3 stars for the rest area itself, which is bare bones, 5 stars for the Lions Club folks set up outside giving away free food! Donations accepted but not required! Apparently, I am here one hour before this rest area closes. A good rest area should not be closed or at least accessible bathrooms 24-7. Guess they are worried about the sad reality that some a-hole will purposely damage the property. Being understaffed and not a property worth using vid cams on, they close too early. The bathrooms were clean and a person available to ask questions but because of the other inconvenience, gets three stars. read more

While the Willington rest area doesn't offer the bright lights and baubles travelers might find at a New York State Thruway or New Jersey Turnpike service area, there is a certain picturesque charm to be found at this modest stopover between Hartford, Connecticut and the Massachusetts border. Whether its the meandering Willimantic River just down the hill (the westbound side offers access to the river and a viewing deck) or the colonial farmhouse aesthetic of the main buildings with their fieldstone veneer and exterior chimneys, this rest area offers visitors a small piece of the rustic simplicity and historic character of Connecticut's nearby Quiet Corner. Visitors will find plenty of outdoor space in a simple but pretty park-like setting with picnic tables and post-and-rail fencing and minor landscaping as well as the afore-mentioned access to the river. Once inside the main building, visitors will find men and women's lavatories, a tourist information center and a small bank of snack and beverage machines. Unlike some of the other Connecticut rest areas which are set back a considerable distance from the highway at the end of a windy access road, this location is just off the highway. On the one hand, this detracts from the scenery. However, on the other hand, it could be said to increase convenience and safety, particularly when it comes to reducing the opportunities for typical rest area shenanigans. The same could also be said of the hours at this location. It is not open 24/7 which can be frustrating especially if you find it closed early or late in the day. However, if the facility was left open 24/7, a reasonable person might have serious misgivings about stopping there during the late evening or early morning hours. Aside from those concerns, this is a generally well-maintained rest area offering a very basic level of amenities in an aesthetically rewarding setting. read more

i am not one to leave a negative review. I stopped to use the restroom and it was by far the worst rest stop i've ever seen. There was a stall that was completely covered in human feces, and not accidentally. I would upload the picture but truly i don't want to scar anyone. Everyone that came in had the exact same reaction. I truly feel terrible for whoever has to clean those bathrooms. Very disgusting honestly i will never step foot in there again. Disgusting. That is the only way to describe this southbound rest stop. We were on the road and it was about 8 o'clock in the morning and we needed to stop and use the restroom. Unfortunately the rest stops in Connecticut do not open until 830. As a result your only choice is to use one of the 10 or so portable potties. So I checked every single potty and none of them were acceptable for usage between urine, dirty toilet paper, and feces on the seat, I couldn't bring myself to use any of them and looked for the nearest fast food restaurant to buy a cup of coffee and use their facilities. By the way the rest areas close at 3:30 PM. I guess the hours are a result of budget cuts. The condition unfortunately is not. I vividly remember traveling through Connecticut in the 1980s and having the exact same problem with the cleanliness issue with the rest area on the northbound side in this same area of I-84. Shame on you Connecticut. Must be good for local businesses thougH since folks seek them out to use the restroom. read more

I think it was somewhere just past this rest area, I saw a fat escaped domestic rabbit. (No doubt, it was white with black spots and dining in the median. At first I thought it was a soccer ball.) Oh, and all up and down I-84 in CT, either Snapdragon or Butter-and-eggs (hard to tell from a passing vehicle). read more

I liked this rest area//Official Connecticut Visitor Center. It comes fully equipped with trees-trees-trees, rogue squirrels, picnic tables and bbq's, toilets inside and out, as many brochures about Connecticut as you can possibly want or need and religious groups trying to get you to 'go Christian' right next to a 'no solicitors' sign. What can you say - it's a rest areas. If you miss the stop on the Mass Pike, this is the next one you get to on your way through Hartford. I've definitely been to nicer, cleaner rest areas. Truth be told, it's a bit sketchy, especially at night. But, if you have to go, you have to go and I'm just glad that we don't have to get off of the highway and search for a place. read more

I am glad I stopped her during the day. Now I know that I should not stop here if I am driving back to Connecticut alone at night. It is small and sketchy looking and really just a place for you to use the restroom and hop back in your vehicle. You can grab maps, brochures and a snack from the vending machines but that's it. Super rude workers. They close inconveniently at 3:30pm and a guy will stand at the door and literally tell you to hurry up when you are trying to use the bathroom if it's around closing time. Gave me a bad impression of Connecticut already. read more

NEVER EVER STOP HERE FOR THE BATHROOM. the stupid people close this building at 330PM and the bathrooms are in there. If you desperately need it, they provide port-o-potty but who want shit in an outhouse during the middle of winter?! No one. Seriously. This was by far the nastiest rest stop I have seen in years. The ladies room floor was covered in water and toilet tissue.
