On November 10, 2019, my wife and I found ourselves in a motel in Newburgh NY for the evening. We were told there is a diner of unknown quality nearby. We drove to the Ikaros. My wife ordered the Prime Rib and I, gluten free, ordered a Greek omelet with feta, tomatoes, onions and MAYBE spinach (to be honest I'm not sure about the Spinach). There was a sign on the entrance announcing that Ikaros now serves a few gluten free products. I did NOT see the notice about "extra charge." In fairness, GF products are substantially more expensive than wheat based analogs. The prime rib was ENORMOUS and, according to my wife, delicious. That's the good news. The beef, ordered medium, was very well done and CHILLY. As the manager explained, when she apologized and removed it mostly uneaten from our bill, the meat is cooked earlier in the day and then refrigerated. I have no idea how they tried to warm it, but whatever method failed miserably. Plus, with reheating, there is NO WAY to order the prime rib rare or medium rare! My omelet was OKAY but salty except that I saw NO feta. It is possible that the feta was finely crumbled and vanished into the Egg Beaters (r). Maybe the feta caused the saltiness? Along with the omelet, I got homefries. These were cold and soggy. NOT FRESH! Finally, the bill. I was charged $3.50 for TWO slices of GF toast. I know how expensive GF breads are, but that is excessive! Please keep in mind that the manager IMMEDIATELY and without hassle apologized for the meat and removed it from our bill. Also, service was decent. But I cannot recommend this restaurant based on this experience. We had a very nice lunch at Ikaros Diner while driving up to Lake George on I-87. The diner is not far off of the Interstate. I ordered the Ikaros Panini which had grilled chicken, feta, roasted red peppers and sautéed spinach with plenty of french fries and tzatziki sauce. The sandwich and fries were piping hot and the ciabatta roll was very fresh. All very good. FC ordered the Italian Combo special which was loaded with deli meats, cheese, lettuce, onion and tomato. Came with fries and a cup of soup. The Yankee Bean soup was very good and served very hot. We both wrapped up a half sandwich away for later. Our server was very friendly and eager to make our meal pleasant. It had been a while since I had eaten here. I only went because most other restaurants were crowded at 10:30 am on a Saturday and I figured I'd give it one last shot to see if it had improved. The parking lot was somewhat full which was promising. We walked in and were promptly seated and as in the past we were seated at a table that was grimy. They have these round tables with fold down sides and the wood folding part was very greasy and was unbalanced since it had seen better days. My coffee was served in a cup with a chip in it right were I had to put my mouth - it wasn't sharp but it was just not appealing. I ordered the blueberry pancakes and hubby ordered the big breakfast with a side of hash browns. It didn't take long for our order to come out. Hubby's food was just ok - his eggs were dried out and brown on top, he had two thin slices of bacon, his ham steak was once again just about cooked on one side and his pancakes were just ok. The hash browns were cold and the server brought out a new plate. The new hash browns were warmer but were very bland. I had a bite and the potatoes were hard and some were under cooked. My blueberry pancakes were good and cooked well but had no pizzazz - no blueberries or compote on top, no whipped cream - just three pancakes on a plate. Our server asked if we wanted more coffee but our cups were full at that point. A little while later I would have liked a warm up but she never came by to ask again or came by with the coffee pot like some other restaurants. The cleanliness and food were mediocre at best again and thus I am going to have to drive a little further for a better diner from now on. read more

After working out for 2 hours I'm really starving. Since this place is right next to the hotel why not just eat here. Ugh! Big mistake. I ordered the "Chicken Souvlaki" and it was so bad that I had to force myself to take a few bites more just because I'm really starving. Years ago my family and I had eaten at Ikaros. We were not impressed with the food and decided we were never going back. I got talked into having lunch there recently by a friend. I had ordered the open corned beef Ruben sandwich with fries. I did not eat but a few bites as the meat or something on the platter gave off a nasty smell. Also, too much sauerkraut. Huge portions, healthy options, free veggie platter. This is one of the best diners I've been to. The building is big, bright, and clean. The service was very friendly. They have Newburgh Brewery on tap here. I got the avocado chicken "sandwich"; sandwich in quotes because it was so big there was no way you could close it and eat it like a sandwich. It was late had just left work and was looking for good food but didn't have anything particular in mind. My sister was over so she suggested a diner and always in the mood to try something new I talked her and her husband into trying Ikaros since I pass it all the time. We pulled up into a nice size parking lot to a diner that looked new and very clean and inviting. We walked in and were almost immediately greeted by the owner who sat us down as we discussed the amazing looking dessert that was on display. We were seated and another server came over with a veggie platter for us to munch on. It was a plate of raw veggies - broccoli, carrots, radish and celery stick with ranch to dip. Very nice touch than the normal bread basket, veggies were crunchy and fresh. Our waitress Naomi came over introduced herself took our drink order. She made my sister a cherry Coke by adding grenadine to her soda which is always a sweet thing to do since they didn't have it on tap. We couldn't decide on an appetizer so I just ordered the sampler platter. After some discussion we ordered our entrees: My brother in law ordered the roasted lemon chicken with a side of mashed potatoes and corn, my sister ordered a gyro w/no onions, and I ordered a sunrise burger (sunny side egg, bacon, American cheese, lettuce, tomato) deluxe (fries & 3 onion rings) for an up charge. I discussed the onion rings and our waitress expressed how delicious they were. After that a warm bread basket was brought to the table and we discovered there was free wifi. The music playing was a great station and we just chatted about the day. About 7 minutes later the waitress comes over with a huge dish that consisted of 2 chicken fingers, 4 buffalo wings, 2 jalapeño poppers, freshly made spinach/artichoke dip w/tri colored chips, and bacon & tomato quesadilla. It was a huge serving and everything was piping hot smelled great and tastes just as good. I have never had a jalapeño popper but they had a crunch and were filled with a nacho cheese, wings had a buffalo/bbq flavor to them tasting broiled not deep fries, chicken fingers were juicy and tasty, quesadilla was amazing I was so surprised about the flavor, the spinach/artichoke dip which I normally avoid was so good! it was a cheese sauce style not mayo and creamy so I actually ate it. After eating this huge sampler plate thinking It was too much our main entree came out just long enough after we finished our appetizer and could breathe. The food all looked beautiful great presentation. Flavor was on point! The sunrise burger was all I want in a burger: big, char grilled taste, egg was sunny side up, crispy bacon, melted cheese and not overly toasted bread. I put the lettuce/tomato on took a bite and was sold! Burger was on point, fries were good onion rings were oily nothing of mention and could be skipped save the $$. Gyro was flavorful meat, warm pita fresh veggies very good. The roasted lemon chicken was huge came with stuffing and sides. It was a little over done so some of the wing was a tad dry but the rest of it was moist and had great flavor. Sides were warm and the potatoes tasted fresh bit out of the box. After much conversation and eating there was a lot to take home, except my burger it didn't make it I could not put it down. Naomi was constantly coming to refill our drinks without us asking very attentive and friendly waitress. Staff are friendly and it's walkable from the Days Inn. Their breakfast and lunch menus cover a lot of bases. And their tap beers are great too, lots of local brews if that's your jam (it's definitely mine). Had breakfast here at least twice, and the potatoes are unfortunately lackluster, needing more texture and more flavorful. This was a complaint many people had. However, their gyro was delicious and the tzatiki sauce is to do for. Wish I had a chance to try their Reuben, heard it was good. The matzo ball soup for amaze balls too. BLUF: A fantastic classic diner with a variety of Greek entrees to compliment the menu. A true gem. On the way back from Stewart airport, my friends and I decided to stop by Ikaros Diner. We knew that we were in for a treat as soon as we saw the classic shiny exterior for the diner. The menu is quite impressive, they have a breakfast, lunch and dinner option ranging from pancakes to gyros to hamburgers. They also have a stocked bar in case you need a morning after Bloody Mary or a quality mimosa. I went with the celebrity wrap which consisted of breaded chicken, bacon, lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes wrapped in a pita. The wrap was delicious and the chicken was crispy yet soft inside. The pita was a great compliment to the wrap instead of a tortilla. On the side, there were fresh French fries and I also ordered a short stack of French toast. Hey, don't judge, it was right between breakfast and lunch so I had to have best of two worlds. The French toast was extremely fluffy and had a hint of cinnamon. They melted like butter in my mouth. While eating I had to listen to the loud mouth manager havecway across the diner bitching about a young waitress and how she's 50 something years old and the young girl can and should be the one running up and down stairs not her. Today my food took a long time to come out, I was able to sip down a full mug of coffee, I never looked at my watch but it was a while. This building was previously named a different diner a few years back that was a total shit hole! Seriously reviews for the previous diner at this location was dreadful so when I saw stunning reviews for the new owners I was a bit of a skeptic. As online reviews continued to be consistently amazing for Ikaros I was super eager to give them a try and I was not disappointed. For the category of "diner" this was a really nice spot. The inside was made to look/feel modern and was kept looking pristine. Food was consistent with good quality diner food, keep in mind this isn't 5 star fine dining but a regular diner. So for what this place is, a diner, I was really happy with my overall experience. The young lady that served my table was attentive and even triple checking to make sure our orders were correct. Coffee to our table was delayed because she didn't want to give us "scraps" and told us it was delayed because she was making the coffee fresh for us. I thought that was so thoughtful because let's be real she could have not given a crap and just served us the bottom of the coffee pot (scraps) but instead she made sure coffee was fresh. During my visit I got the typical burger with fries and it was good to average at best. Wasn't the best burger in the world but it certainly wasn't the worst so I'd say it was average. This place used to be Johnny Ds. I have been to Johnny Ds more times than I can remember. A few months ago I came back from a trip and I noticed JD was no longer there. I was kinda sad because I used to go to JDs with my grandpa when he would fly up to visit. They kept the same building but the food is better in my opinion. I have eaten at ikeros 2 times and the food is really good. They have burgers and wraps and soups. They also have dinner items like chicken and steak. I have had the mozzarella sticks and fries. They were very good and hit the spot. They let me order to go which was cool. I will def be back to ickiros. The food is good.
