This spot looked rather hidden from outside. It seats in a little corner plaza and the windows are rather tinted so its hard to tell how busy is it inside. As you walk in, the staff welcomes you with a "Irasshaimase". They have a few tables and a sushi bar area. The place is cozy. Great to eat with friends, for a date, solo or with family. The menu is extensive! We ended up getting a bento with beef and California rolls and a regular dragon roll. We shared our food so just that was perfect for two. Their green tea was delicious! Even though I had it for dinner, I was still able to sleep really well. I always worry about the caffeine affecting my sleep. Overall, I recommend this spot. Is very authentic, the staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable for the great quality you get of fresh sushi. read more

Terrible service overall me and my friend decided to stay in the corner with our boys upon arrival was quite friendly at first but for some reason ended up with the cold shoulder. Was not accompanied by the waiter each time he would walk up he would service other tables and never asked how we were doing or if we needed a refill etc. There playboy roll tasted like if u were eating a spoonful of mayonnaise wasn't pleasant at all. I had high hopes cuz my friend recommended me but the service could have been a bit more mannerly. read more

Always enjoy going to Kyoto, but especially this location. Our entire family came to celebrate a birthday and it's great that this location has long tables to accommodate around 11 people. The restaurant is clean and well kept. The staff is very friendly and helpful too. It wasn't a busy night when we went , so our orders came out quite quickly. We ordered the Spider Rolls, Yellow tail sushi, calamari, Tonkatsu ramen and bell peppers that are on their appetizer list. Everything we ordered was tasty and fresh. 3 stars and 1/2 . Not sure if this place is Korean or actual Japanese sushi place. They don't have soju and any Korean decors. Most of their rolls are spicy. For the price is ok, this one still better than Jin definitely. Service is ok too. The food doesnt have much rice which is good, Korean sushi mostly have more rice. It doesn't look like the complex have lot of parking space. As a local I just gotta try all the sushi places here in Downey. read more

This is a small place but it has a warm welcoming atmosphere. The service is always good and the staff greet you when you come in and when you are leaving. The fish is always fresh and the portion size of the rolls are great. I usually have to eat two rolls but one did the job. The Alaskan roll was my favorite. read more

This is legit the definition of a hidden gem. Nothing spectacular, just good food at moderate prices. Its still sushi, but average price sushi. One of many K-Sushi(korean owned sushi spots) in Downey. This was one of our to-go spots for takeout during pandemic time. Food has always been pretty good. From the rolls, to sushi, to edamame. Service is always good, we have not had a bad experience with any of the staff. Place is cozy, but has enough tables to not wait forever. Seating is not bad if you avoid Dinner rush. Again, its not Nobu, but its far form being the worst. Not top of the shelf Fish, but usually pretty fresh IMO. read more

My experience with Kyoto Sushi back on the evening of 8/15/20 was surprisingly pleasant. The service was on par. Greeted me as soon as I walked in and explained how to order during the height of COVID-19. A Yelp friend of mine, Franco M., had suggested the "French Kiss roll" ($16.99). A bit pricey, but it's important to me to support our local businesses. The eight-piece French Kiss roll has spicy tuna and eel tempura on the outside, crab mix and fried shrimp on the inside, and eel sauce and spicy mayo for heightened taste. Because my appetite was so low, this is all I ordered. I'd be down for another pickup. It was fresh. Made well. The crew was nice. Free parking in a shared lot of a small strip mall. I have enjoyed sushi from here for well over 10 years now! Yes, prices have soared (where haven't they risen?) but the one thing that remains the same is the freshness of the fish! We are always greeted with exceptional service and the environment is very nice! My favorite rolls: Azteca, Bravo, Fresh Spring, Sara #2, VDR, & Salmon Lover Cucumber salad, assorted tempura are also delicious! This is our best spot for sushi. We have been coming here for over a decade. The large selection of sushi rolls is reason enough to come back to try another. Giving this place a 2.5 stars... this is not the places it used to be. Before this place was IT! Now, it's just a sushi place. After reading the reviews I decided to give it a try since it's less than a 5 min drive. I was extremely disappointed. Ordered the rainbow roll and tuna sashimi; both were flavorless, smelled weird, & didn't taste fresh. I have this habit of smelling the food prior to eating it, and my sense of smell was right. A jewel hidden in Downey. The little restaurant just feels very authentic in Japanese cuisine. There the sushi rolls are really great and fresh. It is made to order and you can even order to go. The service did take its time because of the preparation of the rolls and tempura we ordered. But overall, very quick to take our order and within 20 minutes it was ready. The dodger game was on so expect the dodger games to be live when eating at this establishment. Overall I really recommend this place. Seriously this little place is a HIDDEN GEM. The food was absolutely phenomenal. Presentation and taste was just WOW. It may not be the most luxurious sushi spot but it's the most tasty one I had. Fish tasted SO fresh and it just melted in my mouth. By far the best yellow tail I've ever had and I'm a big sushi girl. The flavors of the rolls were explosive. I couldn't complain and believe me I always complain about food lol. We drove 20 mins and it was all worth it. Definitely, absolutely we will come back. read more

Although the service was good, the sashimi, miso soup, and even just a side of rice was less than mediocre. The salmon/tuna sashimi was tough instead of soft like it should be. The rice tasted like it was sitting outside for 2 weeks. This was during dinner time not during odd hours. Worst yet, the two Korean "sushi chefs" didn't even acknowledge us the whole dinner or even when leaving the restaurant but were bickering about something the whole time. read more

Anytime I try a new place, I always ask for their recommended or signature dish. For this, they recommended the BBQ Short Ribs Bento Box. I agree that this is their best dish. The Galbi short ribs were well marinated, tender, and grilled to perfection! This is definitely high quality and well prepared. I will order this again! Staff was very friendly and gave a lot of attention to all patrons. The lady server was great and was very sweet to my son. I want to come back to try their teriyaki bowl lunch special, only $11! Also, their Japanese style ramen, which is also very affordable. This is my go to spot in Downey.

Sorry if this doesn't site well with regular customers who rated this as a 4 or 5, I have no idea why. I just started working in the Norwalk area and wanted to have sushi on the way home, I choose Kyoto because it was the top of the list and rated a 4, so HOW BAD COULD IT BE (?) terrible. Overpriced rolls $13 average, then Soft Shell Crab that was breaded and deep fried which even smelled of BAD fish, the Yellow tail was not a clear white color but rather Grey, the Azteca Rolls was the only thing that was decent. As for the service, after you get over the getto strip mall, beside the cheif's POOR attitude when you asked for something, his food was the worst. Let me share with you why I think this, I have had Japanese and Korean customers for 30 years and have eatin in some of the best Sushi Bars in Asia and North America, Kyoto's is overpriced and NOT FRESH, $5.50 for Hamachi, $10.00 for Sweet Shrimp, $9.75 for Uni, $10 for Soft Shell Crab and a brown fish they called Albacor, I wish I'd ordered the Snaper, at least that looked fresh. I also wish I had read the review by the guy who said he got very ill from the Uni. I do Not recommend it if you want REAL quality Sushi. Go to Ichiban or Tokyo Garden in the area, a guy at work said Ichiban was a great palce, so next time that's the place for me. read more
