    Ice skating lessons~
    Julia H.

Whoa!!! Such bad reviews! I have to admit I agree with most of the reviews, but if you can ignore/overcome then it's not that bad at all. So, let me start by addressing some of the complaints. The customer service, it is very true that the girls at the front manning the register truly do not care about helping you at all, and yes they are too busy talking with each other and don't expect any smiles or helpful answers to any of your questions. If you go in with very low expectations, it really doesn't matter what their service is like. I mean you are really there to use the ice. The next complaint was about the ice and how it's not clean, but this is not true all the time. There are times when the ice is a little dirty, but it doesn't really change your skating experience. Lastly, the ice skating lessons. My daughter takes ice skating lessons here, and initially when she was in the introduction class, I thought what a waste of time, but I promise it gets better with the pre-alpha class which is after the introduction class. As you can see in my picture, they do try to help with form and learning the skills. The best part is my daughter has access to all the public skating times because she takes lessons here. I think that's a great deal! If you can just overlook everything else, it is a nice place, and as long as your child loves it, it really doesn't matter. My daughter told me I should give the place 5 stars, but I told her that I need to take one star for the customer service, and she agrees! Last reminders, don't forget to bring a jacket, it's cold down there and make sure to grab some snacks if you are staying a few hours because they have some expensive vending machines that your child might ask you to buy for them! Good luck!

The ice at the rink - such bad quality you can barely skate on it, so bumpy

This place is horrible. Quite literally the worst ice skating rink i've ever been to. The building is practically falling apart (see picture) and the ice quality is really bad. They don't go around with the zamboni enough so the ice is super bumpy and it's basically worn down to almost the underneath floor. They increased prices for the holidays to $20 for this horrible ice quality? Btw I asked them to go around with the zamboni and they refused even though the ice quality was horrible. Would give 0 stars if I could

The facility is a bit old and rundown, but overall their rink is pretty good. It tends to get crowded during public sessions.

Afternoons are definitely crowded up to 8pm. But we tried the 8pm - 10pm and you have a lot of space. They have a good number of skates to rent. Mostly the basic gray ones. They have a lot of benches to sit down. They also have available lockers to rent. The bathrooms are decent. They also have the store in the building which offer services too, which is convenient. They also have vending machines and a food bar at the second floor. Parking can be a challenge before another shift ends. But after they leave, it's enough for the next batch.

This is easily one of the most interesting places in SF, hands down. We had a chance to pay our respects by way of celebrating my best friend's birthday here. What a find...! We purchased tickets on Eventbrite a few weeks in advance. Our session was 4:30-6:00 pm. Onsite, we rented skates for $5. No half sizes, but my 8.5 feet fit in a 9 just fine. Decked out with disco lights, the church glows vibrantly against the backdrop of its stained glass windows. Music of all eras reverberates through the high ceilings, a welcome greeting to all. I didn't realize that we were graced with the presence of the Godfather of Skate, D. himself! I should have done my research earlier. He casually swung by, in full purple regalia, and gave my struggling newbie self some tips. Within 10 mins, I was skating without shaking at all??? I never got to properly thank him...! I'll be sure to next time. NOTE: Bring cash to rent skates!

The only downfall is that the ice rink lobby area is not well kept. It could be that it was impacted from the pandemic, which I understand, but hopefully, as the economy picks back up management will be able to invest more in the cleanliness and organization of the lockers, food options, cleanliness, party area and overall appearance of the lobby to make it more appealing to visitors and improve the quality of the experience here.

However, because it's the only rink around for miles, it's booked up with lessons, freestyle skate time, hockey games and private events. Public skate times are rare and usually during working hours. For those on hockey teams, the schedule can be all over the place because ice time is at a premium. The price for public skate is also the most expensive one in the Bay Area if you have your own skates. As of 2024, its $20. For reference, Yerba Buena in SF is $14 for GA and Sharks Ice in Fremont and San Jose are $16, Snoopy's Home Ice in Santa Rosa is $8-$14 depending on the day of week, and Oakland Ice is $16 with an additional 10% off for Oakland residents. In addition, the other rinks have passes for frequent skaters that drops the price more. Now if you factor in the cost of skate rentals, then San Mateo is in line with most places but Ice Oasis doesn't give a price break for not renting skates. That being said, because I live in San Mateo, this is my best option for now and I don't want them to close. I just wish their economics and schedule could more closely mimic the other rinks.
