This review is only relevant to bridal hair - I haven't come here for any other services, so I can't speak to that. But, if you're looking for a place to get your hair done for your wedding day, along with your bridal party, this is the place!! I booked myself and my four bridesmaids in to get our hair done for my wedding day. Christina was very helpful with the booking process and recommending the amount of time we would need to get ready. I had my hair trial about a month and a half before the wedding when I was in town, and I was so impressed with my stylist. My hair was perfect on the first try, and she was able to bring my vision to life while tailoring it to my features. I was a bit nervous on the big day that everything would go smoothly and we would be on time. I had nothing to worry about. We were finished around 20 minutes earlier than Christina estimated. Our stylists were super personable, kind and fun. We decided to get our hair done at the salon, and you get mimosas and snacks, which was a really nice touch. Most importantly, everyone loved their hair!! I was so pleased that everyone loved it. Pictures looked awesome. Thank you Icon for making my hair look so perfect for my wedding day! read more

I get a good haircut here with Riley, and I do keep coming back. I do think it's worth mentioning that the last couple of times I've had a haircut booked, they call me and move it within about an hour of the appointment. There is no reason given, and although I understand things happen and come up, it doesn't reflect well on the business if I can't rely on them to consistently make their appointments. Not to mention their own cancellation policy requires 24 hours in advance. Although I intend to return to get my haircut this time, I'm not sure that I will continue to come back if appointments keep getting moved like this. read more

Very friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere. The whole space feels very high end without being snobby. I had a great haircut from Sade (whom I followed to this new salon) and the care she gives to every cut is just amazing. I have been coming here for years and yes the price is usually a bit higher then I normally care to spend when getting my hair done but I always leave happy, so to me it's worth it. Today was a completely different story, I had the worst experience from my stylist Drew. I left crying and embarrassed of my hair. What I asked for vs what was delivered was completely different! Yes, before hand we talked about not being able to deliver exactly to the picture but she gave me something completely different then what was asked! Saw the lovely Shay almost two weeks ago for the best damn set of nails I've ever had done. I hadn't done a full set of nails in many years. Mainly because I have just had my own manicured and painted the last few years. However, I had nails done for twelve years so you know just how much I've used this type of service. I know quality nails over the quantity of nail techs and aestheticians out there. Shay is incredible with her hand painted designs and flair for her art. I've been scared to recommend her in case it makes it incredibly hard to get into her next time. Lol But every great artist deserves praise and kudos where it is deserved. While I have not been to Icon Hair Group for any hair related appointment, I have been twice now for pedicures. The salon is big and chic. The staff are extremely friendly and accommodating, they really make you feel welcome from the minute you walk in. . Unlike most 'spas', there's no big row of pedi-chairs where you are lined up with 6 other women: All of whom are getting their feet groomed in a row. Instead, they have a private room where you recline on a massage/estheticians chair where you can completely relax and enjoy the experience. The 90 minute pedi is like heaven! A whole lower leg and foot massage that has you at the brink of relaxation and beyond. I dare say, if you live in stilettos like I do, this is a must have! So ladies, do yourselves and your precious tootsies a treat and book in. For all the stress and pressure we put on our feet, they deserve 90 minutes of pampering. My final note is on the washroom. If you know my reviews, you know I judge very harshly on the loo. Well, it is fabulous. A true treasure mostly in part because they have the luxurious and heavenly Principessa products. I adore when an establishment has high quality soaps and lotions in the restroom area. It is a sign of respect for its customers. I walked past this place for so many years, before finally deciding to give it a try. The reason it attracted me so much was because they always have interesting displays in the window of either cool art or some sort of play on the conventional. It seemed like this place was rather edgy, since I used to see girls who worked here with bright green mohawks. This edge, along with the fact that it's in a nice building like Commerce Place, made Icon Architexture really appeal to me. I made an appointment with a random stylist. She was pretty cool and nice with a punk style. She brought me to the back to a room with a bunch of sinks to wash my hair. I was surprised how big this salon was, because it seems rather small from the outside. She cut my hair pretty fast, and I think it cost me $40, give or take. I went home, and I realized that one side of my hair was longer than the other. It looked terrible, so I went back. She fixed it, and it did look okay, but my haircut wasn't edgy at all. The waxing was great - the customer service less so. My technician was not interested in any sort of chit chat - which was a shame as we were coming back two days later with an entire bridal party..... which is where they really dropped the ball. They bumped one of the bridal party girls makeup times to do a grads makeup, causing a delay of over 30 minutes, so photos were late and rushed, no apology or discount given - nothing packaged up for touch ups, and some of the girls had to re-do their makeup to fix inconsistencies and uneven-ness as that particular makeup artist was rushing them through to get to the grad girl. I come here once a month for brow tint/wax and a gel manicure from Amelia. It's been close to a year now and I wouldn't go anywhere else. The staff is super friendly, it's a clean environment, and they don't mess up my face or nails. As well as this, the prices for a gel manicure are very cheap compared to other places in the city that normally charge $75 a set. She does my nails so well that I can go 6 weeks or longer without breakage - I posted a picture below of my nails after 6 weeks grow out, still completely intact. For my eyebrows, I find the tint and wax lasts about 5 weeks, and by that time my brows need to be done again because they grow fairly quickly. She does this in a private room, which is a nice change from sitting at some mall outlet or something where other people walk around you checking on different products and there are 10+ people in line behind you waiting on a brow wax. You're not rushed, and she takes her time to shape perfect brows. My eyebrows are my life, I love them and I always end up with perfect brows here. read more

Delighted once again, so much that I feel the need to leave a brand new review. This time I received an hour-long pedicure. Icon meets my exacting standards for hygiene and quality, and the aesthetician is awesome! There is no chair pedicure to be had here, so if you want something cheap and quick, you'd best go elsewhere. When I arrived, I was situated on a comfy table and given a cup of tea. My treatment began with a metal tub soak (with a liner for safety), then moved into extensive clipping, trimming, and filing--it's my first of the year, after all! Once my nails were perfect, I received an excellent foot massage, followed by several coats of robin's egg blue polish. With tip, my total came to ~$80, but it was totally worth it. read more

Margie has been cutting my hair for years. This is her second stint at ICON and it's the best place she's worked at outside of her own salon. It's clean, recently updated interior (and a new pedicure station), great staff and a decent price. Plus they were the first salon in the city to add an environmental charge for properly dealing with the chemicals they use to colour and clean. The lady was a great conversationalist. It has been over a week, and I only have one small chip. I starting looking into getting a cut at Icon because of the 15% student discount. It got a few meh reviews, but I figured I could at least take a look at the website. It turns out that 1) Icon has new owners, who reopened in fall 2010, and 2) one of them is a stylist I used to love at Shanti. First, if you're looking for a good deal on a cut (even with the student discount), Icon is probably not the place for you. It's a fancy salon, complete with fancy salon prices (although still not that bad), and apparently it's a popular place for the concierge at the Hotel Mac to refer clients to. That being said, I've been to some salons where it was pretty obvious they didn't think I belonged there. You won't see that here. The staff were probably more casual with me than with super fancy clients, but they were still very friendly and I received the same quality of service. I'm also super happy to have found Christina again. She just gets what I want... some stylists have a hard time really understanding that I am going to spend 30 seconds or less on my hair most mornings, and I end up with a cut that actually takes work. Every time I've seen her, I've been very happy with my cut, and I can even manage getting it to look good on my own. I also got a lesson in improving my drugstore box dye-jobs at home, much appreciated since I can't afford to get my hair coloured in salons. I won't be back here too soon, but when I've saved up for another nice haircut, this is where I'll be. read more

Like some of the reviews mention, this isn't the place to go if you're on a budget. As a guy, I'm not used to paying over $50 for a cut, but that's what it ended up being here. The student price, as it clearly states above (but which I somehow missed), is only available on Wednesday. New customers get a $10 gift certificate. Price aside, my stylist was pleasant and gave me what I was looking for. The haircut included a nice head massage, which almost lulled me into sleep. I walked in with doubts and I walked out with satisfaction. I recently moved to Edmonton from Montreal and had no clue where to get my hair cut. But now I have found the perfect place. I fixed an appointment and was greeted warmly at the reception. I had Christy as my stylist. Chrsity is wonderful. She patiently heard me out and then explained what would suit me the best. And boy did I get exactly what I was looking for. After the consultation I had my hair washed at a comfortable washing station. Later the hair cut was a breeze.That's not too common since I have pretty thick stubborn hair. In short I would recommend Icon to anyone trying to decide where to go for a Hair cut. Give it a try. A little pricey. Maybe. But you wont leave unsatisfied. I was in need of a haircut and since I am not very picky I stopped in here as I was passing by. The salon is much bigger than it appears and it is really nice on the inside, a bit of a modern look and nothing over the top. I got a basic cut, nothing crazy and they did a good job but the reason I liked this place was the staff. I found everyone to be extremely friendly, very outgoing and fun. The stylist cutting my hair was great to talk to, it seemed like we had known each other forever. I was lucky enough that I could just walk right in but other times I have walked by this salon it's been really busy so you might want to make an appointment. It's a fun experience. read more

I had an appointment today to have my hair and makeup done. It's my birthday. I had a previous appointment up the street prior and it was running later than expected. I called ahead and let them know how late I was going to be and was told it was all good. When I got there it was a different story, the girls were so rude to me I left in tears. I ended up leaving completely deflated without any of my booked services and am completely flabbergasted at the lack of empathy by the staff to try and accommodate. I will not be back. read more

I'd never done any kind of waxing before, but decided to go to Icon because I was curious and they had good reviews. I found the front desk staff a bit distant - they let me wander around for 10 minutes after the time my appointment was supposed to start before finally telling me the aesthetician was running a little late. That said, Amelia was lovely, and made a rather painful and uncomfortable experience actually fairly pleasant. She's good at making small talk and distracting you from the fact that waxing is actually as painful as people say it is and seemed genuinely interested our conversation. When I left, the receptionist apologized for the lateness and gave me a $10 gift certificate. While I probably won't be back for any more waxing anytime soon (holy **** it hurts), I definitely plan on going back for one of their other spa services sometime soon. read more

I have walked by the salon everyday for years to and from work and have always wanted to try it. I was thinking about it and when I got to my desk, there was a Groupon for it! Pricing is a little higher but then I can understand based on the location of the salon. Called to book an appointment and they were super friendly and willing to accommodate me that same day even though the Groupon said I couldn't redeem for 2 days. They were also aware of the Alberta law of no coupon expiring which is a breath of fresh air as most vendors don't know that. The salon was bigger than I had thought it would be. Demi gave me a head massage beforehand and it felt great! Everyone was professional and nice. She listened to what I was looking for (I have fine hair but a LOT of hair) and accommodated that. Demi even taught me what I could do to give my hair some lift! :) Overall, the service was pleasant and I didn't feel rushed. Got good compliments on my haircut. Of course, the true style will show itself in a couple of weeks as it grows out but currently, it feels nice to have a great cut and a lighter head of hair! :) read more

I booked an appointment for myself and 5 of my bridesmaids to get our hair and/or makeup done the day of my wedding. We walked in and were greeted by the friendly staff, who not only offered us mimosas and other beverages, but a platter of fruit and pastries. Talk about service! It made the morning feel extra special. Everyone was delighted with their hair and makeup, and my bridal hair (40s style wave) was done on time and stayed in the whole day. I only gave this salon a single star so I would be able to write a review and that is fair more than this salon deserves. Went in for a hair trim as I have been growing my hair out from a previous bad cut. When I take my glasses off I am at the mercy of the stylist. Once I got home and was able to have a good look at what Sarah had done to my hair, I was absolutely livid. When Given I work in Commerce Place where this salon is, and what they charge for a trim ($80.00) one would think you would think you were seeing a senior stylist. She cut off at least 1 1/2 inches of hair, uneven and shorter by a good 3/4 of an inch on one side, left the rest in such a choppy mess, I question where or not she really is a "licensed" stylist. Highway Robbery. I was charged $500.00 for this haircut and color. I was booked in and asked for an Ombre/Balayage and provided the below picture for reference. I was subsequently double charged for the color service due to how long my hair was... Is an inch and a half below the collar bone extremely long hair? There were also additional charges tacked on for toner, olaplex, as well as the haircut. What I was given was a full head of solid color streaks. I emailed the salon about my concerns and asked to have my email forwarded to the manager. I was told they would get in touch with me in 2-3 business days. After this time period had elapsed I contacted the salon again inquiring if I might receive a response, only then did Christina, whom I presume to be the owner, reply. Christina indicated that the stylist said that 'she would not be able to get the color that blonde, and that it would take multiple sessions.' An attempt at gaslighting in my opinion as the stylist was speaking about the level of lift she would be able to achieve with the bleach, not the fact that she applied streaks to my hair and left uniform sections from the top to the bottom untreated, thus completely negating any ombre/balayage effect. We also decided to have everything done in one session, IE bleaching and toning - again the only concern being the level of lift/brassiness, not the actual gradation effect desired. However Christina stated that because I was unhappy with the results of my color I could come in and have the highlights 'melted down' so that they do not run to the top of my head. She made no mention about the excess surcharges applied to my bill. I replied that that was an unacceptable solution, as my primary color is virgin hair, and I had no intention of dying over or darkening it, so I would not expect the same to be done in order to fix a color job. I indicated that another session of bleaching and toning should be the required fix, this time to secure the primary bleach color at the bottom of my hair and achieve the gradation that ombre/balayage is known for. I also indicated that if this was not acceptable a refund between the difference in charges for highlights vrs ombre could be extended. I believe her reasoning for not extending this proper corrective service is due to a higher charge for the materials/labor needed as simply dying my roots would be quite a bit cheaper rather than providing the service for which I actually paid for, in an excess amount no less. A further two business days has since transpired with no word back. Obviously it is not a priority for the owner/management to fix issues properly and professionally. Despite the salons attempts at gaslighting the situation, the attached pictures and price speaks for themselves. read more

I got a great deal on a facial with a neck/shoulders massage with Groupon and I decide to get a try. First impression was good, even if the staff look very young (for me, very young means not so much experience...) I get impress by the size inside the salon and also seem very edgy, modern and clean place and that's something who attract me a lot. The staff are also friendly and finally very professional. The facial treatment was very gentle and smooth. Although I wish the massage on my neck and shoulders were a little more deep but at the end I was more then happy with the final feeling ..... cuz I feel soooo relaxed :) I am going to back again for sure, maybe for a coloring or a full body massage ! read more

Ok, so I gave Icon another try. I was walking through Commerce Place when I passed a mirror and remembered I was desperately in need of a haircut. I decided to give them a try again - and I'm glad I did. A woman named Jayme cut my hair and I honestly haven't had such a hip, modern cut in long time. This time the service was exceptional, and I have to say that the salon has improved by leaps and bounds. I learned it's under new management. The studio has adopted a more boutique-style environment, with artwork on the walls and they even have a tattoo studio attached. The place was quiet, as it was in the middle of the afternoon during the week, but I wouldn't be surprised if weekends are packed. I was really impressed with Jayme's friendly service and she even gave me tips for styling my hair, without pushing product on me - a pet peeve of mine at salons. I will definitely go back for a haircut, and may even try a colour there next time. Keep up the good work, Icon. read more

I do not normally do this, but I am so mad about the cut I got at this salon, I feel it needs to be made public. It is not the worst cut I have ever had, but definitely bottom 3, and one of the most expensive. It's funny because I looked so much better when I entered the salon than when I left, and I think both the stylist and the lady at the front knew because they seemed apologetic. The hairdresser thinned it out in places that are already thin, and did not thin or cut the places that really needed it. The result is that I have a rather uneven, shapeless cut on top, and long stringy hair in the back with uneven ends, and it looks nothing like an actual hairstyle. I will definitely need to get it cut at least 3 inches shorter than what I wanted just to fix the mess that she made. This haircut made me mad enough to cry when I got home. I would never recommend this salon to anyone. I think it's all about image, not quality, and very overpriced. read more

Received a free haircut as a Christmas gift from Icon, had Christina cut my hair, and I was sold. I have very delicate hair, and am very selective on who cuts it... after this meet, she has become my favorite stylist. SHe is gentle, she listens to what you want, and she has great advice. She also does not push products like other salons, which i appreciate. They are always very accomodating too, if I need something done on short notice. Having just moved back from Toronto I was looking for a really good stylist, I essentially stumbled into Icon a couple of months ago. I felt comfortable from the moment I walked in, being greeted by one of the new owners. She was genuine and friendly, no "attitude" that one gets at so many upper end salons these days. I was ushered in to meet a stylist who was available whose name was Demi. I was offerred a smock, was seated for scalp massage, then a wash,was then given a very precise cut, which still looked great a month later, then had my hair washed again without having to ask -I always have to ask for this at other shops. Again a scalp massage. I am so impressed with this salon and the young stylist. At $35 this is amazing value. I paid twice that in Toronto. Truly one of the best experiences and results I have had. They've made me a client not a customer. UPDATE: So it's Almost 7 years I've been going to Icon. Some things have changed. Some haven't. My stylist is now the absolutely talented Christy O, prices still reasonable, the shop received a renovation and service is still great. I really like the no-charge clean-up cut a few weeks after the cut. Give them a try. read more

Christy! Christy! Christy! Funny, enthusiastic, respectful are all traits that describe Christy O'Quinn. She is phenomenal and it shows by how much pride she takes in her profession. If I had it my way, 140 characters would not even be enough to describe how great she truly is. When you have a bad hair day, Christy is the one that will make it better. When another hairstylist from another salon fails at cutting your hair correctly, go to her and she will make your first but not the last visit memorable. Yay! I got my grad hair and makeup done here and i LOVED my hair dresser, although I'm not sure what her name is.. all i remember is she had short reddish hair. She was kind.. talkative and very attentive. My hair turned out amazing. My makeup artist was also amazing, she was very kind and gentle. Although I wasn't a huge fan of my eyebrows, i was able to fix them myself and rock the rest of the look all day. Thank you ladies for making me feel Grad Ready!
