Overpriced microwaved pulled pork on Hawaiian Rolls. Waste of money for what you get.

We went to Gao's BBQ & Crab in Allen after a graduation celebration with a party of 14 people. I'll…read moredo my best to give an objective review. The biggest issue for us was the ordering system. Everyone has to scan a QR code, place their own order, and enter their phone number. For a large group, this became very confusing because when the food came out, there was no clear way to tell who ordered what. We spent a lot of time trying to figure out which dishes belonged to each person. If you're coming with a big party, I definitely recommend making a list of everyone's orders ahead of time so it's easier to organize when the food arrives. The food itself was extremely spicy. Most of the BBQ items -- seafood, chicken, beef, and pork -- seemed to have the same heavy cumin and spicy seasoning, so the flavors started tasting very similar. Personally, that wasn't for us. However, the soy sauce fried rice and the cold noodles were really good and stood out the most from the meal. The service was good overall, although communication was a little difficult at times because it was hard to understand the staff's accents. The restaurant itself was clean and well kept. I think this place may work much better for smaller groups, but for our large party it was stressful and the food flavors were too repetitive for our taste. Unfortunately, it's probably not somewhere we would return to. Also they added 25% tip mandatory without mentioning it anywhere ; It was an experience though

We just…read morewanted to share one small meal together and the NY strip and Large Caesar salad were plenty to feed two people. The steak was super flavorful and was cooked to perfection. It was a warm pink middle and a crusty exterior. The sauces were a great accompaniment. I didn't much care for the red wine reduction, but the chimichurri and the creamy horseradish were outstanding. The Caesar salad was delicious and executed well. All the food hit the spot and made me want to try even more of the menu. Our waitress was very kind and had the southern hospitality and accent down pat haha! She gave us fast service and was very attentive. The unique factor for me here was the back story. I heard the owner has a ranch up north which is where the meat is sourced from and he also has a Local Yocal Farm to Market shop close by the restaurant which I'm looking forward to checking out as well. I give it a five stars because I am looking forward to going back for more delicious food and sharing the meal with friends!

You have to seat yourself - there were enough vacant tables to pick from. Within a few minutes, our server was over and helped us narrow down on what we wanted to order. I went for a Crushed Velvet Mule in addition to Cali, Buffalo (both grilled versions) and Burg B Q. We told our server that between me and my wife, we will be sharing the chicken sandwich and hence requested that it be sliced into 2. Not only were the burgers sliced, it was served in separate plates with sides as well - that was a really nice touch. Cali was a bit bland, Buffalo and Burg B Q were both really nice. The drink was nice as well. There was live music but we were seated near a table that was pretty boisterous, could hardly hear anything. The outdoor seating overlooking greenery and events they do at the restaurant make the place quite different - we will definitely be back soon to try other options on the menu.

Still, if we had not been getting carryout, it seemed like a pleasant place to sit down and eat, too. This is order at the counter service, and they were happy to explain things to this non-native. Everything was carefully packed to maintain temperature and avoid spills. I enjoyed the brisket with spicy sauce, though I have since heard some people really prefer the moist type, I think dry was right for me. I got a side of coleslaw so I could get my veggies in; it had a creamy yet not too heavy dressing. The stuffed potato was tasty, especially with all the recommended toppings, but it was the size of a small football! I had to put half of it in the fridge.

My favorite part of the whole experience was the sausage (how do you mess that up?) and the potato salad. I think I'm just finding that it's better to smoke your own meats at home. Half the price and 100x better. Service also wasn't the best. Lady at the register was dead inside. I could tell this was the last place she wanted to be today. Side note: waving your hand in the air to call my attention when I am not looking your direction is no way of letting a line of people know you are ready to take their order. "Next guest, please!" goes a long way. Possibly why she was so irritated when I finally got to the counter.
