomatoes over cheesy grits... it was yummy! The nola style shrimp was nice and spicy with a generous portion size. I loved the fried okra but couldn't take it with me as I'm staying in a hotel. The coleslaw out of all things was also FABULOUS! I'm not a lover of coleslaw as I'm under 70 years old but this coleslaw came home with me to the hotel!! The owner also made his presence touching tables which was very nice. Hyman's Seafood was a great experience from start to finish. The food was delicious, the staff was friendly, and we loved the complimentary coleslaw and free dessert, a thoughtful touch that made our visit even more enjoyable. On a busy day, the estimated wait was 30-45 minutes, but we chose to sit at the bar and were pleasantly surprised when our table was ready in about 25 minutes. The manager even stopped by to check on us, which showed they truly care about their guests. As someone who works in the hospitality industry, I know that excellent customer service starts with great training. Hyman's has clearly invested in its team, and it shows. Friendly, attentive staff and genuine customer care will always set a business apart. Great food brings people in, but exceptional customer care keeps them coming back. Food was so good we actually went twice on our trip! While you wait they bring around hushpuppies so you don't starve and then once seated you can scan the QR code on the menu to follow them on insta or fb for free hushpuppies for the table. These are the best hushpuppies I've ever had too! The seafood was fantastic and very reasonably priced for how much you get! The inside is very fun with all the photos of everyone who had eaten there too! I had shrimp scampi the first night and the Carolina delight the second. Both were delicious! I walked past and saw there was a line... not often am I a solo diner, and they said there's no wait if I'm okay sitting at the bar! I ordered the fried shrimp po boy to-go! The bartender was really hustling, shoutout to her. She took multiple orders right after making several drinks in a row, went to check on different food, while another customer was asking for the bill. The bar counter shift is not for the weak!! My order was done quick too; I'd say say I got my order within 7 minutes from the time I ordered!! It comes with a TON of fried shrimp, so portions are generous. This was honestly one of the best places I have ever been to. It is seriously a place wish Yelp would let me rate it more than 5 stars. We are from out of town and saw this place and went here. There was a bunch of people sitting outdoors like us waiting for a good bit before any times to be able to come in since it's packed. As soon as we went in the vibe was cool to see and then our waiter was seriously one of the top of the top throughout the whole country. He was actually more than perfect about everything and we were all amazed at him and were all amazing at how the taste of the food was. If you're visiting Hyman's Seafood, be ready for true Southern charm from the moment you walk in. It's family-owned, and Victor, the owner, personally greeted everyone as soon as we were seated, which made the experience feel extra warm and welcoming. They start you off with complimentary boiled peanuts--perfectly salted and cooked for hours until tender and full of flavor. The hush puppies were just as delicious, also complimentary, and even handed out to customers waiting in line outside, which was such a nice touch. I wasn't very hungry but still wanted to try some Southern comfort food, so I ordered the fried green tomatoes and shrimp and grits. The grits were creamy and absolutely delicious, and the fried green tomatoes were crispy and full of flavor. My sister had the clam chowder and crab legs, and both were amazing--fresh, well-prepared, and packed with flavor. For dessert, we shared the key lime pie. When my wife and I first arrived in Charleston, our Uber driver gave us some advice. He told us to skip the Italian restaurants, but make sure we eat plenty of seafood! I'm not sure about the Italian places, but seafood restaurants here are awesome and Hyman's is at the top of the list. There's always a line outside here and on a Saturday night, we waited about 45 minutes for a table (no reservations here). They first give you samples of the hush puppies when you're waiting and they're delicious! Once you're seated, they serve you a plate of boiled peanuts, this is the first time I've had this. When you get around to the menu, there are so many choices! We started off with the Carolina Delight which our server said they're known for. These shrimp and grits were fried up into delicious cakes, truly unique! Next I had a bowl of the She Crab soup. This may have been one of the best soups I've ever had! As an entree, I had the Southern Croquettes made with Chilean Sea Bass and my wife had Shrimp Scampi. So much food, you won't walk out hungry! There are pictures of celebrities everywhere here and plaques on the tables of where they are. I sat in the same spot as Rick Pitino. You have to try the glazed brussels sprouts- -they were amazing. Overall, this is a decent seafood restaurant with a great atmosphere and excellent service. The owners even stopped by our table to ask for feedback, which was a nice touch and showed they genuinely care about their customers. The standout item was definitely the Boom Boom Shrimp--absolutely delicious and something I would come back for again. The hush puppies were also amazing and among the best parts of the meal. On the downside, the Shrimp and Grits were just okay. In a city known for great Shrimp and Grits, this version didn't stand out and wasn't among the best I've had in Charleston. The Bloody Mary was also disappointing. If it weren't for the Shrimp and Grits and Bloody Mary, I would easily give this place 5 stars. Took my mom to Charleston for the first time, and she said she wanted to try Hyman's seafood. We had such a great time. Everyone who worked there customer service the crap out of us the entire time! Clifton was an excellent server and took great care of us. They loaded us up with appetizers and they were all delicious. The hush puppies were phenomenal. The fried green tomatoes and grits were so savory. Our meal was great, but honestly, the appetizers came out a little more hot and tasted a little bit better than the food, not to say the food was bad for the meal, but the appetizers hit for us more than our main courses did. We had such a good time and the staff really took care of us and it was a great old feel in the building. We even saw that Lynyrd Skynyrd and Paula Dean had eaten at the same table we had. read more

After a 5 1/2 drive to Charleston, Hyman's was the first stop for dinner last night. Our server (Summer) was fantastic...was very helpful in narrowing down our selection of drinks and entrees (so much goodness on the menu!), very responsive and accommodating to alterations to our meal...wonderful service here. Then to top that, the father/sons owners came by the table. They do it at every table. Every customer is special. Tobias greeted us and chatted for a few minutes and then later in the meal his father Eli came by and talked - both making sure we enjoyed our experience. What owners do that?!? 4th and 5th generation owners do. Just the responsiveness alone from the staff and owners set Hyman's apart but the food - wow, the kitchen nailed it! We had a three item plate with mussels, fried oysters and sea bass croquettes and the second was the lobster/crab/shrimp tacos with a 'side' of scallops. So good! Only stopping in town for two nights but this may be the first time we go to the same restaurant twice on this short of a trip. Well done Eli, Tobias, Victor, Summer and the rest of the team (esp the kitchen and bar staff!) - the reviews in their site are 100% true. We'll see you tomorrow. read more

Sometimes the tourist hotspot gets it very right. I thought Hyman's, from the food to the decor to the general store that they very ingeniously make you walk through after your meal to the "conversation starter" cards on your table, was a total hoot. One thing's for sure, you won't be bored during your meal here. For starters, the menu is basically a novel, with multiple variations of seafood. We were having an early dinner so I showed some serious self-restraint by getting a cup of the Charleston classic, the she crab soup, and a side of cole slaw. For my first time trying it, the she crab soup was ... interesting. Adding sherry definitely elevated the flavor. It was thick and chock full of crab meat but something was missing, maybe some acid or heat. I preferred my friend's New England-style chowder. Our waitress was actually the best part of our meal. Warm and funny, she started off with pointing out the literal array of sauces on the table (including a magic sauce that I put on everything), giving us a free plate of their boiled peanuts and hush puppies, and also giving us a complimentary appetizer of their fried green tomatoes and creamy grits (the Wadmalaw Delight). Though I think you can get either or both of those dishes by scanning a QR code. Still, we appreciated the kind gesture - loved trying a small bit of everything. The portion sizes are enormous. They don't take reservations so we had about a 15 minute wait, while outside we were offered a hush puppy that was one of the best hush puppies I've had in my life it was hot, crispy and perfect. However, inside they served them instead of bread and they were cold and just okay. I got the she-crab soup, New Orleans shrimp and shrimp & grits. Everything could've used a little more seasoning for my taste. The bread that came with the New Orleans shrimp was unfortunately cold. The service was excellent, one of the owners came around to make sure everything was going well and was very personable. The service was excellent. One of the owners, Tobias even stopped by our table to sure we were well and enjoying our dinner. The restaurant has a really unique and lively atmosphere, and it was fun seeing the tables tag by celebrities and notable visitors who have eaten there over the years. The staff was also very friendly and welcoming, and the service throughout the meal was genuinely good. The food itself was decent and enjoyable, but honestly felt pretty normal compared to the level of hype around the restaurant. Considering we waited over an hour and a half for a table, it didn't quite feel worth the wait. It was also a little confusing seeing some tables empty while so many people were still waiting outside. Overall, it's a cool spot to experience at least once for the atmosphere and history, but the food alone probably wouldn't make us wait that long again. read more

It is always hard to rate a place that so many people love or have rated highly. Does the high rating affect my opinion and experience before I even go in? Hyman's is a place that has been reviewed by so many people who apparently think it is perfection. So of course, I go in with high hopes. I wanted to avoid waiting, so I sat at the bar. A female bartender cleaned off the counter and gave me a menu. I will just say, that this particular lady seemed a little too busy to pay attention to some of the patrons. She wasn't very friendly and ignored us for a good part of the time. Luckily there was another lady working in our area who was easier to flag down and seemed much nicer and attentive. When I placed my order, I showed waitress 1 that I had followed them on IG, so that was supposed to get me a complementary order of boiled peanuts and hush puppies. She acknowledged this, but never brought the items. The menu also said if no staff recommended you the Carolina Delight appetizer, a manager would give it to you for free. No one offered, but I didn't want to bring it up to a manager. Probably that offer should be taken off the menu if it's not actually part of the process. I ended up ordering the Carolina Delight, and the grits cakes and sauce were very tasty. The shrimp was pretty good, but the texture was a bit off. (I later found out that despite being on the coast, this restaurant uses frozen seafood.) Overall, I enjoyed the dish though. The last thing I want to point out, and maybe this is common, but I don't commonly sit at the bar. More than one of the waitstaff from the restaurant would come to the bar to pick up drinks for their table and use their bare hands to fish out the garnishes for the drinks. They didn't wash their hands, just dipped in, grabbed a cherry or orange, and dropped it directly into the drink. Is this common? I would think using tongs would be more appropriate. So, I will round up from 3.5 stars and give this restaurant a 4, mostly due to the service missteps. It won't slow down their traffic at all, but maybe next time the service will be a bit better. read more

I'm not sure how or why, but I know I was very impressed with Hyman's Seafood. What can I say, they make delicious seafood southern style. First, they do not accept reservations so be ready to put your name on the list and maybe explore a bit before getting seated. They nearly perfectly timed my wait, but I wouldn't expect they always time things quite as well. Once seated, be prepared for an extensive menu. They have their catch(es) of the day and other specials in addition to a long menu. To avoid analysis paralysis, I went with the recommended shrimp platter as it also had a good variety of shrimp. I didn't know what to expect with BBQ shrimp (unique, good, but probably not something I would get too frequently). I loved the fried shrimp since they were very lightly fried. No surprise, their collard greens were great. I ordered a Bloody Mary to go with my meal and enjoyed it - would recommend. They have a deal where you get a double for a few bucks more, but I decided to pass since I had a run the next day. Great service. Expect a follow up during your meal from one of the owners. A nice touch that was done seeking legit feedback versus just checking a box. I'd love to go back to Hyman's. It will need to wait until my next trip to Charleston! read more

My wife and I recently went to Hyman's Seafood for lunch on a rainy weekend day. Hyman's Seafood is no-frills, casual, and usually packed-expect to wait a while unless you want to sit at the bar. We were able to get bar seating within a couple minutes of our arrival, and our service was solid even though the restaurant was packed. We shared the fried green tomatoes and grits, which was more like cheese with some grits and two tomatoes. This dish needed more tomatoes and grits to balance out the cheese. We shared the Chilean sea bass croquets and the Carolina Special platter. The best thing by far were the hush puppies-Hyman's Seafood makes amazing hush puppies (worth walking by the restaurant just to get the samples they hand out). The croquets and bread were OK-however, everything else was very disappointing. I would recommend Hyman's for their hush puppies, some appetizers, and a drink or two, but to go elsewhere for a full meal. read more
