Johan is a magician. Five stars and then some…read more I have very long, wavy hair. I love my length and I love my waves, but after I had a kid and turned 40, my frizz had gotten completely out of control. The frizz made my hair puffy and unmanageable, and I was wearing it up or under a hat most of the time. I tried keratin, other smoothing treatments, different kinds of cuts. Nothing worked. I did a ton of research and eventually found Johan and his perfect reviews. I was a little afraid to mess with my hair in what seemed like an extreme way, but I went for it. From our first chat, it was obvious that Johan is special. He starts with an extremely thorough consultation. We talked for about an hour about my hair, its history, what I liked, what wasn't working, exactly how much wave I wanted to keep, how I wanted it to behave, etc. He doesn't charge for the consultation, which I appreciated. Plenty of people charge just to have that conversation, which feels icky. Nothing about my experience with Johan felt icky. Every step of the way, he is very clearly focused on figuring out whether and how he can actually help you. His whole approach is diagnosis-led rather than one-size-fits-all. This is evident throughout the experience. Johan is incredibly intentional about how he treats every section of your hair and how much wave or texture to leave based on what you've told him you want. We also ended up doing a subtle cut because he explained that once my hair was smoother and the frizz and puffiness were gone, its current shape wouldn't work as well. That's a good example of how holistic and thoughtful he is. He's not just doing a treatment; he's thinking about what your hair is going to look and behave like afterward from all angles. Johan made what could be a daunting experience very easy and clear. He explained what he was doing every step of the way and sent me home with detailed aftercare instructions and products. And despite how long the appointment was -- I have a LOT of hair -- we had a great time. He's the best. The results are unreal. My hair looks good every single day for real. It's healthy-looking, shiny, smooth, and, most importantly, I have total control over it. Its default is mostly straight with a slight wave, but if I put it in one or two braids I can increase the wave as much as I want. It's not an exaggeration to say this treatment has made my life better/easier. Having to hide your hair every day can take a toll! I wear it down all the time now. I get compliments constantly. I no longer have to think about how I'm going to contain it every morning. I can't believe this man and this treatment exist. It feels like actual magic. Johan is a true expert and a hair whisperer. Anyway, my anniversary was coming up and I wanted to treat myself. I had been following JBH Studios on the gram for some time and thought I would give it a try. The owner is a proud Haitian woman like me with serious natural hair. I like what she stands for. Loved the pics with her Dad! I found her website was pretty descriptive and I didn't feel like there were going to be any surprises. I was a little scared about the lateness fees and things like that but I am a punctual person so ... When I arrived I was greeted immediately and offered water and tea. My coat was taken and I was given a robe and a name tag. I liked this immediately. I did wait a little bit and was like worried but as soon as I met Lena, my hair stylist, any fears I had went away. Lena is the most disarming person I have ever encountered in a salon. We quickly developed an easy rapport. I was having a wash, silk press and trim. End result? I didn't know how much I needed this in my life! This was a complete #BlackGirlMagic experience. The hair wash put me to sleep! The shampoo had a peppermint feeling on my scalp and Lena was gentle but firm on my messy scalp. The blow out was super gentle with little heat. Then she pressed my hair and I didn't even have to hold my ears. I never felt heat on my scalp like I normally do. Okkkuurrr! But the trim was going to be the most challenging. I didn't want a cut... and that does happen with a less experienced stylist. A trim becomes an inch or two off. Well, Lena gave me a mirror and showed me where the dead ends were and discussed her plan with me. I was in complete agreement. And she TRIMMED it exactly as she had told me. I have never felt so relaxed at a salon before. But what was the best part? Everyone in the salon was talking and being included and we were having a great time - in an upscale professional way. All the ladies there were wonderful to chat with. And when I left, my hair was EVERYTHING. It was like I was in a Breck commercial! My hair was silky and healthy and bounced when I walked down the street. I was snapping my head to look at traffic and my hair would SMACK me in my face! I even got compliments on the elevator from two Black women with natural hair, who were super excited when I told them I just got my hair done on the 4th floor! I gave them the info so they could go themselves. Overall, this was a great experience and I will be including this in my life as a treat yo'self necessity. Keep in mind that 75 minutes is a benchmark, probably but I wasn't waiting at any point except in the beginning. Also, no matter my skills, I cannot get my hair to look like this. The next morning after NOT sleeping in a hair wrap, my hair was remarkably STILL straight.

It all started when I went to Olga for a "consultation" for extensions on the recommendation of a friend... and left with a full head of luxurious long locks! Olga has since opened her own salon, All Keratin Specialists, and not only is my hair looking top notch, but it's fun to go! Olga is truly gifted and Auggie, who has done my hair several times when Olga wasn't available, has got that special touch, too! Not only are they incredibly talented but they are also the best, warmest and kindest people. It's a true pleasure to spend time with them. Oh, and I should mention, they have a unique technique for doing extensions that does not damage my hair one bit and still allows me to put my hair up on a high ponytail, two rarities with other extensions.
