Jeff--I believe that's the name of the business owner and I were talking about our cats and then he suddenly paused...before saying something extremely racist. To be clear, I am white. I believe the hesitation was to consider if it was "safe" to make the joke that he did. The shop is not a large space and I did not want to lose my temper and escalate anything, so I pretended to laugh and told him I needed my relatives' approval before buying anything. Well. I have a lot of racist relatives. They would defend this man. I won't. I will not give him money, theirs, mine, or anyone else's. It's sad to hear a local business owner and operator, otherwise welcoming, kind and polite, talk like that because it undoes his kindness--he's only willing to show it to people who look like he does. It's disturbing because this is not the screaming, overt racism of domestic terrorists and our government of 2026. it's insidious. It's literally in our mom and pop next door local businesses. Made an appointment with Dr.Rebecca McLaughlin and was seen in about a week! The office is bright and sunny and super clean. Some country tunes playing in the waiting room and really friendly staff great you. Dr.McLaughlin was SO wonderful - saw me right on time, explained every step of the exam, and even helped me look up a new contact solution I was considering. So glad that they take my insurance (Harvard Pilgrim) AND they're just a few turns off of 395.

He made the glasses in 24 hours and they were perfect. Not only perfect, but John patiently stayed at least an hour after closing with a science geek and perfectionist to get the glasses exactly right! This is not typical perfect, this was unflappable extraordinary above and beyond excellence and professionalism, perfect! As a result, my distance vision is fairly good with the lenses that resulted from her prescription, though one eye is better than the other. My near vsion, however is terrible. My left eye is slightly better than myright eye, so I have to tilt my glasses and use only my left eye when I read something up close. It's been only 6 months or so since I got these new lenses from Charlton Optical, but I'm going this week to go to opticians in Sturbridge whom I've used before and from whom I've always gotten a satisfactory result. I used up my vision insurance in Charlton, but will gladly pay out of pociet inSturbridge to have my vision back. I would say that the woman who performed my eye exam at Charlton Optical wasn't qualified. Heavens only knows what kind of training she had!
