I've always dined here whenever I'm in town. This time around we were a party of 15 and we were able to be seated quickly. It's a pretty big restaurant so it's good for large groups. However, keep in mind that the food might take longer. For us, it was not that long and maybe because it was brunch time. We came here after church. I don't remember our servers name but she was efficient and nice. Nothing really stood out of the ordinary but that's fine since we were a big party. Food: Chicken Fried Steak Traditional Breakfast with hash browns, toast, 2 eggs and bacon The bacon to me was a bit overcooked. It was crispy and some people like it that way but it looked like it was dehydrated. I enjoyed my chicken fried steak. It was cooked perfectly and the gravy tasted yummy. Not salty and good taste. I was not a fan of the house potatoes. It needed some kind of seasoning. The eggs were cooked good. Overall, this is a great spot for brunch that can accommodate large groups. read more

I am from TN and I have lived in Southern California for over 10 years. I have also traveled to 49 states and many cities in Latin America. I know "real Latin/Mexican" and "Tex Mex" food. This place is bad. The flavor of the queso dip was similar to canned nacho cheese. The fajita steak not only lacked seasoning/flavor but it was also chopped into tiny pieces. The fajitas also had ALOT of fatty pieces. The beans were mediocre and the rice was dry. The shredded beaf enchiladas were the only good item we had. The service was SLOW, we waited 12 minutes before being able to order. We also had to get up and find someone to ask for drink refills! read more

I should have known I wouldn't get what I ordered because the waitress didn't know what I was asking for and she asked me to show her on the menu. I asked for the fiesta salad with no tomatoes and with steak as the protein. She didn't write down my order either. I'm pretty sure the dressing was regular ranch too when I asked for the chipotle ranch. And there was maybe 1 Tbsp for the whole salad. The overall taste was okay, but definitely bland compared to what I was expecting. The drink was fine, pretty standard mojito. We arrived super early, so we were the only customers. The space is really pretty and clean. Our waitress was fabulous and even visited with us about how she likes living on Whidbey and why (we asked). My crepes were delicious! The Mill at the Kasteel... A culinary experience I personally gravitated around for about three years. Today, however, suggests that maybe we shouldn't meet our heroes. My wife and I stayed at the Auld Holland years ago, and I've delivered countless meals for DoorDash from this restaurant. It has always been a personal landmark when passing through town for work. I'm not sure why it took so long for me to order a meal for myself, but the day had finally come. I've always enjoyed the atmosphere, inside and out. It's a comforting welcome to Whidbey Island after a long drive from larger towns around the Puget Sound. I was somewhat confused to see a neon sign with a foliage background (like one of those photo op walls influencers gravitate towards). Personally, it took me out of the old European home aesthetic that seems to be the original idea. I ordered take out, because I like to eat in my hotel room alone like a weirdo when I travel. I wasn't quite ready to eat just yet, so I SCHEDULED for the food to be picked up at 4:30 pm. It was to my surprise that the food was promptly cooked and placed on the pick-up counter shortly after I placed the order at around 3:15 pm. I confirmed this with the server who gave me the bag when he said "it's been sitting here for a while". He said that when they see a ticket, they just cook it and don't pay attention to the scheduled time on the ticket. I don't want to sound overly critical about the service, but I would suggest that the cooks make the food a little closer to the pick up time to keep it hot for the customers. Moving on to the actual food; and this is where I became significantly more disappointed by my experience with this restaurant. I'm not a chef by any means. Nor am I a butcher. But I'm fairly certain that the steak I received was a NY Strip rather than a Ribeye. That was a big red flag for me based on the cost of this steak. However, on a more positive note, it was cooked relatively close to what I asked for which was a medium rare. It was tender and didn't taste half bad. The gristle gave me a silent jump scare as I chewed, but I personally don't mind it. Vegetables and the mashed potatoes were cooked. That's always a good sign... Sarcasm aside, they weren't anything to cry about. I really enjoyed the gravy which worked very well with the mashed potatoes and vegetables. I ordered a side cinnamon roll, and received one and a half rolls. The half roll looked as if it was cooked like a French toast. Interesting, but unexpected. The taste was pleasant, but the side of syrup made me question whether I actually had the correct order at that point. Overall, I will probably stay within driving distance of The Mill at The Kasteel from now on. The takeout service was disappointing, and the food was questionable but edible. read more

Finding a (mostly) Mexican restaurant inside of a Dutch Kasteel (Castle) was...unexpected, to say the least. I'm assuming that the restaurant was (once?) the property of the owners of the adjacent Auld Holland Inn, and switched hands at some point. Either way, nothing appears to have been lost in the handoff, because the food here is excellent, even if a bit off-theme! My wife somehow decided against ordering her favorite, a Monte Cristo, in favor of some Carne Asada, while I went with the Steak Ranchero. In hindsight, we probably should have traded orders. While both were delicious, the Steak Ranchero included mushrooms (which I hate and my wife loves) that were not listed on the menu, and I vastly preferred the taste and texture of her entrée to mine. That said, I was not disappointed. I'd order it again, sans mushrooms, if the Carne Asada wasn't on the menu. Since it is, it'll be my order of choice any time we find ourselves back in Oak Harbor - it's that good! Service was attentive a bit uneven: we were asked if we were ready to order *three times* before the water arrived at our table, by different servers; the first two times within 30 seconds of our butts touching the seats. Once we had, we didn't see hide nor hair of any server, other than when our food was delivered, for the rest of the visit, until the came (a little later than I'd have liked) at the end. Those nitpicks aside, I love everything about the aesthetic, and despite the somewhat confused cultural collision taking place here, nothing about it detracts from the experience. I wish more establishments would unabashedly embrace a theme, identity or culture...even if it comes to them second-hand. So, call it what you want: castle, kasteel, castillo - doesn't matter. Just know that when you're here, you're going to eat like a King...a Koning...or a Rey. read more

Went here for family dinner. We had the triple dip , sweet potato fries with honey mustard , and mozz sticks for an app. We were all in on burgers, pasta with steak , fajitas, eggs Benedict, and chicken fried steak. Tried a couple of cups of the clam chowder. All dishes were flavorful and just right temp. Washed the meal down with the signature jalapeno and cucumber margarita, soft drinks. No room for dessert. Wait staff was pleasant and attentive. Love this place! Look for the windmill. Next time turn on the fireplaces for us, we will be back! Try it you'll like it! read more

Was in Oak Harbor for a few days and tried out this cool breakfast spot nearby. The entire restaurant is inside a windmill. The inside was pretty nice. The inside of the restaurant was rustic looking but was pretty packed when I was three. I ordered the chicken fried steak with gravy, along with hash browns and scrambled eggs. The food was delicious. I love eating chicken fried steak with gravy and this one at the Kasteel was definitely pretty good! Thebsevice was great and the staff was nice. My friend and I had dinner here on 10/26. We were promptly greeted seated, and brought water and then asked what other beverages we might like to have. Our server, Esme S., was friendly, quick, and offered us suggestions. Our food was served promptly, hot, and was tasty. At the end of the meal, Esme thanked us for our business and said that she hoped that she would see us again soon. We enjoyed the experience so much that we went back the next morning for breakfast and also had Esme S. as our server again. The restaurant is very big, clean, and basic, which is everything you need for a relaxing meal at the beginning or end of the day. read more

I asked why they don't serve the free chips with the Mexican food we ordered, the answer I got was that because they are also offering the American food and so it wasn't exclusively Mexican. Best Pork Tamales anywhere in the US. The thin layer of masa and corn wrapped around a tasty full packed spicy pork is phenomenal. Ratio is best in class. Basically pork enchiladas wrapped in a masa. Dozen to freeze is an easy decision. The Pozole is another top notch town secret. And the Molé is not to be discounted. With fresh made corn chips. Another perfect blend. 3 legit specialties. I always drive past this place and never really considered trying it until yesterday. The outside is quite a sight to see, as well as inside there is a mural of the same outside entrance. The service was thoughtful, and food came out quickly. Plus, we were seated by the fireplace which was very cozy & comforting. As for quality, I finished my plate and left feeling very satisfied. We ordered chicken chilaquiles and the breakfast burrito. The food was very fresh but I would have to recommend more flavor in the verde salsa and maybe more spice in the chorizo. The breakfast burrito was ok. Drinks.. Highly recommend the tropical mango moscato and the Cadillac margarita. Environment/Staff Super friendly! Okay, I wasn't sure if we could believe the hype based on posts on the Whidbey Island Community Facebook page. The presentation of plates don't look that appetizing. And frankly, the building is old. Albeit, it is clean. Just strange decor. I will say they had local art on the walls that you could purchase via venmo or PayPal and take home with you. Which is a really cool feature I have only seen a few times before. ...But let me tell you: I have removed the foot from my mouth. Our order: onion rings, sweet potato fries, bowl of fruit, two sodas, Chicken Molé, and Country Fried Steak with a salad and mashed potatoes with sausage gravy. Listen, I fed my child first, ate our appetizers and then my salad...and my country fried steak? It was still crispy (but pillowy soft) underneath that delicious gravy. My only knock on this place is that there wasn't a changing table in either restroom. I changed his diaper on a bench in the lobby. To which the young lady at the front desk made mention she was writing down the need for a changing table to give to her supervisor. All in all: we are P L E A S E D. All three of us! read more

Went for the first time to dine in and was very impressed. Sat right next to the fireplace too! The staff was great and kindly gave me great choice options to consider, etc. The food was fantastic, especially the Clam Chowder. The sourdough bread with it was AMAZING! First I love the ambiance. Great old building, at least meant to look old. It looks like the kind of place my grandfather would take me. (In a good way) The service was excellent. The food was good. Not great, but good. Pretty much a mix of American and Mexican diner food. Probably the biggest winner was my wife who loved her triple berry crepes (it was one of the specials that day). Also, she has a pretty sensitive stomach and she wasn't sick when she got home. That is a win for us. We will be back. read more

I went here for the first time this week for dinner. The food was surprisingly good! This is a solid dinner option. I ordered the Alfredo linguine with chicken, and was happily surprised that it included a salad, and some vegetables in the pasta. My dad ordered the pork carnitas and said it is probably the best he's ever had in WA (the best ever is in Los Angeles). Good portions, good food. The only thing preventing me from giving 5 stars is the price. Although the food was very good, it was on the expensive side ($23 for pasta and $20 for carnitas). I would eat here again. read more

What a quaint restaurant!! The building looks like an old mill and the inside is decorated to match. We sat on the large outdoor patio. Unfortunately, I thought the food was just okay and was kind of pricey. I ordered the mole enchiladas which came with two enchiladas and a side of rice and beans. My enchiladas were just average, nothing too memorable. My partner ordered steak fajitas which he also thought was very average. The steak wasn't grilled particularly well and the peppers were a little soggy. I can't speak for any of the breakfast food but it seemed popular at the other tables. This is a cute little mom and pops restaurant...We got into town late and weren't expecting much...The menu was huge and had a little of what everyone wanted. My fiancé loved the Mexican food and I enjoyed chicken Marsala and our friend loved the steak. We will definitely be back!!! read more
