I live for their jalapeño popcorn chicken. I have been here several time and food is always fresh and hot. If you love to steam coming from food that's out this is the place food. Very busy afternoon, many waitresses, who were so quick about clearing tables that my water glass kept being taken away! Clean restrooms. My brother recommended this place for crab, so we decided to make the drive here to give it a try. The dinner is $22.99 and in my opinion, it's very much so worth it for the crab alone. The other items were a bit mid, especially their sushi selection, but I knew I wasn't there for that anyway. It's not a vibey spot by any means. It feels very much so cafeteria like and a bit sterile, but I guess at that price point, you shouldn't be expecting anything crazy. Been to Ichiban Buffet a few times now and whewwww... DO NOT come here on a holiday weekend unless you enjoy survival games and fighting strangers for crab legs!!! The place turns into absolute chaos on holiday weekends!! The entrance line? Long!!! Food line? Even longer!!!! There are a billion people in line waiting!! Grill guy looked like he was one inconvenience away from quitting on the spot!! Even the customers start acting like it's Black Friday at Walmart!!! Pro tip nobody tells you: CHECK IN AT THE FRONT AND GRAB A NUMBER!!! Apparently that's how the line works, but the crowd standing around inside gatekeeps that information like it's classified government intel!! Parking tip: stop battling for the front spots like it's the last helicopter out of an action movie. Park on the SIDE of the restaurant. Tons of parking and honestly probably less walking anyway. Now the important part... THE FOOD. I originally came because Yelpers baited me with photos of giant beef ribs. The restaurant used to have em but no longer serves it. Emotional damage!! The betrayal!!! Both times? Only pork ribs!!! BUT they did have NY steak at the Mongolian grill, plus beef pot roast and beef broccoli. The chicken wings though?? Absolutely dangerous!! Crispy little blessings from heaven. Most of the chicken and veggie dishes were honestly really good too!! Seafood lovers are gonna lose their minds here because they have SO MUCH seafood!! Huge crab halves, crayfish, salmon, shrimp, mussels, fried fish... basically the ocean filed for unemployment and showed up at this buffet!!! Hubby loved the mussels!! Also shocking discovery: they had a giant pile of sliced dragonfruit sitting out at the fruit section like we're all billionaires now. Dragonfruit is crazy expensive!! Overall, the food tastes super fresh compared to a lot of other buffets, and for around $23 a person, this place is honestly a steal!!! I'm still mourning the missing beef ribs, but the variety and quality definitely made up for it. Coming through this side of town, I figured I'd give Ichiban Buffet a shot. Dinner was only $23, so it sounded like a solid deal. It's tucked away near the end of a quiet strip mall with plenty of parking, and I got seated right away around 7 PM on a Friday. The only downside was the A/C...it was pretty warm and steamy where I was sitting. The food selection was better than I expected, with duck, fried fish in sauce, fresh eggplant, and lots of other choices. For the price, you really can't complain. I had a very delightful experience at Ichiban Buffet (Covina). It's POPULAR and extremely AFFORDABLE! Woah! I had the Saturday Dinner Buffet ($22.99). Surprisingly, the food is cooked/prepared very well for a buffet. I hope those exemplary chefs don't leave anytime soon. (Quick Note: All Seniors 65+ get $1 off. And Kids 3 to 6 are $9.99 for dinner. Also, Saturday & Sunday is All-Day Dinner unlike the weekdays.) I arrived at Ichiban Buffet (Covina) on Saturday (around 11:55AM). I was seated immediately; however, I noticed that the location got very crowded near 1:40PM. Parking is extremely easy; the lot is HUGE. If you're a Covina resident, you'll notice that this buffet is located where the old Hometown Buffet (near the AMC) used to be. Staff is very friendly by the counter. However, Staff becomes very busy and businesslike when doing their responsibilities. Currently, the location felt very efficient and machinelike. Food is regularly refilled. If I were to nitpick, although the plates are fairly clean, it feels like one or two sticky plates scrape through. Fortunately, this buffet does feel relatively clean and comfortable. As mentioned, I had the Saturday Dinner Buffet ($22.99). There's a surprisingly large variety of tasty options! There's sashimi, sushi rolls, crab legs, beef ribs, fish, shrimp, mussels, sho mai, soup, salad, and more. The ice cream station looks a bit rundown, but I can't complain. The food tasted fairly fresh and flavorful for a buffet. It's TASTY and crazy affordable. On ambiance, Ichiban Buffet (Covina) is clean, spacious, and busy. There's so many customers!! My family and I visited this restaurant for the third time and brought friends with us. I am so glad that this restaurant appears to be going to survive, as word of mouth has definitely spread about the value and great food it offers. The restaurant was CROWDED!! Despite the numerous tables in the huge redo, it was no challenge to find a large enough table for our party of nine. During our first two visits, we observed only a handful of customers at the restaurant. Naturally, we were concerned that this restaurant would not survive without support. I am so Glad we were wrong. This restaurant offers such GREAT, fresh, and tasty food. The variety of sushi available is impressive. Each piece of sushi is well-made and tasty, unlike other buffet restaurants. There are so many types of fish, shrimp, crab legs, and other seafood, which is truly impressive. Chicken options are also numerous, including fried, BBQ, and black pepper. There are beef options and many other delicious food options, including but not limited to fruits, veggies, ice Cream and desserts. The employees are all hard workers, clearing tables every 10 to 15 seconds, and the price is UNBELIEVABLE! My party of nine ate like kings and queens. Ichiban Buffet is a new Asian buffet to the city of Covina. This used to be the old Home Town Buffet when i was younger. This location has easy parking since the lots is huge. The location for this buffet is also enormous. They have so many table and booths and even a separate area that could probably be for private parties. The staff greeted and seated us the moment we walk in. We came in on a weekday right before 5PM. They were already starting their dinner by this time. The restaurant was not crowded at all. In terms of selection, they offer many traditional items you would fine at any Asian Buffet. They offer a teppanyaki station, sushi bar, fried food, Chinese food options, some dim sum and soups. They do have crab, crawfish, seafood boil, and cold crab legs too. The value of the buffet per person is definitely worth it. As the time went on the restaurant started to get packed. We visited the Ichiban Buffet for lunch last week around 2 p.m. and, me being a fan of a good buffet, were really hoping for better. There was a good variety of mostly Asian cuisine; however, as mentioned in other reviews, some dishes were good, but most seemed to miss the mark in some way. The salad bar selections were fresh (and I really cannot fault the place on the tasteless melon dishes since that has been typical of the melon crops over the last several seasons), but the soups I sampled (hot and sour & egg drop) lacked flavor. Similarly, the sushi selection was good but the pieces, themselves, also seemed a little flavorless and hard (sitting out too long?) with even the wasabi lacking that customary kick you'd expect. Many of the traditional buffet staples were also disappointing. The egg rolls had very little filling and a thick outer wrapping. Similarly, the cream cheese wontons were hard, scantily filled, and rather flavorless. The chicken skewers were dry. But most disappointing of all was the broccoli beef, which my wife and I agreed had a generous amount of beef but a strange aftertaste to the broccoli. About the only lunchtime offering I went back for was the breaded shrimp. Meh. I didn't try the Mongolian BBQ station, and it didn't seem very popular with the crowd that was there, either. The station selections didn't really look that appetizing, and the server seemed occupied with other duties when I passed by. As for desserts, there was a section devoted to the usual offerings including cake slices, pastries, and cookies. While they did offer a selection of ice cream flavors, the tubs were "serve yourself" with a common scooper for all stored in running water alongside the freezer unit. My wife noticed that one young girl was bent over the case attempting to scoop from a back tub with her stringy hair hanging in the nearer selections - GROSS! They really should have a server at this station to ensure sanitary conditions - but it is a buffet, after all. Maybe dandruff- (or, possibly, lice) - is an unadvertised complimentary topping. On the bright side, the lunch prices were reasonable (around $17 w/o an added beverage) and the staff members were pleasant and responsive in removing empty plates and filling drinks. The ambiance is that of the typical buffet, and the clientele is also the usual buffet crew - replete with unmonitored kids running around. The place was doing a decent "late lunch" business, but much of the food seemed to have been sitting under the warming lamps too long. I really wanted to like this place but, from my initial impression, I'm unwilling to battle the dinner crowds for another visit, despite the prospect of crab legs and higher-end entree selections. It wasn't that impressive and typifies the old adage "you get what you pay for." If you appreciate a good value where quantity is a priority, then go visit; if you appreciate quality, save your money. read more

My family saw this place just opened and we decided to come for a Sunday lunch. The price is the same all day for weekends. They had an adorable Shin Chan statue in the front with a beautiful waterfall display. The table we sat at was near the back next to the Mongolian grill. I definitely enjoyed their crab and short ribs, very good and I had several helpings. I do like they had a lot of fried food options for the kids and their dessert and fruit section was larger than other buffets I tried. I didn't eat any sushi because I dipped up on their seafood, fried foods, baked mussels, and steamed options. Unfortunately, some foods were too tough to eat such as roast beef, teriyaki chicken, chicken skewers, and some of the beef dishes. I had to stop eating them as I couldn't chew them. The servers were not around much, I think there was only a few and as it got busy, they made only a few trips to our table. We didn't need much attention, but I can tell when it's busy they are running everywhere. The ice cream options were nice, hand scooped and 8 flavors! Ichiban Buffet's atmosphere was amazing. The food stations were very clean and full with a large variety of protein. I had sushi, baked salmon, shrimp, clams, steamed rice, and kimchi. Let me just say, ALL of the food was fresh!! The salad bar was filled with a large variety of fruits, jello, and cookies. They also had ice cream in 4 or 5 different flavors. Making it very easy for one to over indulge. The employees were constantly filling up each station with fresh hot/cold food. And the servers were attentive, and making sure drinks were filled at all times. This was my first visit because they have been open about a week but it won't be my last. Came here for late lunch (which is available until 3:30 PM). Parking is super easy since the plaza has a large lot. Prices are reasonable and they have a great variety of food offerings. The fruit was a big hit! The sushi was decent (have had better elsewhere but for the price, it is more than satisfactory). Liked that we see staff preparing the sushi and that they try to put more fresh food out as diners come. Would have liked that each item was clearly identified. NGL, some food items were definitely better than others. The noodles had an off taste and some of the meat items were a bit tough or rubbery. A few items seemed the same and had a mushroom taste to them (not exactly appetizing if you don't particularly care for the taste). However, for the price, this buffet offers a bang for your buck! Liked that fellow diners seem to enjoy their meal. BIG PLUS! Overall, we had a pleasant dining experience. This was a nice buffet. I will start off by mentioning that this place seems clean and well kept. Staff is friendly and they kept my soda cup filled for my entire visit. Let's get to the food. Unfortunately it was not so great. Shrimp tasted old and bland and not very fresh flavors at all in the seafood section. Sausage was okay. Their rangoons were good. Broccoli beef was tasty the butter shrimp was just okay. Their soup I only tasted one that had a bunch of diced jalapeños in it and giant head on shrimp. Grabbed a small amt to taste and it was all spice but no flavors and the shrimp tasted off that I decided not to eat it. Egg rolls were crispy but lightly filed. It was mainly all dough. The fruit I will admit was very fresh and delicious. Absolutely yummy. I also tried a small plate of their I'm not sure if they call it Mongolian bbq as well but basically it was chicken, beef, sausage, and imitation crab as the protein. I didn't feel comfortable trying the chicken because the chicken looked brown. So I grabbed like 3 small pieces of beef and the veggies and they cooked it and I asked for all the sauces. I didn't like that either. However the guy seasoned it, it was very acidic or too much vinegar. I didn't like it. Meat was okay. Lastly, I'd like to add that before leaving I wanted to use the restroom so my daughter and I walked into the women's restroom and it had a very strong smell of sewer. And there was toilet paper and toilet seat cover paper all over the floor. Every single stall was a mess. Not only did it reek in there, but it was also very filthy. I felt like it was your average chinese all-you-can-eat buffet; nothing was amazing or stood out. A couple of the trays were empty; they didn't really keep up with keeps everything stocked. Including the ice cream; one if the flavor was all out. There were some items that I normally don't see at other buffets, so that was cool. The waitress tried to carry too much while cleaning our table and dropped the plates, and some of the food got on my cousin's back. Hmm.. where do I start? First things first, please make sure you ask about pricing and time changes before you get embarrassed eating out with your family. It was our first time there so we didn't know the lunch and dinner times. As soon as we entered we were greeted and were asked to follow the hostess to our seat. We started getting our food and towards the end I seen there where putting our crab legs so I asked my husband to get me a plate of 3 not many. He brought it over to our table then a lady approached us asking if we could not get the sea food. I was so confused being it was a buffet, I told her okay. Her English wasn't so good so another lady came by later and said you need to pay more to get seafood. She clarified that they started to serve dinner now and it included the seafood. She asked if I wanted to pay for dinner, which it wasn't much more but I just wanted those three since I was about full and leaving soon. I told her no, she persisted for me to pay. I told her no we are about to leave if she wanted to take the plate she could. I was surprised to see that the girl where bunched up and looking at me to see if I got up to get anymore food. it was uncomfortable. There's a pic of them glancing here and there. They found out I caught them and took off after. I got to say the food was good and the other people eating their food were very chatty with us because of our baby looking over. There was good variety of foods and dessert options. The cake ice cream flavor was my fav! Another thing I didn't like was that there weren't no diaper changing area in the restroom. Bathrooms were not clean food was not hot lots of stuff empty food quality not so great ! Finally made it back to try their lunch & selection is well-worth the value on their price point which most restaurants charge just only for one plateful of a dish nowadays. Panda Express 1 rice/noodles with 3 main dish combo is already at $13.50 so at $16.99 with an added options of salad, sushi, seafood & sweet desserts, is it a better option? If you are not particular about paying $9-10 more per person, then I would say Umi & Shiki Buffet definitely will give you a slightly better selection. But if you have a family, the price difference adds up to a tank full of gas. And frankly, how much can one really eat which on average is most likely around two plateful. So, I do not see the point of paying more. This is especially true when you have members in your party (like children) who will only eat pizza & noodles. Their selection on seafood on lunchtime includes 4-5 different kinds of fish dish, 3-4 kinds of shrimp dish plus the usual orange & teriyaki chicken. The dimsum section offers chicken feet which is an Asian delicacy rarely offered in other places. And their siomai, by far, is the best-tasting of all buffet places including Umi & Shiki. As far as service, they are all similar in cleaning up your used plates quickly. In fact, somehow this place feels less confined because of their spacious dining area. read more
