I ordered the T-bone steak for lunch. The stark tasted like it had been boiled and thrown on the flattop to put a little browning on it. It was also the thinnest steak I've ever had. Tough and chewy and the only reason it wasn't dry is that it was boiled. The broccoli was way overcooked. It was mushy! The mashed potatoes were ok. The garlic bread was spongy. Every single IHOP is the same. They cater to young children with the sugary pancakes and other sugary treats and they cater to the (most)elderly who can only eat bland food. We went here for breakfast on a Sunday morning, knowing the food isn't that great but if you stick to the pancake menu, you are usually okay. We spent the night at the Blue Fox Drive in and just wanted quick food before boarding the ferry. IHOP Oak Harbor has become our go-to for breakfast and lunchtime. For a while, it was a hit and miss kind of service but lately, under the management of Alfredo and attentive, pleasant servers like Tarah and Angel, service has been consistently good or great. Alfredo is friendly but also a hardworking manager, always willing to lend a helping hand to his staff. The restaurant offers sandwiches, omelettes, waffles, and a variety of food items besides pancakes which are pretty good. The place when it's crowded seems to be able to keep the noise at comfortable level and not intrusive to my earshot! The service was good, but couldn't overcome that the food was HORRENDOUS! I ordered Cinnastack pancakes (stack of 4). It was supposed to have the cinnamon flavoring between each level. It had a couple "squirts" between two layers, one being the top! Then cream cheese FROSTING on top. I got a cream cheese flavored drizzle. I had to ask for more. I've given Ihop 2 chances now, 1st time it took a little over an hour to get our food, once it arrived it was dried out from being on the warmer so long... the banana pancakes were very dry and the bananas were practically dehydrated. 2nd time I did a to go order, the order took 51 min to make its way to me in the waiting area. Reason we chose to come here: it's new in town and open early. There are very few places to eat in Oak Harbor that open before 7:00. What I liked: Impossible patties were a nice "find" as there are no protein options for vegans at Oak Harbor Cafe or Noe Jose. I paired the Impossible patties with a side of fruit for a decent breakfast. The waitress said she was still training but she did a great job. She was very attentive and kind. A couple of people in my party mentioned they were cold. I was fine, temperature-wise. The big windows on either end lend a lot of light to the building but also contribute to a cooler temperature. I was the first customer in the restaurant, like ever, I got up at 4:30 AM to be the first customer opening day. So this may be a bit biased. The reviews that say it's terrible, are not very accurate in my experience. Everyone in this location is great. There seems to be 2 chefs, one experienced and great, and one not experienced and just okay. But the thing in common with them is that they both cook the food in a decent manner, I've never had a bad thing here. I walked in at 1100 and a lady who appeared very stoned took my To Go order of One Chicken Fajita Omelette and One side of Crispy Hash Browns. I was told the wait would be fifteen minutes, I kindly thanked the lady and had a seat by the door. While waiting the staff went out of their way to ignore every person that showed up after me. At the Thirty Minute Mark I was told that they had a 15 person table and my food would be made after their entire order was done. I was not offered a beverage or anything while I waited and I ended up being the door man for the elderly and disabled because there was No Hostess to assist their patrons with the door. I wanted to surprise my best friend with brunch for her birthday. The pictures below are what the menu looks like and what the order looked like. Also I tried to order online and the service was unavailable. Overall a completely unacceptable way to spend twenty dollars and tip ten dollars in advance. Lesson learned there. read more

I thought I would try I hop in Oak Harbor again. First time we waited 30 minutes for coffee and even longer for our order. I talked to the Manager and he said he would take care of it. Because I complained about waiting so long he walked away and said that I need to be nice. Second time my pancakes and eggs were cold. I thought 3rd time would have improved by then. My toast was cold. As if they took it out of the fridge and slapped it on a plate. The server was really nice. But the food was always not cooked all the way or cold. The I hop in Mount Vernon's food is so much better. I guess when you pay 23 dollars for coffee an Omelet and toast you would want it to be good. Disappointed again.... read more

This was NOT our first time there. However it WAS our best experience. From the time we wa walk in was greeted immediately and made feel right at home. The sercie was quick, the hostes took our order and food came quickly. The food was cooked and presented very nicely. Best part was the hostess and managers made the visit great. Took time to talk with us and learned who they were. Like a famy get together. I like the conversation and service when I go out, it was great. The place was clean, felt inviting. I'll be back. Had breakfast on a Thursday, when very few tables were occupied. Despite this, service was slow. Waffles arrived barely warm, with a portion of refrigerated butter. Needless to say, the butter never melted on the waffle. I also had eggs, bacon, hash browns, and coffee. They were acceptable, though the coffee wasn't very hot and didn't have much flavor. The server did offer to have a new waffle made for me, but since she hadn't been attentive sooner, it was too late and I no longer wanted a waffle. Horrible service! We had Angelyn and right from the start she made us feel uncomfortable asking for anything. We ordered coffee and there was no sugar at the table, but she acted as if it was such a trouble or unreasonable for us to ask. We only saw her one more time when she came to bring the food. I asked for ketchup and again was met with an attitude that this was an unreasonable request. We ran out of waters and had to flag her down to be able to check out. When she brought the bill she pre-populated the suggested tip of 18% which would normally not be a problem for good service, but she did bare minimum while clearly annoyed with us the entire time. It started with the doors. The hand written sign says "Hard Pull", and it was correct, a very hard pull, was not expecting the large pressure differential between outside and inside. When the door starts to open, it causes a wind to howl inside the building. I think the extractor fans in the bathroom rooms and kitchen are creating this difference in pressures. Good luck trying to open those when the winds are up, as they often are around here. Rather quiet for prime breakfast time, seated quickly and drinks promptly delivered. It was quite cool, with a draft down my neck. Tried another booth and same thing, cool with a draft. Placed our order and waited, using my coffee cup to warm my hands, and keeping my jacket on. While waiting we got to enjoy the overload music, featuring various wailing high pitched singers from various unknown bands. They obviously did not look at the demographics for Whidbey Island. The music coupled with the no ceiling, hard surface architecture made if difficult for us to converse, very noisy. Food finally arrived, and was quite tepid in temperature, and very average in taste. Entering the toilet had a similar wind through the opening door, caused by the extractor fan in the room. Given the noise and cool temperatures we will probably not be back. read more

At 5pm no one was there my table ordered before I got there. I arrived and I wasn't approached or asked what I'd like. My husband had to get the waiter. The waiter tells me 20mins after I order then the computer broke and that my order was never put in but my table got all their food and I'm sure the computer wasn't broken then. We get the bill and kids eat free and all the kids food was on the bill and over charged for large drinks when they got small apple juices. Just zero customer service. A party of four walks in and their names were taken down first, meanwhile my party and another were waiting before them. So we went to this IHOP. Much like any other IHOP I do not expect it to be the best. Having said that this is the worse IHOP I have ever been to. Half empty restaurant but it still took them a sold half hour to bring water and another half hour to take our order. I would say 45. Minutes to get our food. Food was not good even allowing for the place we were at. The syrup (blueberry, strawberry) did not taste like berries but did taste like chemicals. I have avoided I-Hop restaurants for years because it seems that all they sell is sugar and bad coffee. But, now that a new shop opened in my town, my wife and I decided to check it out. My wife ordered the 55+ French Toast and found it to be very good. She said that it is a good thing she ordered under the 55+ menu because the regular order would have been too much. I decided to save the pancake test for a later visit and had the 55+ Rise N Shine (2 eggs OE, bacon, hash-browns, toast). My meal was quite good -- it is my standard breakfast -- and the price was right. The sourdough toast was better that I get at most restaurants. Coffee, good; Service was very good. Ambiance, not so much. The music (?) was too loud! I found it disturbing and escaping to the men's room did not help, in fact it was louder in there. Waited almost an hour for our food and then ended up just getting it togo. I checked the bag before i left and noticed almost half our order was missing. Yesterday was the second time I have eaten there. I ordered the mushroom spinach omelette with a side of regular pancakes. I had ordered the same meal on my first visit the omelette was a ten on a scale of 1-10 with 10 the best. Yesterday I rated the omelette a one. It was dry, tasteless and lukewarm at best. Thought we would stop by and check out the new place in town! Not impressed... we were seated right away, but have sat for over ten minutes with no acknowledgment at all! No water, drinks, silverware, nada!! I'm a hold out though so I can provide an honest opinion on this new place.. it is sad though, as a new place to already have a bad review! The table next to us just left! They were seated about 7 min before us, they also had 2 small children. It's not very busy at the moment, so it's kind of strange for the slow service. The Manager just stopped by to say Hi, and voila!, just like that we have drinks and a server to take our order.. so other than working out the bugs on new staff and a new restaurant it seems like a traditional trip to IHOP. It was about 20 min for contact from the server! We will be back in another month or so to see how things have evolved! Without any close competition, this is the worst restaurant in this city and for at least fifty miles around. On my first visit, just after IHOP opened in Oak Harbor, the servicer, Megan?, was great. I can say that about the food. I made three visits to this store before deciding not to return. Each time I had servers that could care less and food I would not serve except the rubbish bin. Horrible, Horrible, do not even consider this establishment, we have many really good eateries in this city with great service and family-like atmosphere and high-quality food. read more
