What sets Local Yocal apart is that they run their own butcher shop, so you can actually taste the difference in the meat before anybody even brings out a sauce. It is a little nicer than your average barbecue joint, tucked into an old renovated warehouse in downtown McKinney, but it still feels laid back once you settle in. I came in mostly for the chicken fried steak after hearing people rave about it, and it lived up to the hype. Crispy crust, tender inside, and that smoky twist they put on it makes it stand out from any other version I have had in town. My buddy ordered a Wagyu steak and could not stop talking about how well it was cooked, which tracks given they cut their own beef. We split the mac and cheese with chopped brisket on the side and that thing is dangerous, rich and loaded with meat. Prices run a bit higher than a typical smokehouse, but the quality earns it. My wife and I stopped in this restaurant in downtown McKinney and it did not disappoint. We just wanted to share one small meal together and the NY strip and Large Caesar salad were plenty to feed two people. The steak was super flavorful and was cooked to perfection. It was a warm pink middle and a crusty exterior. The sauces were a great accompaniment. I didn't much care for the red wine reduction, but the chimichurri and the creamy horseradish were outstanding. The Caesar salad was delicious and executed well. All the food hit the spot and made me want to try even more of the menu. Our waitress was very kind and had the southern hospitality and accent down pat haha! She gave us fast service and was very attentive. The unique factor for me here was the back story. I heard the owner has a ranch up north which is where the meat is sourced from and he also has a Local Yocal Farm to Market shop close by the restaurant which I'm looking forward to checking out as well. This spot is a little outside the downtown McKinney area but just close enough for convenience so if you're looking to avoid the crowds it's definitely a good spot! The interior was super cozy with a warm southern charm. Plenty of space especially for Saturday brunch! The food was delicious! I had a short rib grill cheese that was mouth watering and utterly delicious! The short rib was tender and moist! The ribs were dry and chewy they obviously had been sitting around too long. The Brisket was delicious! I have to say the service was top-notch. I made last-minute reservations, and they were able to take us in. I told them it's my husband's birthday ; they had a card with handwritten birthday wishes, which I think is fantabulous! Shout out to the reception and our server, Lorraine; she is on it! I had the pleasure of visiting Local Yocal BBQ and Grill recently and was incredibly impressed! This restaurant has been on my list to try for a while and I was not disappointed. It is located in the heart of downtown McKinney and has a modern, rustic interior with both indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant also features a replica of a real prohibition style bar, along with over 250 types of bourbon. To begin out evening, we ordered a bourbon with bitters, orange and cherry as well as a mocktail by request. Our waiter had told us that the bartenders are incredibly talented and would be able to put something non-alcoholic together for me. This mocktail ended up being excellent! It was a perfect mix of cranberry, pinapple, pomegranate and orange. I loved it! For our appetizers, it was very difficult to choose. We ended up ordering the Smoked Red Pepper Pimento Cheese, Hummus and the Hydromain Caesar Salad. I absolutely loved the pimento cheese, it was just the right amount of spiciness and came with some excellent sourdough toasts. The hummus was also delicious, however the grilled local pita was a little more bland. The caesar salad was one of my favorite caesars I have had in a while. It came with creamy lemon dressing and sourdough croutons. The appetizers were all perfect! For our entrees, we ordered the 44 Farms NY Strip 12 oz and the Ribeye 20 oz steaks. These were both perfectly cooked to their requested doneness of medium well and medium rare. They also came along with 3 sauces, the Cabernet Demi, Chimichurri, and Horseradish Crema. I thoroughly enjoyed each of these with the steaks, especially the chimichurri sauce. Overall, the steaks were great for their price point and I truly loved the smoked taste and delectable texture of them. For our side, we ordered the LOYO Mac N' Cheese, which is their macaroni and cheese with Wagyu beef bacon. This was under their 'Favorites' on the menu, and I absolutely see why. This was my favorite dish of the night! The pasta shells were perfectly creamy and paired amazingly with the beef bacon and green chiles. If you're going to order anything, please get this! We also had the Roasted Beets with Texas Goat Cheese and Smoked Pecans. This was also a perfect side for our steaks and so delicious, especially the goat cheese. This was our second visit to Local Yocal. Four of us visited. We had mixed reviews. We all agreed that our food was fresh and tasted great. The variables came with size of portions. The chicken fried steak plate is huge while the roasted chicken breast plate is more like a small appetizer than a meal. If you are a light eater, go with this one. The YOLO Mac-n-cheese topped with chopped brisket is a meal in itself. The shrimp and grits was an average portion and they do allow you to substitute with grilled shrimp, if that's your preference. The service was friendly and attentive. Our waitress took time to answer our questions and offer suggestions. The food service seemed a bit slow, but we did visit on a Saturday around 7pm so we didn't see it as a problem. The ambiance is themed to the local history and well thought out. It's not too loud to have a table conversation but not so quiet as to feel solemn. Seating is all comfortable, table or booth. Great job on the booths though y'all. They are roomy and well lit. The overall layout of the restaurant is perfect for a date night or family dinner. If you're going to put "BBQ" in the name of the restaurant when Hutchins is down the street, you better bring it with the BBQ sampler plate. It was in fact, brought. The brisket and smoked sausage were tremendous. For main courses, my wife ordered the health-nut grain bowl w/ steak skewers. The bowl was good, the steak was cooked perfectly. I ordered the wild caught mkt special which was swordfish with carrot risotto. I'm not going to say I didn't enjoy it. I will say that I've been here before, and you're making a mistake if you don't order a steak or literally anything else but fish. Man, it pains me to write this review. My family was picking up food from here at least once a week for the last year or so. That is until... We started noticing the portions getting smaller and smaller to the point that a $70 bag of food felt really light. Turns out, they're systematically skimping portion sizes. We chalked it up to a one-off until this last time, we just straight up started weighing the portions. Every single portion was under. In BBQ world, you usually go by quarter pound, half pound, etc... well our quarter pound portion would be 3.5oz and our half pound portion would be 6.5oz. This was a regular occurrence. Now, I get that portion sizes aren't specified in the "individual bbq" plate but come on... what are these portion sizes? Look at all the other complaints on here about portion sizes. We obviously have stopped coming here after figuring this out. Fix your portions or reduce your prices, but don't skimp your customers! Otherwise, food is great. read more

We had family in town so we decided to take them here because our first experience was great but not this time around. There were 7 of us and 5 of our entrees came out cold. One of us ordered a salad before their entree and it did not come out first, it came with our meal and our server said she didn't know he wanted it out first. After bringing up these issues to the manager, I started feeling uncomfortable with the staff because random staff members would walk by our table and stare at us like they obviously were talking about us behind the scenes. Loyo Burger which they don't advertise as being a play on Local Yocal. Great burger option for historic downtown McKinney- much better imo than Square Burger!
