I used to be a big fan of Ika. I've brought countless friends here, I've raved about this place. Now I'm here to correct that mistake. The food quality has been slipping for months. I kept giving them the benefit of the doubt. That ends now. Today, we came as a group of five to celebrate my friend. What should have been a memorable evening became one of the most infuriating dining experiences I've had in years. After we sat down, our waitress was nowhere to be seen for 10-15 minutes. Even when we saw her, we flagged her down 3-4 times and were still ignored. I had to physically get up and chase someone down, and still waited another 5 minutes for someone to take our order. There were only 3 tables in the restaurant. The waitress never once asked me or my friend's mom for our drink order- completely skipped over us. And when drinks did come out, she brought the wrong one to my friend's mom. When we asked for water refills. She filled two glasses out of five and walked off, when my glass was near empty. She then dropped a plate on our table. Moments later, I reached for the food and she snatched it back saying it was for another table. Rude doesn't begin to cover it. We asked for an extra spoon, a completely normal request, and it was met with a dirty look, as if we had asked for something outrageous. When I asked for extra ginger, she placed it at the farthest corner of the table. Whether intentional or not, it felt extremely careless and rude. We ordered uni nigiri, which is not a cheap order. It arrived without seaweed. I've ordered uni nigiri many times here, and it's always come with seaweed. When I flagged it, they didn't remake it, just shoved the seaweed under the rice. An insult to a $20+ piece of nigiri. Throughout all of this, this waitress had a visible attitude toward every reasonable request. What made it worse is that I'm Asian myself, and it was clear she was specifically singling out me and my friend's mom above everyone else at the table. The dismissiveness, the hostility, the microaggressions felt pointed and deliberate. I can only call it what it is: racism and sexism. No one should have to feel targeted at a restaurant they've loyally supported for years. Ika has lost a longtime champion. I will be actively discouraging everyone I know from setting foot in this place. Save your money, your time, and your celebration, and go literally anywhere else.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ ***Update*** I'd like to clarify a few things since the facts were misrepresented by your response. Funny you bring up my arrival time as if that somehow discredits me. I let my group know I would be a few minutes late, and it was not even close to being an hour. What matters is that after I sat down, our entire group waited 10-15 minutes waving down staff and being repeatedly ignored. I then got up and spoke to a different staff member who was filling ginger by the bar, not even our assigned waitress, and she had to find someone else to help us. That is not "flagging rudely", that is a group of paying customers desperately trying to get basic service. Again, there were only three tables including us. You're welcome to review your security footage to verify this. You claim you were watching closely, but if you were running a restaurant, I find it hard to believe you had the bandwidth to monitor our table that carefully. And if you really were watching, you'd know that we tried to flag down a waiter for over 10 minutes. You also never addressed how long the waitress took to take our orders, never asking me for my drink order, bringing my friend's mom the wrong drink, making a disgusted face when we asked for an extra spoon, dropping the wrong dish on our table and rudely snatching it away, and placing the ginger at the farthest end of the table. Funny how none of that made it into your response. Most importantly, you said nothing about your waitress's sexist behavior toward me and my friend's mother. We were singled out, dismissed, and treated with hostility that the rest of our table did not experience. That was the most egregious part of our visit and you chose to completely ignore it. The uni argument is not worth debating. Seaweed in nigiri is a global standard. Doubling down on that is just embarrassing. I even called that evening to provide this feedback directly, and was told the manager was not available and would call me back the next day. That never happened. Instead of having a conversation and being willing to listen, you chose to come onto Yelp and make this a personal attack against me. Our group was only there because of my recommendation. I wasn't expecting much from a sushi spot in a strip mall, so call me pleasantly surprised that sushi restaurant far surpassed my expectations! It's too nice to be considered a hole in the wall, so let's call it a hidden gem. We started with the miso soup (a must have in the winter months) and shishito peppers, both were excellent. The peppers were a little sweeter than expected but the flavor went excellent with a cold Japanese beer. Our mains included two spicy specialty rolls (twist and shout, and another) as well as a few types of nigiri. All was fantastic, especially the Black Sea Bream. This was my first time at Ika Sushi, and it was such a great experience. We stopped in for a late lunch, so it wasn't very busy, and we were seated right away. The space itself is really cute and the staff was super friendly, which set the tone for a relaxed meal. We ordered a little bit of everything: the Brussels sprouts, a salmon avocado roll, a blue crab avocado roll, an albacore hand roll, and something called the Popeye roll. The Brussels sprouts were cooked perfectly, with a nice char and a white miso sauce that was so good we ended up dipping other rolls in it. The salmon roll was tightly rolled with a generous amount of fish, and I really appreciated how well the rice held together even when dipping it in soy sauce and wasabi--no crumbling, which is a win. The blue crab avocado roll was really lovely, and you could definitely taste the fresh blue crab. The albacore hand roll was beautifully done and probably one of the best I've had in the city--simple but really high quality. But the standout for me was the Popeye roll. I never would have thought to put spinach in a sushi roll, but it worked so well. The flavor was unique, and again a little miso sauce took it to another level. One small but thoughtful detail that I loved: after we finished eating, they brought out a little plate of orange slices. It was a nice refreshing way to end the meal and kind of cleanse the palate--simple, but it added a really nice touch to the whole experience. We just had soft drinks with the meal, but overall everything was excellent. Quick, easy, and delicious. Top notch food requires the attention that modern patience finds hard to stomach. Business lunch (4 of us): we got the Blue Dynamite Roll, Cajun Roll, Vegas Roll, the I-215 Roll, The Joker Roll, the Pacific Roll, the Hawaiian Roll, and the Sunset Roll. Food was a good amount. Place was clean, and the artwork on the wall was nice. Unlike many other sushi experiences, each of these had a fantastic and unique flavor - hands down, unparalleled from any other sushi place I've ever been to. After ANOTHER 20 minutes(been an hour now since we got seated), I finally asked to talk to a manager. We watched a table next to us get seated 15 min after us, and get their food before we got the sake. After I complained we finally got our rolls/app, and a fresh bottle of sake "on the house", which was hot this time but still a plum flavor. Check came and nothing was comped. WOW WOW WOW is all I have to say! (Just kidding, I have a lot more than that as I always do, hahaha). In a singular visit, this has easily become one of my favorite sushi places in the Salt Lake valley. I have been wanting to try Ika sushi for a while now and finally had the opportunity to do so last week. From the outside, it is very unassuming and tucked away within the Riverwalk Shopping Center. The interior of the restaurant is not huge, so while my friends and I were over the course of our for dinner, it filled fairly quickly. I have visited multiple restaurants that were in this specific storefront location that haven't stayed (a poke place, teriyaki, and more), and I HOPE so badly that Ika thrives here because the quality of their sushi was exceptional. One of my friends ordered the Brussel Sprouts which I had the opportunity to try a bite of. To be honest, my first instinct in a sushi place would not be to order Brussel sprouts, but I am so glad my friend did! They are cooked in a citrus white miso sauce and that flavor of the sauce absolutely transforms this dish! Very flavorful! Moving to the sushi, I ordered some Hamachi nigiri and based on my research from other reviews, I really wanted to try out the Twist & Shout roll. When I tell you that the Hamachi nigiri had one of the best quality pieces of raw fish I have ever had, I mean it! Beyond the flavor alone, biting into this piece of Hamachi and through to the rice was like slicing through a soft stick of butter - the texture was perfect! I was almost shocked. To continue to on to the Twist & Shout roll, I cannot express enough that this roll is a MUST try. If you are like me and love a good spicy sushi roll, and this one has the perfect balance of spice. With the chili oil and fresh jalapenos, you have such a nice level of heat that balances so well with the rest of the roll. Also, the addition of the garlic chips adds a nice crunch to each bite without it taking away from the overall texture of the sushi. To end my review, I ask one thing from people who live in this area - please help Ika do well and visit! DELICIOUS!!! I am obsessed!! I ordered a salmon roll and miso eggplant to start with. The eggplant was the perfect balance of umami and the natural flavors of the eggplant. The salmon was very fresh. My husband ordered the twist and shout. I had the salmon lover. The sauce that came with the sushi was EVERYTHING. The sweet, the crisp refreshing taste of onion, the season was prefect. I loved it. The twist and shout is out of this world, you get the taste of tuna, the sauce, the albacore on top then that jalapeño kicks in with the crunchy bits on top. Tried at tsunami down the road the other night and while that is passable for sushi this is legitimately a true experience of what sushi should be; with a wider fish menu and sushi chefs that take this seriously why would you waste time eating at a more watered down sushi bar. I sat the sushi bar and watch the guys work and the attention to detail was incredible! You can see from the deep look of focus from the chefs here that they not only respect the culture that is of Japanese cuisine they engross it. I started with my usual test of Salmon, yellow tail and mackerel (which is always a good sign that the sushi will be that of substance. Speaking with the chef he recommended I go with fatty tuna, red snapper, amber jack and black snapper. I finished my meal with the standard sweet sushi of tamago and unagi The vibe here is definitely more in line with focus being the food and not so much the over the top unnecessary decor to fake a high end experience as some of the other places I've visited on this trip. Went here after reading about how they make the effort to elevate the rice they use in the sushi. I mentioned that to the server who had no clue and just said she thought the rice was fine. That's what we had. Fine rice. I didn't notice the seasoning being special, and the rice on the nigiri we had was as compressed as most standard places places do it. Way too much. The concept of the rice kernels being separate at all was not there. Other reviews mentioned the authenticity of the sushi, I just mention it was not to the caliber of the sushi we had at an outlet mall sushi shop near Mt Fuji. In other words, standard, nothing special sushi at a mall. The specialty sushi restaurants in Tokyo, Kyoto and elsewhere, were better. Don't know how that matches being "authentic" or not. That's a term that gets thrown around a lot. I can only give my experience of eating sushi in Japan. It was very different here. Now that's out of the way, we had an excellent meal. We started with the kumamoto oysters. The mignonette with the oysters was excellent. The deep fried soft sheel lobster with ponzu was excellent. The uni shooter with raw quail egg on top was nice. I don't know if I'd get it again, though. The miso soup was above average. The markup on the bottles of sake is more than fair. We finished up with a selection of nigiri. All was good. I won't elaborate beyond having a couple pictures. If I lived near here, I'd be back, but it's not better than my local place I go to near my house, so not as likely. read more

I was craving sushi so bad and since I don't eat fish often, I knew we had to find a place worth of breaking a long period of no fish. What drew us to Ika Sushi was the diverse selections of speciality rolls. Most places have spicy tuna in almost every single roll and/or eel sauce on top. I can't do spicy anything so having a wide selection of non-spicy specialty rolls was key. At Ika sushi, we were able to get a wide selections of rolls, some containing salmon only, mix of tuna/yellowtail/albacore, baked fish/crab mix, rolls with ponzu sauce (my favorite!), and Vegetarian/Vegan rolls. We had the twist and shout roll, baked salmon roll, Alaska roll, tuna-albacore-yellowtail nigiri, vegetarian ume roll, vegetarian inari roll, and the vegetarian bamboozled roll. Every single roll was sooo good. The rolls and nigiri had a small amount of rice and lots of fish which is always a plus and allows you to order more rolls! We came on a Friday night around 5:30pm and there was no wait. Ika sushi is across the Midvale TopGolf. We are definitely coming back to try the other rolls! Please don't skip this place if you like sushi; Ika Sushi has a wide selection of speciality rolls, nigiri, and vegetarian/vegan rolls for everyone. Came in to celebrate a graduation with my family and two friends on May 16th. Food was delicious, but it was next to impossible to get the waitress's attention after first placing an order. One of my friends finally went and flagged down the waitress and that seemed to temporarily resolve the situation. Don't think we ever got the correct drinks either, and all were served without ice. Even after asking. I also noticed the disturbing trend of the waitress being very kind to myself and the other men at the table, but being extremely passive aggressive to all the women. Frankly, this ruined the experience and will be my primary reason for not going back any time soon. Even worse, I see similar reviews about that evening and have observed blatant lies being posted in replies from others that were in our group. This is unacceptable. Attractive dining space, decent food and service, but a couple lackluster details won't put Ika low on my dining list. We tried several appetizers: edamame, shishito peppers, and tempura vegetables & shrimp. Those are all good, particularly the tempura which had an interesting variety of vegetables. The chicken yakisoba was really good and I might get that for takeout sometime. The sushi was good quality & they have real wasabi! We also tried all the desserts! The ube ice cream & crepe cake were great, the mochi were the biggest disappointment of the evening. For $8 you get two teeny tiny mochi, each cut into 4 pieces for some unknown reason. This made them hard to eat- pieces were a bit too big for the small dessert spoons, but you couldn't pick them up to eat either. Our waiter was not knowledgeable of what dishes or rolls were gluten free, and didn't offer suggestions or seem interested in helping figure it out. He did bring tamari when we asked. The bento box with miso cod was such a pleasure. We love how the veggies and the fish were just flavor bombs in our mouth. The cod was simply soft, buttery, and delicious. Some might say it's a little bit on the salty side, but that's inherently the saltiness from miso. I would easily say it's the best cod we've had. I'm becoming a regular at Ika Sushi, because it serves the best nigiri sushi that I've had in Utah, by far. By "best", I mean greatest variety and quality of fish, and most authentic preparation. The chef dresses the nigiri with nikiri and various condiments like green onion, yuzu kosho and finger lime vesicles. It's not the buck nekked fish that's typical of the United States and never seen in Japan. I almost always order the Omakase [nigiri] Sushi Set, which includes 10 pieces of nigiri sushi, plus a hand roll of your choice. I choose the spider roll, which is made with tempura-fried soft shell crab. On September 30, the Omakase Sushi Set cost only $40. When I returned on October 13, miso soup is now included and the cost is $60! I don't like miso soup THAT much! To be fair, $40 was a screaming bargain that was too good to last. Inflation, right? In comparison to the cost of other omakase nigiri sushi sets that I've had all over the world, it's STILL a bargain, but no longer a screaming one. I don't like to post many negative reviews, but just had an omakase nigiri sushi set at Morimoto Maui that wasn't nearly as good as at Sushi Ika in variety of fish, preparation and, most importantly, taste. The sushi here is to die for!! We had 4 rolls that were signature rolls, octopus sashimi which was amazing, and some edamame of course. The waiter was great! He had many tables and the only waiter and was so attentive and helpful! He had such a good vibe and positive attitude. The only downfall in the beginning was that the food was very slow. We were the first persons to order and be in the restaurant and it seemed to take forever for our sushi. But the wait was worth it! read more
