First time there. Went inside with no expectations and come out with no surprises. The price is good - $less than $30 for 2 person for lunch. The start serving some soba, in mini cup, and another bowl of miso soup. We ordered the bento with chicken teriyaki and salmon teriyaki. The chicken and salmon are below average, but safe for consumption and no weird/fishy smell. The tempura was good, but this is from someone who was on diet and did not eat tempura for over a year. In addition to the shrimps, there is a piece of yam and pumpkin, both my favourite. We didn't touch the salad. The service was mediocre. Nothing good or bad about it (except you have to ask for tea refills). For the sake of eating (and not tasting), it was good. No sure if I will go again...

On the north/east side of Yonge and Sheppard, on Spring Garden, Ichiban is on an asian strip of restaurants. Finding parking isn't always easy, and is usually paid. To begin, they provide two tiny appetizers - soba in mini cup and a bowl of edamame, which is nice. I order a bento box. The portion isn't that big compared to most Japanese restaurants. Other places include a few rolls of sushi, as well as dessert. Ichiban had neither. Also, I wasn't feeling full afterwards. It was mid-range, $15 and up. The service was meh. At first they seemed okay, but then they didn't even offer to refill the tea. The restaurant wasn't busy on a Friday night.

It has been quite a few years since my last time at Ichiban Fish House. I was in the neighbourhood with a friend and we decided to go in. We were greeted by a polite hostess and she took us to our table. It has a nice sized dining area with many tables having partitions for privacy. It was near the tail end of the busy lunch rush, so even though you had to flag the wait staff down, service was very polite, fast and efficient. You're given barley tea to sip on as you peruse their menus. After we ordered, they gave a crunchy noodle soup as a free appetizer. Soy flavoured base with soft noodles and crunchy tempura bits. It wasn't too bad. They followed it with our miso soups. Their soup is heavy on the miso paste. Surprisingly, our soups didn't have any green onion. I'm not sure if that's their norm, but I dislike green onions so it was really nice for me! Next came our meals. I ordered the Salmon Lover Set and my friend got the Teriyaki Chicken lunch special. In the Salmon Lover Set is: 6pcs spicy salmon roll, 6 pcs salmon nigiri, 6 pcs of salmon sashimi. The spicy salmon rolls were lacking spice and were actually pretty dry. Their salmon sashimi and nigiri would good and fresh though. The sushi rice had good texture and flavour. In the Teriyaki Chicken lunch combo: green salad, 6 pcs cali roll, tempura (2 shrimp, yam and kabocha squash), and teriyaki chicken. The green salad dressing was good. The salad and cali rolls were fresh. The teriyaki chicken had a really great grill/char taste. The tempura was tasty, light and crisp. However, the tempura sauce was heavy with cinnamon. I love cinnamon but for me, it did not mesh well. I'm really glad I didn't order tempura for myself because I really disliked the sauce. My friend said she didn't mind it but definitely didn't prefer it. All in all, it was just okay. There are plenty of other sushi places that taste better with similar pricing. So I wouldn't purposefully want to go back. If you do plan on going (and are able to), I suggest avoiding the weekday lunch hour rush!

I have been to Ichiban on Spring Garden many many times. I have never tried their bento boxes, but when it comes to sashimi, they are the best in the area. Super fresh, perfectly cut. Their boats are amazing. They don't serve rice with the sashimi so you have to order it on the side, which in my opinion is fair considering how low their prices are. I just love this place! You should definitely try it. I will be back for another boat as soon as the pandemic is over.

We were planning to go to Sushi Moto but we could only find parking on the far end of Spring Garden. It was way too cold and windy to walk all the way to Moto, so we decided to go to Ichiban fish house that was nearby. The food was just ok, but the service was excellent. My boyfriend ordered Ichiban udon and I had black pearl roll. We shared edamamy and bulgogi appetizers. Everything was very bland and we didn't even finish our meals. They have great sake selection, we followed waitress's recommendation, and it was really good sake, though pricey. Overall, this place is not recommended. If not for super nice and friendly service and great sake, this would be a 2 star review.

    Seafood Udon.

I really want it to like this place. This restaurant is located in North York where you'll probably find better Asians restaurants than this. Although this is a Japanese restaurant, it is owned by Koreans. The decor is nice. The restaurant was fairly busy when we were there and service was attentive but the food was very disappointing. I ordered the Seafood Udon and the broth was flavourless and as you can tell by the picture, there was little amount of noodles. I'm willing to give this restaurant another chance but if the rest of their menu taste like the Udon, it will be my last time. Hopeful...

Tucked away on a street off of Yonge, here's a charming little Japanese restaurant that offers great service, fresh food, and a charm that some of the new "trendy" places don't offer anymore. As it is near Yonge and Sheppard, parking is always a hit or miss situation but if you're patient you can usually find street parking nearby (I always have). I will preface this by saying my family comes here with our family friends all the time, and I guess now that I moved away from Toronto, every time I'm back. I think it's because the quality of the fish here is usually pretty good. The service is always accommodating of our larger group. We usually have about 10-15 people when we go. If we book enough in advance, we can get this corner "room" it's like an enclosed corner, sort of away from the rest of the tables. Like I said earlier the food is generally fresh, no fishy taste for the sashimi, sushi or rolls. The udon is pretty solid as well, good texture and the soup is always packed with various toppings that you'd expect in an udon. My parents usually get the set dinners, things like teriyaki chicken or beef, spare ribs, and things like that. The price isn't too bad on them either, if you don't want to build your own dinner with various rolls and sushi a la carte. For groups the size that we have when we go the food always comes out pretty quickly. Miso soups and the basic green salad with the vinegrette always come out almost right away. Any appetizers also come out so we've never really waited too much for food to come. I will say this review is a few months in the making, but every time we go they're fairly consistent. If you like things like tempura, they've got great tempura (not a lot of batter but just enough that it coats and gives the ingredient a good crunch). I also do enjoy their galbee (korean short ribs), I know this is a Japanese restaurant but it's run by a Korean family and they have great korean inspired features as well. The place is pretty quiet, good for small group conversations. If you can make a reservation on busy nights, then do that. But most of the time I think you'd be okay just walking in and getting a table for smaller groups of 2-6 people. The decor is what you'd expect a sushi place to be as decorated back in probably the 90's. As mentioned earlier, the service is top notch. They usually check in on our group a few times throughout the night, just enough that we know they're there, but not enough that it becomes annoying. All in all, the food is pretty solid (not the best but better than the average AYCE), service is always quick and friendly, and it has a charm that makes you feel welcome each time.

    Sushi pizza and shrimp tempura

I go to Ichiban whenever I have a Sushi Pizza craving. It's the best Sushi pizza in the area. This place is kind of hidden on a side street off Yonge street but they have been in business for a long time. The place really needed a makeover. Most people just get takeout. But during the lockdown they started renovating to spread the tables out more and it just opened up for dine in.the interior finally matches the food. There's a few Sushi places in the area but this one is my favourite. I got the shrimp tempura this time. They were huge and their tempura is light and not greasy.

    Small sushi and sashimi boat
    Myra L.

This establishment has been around for a long time, and in a fast pace, ever changing neighbourhood, that's saying something. The atmosphere feels a bit more suited for different age groups. I know some restos in the area can have a very young hip vibe, but this one feels a bit more homey. My husband and I got the small sashimi and sushi combo (boat). It came loaded with lots of fresh fish - and mostly sashimi. The waitress mentioned that the boat can vary each day depending on what the chef gets. Also many thanks to the chef as he gave us a few more pieces of sashimi. We were stuffed :) The service and value overall was really great. There were a few "on the house" dishes that came our way, including edamame, raw oysters, soba in broth, and mango ice cream. Great surprise! Atmosphere: 4/5 Value: 5/5 Service: 4.5/5 Food: 4/5

    Bento box

Went into this place with two of my friends and had no idea what to expect. Not going to lie but he outside of the restaurant was not very appealing to me but we wanted to try anyways. They had a great selection of bento boxes, rolls, and sashimi. The prices weren't too crazy (12-17 dollars for bento boxes) I got the bento box with calamari. It came with the soup which I didn't like too much. But the bento box came with many options of sushi, glass noodles, rice and some fried veggies with teriyaki sauce, I believe. The wait time was good for us and the service was great. I would probably come back here again to try other options!

Maki set, subbed out tuna for a second spicy cali roll
    Allen S.

Summary: Overall, this isn't a good place. There are nicer places within seconds of walking distance that offer a much better value. It's so easy to opt for something better in North York, so do yourself a favour. Ichiban sushi houses are already questionable for a lot of reasons. Not a very good experience at all. Firstly, they add tea to the menu, I've never in my life had to pay for tea while having sushi, and here they charge $2, and $2 isn't a big deal obviously, however it's the fact that I can walk 30 seconds to one of probably 15 sushi places in the area and they'd never even try to charge for that. The menu is also over priced, but we managed to find the spicy maki set for $13 which seemed on par with other restaurants. It had spicy tuna, spicy California, and spicy salmon. When I asked if I could substitute the tuna for a Philadelphia roll and I'm willing to pay extra, she said no we can't. Why not? Just add some cream cheese into the roll, I'm willing to pay for it. On the bright side we all got tofu and Miso soup with our orders (wasn't noted on the menu so I ordered an extra Miso soup, and when I ordered it still wasn't mentioned that my maki set already comes with Miso soup). Our server was very friendly however, and momentarily that lifted my not-so-great experience. But my friends salmon bento box was served to her, and our maki sets were served about 5-10 minutes later. And try getting anyone's attention to ask them why only one person at our table got their food and the rest of us have to either sit and watch them eat while we're still hungry, or the person who was served feels guilty to start and their grilled food goes cold. The salmon tasted weird and that totally turned me off from all my food. I'm super paranoid after that worldwide raw salmon scare that made everyone very sick a few years ago. Overall, this isn't a good place. There are nicer places within seconds of walking distance that offer a much better value. It's so easy to opt for something better in North York, so do yourself a favour.

Back to why I do this. I'm endlessly curious about food, people, and the magic that happens when great meals meet good music. Friendships just seem to evolve naturally around a table. And thank you, E, for another incredible photo -- your choices are always perfect. Mercado on St. Clair is a hidden gem. What was once beside my mom's flower shop downtown has now found a home in a slightly more industrial setting on Caledonia -- and somehow, it works perfectly. Cozy seating inside, a great covered patio outside, and that village-style European restaurant vibe you hope to stumble across. First off, the waiter was phenomenal. He walked us through the menu, explained everything perfectly, and genuinely elevated the whole experience. The menu is massive -- meat, seafood, everything you could want -- but we came for the paella. We were told it takes time because they make it the proper way. Not overly crispy, just authentic, rich, and layered with flavour. Worth every minute of the wait. To start, we had the gambas / shrimp in a rich red garlic and herb sauce plus extra toasted bread for dipping, per our waiter's recommendation. Absolute rockstar move. The other appetizer was a delicious beef stew served over crunchy rustic bread. Simple, hearty, and top notch. Now... drum roll please. This may have been the best paella I've ever had. Okay okay, maybe somewhere along the coast in Spain I've had one fresher... but this was absolutely off the charts. Zero fishy smell. Just beautiful saffron-infused rice with that perfect slight crisp, loaded with mussels, clams, octopus, calamari, shrimp, and more. Built for two people to share and completely unforgettable. A few glasses of house white later and bam - there was absolutely no chance I was going back to work. And dessert? I kept telling myself: "No dessert, Frank. No dessert." But there's a rule in life ; if you see crème brûlée on a menu, you order it. This wasn't exactly crème brûlée, but a cheesecake-inspired version of it. Two spoons, four bites, and thank you very much. Favourite meal of the year so far. Completely blown away by this place. Mercatto -- go now. Go fast.

Every dish had an excellent presentation. We spent a lot of time taking photos and videos. What did you expect from me?! We loved all the dishes! The portions were large! There are more staff than in the previous location, allowing the service to be excellent. They tend to have many loyal and returning customers. Every table starts with freshly baked bread and butter. The bread was so fresh! The three appetizers tasted good. They each had a little kick due to creole cuisine. I loved the shrimp the most. The Blackened Lamb Chops was perfectly cooked. Each of the four pieces were very tender, accompanied by a delicious sauce. The dish had some very nicely cooked seasonal vegetables: roasted potatoes, a red pepper, string beans, a broccoli, and a carrot. This dish will be put into their regular menu in the near future. The New Orleans Fisherman's Plate is great if you want a little sampling of their seafood: Blackened Fish, Cajun Calamari, and Coconut Beer Shrimp. It also comes with rice and seasonal vegetables. The fish was so good! We brought some home for my mom and she really loved it. The Coconut Beer Shrimp was on top of a Orange Marmalade Sauce, which is really liked. The three desserts looked really good and tasted good. I loved the pecan pie the most. They can split dishes in half in the kitchen and serve them on two dishes for two people to share. The restaurant uses fresh seasonal ingredients and spices to create authentic Creole and Cajun tastes. Everything is made in-house except for bread and butter. In the near future, their bread will be made in-house too. Currently, there is only indoor dining but they are looking into the possibility of sidewalk outdoor dining. Mike Djurdjevic runs the front of the house while his wife, Mira Djurdjevic, operates the kitchen. Their son, Marko, also helps in the front of the house. There is a large pizza oven at the back of the restaurant. They will be introducing creole pizza in the near future. There is a separate large room for events, parties, etc. This room will be ready in the near future. They also do catering. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, but there is no door-open button. There is one gender-neutral washroom, which is also wheelchair accessible, and one female washroom. Thrre is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2026-037
