I can't remember the name on the menu, but my roll had spicy tuna, tempura shrimp, crab, and fried rice paper. I liked it because it was so spicy. Some places are a bit too spicy for my liking or the flavor is too smoky. I do think the tuna could've had a little more spice but still enjoyable. My partner got the Philly roll (I think it was like a double version of the salmon). Finally, we split the James to get the best of both worlds. I have a wide range of sushi likes ranging from "high end" hand rolls like Kazunori and YUNOMI as an LA native but more Basic rolls like this average anywhere from 60-80 dollars for three rolls but here they have BUY TWO GET ONE FREE! What!? Unheard of I literally almost wanted to pay 60$ because how is it possible it's so cheap! And the rolls are very well portioned. I'm sorry I didn't take pictures of the food I inhaled it but we got and loved the red lady (I think ) and the crunchy albacore roll! The sauces were so lovely on these rolls and the portions were fantastic! It wasn't heavy or oily and everything tasted so fresh and light. Perfectly balanced sauces lemony, sweet, just delicious! You also get a free Miso soup and that was delicious too and a nice size bowl. I wish we lived closer but anytime we are around here I will definitely be coming back. Ordered the buy two get one but all the rolls came with eel sauce. I don't remember seeing anything on the menu or pictures with eel sauce so it was disappointing as I don't like my rolls covered in sauce. We compromised and only mentioned 1 of the rolls to the server (she was great!) and she said she would have them remade. I told her it's ok don't worry about it Im not that hungry but she said it's the free roll so it's ok. She leaves to go tell the chef who may or may not be the owner to remake them and in the reflection of the window I can see him visibly upset shaking is head side to side and pacing back and fourth. He said something to her in a different language that didn't sound very pleasant. The whole time he's remaking my rolls he's slamming things banging on the equipment being extremely passive aggressive. The girl I was there with was facing him so he was doing all of this on purpose so she could see he was angry because the server asked him to remake the rolls because I didn't know they all came with eel sauce. I have NEVER experienced a chef, owner or server act this unprofessional in a restaurant towards me or my party. I could have easily gotten up and confronted his little tantrum but I didn't want to ruin the dinner anymore than it was already ruined or make a scene. This is my second time here with the new owners, well first off, it had been about two months before coming back from the last time with the former owner or "Itamae." They have quite an extensive menu. My favorite is the 3 item bento box combination (chicken, beef or salmon). I usually get chicken or salmon on a bed of rice and tempura vegetables with shrimp. And a choice of items, I also select a spicy or regular California roll sushi, it comes with a small salad and Miso soup. Recently, I also found the portions to be smaller then before, most notably are the salad, sushi and tempura vegetables with shrimp. Food quality is good, don't get me wrong, but just not as inviting as before. Although their service is good, it just doesn't remind me of a sushi-ya that I would order nigiri and feel omakase from an Itamae that doesn't wear a sushi chef coat with maybe a hashimaki, instead of a black tea shirt and black apron, tradition being more than just an art form. The ambiance is good, I think a better selection of music, not rap, would maybe entice more customers. I don't eat sushi often, so when I do it's a treat. I pay attention to the little things the entice me to return! Arigato gozaimasu for a nice dinner! May I make another suggestion to advertise more, S&R is in a strip mall that most people just look at while passing by, nothing to draw their attention. read more
