The Best sushi in Downey! No gimmicks . Your not coming here for lights and cheap thrills but for great sushi and that's exactly what you get. The service is just normal but what they miss in service you get I great tasting food. We went there and had the DUI, Popcorn sushi, sunset roll and the Marlo's all great . To start we had some awesome tasting tempura and awesome miso soup. You can go to other flashy places in Downey full and noisy but the sushi is sub par! The 2016 YELP 500, Review #133: SIMPLE REVIEW: Clean place. Small on the outside but, there is plenty of seating inside. I liked how easy this was to find via verbal directions (meaning: it wasn't tucked away and hidden down a back road someplace). Its location is one block from Downey Blvd., which I would call "the strip" in downtown. PARKING: This can be found in multiple locations so, you will not have difficulty finding a spot. First off they have their own parking lot. It is around the side and in the back. Next option is the 1 hr parking in front of the door and along New Street. Lastly, in the heat of the summer you can try finding a spot for your car in the free parking garage across the street. FOOD: The fish was good here. The rice was plentiful but, the sushi was thin and what I would call a small portion size. I would love to return for dinner one day and try different things. My go to sushi spot in Downey. I always order the same thing, miso soup, edamame, stuffed jalapenos, caterpillar roll, DUI roll, and my favorite: spicy salmon hand roll (add avocado). They are very friendly and the food is consistently delicious. For the food I ordered today, I chose a well being roll for health, chef's special sashimi, and the agedashi tofu for an appetizer.The roll made with tofu wrappers and vegetables tasted so healthy and the sashimi fish was very fresh and delicious. Hey John, the owner, Do you not realize that your restaurant menu is available on Grubhub? I mean SOMEONE from your restaurant must have added it so how do you not know this? I read your comment below and you're blaming what had happened to the customer but go look at your prices on Grubhub. Solution for this sort of miscommunication? It's quite simple. 1. You honor the current prices on Grubhub OR 2. If the prices are wrong, YOU CHANGE THE PRICE TO THE CORRECT PRICES SO CUSTOMER DOESN'T GET CONFUSED. Based on the fact that this restaurant is still showing as "unclaimed" on yelp, I think perhaps you guys are struggling with the new technology and maybe that's why you're having a hard time to get the menu changed on Grubhub, but you can't blame the customers for it. Outrageously expensive, $150 for small sashimi plate, so called "special" which was not special at all, price was never disclosed in the menu. $6.50 for green tea - not to mention the density value, the temperature was not even appropriate. Miso soup was lukewarm, nowhere close to a real miso soup you could imagine served in other Japanese cuisines. Went in on a Friday for lunch. I had the vegetable udon and maguro tuna. The udon was piping hot when I got it and that was very appreciated. The tempura was very light and delicious with not a lot of batter so it was perfect. The maguro cut I got was very delicious. The tuna was creamy and the after taste was nice. I'm so disappointed, I've been coming to Ichiban for 15 years, I was a regular until I moved out of Downey and I try to come when I'm in town or have time. The service I just received was subpar to say the worst; my food was burnt, you no longer receive miso soup as a starter, I ordered a crunch roll and there was no shrimp, the table of 6 seated after us received food first and the waitress was less than excited to substitute for me (never an issue before). The quality of food and service has definitely gone downhill. I used to suggest this place to friends, but I definitely won't be doing that anymore. read more

my partner and I came just for the sushi and I was really impressed! the chefs always greet you with such intensity but it's charming. our waitress was really attentive and patient as we perused over the various rolls. we tried five different rolls and all were a hit with one exception. the crunchy roll (not pictured on the menu) was just okay. there was a plainness to it that was lackluster but fortunately, the rest were great! the smoked salmon two piece was really good and tasted pretty fresh. that salmon was my favorite of the night and i can't recommend it enough. both the sunset and dui were packed with flavor and not too heavy. this place is legit. i was a fool in my last review. if you're reading this wondering if you should go, definitely go. and while you're at it step out of your comfort zone and try a weird fish! it's gonna be worth it. read more

The staff completely mistreated their guests this evening. On May 7 at around 9pm, my friend, Z, and his family went here for dinner this evening. Z was only able to tip a few dollars because he realized he was short, but still tipped nonetheless, to which the server replied, "Next time do takeout" with heavy attitude. Z has autism and wasn't able to exactly respond in the best way, so he came out being extremely distraught. Z's sister then went in to have a conversation with the server who then bluntly responded with "Your brother was a problem" and then pushed her. She asked for a manager who then told her that she was too busy to come out and talk to her. This mistreatment is disgusting and just shows how much disrespect the establishment has for its guests, especially those with disabilities. Absolutely disgusting. read more

Horrible services they serve never once ask to refill our drinks and the worse part the serve came to my table and ask to give a high tip. Well I would have loved to give Ichiban 4-5 stars but the service did it for me, so 1 star is all they get. Arrived to the restaurant about 45 minutes before closing, there were several people that arrived after me this probably been due to We were all at the farmers market that was downtown. My group was already there, There was only four of us. I sat down and ordered my food within a few minutes. Food came pretty fast which was great. Then we were told it's last call. No problem. We didn't order anything else. Got the bill it's out there for a minute, then I noticed I never received my mixed temper that I ordered by this time they were closing already. I was done with my food so I let the waitress know about the mishap asked if she could take it off the bill, She said oh no no it's coming up. I still waited 10 minutes for my tempura, right now there's only another couple to the left of us finishing their dinner. She tells them we're closed and they need to pay, they looked stunned. She then came to my table and said you need to pay we are closed. I said ok. She did not hand me my bill at all. I never got to look at it again after I told her about the tempura. I waited about 5min everyone is gone already and I didn't receive my receipt or card. I asked for it she brought it and then I noticed I was charged for a surcharge of a tip? There were 4 of us. They tipped themselves. I thought this was weird. Nothing is posted about surcharges, nothing posted about them tipping themselves. I put a cash tip of $21 on table. I inquired about the charge and nothing. She didn't say anything but told a young gentleman something in Japanese. She said, "we closed" I said well I need my cash back since you tipped yourself. She said, "everything closed" I said you just took my money from the table? You can give it back, nothing much after that but her communicating to the other 2 workers. Well my bill was $73 and they were tipped $23 on card by themselves, and my $21. Was it a $54 tipping experience? Definitely not. I'm sure there's some type of law or something that says restaurants can't tip themselves without authorization or even posting something about doing so. My advise, pay in cash and do not let them leave with your card. read more

Cool little place to grab some sushi next to the Krikorian Theater in Downey. From the outside the place looks smaller than it really is. Once you walk in it's a pleasant sirprise and there's plenty of seating. I love that everyone is very friendly and you get that legit sushi restaurant welcome where all the chefs yell. Service is great here and the staff is very attentive. The food is good but feel the quality of the raw stuff could be a bit better. I ordered Yellowtail and Tuna sashimi and again it was good but there's room for improvement compared to some other places I've been to. I also tried their garlic edamame which was just ok. I'm not a huge fan of rolls but if you are, they do have a good looking selection of rolls available. I did try a piece of the Tiger Roll which featured tempura shrimp and avocado inside and topped with prawns and unagi sauce outside... pretty yummy! Parking is easy with various options surrounding the restaurant. They have a small lot or you can park in the structure across the street. Of course, there's always street parking too. So I think this place is great for rolls and the cooked stuff. The raw stuff has some room for improvement but overall this spot is not bad. I would come back because as I said the quality isn't bad just not up to par with some other spots I've been to. read more

Ichiban is the best place for sushi in Downey, but the teriyaki chicken is not good as elsewhere. Tokyo Garden is pretty much as good but Ichiban is better for a nice date. Tokyo Garden tends to be loud - even crass. On the outside the building is quite ugly. On the inside the lighting is nice and so is the decor. It's not spectacular. Service is great! I usually have philly rolls here and I have loved them every time. Good miso soup. Good iced green tea. Not spectacular, just good. Parking is kind of a problem if you want to park in their lot but you can park in the structure in front of it for free. This place is right by the Krikorian Theatre, so you can make a cool movie a part of your date. One time we had a weird old guy in a wheelchair outside pretty much demand that we get him some teriyaki chicken. Downey gets stranger by the day! read more

Although, The website states they close at 10 not 9. When I arrived I ordered something else and they were nice enough to make it, when I asked for extra eel sauce the waitress made a big deal about how I need to tell them ahead of time bc they couldn't runt my card for a $1.00. This place has such a friendly atmosphere. The servers are very nice and courteous. You get actual service... and not people just doing the bare minimum of asking what you want and bringing it out to you without saying anything. (Ahem... my other sushi review. Hahaha.) Ohmygoodness. I was so hungry I didn't take many pictures. I just stuffed my face. I ordered the shrimp tempura roll and added cream cheese and jalapeños. They didn't skimp on either! Yay! It was really good, and it was a decent price. I, also, had some shrimp tempura. The batter was good and light, and it didn't taste like onion rings! Lol. Two of the people we were with go to this sushi place, like, religiously, so you can understand how much they love this place. My boyfriend, who eats the real sushi (unlike me, who likes stuff cooked), thought this place was just okay. According to him, the sushi isn't as good or tastes as fresh as other places. The game plan was to go try out LA Buns for the 1st time. We parked in the parking structure across the street, in doing so we discovered Ichiban. I'm a huge sushi fan. We came here instead. I don't understand why people give this place a bad review. 2 people said, the sushi falls apart when you pick it up, how about learning how to pick up the sushi. Someone said they hate Korean businesses, sushi is Japanese though.... I on the other hand, had a positive experience at this location and I will come back again. Fast service (that's how it should be when only about 8 tables are being occupied). Fair pricing, 4 rolls and edemame came out to about $44 (above average IMO). And most importantly good sushi, not great, but good. Far better than other sushi establishments I've visited. The edemame is good. Comes out warm and fresh, as it should. The sushi rolls of choice this evening we're the DUI roll, Popcorn roll, power roll, and the firecracker roll. All rolls we're pretty good. Wasabi and soy sauce adds a kick to the sushi. If I go back I would do the firecracker and power rolls again. Those were the winners in my book. The waitress recommended the Firecracker roll, stating that it was on of the most popular rolls. Decent Sushi in Downey, I would have never guessed. This place is a little sketchy from the outside. The neon green and forest green exterior paint just doesn't seem very inviting. Once you get inside and find a seat things start looking up. This location is clean and has cute decor. The sushi bar is staffed with friendly workers and the sushi they served was pretty good. I was not blown away but I was pleasantly surprised. Fresh sliced salmon, tasty unagi and very flavorful spicy tuna. The rolls themselves were fairly big, especially for the price. Hand rolls with out rice were gigantic and I am not sure if they charged more or not. I ate lots of sushi and didn't even break $20. That right there is a good sushi lunch...oh and I had miso soup and and ice tea too. read more
