This was my first time going to Sushi Mura in West Covina. It is located in the same plaza as the Thai Massage place that I go to. So after the massage, I decided to try this place out. I was here during dinner and at the time there weren't that many people just a large party and us. The place looks clean, modern, and new. I enjoyed the salmon skin salad, but the roll dishes and sushi dishes that had rice was a little bit too hard. Just would say to change the rice quality. This restaurant is now under new management. I had ordered takeout from here before and remembered it being pretty good, so I decided to give it another try on Valentine's Day. Right away, I noticed the menu had changed quite a bit. When I called to place my order at 8 PM, they told me it would take 30 minutes, which was longer than usual, but they asked if I was okay with that, which I appreciated. Given the day, I expected a bit of a wait, so I had no issue with it. I arrived right at the 30-minute mark, but my order wasn't ready. The woman at the register apologized and assured me it would be out soon, which again, wasn't a problem. However, as I waited, I noticed the restaurant actually wasn't very busy. What stood out even more was that dine in customers who ordered after I arrived were receiving their food before I did. Another party that arrived after I had already been waiting for 15 minutes also got their order before I did. It's clear that this place still needs some work. It has the feel of a family-run restaurant, which I usually appreciate, but the organization and service could definitely use improvement. I ended up waiting an additional 30 minutes in the restaurant, and no one provided an update. I was actually about to leave when I saw an order being bagged and luckily, it was mine, or I probably would've just walked out. In hindsight, I wish I had. I ordered the deluxe sushi and sashimi combo, which came with two miso soups (one extra as an apology for the wait), salad and sashimi/sushi. The best part of the meal? The salad. The sashimi looked like it had been cut with a dull knife, and placing it directly on top of a cucumber made every piece taste overwhelmingly like cucumber. The miso soup was so bland that we ended up tossing both portions. This place might be a good option for people who enjoy rolls. I overheard some customers complimenting them on their rolls. The way they prioritized dine-in customers over takeout left a bad impression, and unfortunately, the food didn't make up for it. read more

I heard a customer order the same thing I ordered when I was waiting for my food and they got their order first.. I want to say we waited 1 hour total for our food to be ready. The lady gave us an extra miso soup for the long wait. Which didn't even taste good, had no flavor and we didn't even bother finishing the 1. Get our food and the pieces of sushi that was placed over a whole cucumber just made the fish taste like cucumber, the pieces were cut very poorly, uneven and overall fish tasted like it had been sitting for too long. So the lunch time ayce sushi is affordable and pretty good just a very small menu that is not diverse. The service was pretty good. It was my first time there and the service gave me all the time I needed to order and helped answer all the questions I had with no hesitation. And they are also very helpful when it comes to making sure you are not charged extra for not finishing your food. Making sure you don't order too much at one time. One thing that was different for me was that they brought all my sushi out at once rather than bring it as it was finishing being made. The ambiance of the restaurant is very simple. It's nice and quite not much to complain about. After I ate my sushi I sat for a while and just watched what they had on tv and they said goodbye when I left. I can't remember every item that was included but snapper and kanpachi were my favorite. My wife's chirashi bowl wasn't too impressive for $49. It came with 12 pieces of sashimi but they were all pretty typical ones, nothing exotic or special. I know several other places with better chirashi bowl that charge less than this. I took a bite of one of the sashimi pieces and it tasted kind of weird. Chicken kara-age wasn't good. There was hardly any seasoning on the batter and it wasn't crispy. It came with sweet soy dipping sauce, which carried all the flavor. I also noticed the price isn't updated on its website. Fine dining in West Covina?? And super close to me too? More likely than you think. Sushi Mura is located in an unassuming suburban plaza where parking can get a bit tight, but there is a little section of the lot towards the back end next to the condos. We went right around opening on a Monday and we were seated promptly. It got a bit busier as the night went on, but service was friendly, welcoming, and very attentive. They have their specials of the day/season as well as food that is not on their menu. Just check out the chalk boards they have in the restaurant! We got complimentary miso soup and edamame and our water glasses were never empty. It has a very cozy, fancier vibe without being too over the top or unwelcoming. For dinner, we got the: 1) Taira Saikyo Yaki - Black Cod: -It's marinated black cod in saikyo miso -Absolutely delicious. Melts in your mouth. -Sweetness of the miso with the tender fish is absolutely divine. 2) Mana Katsuo Saikyo - Steam Star Butter Fish: -This is similar to the black cod as it's a hot appetizer dish. -The saikyo miso was also used, but the texture of the fish id completely different. Much fluffier and has a bit more of a chew to it. -Also very delicious. 3) Finding Nemo Roll: -Comes with five pieces. -It is STUFFED with fish and asparagus and is topped with avocado and ikura (fish roe). The inside of the roll had salmon, tuna, and another fish. -Large rolls that had an amazing rice to fish ratio. The asparagus was cooked perfectly (not too soft from over cooking and not too hard/crunchy from being almost raw). -I actually didn't know this was a roll at first, but it's pretty good. 4) Aburi Salmon: -This is sliced salmon sashimi with pink rock salt and truffle. -Fancy looking, but delicious in its taste. An absolute must get for me now! 5) Nigiri - Unagi, Kurodai (black sea bream), Kinmedai (golden eye snapper), Bluefin tuna & belly, Salmon belly, Albacore, Yellowtail belly: -All of the nigiri had the perfect fish to rice ratio, served at the perfect temperature, nicely formed without falling apart, fish is super fresh and high quality. So, so good. -I love that they have cuts of fish that you usually don't see at other sushi places, but just keep in mind that stock is limited so you might not be able to order them until they're shipped. -Loved the yellowtail belly as it's a fish that I always have, but I've never had the cut of its belly before. Super good. I'm so happy that this higher end sushi place is so much closer. You're definitely paying for delicious quality here! read more

Found this spot on Yelp and decided to give it a try. When we arrived we were surprised that no one was dining inside, however, it was an hour until they closed and a Wednesday. We were greeted immediately and were able to choose where we wanted to sit. For an appetizer we had Shrimp Tempura and some Strawberry Soju. Our entree included the Bush Family Roll, the Ya Ya Roll, and the spicy seared tuna. I was incredibly impressed with how delicious and fresh everything was. That, mixed with the really great service, made it a great experience. The waiter heard me singing to a song and turned up the music so we could enjoy it. When we walked in, we were kindly greeted by the server/host. They quickly combined two tables together to accommodate our party of 7. The atmosphere is very clean and cozy. I love the bar seating!!! Something about seeing the sushi chefs prepare the food in front of you, takes the experience to a whole new level. Next time, I will opt to sit at the bar. The sushi here is FRESH. The MUST-TRY when you come to the location is: Tuna Sampler Oishi Roll Sashimi Salad These were my top 3 dishes of the night. Although a bit pricey for the tuna sampler, the quality and mouthwatering taste of each piece is to die for. When I hit into the piece, it dissolved almost instantly. The oishi roll was SPLENDID. The fish on top melted with every bite and combined with the roll perfectly. And finally the sashimi salad has MASSIVE chunks of fish. Add a little soy sauce and wasabi to the side and start munching away. The veggies were crunchy and nicely seasoned. And this might be my favorite salad to eat ALL-TIME. Some side comments that could make the experience better. The Karage Chicken was a little under-seasoned. The crust itself and the lemon on the side is good, but the chicken inside had no taste to it. But overall, this is another excellent place to job sushi if you are in the area. But the waitress informed us that they don't do omakase on the weekends due to the number of orders they receive... so we decided to order the chirashi bowl instead.
