The Downey City Library's "Friends of the Library" recently had a fundraiser at Ichiban Sushi, so it was the perfect excuse for me to come here for the first time. It was a rainy morning, but the constant drizzle-to-light-rain stopped when I went into the restaurant later for lunch. Then BAM. Lightning struck. Reluctantly, I left my umbrella in the truck. The nice waitress who took my to-go order insisted that I sit down for a complimentary cup of hot tea. After I drank it, I wanted to hurry home to eat since I had already made a separate lunch for our four-year-old there. The same waitress tried to give me an umbrella, but I couldn't. I was just parked across the street in the free parking garage. How nice, though, right?! Such a doll, she was. I agree with Henry N. (8/29/18) in that they serve decent quality sushi here. My tiger roll ($10.95) hit the spot. It was a little more well-put together as opposed to the Philly roll ($8.95). It kept falling apart with each grasp of my chopsticks. Brought my family here for dinner and we got the worst service ever. The waiters were totally avoiding our table.Took almost 20 minutes to get a refill/order more food.once I paid the check I only tipped $10 out of kindness, they did not deserve a tip! On our way out the a male waiter had the nerve to approach us and in front of our kids told us next time they will refuse service because our tip was not good enough. After we expressed our experience never did he bother to apologize he was still asking for a bigger tip. Definitely not coming back. Based on other reviews it seems to be an ongoing issue. Food is always delicious! Love coming here! The thing that messed up a pleasant dinner were kids playing on their parents' phones with the volume on high!! Amazing place for sushi, appetizers, noodles, and rice. There is so much options for the sushi and the waiters are very nice and polite. The waiter we had was funny and checking up on us always. We got so much good food I almost passed out! Honestly there really isn't anything bad about this place unless you don't like sushi. Im not lying when I say it was some of the best sushi I have ever had. Not to mention it has reasonable prices for a lot of food. Very good place to go with family or friends and have a great dinner. If you see it i definitely recommend to go ahead and give it a try. This review is based on my last two visits. My family has been coming here for years. We were here about a month ago and the service from our waitress was bad. She kept skipping by us and we couldn't even get a refill on drinks. I finally flagged down a different waitress so that we could ask for the bill. We left an appropriate tip. We decided to try it again last night and I guess it was just meant to be but we got the same waitress. She was very rude and said that we were going to be charged an 18% service charge before we even ordered our first item. When I began to question it she said "or you can just"....I finished the sentence for her..."leave"? And she said "yes". I have always been very generous with tips when the service is good but when it's really bad I guess it's just time to find a new sushi bar. This was my 2nd time coming here and I have to admit that I didn't find it that enjoyable on either occasion. On this most recent visit, we ordered several items. Out comes our food minus one item. After several minutes we had to ask them what happened to our other item. They told us that the chef had overcooked it and was re-doing it. After 15-20 minutes, and after eating the rest of our items, our plate finally arrived and it was overcooked. This used to be one of our favorite restaurants in Downey. We decided to go ahead one last time since we are relocating and have to say it was a total disappointment. Service was very slow. We had to wait so much in between just to get multiple orders placed, and there was only two of us in the party. Not to mention this was actually during the week so we didn't expect it to be as busy as it was on a weekend which it wasn't but they're slower than on a busy day and our waiter seemed frustrated with having to get more condiments for us. The sushi we ordered was brought to us in a reasonable time and was delicious. 2 waitresses rotated service at our table through the night & we did not have any service issues. Sooo I know I said I wouldn't be back. Buuut We were leaving the movie theater across the street & decided it had been a while...let's drop by Ichiban. Haha, famous last words, right? We ordered 2 beers, sake, 2 rolls and some nigiri. Everything was good until a COCKROACH came out of the sushi bar directly in front of my food. I reacted like a total girl, squealed & pushed myself away from the bar. A server popped up and squished it with her table rag, like the damn roach owned her money. The staff wasn't overly reactive. The sushi chef cared the most and seemed embarrassed. He gave us a partial discount on our meal. I think it was around $20 off. I honestly don't appreciate having to pay for food that shares the same space as cockroaches...I think they really could have handled that better but it is what it is. This is one of a few places I've recently tried here in Downey. I decided to give it a try because its the closest sushi spot to where I live and it's actually pretty good. Not my top choice, that would go to Maui Sushi here in D-town but a solid second place. In my opinion Ichiban is way better than Tokyo Garden which has gone downhill in the last several years. The lady told me that she is in a financial situation and the manager does not pay them enough. then my partner said to her the tip suggestions are suggestions for a reason. he mentioned to her if she was going to do that to others. she said no only you guys. We were seated immediately and given about 5 min before our order was taken. My husband was craving sushi and fish, I was not in the mood for it. He ordered a salmon and albacore sashimi. He really liked it. It came with an ok salad. I ordered edamame to start and Korean bbq as my plate. I did not enjoy the meat at all. It was tough and not flavorful. I would not recommend it. We both started with the miso soup, which was good. We stumbled upon this place, as we were going to try the poke place across the street. There was a charm to Ichiban that drew us in. Never been to Japan, but I'd imagine this is what they'd look like. The staff was warm and welcoming. Our server, Nancy was absolutely adorable. Free parking is available in the structure directly across the street. We ordered a few items and shared all. Seaweed salad - very good, as most are; hard to mess this up. Edamame - same here, it's good, perfectly salted. if you mess up edamame, something wrong witchu, amirite?! Tempura and California roll combo - meh, nothing exciting here. i took a bite of what i assumed was potato and it was eggplant, not that it was bad, but i was expecting the potato. Spicy tuna salad - very flavorful, perfectly spicy and the cucumbers and radishes were cut perfectly thin and were crisp and fresh. Tuna Match roll - Yum! Lotsa tuna and avocado. Unfortunately I have to part ways with this sushi place. Been coming here for over 25 years. Brought my family here to eat and had horrible service. I had to ask for everything to be brought to the table. No, wasabi, no ginger. Once the first round of sushi was done I waited over 15 minutes for someone to come to my table to order more. They kept avoiding our table. Almost left without ordering more food. After we were done eating on my way out the male waiter had the nerve to state that my tip wasn't good enough and that next time they have the right to refuse service. Been wanting to try this restaurant so my husband and I went for lunch yesterday. The service was fantastic. They immediately greeted us and sat us down. Neither one of us had our phones on us, mine is being repaired and the husband's was left in his vehicle. So they gave us menus instead having to use your phone. The husband ordered a vegetable and chicken dish (I think it was called Batanyaki) which came with miso soup which was a delicious, a side salad that was crisp, cold, and layered in a creamy salad dressing - simply yummy! His main dish was very savory, with lots of vegetables, bean sprouts, and the chicken was cooked perfectly and it came with a side of rice too. He liked his meal so much he wants me to find the recipe and try to recreate it. I ordered their Chicken Katsu (cutlet) lunch special, which came with the same yummy miso soup, side salad with the creamy dressing, and a bowl of rice. The cutlet was breaded perfectly, cooked perfectly, and was one of the best chicken katsu cutlets I have had. We both had hot ocha (green tea) with our meal and it was good too. The inside atmosphere is old school but the booths are roomy enough for 4 people and they also have Dynamite sushi (baked type) which we want to try next time we visit. We will definitely be back. Parking is convenient too, as they have a parking structure across the street and parking is available on one side of the restaurant, plus street parking. read more
