The salmon and jumbayla is pretty good. The jumbayla is a little too oily. Prices are a little expensive but atmosphere was nice.

In a cute alley way, we stopped in for a dinner on a cooler night. I will say all staff were personable and did their best - the review shouldn't reflect the staff (they were 4.5/5) but the food was just not that great. While they had an elevated menu, the decor inside reminded me of an old crab house. They did have live music on a Saturday evening and a small covered patio. For starters we got corn bread and crab dip and both were fairly lack luster. The dip was small and very fishy for a crab dip. The corn bread looked like texas toast but grilled and sweeter then normal texas toast but nothing like any corn bread I've eaten in my 30+ years. For mains I tried the shrimp and grits, and some others in the group tried the shrimp skewers, shrimp tacos, etc. Most of the food was fairly tasteless and not in a this is so healthy way - it just was bland. My shrimp and grits had fantastic grits and dressing but the sausage was meh and the shrimp looked barely grilled. The side sauces were all pretty boring and one item came with a garlic butter that came completely cold - not sure how we were supposed to use it. Drinks we got were all pretty watered down - I did like the garden spritz but the basil flavor was the star of the show and some people didn't like how strong it was. Overall - maybe an off day but for the price point, not impressed on the seafood or the drinks. Worst service in over 20 years of downtown Charleston restaurant experience. And I used to really like this place. The bartender made a disgusting comment to my wife as soon as we sat down, and then looked at me like yep, I just said that. The patrons around us looked frustrated too, and they eventually all left. Saturday night with people all over downtown, and the Coast bar is empty. No water, no silverware, wrong food brought out, and rude language all night. They tried to argue with me that what they brought out was what I ordered, and after finally bringing me what I ordered they tried to charge me for the wrong dish. Maybe it was just a bad experience trying to have dinner at the bar, and the rest of the place is still ok. But, I'm not going to waste another downtown dinner out at Coast. Hard pass. read more

Coast Bar & Grill is a hidden gem in Charleston! Tucked inside a historic warehouse, the space has that perfect mix of coastal charm and laid-back vibes. The seafood here is incredible--you can really taste the difference in the wood-grilled fish and oysters. Everything has this deep, smoky flavor thanks to their custom hickory and oak grill. We came by during happy hour (4:30-6PM daily at the bar) and it was such a good move--great drinks, solid bites, and a super chill atmosphere. The crab dip was a must-try--creamy, loaded with flavor, and served with grilled bread. We also had the salt & pepper calamari (so crispy and that sriracha aioli is no joke) and the crab soup, which was rich and comforting. For mains, I got the grilled spicy adobo shrimp with cheese grits and pineapple chili salsa--such a fun combo of sweet heat. My partner had the pan-seared scallops and hasn't stopped talking about the bacon cheese grits and blue crab étouffée. We lucked out and caught live music in Hutson Alley with Ronnie Johnson--such a great local touch. Also, a nice bonus: they're part of the Holy City Hospitality group, so you can earn rewards for dining here. Enjoyed the coast experience many times over the past five years. The location is classic Charleston tucked away in an alley. The low country coastal decor is very cool. The food can be exceptional though inconsistent. Service is the same with sometimes excellent but often less the standard. This most recent visit exemplified this. If I could give a 3.5, I would. The service at the bar bordered on rude. They just experienced the theatre rush. When we sat down, the couple next to us had shrimp on ice that had turned completely to water. Their plates have not been removed. We had to ask to have the bar wiped down and the remaining glasses removed. During our time there on this Friday evening, glasses from previous guests remained at the bar the entire time. The bartenders were a mix of friendly and put out by us being there. We had the shrimp ceviche, the cocktail shrimp, and the conch fritters. They do have some of the best shrimp cocktail in Charleston. Perfectly cooked and balance seasoning. The fritters were hot with a homemade tartar sauce. The cerviche generally good and above average. The bathrooms were not well kept, and there was a large pile of discarded table napkins outside of the bathroom overflowing a large basket that suggests a lack of attention to detail or at worst cleanliness by management. This might be my favorite happy hour in Charleston. I'm always a big fan of the ally but this one is a crowd pleaser. I wanted shrimp cocktail and oysters and it did not disappoint. I will say, the crab dip was not for me. The bread tasted like it had chemicals on it from the grill cleaner and the dip tasted fishy not fresh. Our group had reservations at Coast. We had to wait a long time before the waitress took our order, the food started coming out before our bottle of wine which we order first. There was only one person attending the bar. Then it took so long to get our bill and then their system stopped and the waitress left for a very long time. Ww told them we were going to a concert next door and needed to leave before this happened. We requested to use our loyalty points and a $10 reward of which neither occurred. The manager never attempted to assist the waitress and acted indignant to the situation. We had a large bill at our table. I do not recommend Coast!!! So many other excellent restaurants downtown. The food is really good. My husband got the shrimp tacos and they were the best we've ever had. I got the catch of the day. There was A LOT of flavor. Good but perhaps a little too much flavor. Service was good. We didn't feel rushed. Definitely don't go here if you're in a hurry. They are slow but we didn't mind. The price is just right for downtown Charleston. We appreciated not having to pay an arm and a leg for a decent meal. We ate on the patio which was fun because it's covered but still outdoors. We would definitely recommend this place. Super disappointing dinner tonight. Dark and dirty feeling place. Waiter tried and was nice. Cocktail was weak and overly sweet. Calamari was greasy with pasty breading. I don't even know where to begin... crab dip that is runny, and not a lot of crab. It's listed in the menu as blue crab, spinach, artichokes, horseradish and cream cheese. There may have been some cream cheese, but it was thinned with something. No artichoke, no spinach, certainly no bite of real horseradish. I know you get your desserts from US Food (which is just CRIMINAL in a foodie town, which is why we skipped dessert. At least the waiter was honest and speared us that), so you could order your app from them , too. It has to be better than what you served. And our poor, young, uneducated about the menu server. Honey, étouffée is most certainly NOT a Charleston original. Crab étouffée ought to have crab in it. it's listed as an accompaniment: Blackened fish, blue crab étouffée and jalapeño cornbread. What came out was overdone, not blackened, fish, in a red broth. The cornbread was sitting in the broth, and the fish on top. Again, no crab. Again, maybe the chef needs to go back to culinary school. Étouffée is not a tomato broth with spice. Étouffée is a Cajun dish, It should be a thick sauce, with a roux, onion, celery and bell pepper, and if you call it CRAB étouffée, maybe a lump or two of actual crab, and served over rice. But when questioned, we were told it was cooked with crab, but no crab was actually served, it was just to give it flavor. Again, not this servers fault, it's management FOH and the chef. That is the most REDONKULOUS answer. This is so not what étouffée should by, not even étouffée "style." This was also told to us, to be in place of the promised mashed potato and bland veggies. Are you KIDDING me? Based on tonight, the Holy City Hospitality group needs to close this place down and start from scratch. You live in a coastal cuisine town. Use fresh, local seafood. Use some of the great bakeries or pastry chefs in this town and bake great things for dessert, don't order key lime pie from US foods. (And stay away from the description of your fried apples as "like a Costco churro, but with apples. This we make here!"Nothing against US Foods. But in this town? Super disappointing. It's like reading cliff notes. You might still pass, but it's super unsatisfying. I wish I would have thought to take photos. But honestly, I was so shocked at what the server was telling us about the no crab in the Charleston known crab étouffée, I just couldn't process. Sadly must set record straight, the food was horrible and very low quality- not what one would expect in Charleston. The crab soup was a strange tan color w/ unpleasant watery broth & tiny bit of crab w/ drops of cream. The crab dip was too rich w/out signs of artichokes or much crab, served w/ cheap white toasted bread. It then got worse. Shrimp po-boy was a cheap bun w/ cheap tasting fried shrimp- nothing like the real thing. Grilled shrimp were okay but w/ black burned char. The nightmare jasmine rice was an overcooked blob of sticky, unformed (grains) of rice. Finally, the worst of all, seafood jambalaya was made of mussels, shrimp, and scallops (none tasting fresh) and awful tasting sausage on top of a big glob of the overcooked rice blob - all sitting in an oily brown mess of a sauce. No ingredients matching what jambalaya should have! Finally, dozen oysters were fine. Would never go back nor recommend but di era should be forewarned of the actual quality of this restaurant's food. Service was fine. read more

My daughter and I ate here on our last night in Charleston and were looking forward to the menu. We enjoyed our summer special drinks, and ordered the salt and pepper calamari. It was fried well but totally tasteless. I ordered the braised grouper and was terribly disappointed. The texture of the fish was slimy and had no seasoning, and the grits were swimming in a tasteless broth that masked the grits completely. My daughter ordered the fish of the day(I think it was red drum?) and had to send it back as it was not cooked all the way through. it came back and was cooked better, but neither one of us finished what was a rather expensive meal. Our waitress was attentive and gave us good service. She didn't charge for the undercooked meal. The restaurant had a nice location off the street down an alley, but the decor was lacking any ambiance. It was more of a casual restaurant with an expensive menu. to start the food was good. the service, however, terrible. We were seated with bread plates. no bread, no silver ware. After asking for silver ware we ordered drinks. After 20 minutes 3/4 drinks came, and we were notified once was unavailable. We asked about one of the wines (notes, etc.) , and she said it's dry and white (obviously). We clarified and she said "normally i'd just make it up, but i'll ask." She went away and came back with no wine, turns out they were out of that too. Half of the entrees came out 10 minutes before the rest of the food. The soup that came out was ridiculously cold. We sent the soup back and our waitress replied "it's happened before." Then the check came all on one, we were never asked how we'd like to handle it, with a drink that we never received. We told our waitress she said she left it on because it was similar in price to the new drink we had ordered. It was a dollar more. Then after asking for separate checks, she came back with one check for the whole table just minus the drink she had left on. Then we said no, we need separate checks and finally she came back with the correct checks. Nothing was comped, which isn't an expectation but a respectful thing to do when you have put your customers through so much unprofessionalism. Coast was okay; but definitely nothing to rave about. The entrance to the restaurant is very cute and inviting. The service was a bit slow at times, but it was the weekend, so makes sense. We started with a bottle of wine and the calamari appetizer. So far, so good. We ordered some oysters as well since I'm a fan. Pretty good! Then, for entrees, we got the crab stuffed flounder (underwhelming, could have used more seasoning as it lacked some flavor), and the braised bass, which was better. We decided to skip dessert. My wife and I came here for Christmas Eve dinner on our last night in Charleston. Compared to other places we visited in the area, this was near the top of our list of places to eat at. It's in a fun alley area with other restaurants and once you go in, it appears quite unassuming. Our server was very good and checked up on us frequently even though she was helping with a big party seated across from us. Let's get to the food.. we ordered a dozen oysters, which were very good. I rarely put anything on my raw oysters so I can't comment on how good the mignonette or other sauce were. My wife had the Shrimp & Chicken fettucine, which she very much enjoyed. I had the seafood jambalaya, which was excellent. I normally receive more rice than meat but not here. The bay scallops were chopped small and felt quite plentiful, which were great to eat. I really enjoyed the mussels as they were meatier than what I normally receive at other restaurants. We couldn't imagine having dessert as we were stuffed but definitely happy we had a chance to eat here. read more

You could see the chef's grilling the seafood in front of you and there were plenty of seafood options on the menu. There were also a lot of cocktails and beer to pick from,and they were reasonably priced for being downtown. The wait staff were very friendly and helpful! The Buffalo shrimp tacos were good!
