This is a great spot if you're looking for authentic Filipino food. I came here with a group of friends, and we got the Kamayan platter for six. Some of them hadn't had Filipino food before, so this was a great way to show them a variety of options. - The lechon was juicy, crispy, and tender. - The bangus was fried perfectly. - The kare-kare was flavorful. - The sinigang was amazing. All the flavors were very authentic. The servers are extremely friendly and super funny, and the vibe inside is just super comfortable and feels like I'm at home. This is probably the best Filipino BBQ in the area. We've always preferred the pork over the chicken. We arrived on a very busy Saturday afternoon. And surprisingly, seated quickly. It was our lucky day. The servings encourage family style. Which is great when you have a big group you can try various dishes. We ordered the crispy pata. A dish we dont make at home are come across very often. It was perfectly crispy down to the bone. There was great flavor to the skin. And the meat still remained juicy and tender. The pork BBQ sticks. Slamming. Period. It was my aunts birthday so we got pancit noodles to symbolize long life. It was surprisingly really flavorful. For drinks we had calamansi juice hot and cold. Doesn't taste like it was from an old bottle. Really refreshing and soothing. My daughter loves the melon juice. It was one of my regular haunts back in the late 1990's and early 2000's because of the inexpensive but filling meals. Since then, I have found myself generally preferring cleaner and lighter cuisine like Japanese and Vietnamese. I'm also a huge seafood guy, so all the pork did not appeal to me as often, especially since much of it is fried. With that said, every once in a while, the craving strikes. Anyway, over the decades, I now have specific Filipino dishes I prefer at various restaurants around NYC. However, nobody does a better Pork Barbecue than Ihawan, and that's what I came for a few nights ago with two friends. Yum! Every bite brings back the nostalgia of wonderful memories. I'm also a fan of their Pancit Palabok, which has smooth rice noodles in a delicious shrimp sauce, though what happened to the pieces of chicharron that use to adorn this dish? Please add them back. As for the rest of the meal, the Chicken BBQ and Sizzling Sisig were both decent, but the Daing Na Bangus was slightly over fried and somewhat dry. I stead of the Milkfish, we should have ordered the Crispy Pata. You really can't go wrong with that. These are all items that I do prefer elsewhere, but it wasn't a bad way to round out our meal. Once again, maybe the memory of this place for me is even better than the actual food. Most of which is not bad, but nothing really special. 3.5 stars overall. Service was good as the wait staff was entertaining and attentive. It was hard to not round up to 4 stars (especially because they played a birthday song for me and provided a whole flan to celebrate). But there was some misses with the food and the pricing of some food items threw us off a bit. It seems some meals are prepared on order by weight/volume so you're charged by quantity, pieces, or volume. That was similar to a market price model or "per pound" but not described in the menu. I didn't expect that for my Kare Kare dish in particular. (Unlike a seafood dish where the fish had to be weighed first or it being seasonal). As the waiter explained, it varies on the # of oxtails given. We ordered the lumpia which we enjoyed, the egg with eggplant and pork, and grilled eggplant (which was also charged per piece). Those are recommended. For entrees however, it was a hit or miss for my party of 4. The grilled pork chops was suggested by our waiter which is their most popular grill item. It was paired with white rice (no substitutions allowed for garlic rice but you can swap it for an additional cost). My friends both ordered the Filipino style noodles with chicken and shrimp in one and the other was a stir fry yellow noodle. It was bland and underwhelming. We ordered the crispy pig to share for the table which was inconsistent. Per other Yelp reviews, they are known for their pork but it didn't happen for us today. It was totally dry in most parts and the meat was hard to get to, not easily off the bone at all. And the crispy texture was there but dare I say too crispy where it was not enjoyable. My Kare Kare dish had about 4 oxtail pieces of medium size. Some eggplant, bok choy greens, and string beans. The sauce had only a hint of peanut butter for me. I would've preferred more. It was good but not memorable. It needed just a little more thickness to it. The flan that was served for dessert was very good! I enjoyed that a lot! Shoutout to the staff because we had a large party (nearly 30 people) and they were all so kind and patient with their hospitality. This spot is known for their Kamayan style dinner and one of the best priced options I could find for a large group. My partner is Filipino as well as many of his friends and we organized a large group dinner here to celebrate his birthday and the process was pretty easy. They have different priced platters that you can choose between. The food was quite delicious and there was a nice beautiful variety and spread that everyone really enjoyed. The one downside we had was that it was not in the traditional style we had expected. Typically, the way it is set up, is that the bamboo leaves would cover the table all the way with all the food laid out. You can think of it as a long rectangular table with food that you can just grab. However, since the pandemic, they had to change certain procedures including the kamayan setup. Now the kamayan comes in separate platters. I was a bit disappointed at the change, but the food was still beautiful and delicious. I think that what we were missing was a way to connect all the tables together so that everyone could face each other and talk to everyone instead of being separated. Quantity is right . We had 2 dishes on the side as add-on, the sinigang soup and the lechon sisig. The combination is just perfect . We came in busy Sunday afternoon so I called in 15 minutes arrival to make sure of a reserved table, they don't recommend but what's the harm if calling in. Want good filipino BBQ? Come here. Beyond that... not sure I'd recommend it. Sure I'm comparing it to my family's homemade cooking as a baseline, but here are my biggest complaints. Garlic rice? Portion was reasonable but rice was overcooked and the rice not nearly garlic-y enough. Palabok? No. Bland, not saucy, etc. (Jollibee Palabok is better ). Ihawan's saving grace was their BBQ. Portion considering cost was reasonable. Taste though was pretty darn good. Grabbed a BBQ rice plate to go for a friend it was that good. Quick tip. Order a side of longanisa if you're here. They grill it and the burnt ends of the sweet little sausages were the chef's kiss. If you're thinking about visiting this place... look for a small sign on the side of a building and walk upstairs. First time coming hear I almost thought it didn't exist or I had the wrong address. But for a Restaurant in this part of queens it was very spacious. I am very disappointed and sad to write this updated review on my favorite Filipino restaurant but my recent visit has me wondering if I will ever return again. For starters, their most recent health grade is a C, which is shocking since they've always maintained an A, and if they had a grade pending and given time to fix the issues, they usually redeem themselves. However, a deeper dive into their past inspections and the violations they accrued are very concerning. I don't know why we bothered to continue to eat here after seeing that C health grade. I guess I was hoping it was some sort of fluke... but it's not. The following violations were reported for Ihawan as of Feb 2024: 1) Food, supplies, or equipment not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display, service or from customer's refillable, reusable container. Condiments not in single-service containers or dispensed directly by the vendor. 2) Live roaches in facility's food or non-food area. 3) Anti-siphonage or back-flow prevention device not provided where required; equipment or floor not properly drained; sewage disposal system in disrepair or not functioning properly. Condensation or liquid waste improperly disposed of. 4) Establishment is not free of harborage or conditions conducive to rodents, insects or other pests. Onto the food, it was disappointing and not the same quality at all. The lumpiang shanghai tasted different and are smaller in size. They're usually short and fat, but my visit yielded short and skinny with less filling. The pork was either old or something was off, but it didn't taste the way it used to. Their adobong manok (chicken adobo) was over cooked to the point that the bones had broken apart which made it difficult to eat. My husband kept getting fragmented pieces of bone and abandoned the dish altogether. Their famous barbecue sticks were tough, and my husband had a difficult time even cutting the meat off of the stick with a knife.The meat should slide right off the stick when you bite it off. The goto soup was also incredibly disappointing. The flavor was off, and had an overpowering citrus flavor that is supposed to be subtle in this dish. I abandoned eating this dish too. The only dish to go unchanged was the sizzling sisig. The flavors were the same, and I overall had no issues with it. With regards to the dining area, there are flies everywhere which will bother you during your meal. The Halo-Halo tastes the same. But that's about it. Overall, a major disappointment, my husband and I had upset stomachs following our meal here. Nothing major thank god, considering I was pregnant during my visit here. Servers wipe down the glass table tops with windex instead of a sanitizing liquid and that's problematic. Please clean your tables with disinfectant not just glass cleaner. I don't know what's going on, but as a very long time and loyal customer to this establishment, my visit in July 2024 was abysmal and I don't recommend others to come here anymore. read more

The Kamayan is such a steal. There's a lot of food and it comes out to less than $20 per person before tax and tip if you follow the amount of people for each Kamayan. Lechon was super cripsy but also had a lot of fat. Loved the savory peanut sauce from the kare kare. The meat was so tender. Such a great pairing with the rice. Daing bangus was unexpectedly good but on the drier side. The vinegar vegetable mix on the side paired well with in. Tocino and bbq chicken were tasty. Eggplant was just roasted eggplant. Could've used more salt or some type of seasoning. The soup was interesting. I've never had a tamarind based soup. It wasn't bad, but I'm not a big fan of sour soups. Lots of pork and vegetables in it. They do go heavy on the rice, so expect to have a lot of it left over. We got lumpia on the side too. I don't think it was necessary since we were so stuffed from everything else, but it was good. We shared one halo halo for dessert. Party is at 4pm but I had to pick up the food by 3pm. Transport was an issue. Would the crunchiness hold up? The staff confidently assured me the crunch would hold and they were absolutely right. Both dishes arrived crisp and flavorful. This was my guests' first experience with Filipino cuisine and they were thoroughly impressed also with the Kare Kare, pancit bihon, lumpiang sariwa. I've been to this place several times with various groups and I guess I forgot to write a review. The most recent time I was there, the lighting was a bit less dim and the food was the same quality and in one dish a lot better. Compared to other spots, they specialize more in inihaw or grilled and roasted meats and a lot of their dishes contain pork which makes sense as well it's a Filipino spot. I would say there's better spots for instance for sisig or for stews but their versions are still solid. This review is from July as per many of my other recent reviews. The best dishes that day was the Crispy Pata which is listed as a deep fried pork knuckle and at seasonal price. In this case it was $20 and it was the best version I've had. Perfectly crispy but not too much so with a good mix of fat and meat. Add the spicy vinegar and go to town. I do remember having it there and it being good other times but this version was outstanding. Also crispy and porky is the Lechon Kawali or deep fried crispy pork belly with liver sauce on the side for $12. Their version is fine though this is not my favorite Filipino dish. Most of my groups order it and the version here has a nice crispy outside but I prefer other variants. I prefer Tito Rad's for this for instance. Second best was probably the Inihaw Na Tocino or simply Tocino or grilled cured pork for $11 also available with an egg for an extra dollar (to make it more silog style.) It was sweet but not overly sweet and the meat was well seasoned with not too much of a chew. I have had previous pretty good experience with their normal BBQ skewers though I do remember one of them being a bit dry one time. Also solid was the Menudo with stewed cubed pork, liver, potatoes, bell peppers, and raisins in a a tomato based sauce for $11 also. There's definitely a unique flavor from the liver and I like offal but it's just a little bit of a note for those who don't like organ meat with a tasty well flavored tomato sauce. If you're going to get a stew and you don't mind offal, I'd recommend that one. Their Laing or taro leaves and shrimp sauteed in coconut milk for $11 was also solid. I have preferred some other spots again as it's not stewed as well and I prefer the slightly stronger coconut and shrimp paste flavor from other places but still good. Last but not least is the Sizzling Sisig with pork ears and mouth marinated with lemon, soy sauce, and hot chili peppers on a hot skillet for $14 or $15 with an egg and well you definitely should get an egg and I kind of don't see why you can order it without it because it's pretty intrinsic to thi dish. The sisig here is good but there's better. It's not as spicy as some other spots and I find the mix of meats to have a better texture at some other spots (especially Mama Fina's which probably has the best version even if it is a but pricey.) Most of it was either too salty or the flavor was lacking. I was quite disappointed by this place but luckily the entire meal wasn't too expensive. It was pretty standard at an affordable price. - Sizzling Sisig: This was a bit on the salty side. My aunt ordered ham and rellenong bangus last Christmas and to both of our disappointment, the ham was bland and seasoning didn't reach the very inner core. We feel that it was done in a rush. But the rellenong bangus was worst because it has lots of bones that we almost got choked on it. The taste is really bad like a muddy catfish and we have to throw it to the garbage. My friend and I tried Ihawan. I thought he had suggested it, but he reminded me I had done so. The place is listed on many lists of "best of" Filipino food. They had multiple sizable parties, enjoying themselves. That is a good sign. The space is suited for that: bright, airy, festive, not fancy. The name means, according to Google translate, BBQ in Tagalog. That means they are rather literal minded. We tried the pork in pork blood. We wanted the beef tripe, but we had to settle for another beef option. We also had the palabok, the rice noodles. We consumed just about every morsel, which is the best testament possible to quality (and they did not skimp on quantity). I offer three notes. First, the door is to the right of what looks to be the business. On the street level is the take out operation. You have to go through a door, then up stairs. So if you show up, as I did, and wonder, gee, did we make a mistake and there is no option for dine in, just amble over ten feet. Second, and this is just to remark upon how hard working people are: it is a walk up from the kitchen with apparently no dumbwaiter. We watched the same guy come up with a loaded tray. I admire and applaud him and everyone else. This is a small business that is hustling. These folks are getting their exercise. Third, what they lack is a liquor license. I was very excited about this spot because of the kamayan option, which I enjoyed with my family. It's a fairly spacious restaurant, located on the 2nd floor of the building. It was very busy and lively and filled up fairly quickly. The staff is very friendly and helpful and walked us through the menu. We ended up doing the kamayan for 8 along with an order of the kamayan for 4 and an order for 2. It was more than enough for our party of 14. We also grabbed a birthday pancit that was more than enough for 2-4 people. Although they don't have alcohol, they have a decent drinks menu and we enjoyed the calamansi drink and the coconut water. The food was delicious and the portions were very generous, especially for the kamayan. What I especially love about this spot is that they have delicious chicken options for the kamayan as some members of our party don't eat pork. Everyone in our party enjoyed the food and the presentation. Overall, it was a great dinner and we all enjoyed the experience thoroughly! Came as part of my 30 city 26 day food road trip. Enjoyable experience with a friendly staff. Ordered the Sizzling sisig (grilled pork ears, mouth, and belly w/ sautéed onions and peppers in hot skillet with garlic fried rice). It was aggressively spiced which I loved. Heavily minced served in a skillet. The pork ear I believe gave it a slightly gelatinous mouthfeel similar to okra around the meat. Otherwise it was very good. read more

Cozy restaurant serving amazing Filipino food. Parking is a little tricky since it's on a busy street but it's not a deal breaker. Service was great, staff is very kind, and food came out pretty quick. We ordered: * Ihawan Sampler, $1 sub garlic rice ($17.00) * Beef Tapa, with egg, $1 sub garlic rice ($16.00) * Sizzling lhawan Sampler, $1 sub garlic rice ($17.50) * Melon Drink ($4.50) total came out to $59.88. Everything here was delicious, but I would highly recommend avoid getting the garlic rice because it was very disappointing. It was bland and didn't taste like garlic. You have to order the Ihawan Sampler, you get to try a little bit of everything and it's fried to perfection. Their calamari was well seasoned and it had an airy batter to it. Beef tapa was delicious with the eggs and the sauce. And the sizzling sisig was savory, sour, and spicy, it was great. I also love how the melon drink has actual cantaloupe inside the cup, it was very refreshing. Overall we had a great experience and we cannot wait to come back to try their Kamayan menu. read more

Fun eating experience with a variety of entrees in the preset platters- priced well too at around $45 (slightly more for garlic fried rice substitution). Lumpias were nice and fresh, although the filling texture was a bit softer than expected. Grilled eggplant was done well, and the shrimp sauce complemented it perfectly. Grilled chicken had great char and flavor as well. Fish was slightly overcooked unfortunately- vinegary sauce helped a little bit though. Vegetable dishes were just ok. Vermicelli was cooked a good amount of ingredients, much better than the garlic fried rice that wasn't as aromatic as it looked. Restaurant is located in the 2nd floor so you just walk up the stairs. Came here around 6 pm on a Friday and was able to get seated. It got busier throughout the evening with every table full by the time we left. Staff is friendly here and they accept credit cards (one card per table). For food, we ordered, Pork BBQ, Lechon Kawali, Lumpia and Tokwat Baboy (fried tofu and chopped pork). We got the garlic rice (for $1 more) instead of the white rice that comes as default. All the food was so good especially the pork bbq skewers, lechon and lumpia. For drinks, we ordered the Sago and the Mango Juice. The Sago was on the sweeter side, one friend did not like it as it was too sweet. read more
