Had a lunch to go order and they were super knowledgeable on the phone to explain some unique rolls. The lunch special was ready very quick and I didn't have to wait. The Sweetheart roll was very good, shrimp tempura topped with spicy tuna and crunch (not too spicy if you don't like spice). Tuna roll was very good the pieces are a little small but I don't mind because they're easier to eat. Spicy crunch salmon roll was a nice twist on a normal spicy tuna roll, the added crunch was very good. I tried the Salmon Skin roll and it was crispy salmon skin inside the roll with Salmon (super unique, I've never heard of this before). Shrimp avocado was very fresh and again pieces weren't too big. Spicy shrimp crunch roll was very good and the crunch again was a great touch and distinctive. Spicy tuna crunch roll again was very good with the added crunch. The lunch rolls were all a little smaller than traditional rolls but the Specialty roll was larger pieces. Overall great place to try out. It doesn't seem all that from outside but once you walk in, the vibe is completely calm and relaxing with nice mood lighting. We went here and I will say not being from the area made it a little tricky, but once we arrived all was good. This is a nice little restaurant on Rt 46 in Ledgewood. On a Saturday evening, this place was crowded with what looked like lots of takeout orders. I have to admit that I'm a bit of a novice with sushi and Japanese cooking, but I thought the dishes were all tasty. We started off by getting California and Philadelphia rolls for the table. These were very good. The chefs prepare everything fresh in the kitchen right in front of you, which is interesting to watch. For meals, my wife had the steak hibachi, I had chicken tempura, and my stepson had the Mexican roll. I thought mine was ok, but the others really enjoyed what they had. We've been to Ichiban Sushi twice. Fresh tasty edamame and sushi. I really enjoyed the Gentleman's Roll with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, avocado, cucumber wrapped in the green color soy paper. Delicate flavors and beautiful presentation. We tried the vegetable yaki soba and chicken yaki soba this time as well. Both were delicious but could've used a few more veggies. Service is good. It's a busy place, lots of takeout orders so it's not super fast. The booths are the best place to sit. We were at a table and it was a bit chilly there with the door opening up a number of times. I don't get the good reviews. This place is absolutely not authentic, and the sushi is mediocre at best. We also ordered soba which was unlike any soba we've ever had; usually soba noodles are thicker, served cold with a dipping sauce (they were stir fried and warm); I'm not even sure they were buckwheat noodles. The owner and workers are Chinese, not Japanese (I'm Korean myself, and have found that, in general, you'll get a better experience if the workers and owner are familiar with the cuisine in question). read more

Ichiban is great local spot for sushi! The roll special -- $12.95 for three rolls, miso soup, and salad -- is hard to beat. We ordered two take-out lunch specials for a party of 3 and had plenty of food. First time in the area, glad we chose this place for lunch. Beef negamaki appetizer: 6 pieces, scallion wrapped in each sliced beef. Smaller pieces than expected, it was okay, we would pass on this next time. Sashimi lunch: Smaller pieces than expected but the quality was definitely fresh. The fish were actually cold which is so important in my opinion with sashimi. So many places serve sashimi room temperature or warm, it's gross. But you can taste the freshness, cold, sweet pieces of fish. They make the rolls the right way - not overloading with rice. The fish is so fresh it makes a difference in the rolls! We never noticed a difference in all the salmon avocado rolls we've ever had but their rolls are the perfect size and you can actually taste the fish in them! Other: Presentation is simple and pretty (plating for sashimi). I always believe presentation counts! They have roasted (?) green tea. Miso soup was not overly salty which is good. Great hole in the wall sushi spot! After a quick search via google we found Ichiban. We stopped by this one the other night for dinner and I left pleasantly surprised. I must say that the dinner hour was super mellow for a Tuesday night around 5:30/6pm. My buddy and I were the only ones in so service was prompt and our waitress was attentive. I ended up going for the sushi & sashimi combination ~ 5 pieces of sushi, 12 pieces of sashimi, and a california roll. California roll was my least favorite of the meal, but I'll say the sushi and sashimi were excellent. Freshness and quality were all there. Would highly recommend the sushi or sashimi options here. Stopped by this little Japanese place on our way to Pennsylvania. Upon first glance, it looks like a hole in the wall. However, upon entering, it looks like your typical cozy Japanese place. I don't know if I just have higher standards than my friends but I really wasn't amazed by the food, especially the sushi. I paid around $12 for my dragon roll, and me, being a small eater, was still hungry after eating it. Mind you, I also had the chicken yakitori before and hadn't eaten that entire afternoon. I will say the taste for the dragon roll wasn't bad, but I was pretty surprised at the tiny sizes for each roll. Having eaten dragon rolls at multiple locations in NYC, I was very underwhelmed. My boyfriend got the shrimp tempura roll (there's a different name on the menu which I can't recall now) which was pretty sizable but also cost $14. My other friend ordered sushi from the regular menu, and you might get the most for your money ordering from that menu, even though the selection is smaller. My friend who had the hibachi enjoyed his meal but my other friend who ordered the udon does not recommend it to others. Overall, for the price, I would say I was pretty underwhelmed. The sushi made me sick. It tasted questionable but due to hunger I went against my better judgement and consumed the spoiled rubbish.
