Been in McKinney a long time and Hutchins is just part of the routine at this point. Whenever family visits from out of town this is where I take them, because it's the easiest way to show off what real Texas barbecue is supposed to taste like. The brisket is the reason I keep coming back. I usually go fatty, and it's got that dark peppery bark and stays so tender you barely need to chew it. I've eaten a lot of brisket around here over the years and theirs is still the one I measure everything else against. You cannot skip the Texas Twinkies either. It's a whole jalapeño stuffed with brisket and cream cheese, then wrapped in thick bacon, and it's every bit as ridiculous as it sounds in the best way. Grab a jalapeño cheddar sausage link and some mac and cheese on the side and you're set. The line can get long on weekends but it moves fast and it's worth the wait every time. Hutchins is among the best BBQ places I've been in the US. Starts cafeteria style like many do. Lots of freebies if you dine in. I murdered some peach cobbler after I had too much to eat to prove it. Tried the beef and pork ribs and a smoked sausage. My only regret was trying to eat it all. Beef rib was one of the best I've had. Not typically a first choice but the brisket sold out a few people ahead of me. Was delicious and glad I tried it. Pork ribs were just wonderful. All dry rub, no sauce required. But think they had it. Sausage was a quiet star of the show. Would love to have more right now as I type this a 1,000 miles away. Once you have pledged the life of your offspring, and tapped the appropriate tip space on the checkout tablets operated by a cashier with a thousand-yard stare, you may eat your admittedly delicious but ever-so-costly costly bbq in the sweaty, dim gloom of an extremely loud and busy dining room amongst the other poor souls who have also made the ultimate sacrifice. As a glutton and now a glutton for punishment, I can't seem to keep away for too long, even though some of the patrons are hellbent on digging all the cookies out of the complimentary banana pudding. Scoundrels. Also, y'all used to have the regular old Mrs Baird's white bread. Now it's some fancy "artisan" nonsense. The real silverware disappeared. The unlimited (dine-in only) banana pudding, peach cobbler and ice cream dessert choices were also fantastic (so much so that a picture was not obtained as it was eaten up quickly!) This is a walk through the line to order setup and very friendly staff. The decor was definitely rustic like a place built in the 50's or 60's and maintained well. In a state overflowing with elite barbecue, I'd heard so much hype about Hutchins BBQ that it immediately became a must-try. Walking in, the first thing you notice is the crowd. You order first, then join everyone else in the hunt for a table. This place was absolutely PACKED. Fortunately, the line moved quickly, the staff kept things efficient, and we managed to snag a table inside. Now for the sticker shock. Expensive is an understatement. Our order included: * 1 Beef rib: $63.40 * 1/4 lb brisket: $10.40 * Cheddar jalapeño sausage: $9.60 * 1/4 Turkey slice: $7.44 * 1/4 lb pulled pork: $7.80 The prices definitely made me pause, but thankfully the food mostly delivered. The beef rib was outstanding--juicy, incredibly tender, with a beautiful bark and excellent seasoning. It was everything you'd hope for from Texas barbecue. The cheddar jalapeño sausage was one of the best I've ever had. Every bite was packed with melted cheddar and jalapeño, perfectly seasoned with an incredible snap. I'd order it again without hesitation. The pulled pork also exceeded my expectations. Oddly enough, it was served cold, but even so it was juicy, flavorful, and smoked nearly to perfection. Unfortunately, the brisket didn't live up to the reputation. It wasn't bad by any means, but in a state where brisket is king, this one was simply average. Likewise, the turkey was just okay, both were borderline dry and lacking the smoky flavor that separates good barbecue from great barbecue. The sides were solid. The mac and cheese was rich and cheesy without being particularly memorable. The green beans were surprisingly good, with a subtle sweetness that made them more interesting than your typical barbecue side. Then came one of Hutchins' best touches: complimentary banana pudding, peach cobbler, and soft-serve ice cream. The peach cobbler was phenomenal, honestly the best restaurant peach cobbler I've ever had. It arrived hot with a crisp, crunchy topping and a soft, fluffy interior bursting with peach flavor. Add a scoop of the complimentary vanilla soft serve, and it becomes an outstanding dessert. The banana pudding also exceeded my expectations. For a restaurant serving it complimentary, it's about as good as you could ask for, creamy, balanced, and incredibly satisfying. Overall, Hutchins absolutely earns its reputation as one of the better barbecue joints in Texas. While the brisket and turkey kept it from reaching that truly unforgettable, five-star level, the beef rib, sausage, pulled pork, and complimentary desserts made for a meal that's well worth experiencing at least once. Definitely worth the high ratings! I finally made my way here with my parents and sister on a Saturday around 1PM. The line was long as expected but it moved quickly. I wish I'd gotten the name of the gentlemen who was giving out samples by the bbq pits, he was super friendly, made some recommendations when he learned it was our first time and gave us nice sized samples of the regular and jalapeño cheddar sausage and the dino beef rib which was amazing by the way. Once inside, I ordered a chopped brisket sandwich, a texas twinkle, 1 hot link, mac and cheese and green beans. Chopped brisket sandwich: Nicely sized, packed with meat and delicious! The meat was tender, flavorful, no gristle or weird pieces throughout, highly recommended! Texas Twinkie: Succulent! Nothing else needs to be said, it was amazing. Hot link: Small but good flavor and had a nice kick of heat. Green beans were a little harder than i preferred but they had good flavor. Mac and cheese was really creamy, needed more flavor though. Ended the meal with a sample of the peach cobbler and banana pudding. The peach cobbler was ok but the banana pudding was pretty tasty and the chocolate cone was simple but good. First time at the McKinney location. I've been to the Frisco one and definitely one of my favorites.. The parking lot isn't that big but there is some street parking behind. Came around World Cup time... Weeknight 1 hour before closing and they ran of brisket. I was shocked!! So sad. There was a decent line too. It was busy! Got the family pack that feeds 4-6 for $96. This includes 2 lbs of meats and 3 sides. There is a footnote about limit of 1 lb of brisket and if you do 2 lbs of brisket then it's an extra charge. Got pulled pork, pork ribs, jalapeno cheddar sausage. Sides: broccoli slaw, jalapeno beans, mac and cheese. The sausage is not spicy and has good flavor. Favorite was the broccoli slaw. My problem with the meat was that it was very salty. I woke up in the middle of the night and was so thirsty. The beans were crazy salty too when I re heated left overs. The footnote is that I don't like not super salty taste in my food.. For 4 people this was a good serving but 2 of the people didn't eat that much to be fair... The plus side is self serve pickles, pickled onions, onions. And obviously the dessert with the banana pudding, soft serve, peach cobbler. The staff were good though and doing their best to keep it moving. They actually bus the table for you when you're done?? I think this is new.. but you could bus your own too. This place was actually recommended to us by a friend who had eaten here before, and I have to agree, it did not disappoint. It's called Hutchins Barbecue, and I'd say it's a must-visit if you're in the area! It's one of those spots where you order first and then go find a seat. There was a bit of a line when we got there, but it moved pretty quickly. It probably would've been even faster if we had known exactly what we wanted, but since it was our first time and we were a group, it took us a minute to decide. Also, the place was packed but it wasn't hard to find a table since there's plenty of seating. We were traveling in from Omaha, so we know good BBQ and Hutchins BBQ was honestly some of the best BBQ we have ever eaten. On a recent trip to visit my sister, she asked if there was anything I would like to do. I told her that one night I would love to go out for some amazing Texas BBQ. I wanted something that makes your mouth water and you talk about it for days after. She said she knew exactly where to go. She wasn't wrong. Coming from Norther Illinois, there are a lot of barbeque places up here. Unfortunately, most of them couldn't pass the qualifying round of a small-town barbeque contest, let alone be considered good. So, I really wanted great Barbeque. My sister took my lady and myself to Hutchins. When we arrived, we had issues finding parking. The place was that busy, which is a good sign. We got in line and waited. Everything is first come first served. While in line the smokehouse section was giving out samples of their smoked sausage. I knew the rest of the night was going to be amazing based on the sample sausage. When we got through the line, which moved fairly quickly, we ordered Prime Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Turkey Breast with sides of Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, and Fried Okra. We wanted to the ribs, but they were out when we got to the front. She also said I had to get a Texas Twinkie as well. Everything we had was amazing. The brisket was tender, juicy, and full flavored. The bark had amazing flavor, and it permeated all of the meat. I judge a smokehouse/barbeque restaurant by their brisket. This is definitely in the top 5 Briskets I've ever had. The pulled pork was amazing. Again, juicy, flavor full. The turkey breast was cooked to perfection. All the meat was good, but if I had to do it again; as much as I enjoyed the turkey, I think I would have tried something else. All the sides were good. No complaints, but let's be honest if you're going out for smoked meat, the sides take a back seat. The Texas Twinkie was good. I've had similar things at other places. This one was above average because they used their own brisket, but with brisket that amazing, you should just get the brisket. The restaurant itself is basically a cafeteria style. You go to each station and ask for what you want. Meat, then sides, etc. Go to the register to check out. Finally, you find a table to sit at. It's first come first serve. They have indoor and outdoor seating areas. The night we were there we had trouble finding a table inside, but got lucky. Overall, the seating area was clean, the staff cleaned up as tables vacated. The only issue that I had was outside the restaurant's control; patrons sitting at the tables too long. There were a couple of tables that had been there and eating before we even sat, and then when we were leaving, they were still there. This makes it hard for other customers could have trouble finding a place to sit. Overall, I loved this place... and I'm going to be using it as one of the restaurants I judge other barbeque places. The food by pound is on the pricer side especially when it's two regular size rib for 10$, one sausage $10 and $20 two slice of their signature cut. We celebrated my husband's birthday at Hutchins BBQ and had a really great experience. Even on a rainy Saturday afternoon, we only waited about 15-20 minutes in line, which wasn't bad at all. Inside is spacious, and we had no trouble finding a table for our group of 10. Our waitress, Megan, was incredibly kind and attentive. She and the team even sang happy birthday and surprised him with an ice cream cone, which made the day feel extra special. The food was very good overall. We ended up going with the family feast for four people, and this was plenty for our group of five, with a little bit of leftovers. The brisket was everyone's favorite, the pulled pork was excellent as well with much more flavor than I've had anywhere else! We loved the sides-- the mac & cheese was everyone's favorite as it had such a great flavor! One of the highlights of this place is the serve yourself dessert bar when you are dining in. We enjoyed multiple helpings of peach cobbler with their soft, serve ice cream, both of which were absolutely fantastic!! Ordering the food was kind of an assembly line set up, with employees dishing out servings. Everyone was friendly and fast, but we were disappointed that both types of ribs were sold out by the time we arrived. New Year's Day Lunch at Hutchins hit the spot! Stars of the show were the pork ribs, jalapeño sausage and okra! The brisket is good but has a layer of fat. Easy to get around the fat and it's seasoned well. Mac & Cheese was good but the kids didn't like the hard bits, (I think it was bacon.) Potato casserole was smooth, priced well but could have used some chives or green onions. (Definitely Skip on the $3.89 fountain drinks & $1.50 bag of chips. ) I wasn't a fan of the $60 beef rib ($39.99 lb) but the hubs liked it. Jalapeño pinto bean & chicken are good but not spectacular. Kids enjoyed the peach cobbler and ice cream. The restaurant is run well, line went quickly, no shortage of staff and never saw a table sit more than a minute before it was cleaned and ready to go. I was mentally prepared for BBQ greatness, not a solo mission. After some internal debate (and mild heartbreak), I spotted a workaround: sliced brisket sandwich, potato salad, and brisket beans. This is the best bbq I have had. Been doing some smoking of my own and I can really appreciate what they are doing there. You don't need sauce, the meat has plenty of flavor and smoke on its own. Great bark on this bbq. You also get a full condiment bar and free dessert if you eat in. Take some pickles , onions and bread. Ask for the pit tour, the manager and Russell were very kind and gave a great information about the operation and showed us around. This place is ran like a bbq naval battleship.
