Excellent! We had breakfast there. It doesn't open til 8 a.m. But we were glad we waited. My husband had a complete breakfast sampler with coffee and I had bagel with cream cheese and lox and hot tea. Very filling and delicious. The ambiance is lovely, clean and bright. The Dunkin Donuts across the street did not have a place to sit down. Both of these establishments should consider sidewalk tables. We love to eat outside. read more

Very beautiful restaurant with an old world charm with its decor. Felt like a dining room at grandmas. The staff were very friendly and inviting, plus when the order was wrong they immediately corrected it without issue. I got three eggs your way, with sausage patties, hash browns and sourdough toast. Honestly it was good, nothing over the top amazing but a very good breakfast, the hash browns I will say I should sub them since they kind under-seasoned. A no-frills diner that has great customer service and fairly good coffee. My girlfriend and I split the gluten free French toast and were a bit underwhelmed as the toast was not thick but to be fair, I did enjoy the meal and the total cost for the gf French toast, side of eggs, and a coffee came in at about twenty total for the two of us to dine here. The menu has many options, and I would definitely come back if I was in the area to try more of their dining options. I recommend you give it a try if you are in the town of Poughkeepsie. With a name like Alex, I had very high standards and expectations for it! Solid breakfast spot in downtown Poughkeepsie and easy to get to from the Amtrak. My partner and I got the cheddar omelet and the house made corned beef hash with eggs (over easy). Both delicious and fueled our journey across the Empire State Trail Hudson walking bridge (which is about a 15 min walk from Alex's). Service was friendly and attentive and the space itself was spacious and hometown diner-like. I'd return back to try some of their lunch options too! read more

Visiting from Hershey, PA.. we had a delicious spinach salad, topped with the tastiest baked salmon and delicious sweet apples and pears, feta cheese & walnuts & yummy dressing.. delicious double patty burger, tasty home fries.. and the rice pudding was a great dessert to top off a FINE dining experience. Well right away I was afraid that there would be an insane wait and as a party of one, that's kinda deal breaker for me. However, I got seated at the bar immediately while the dining room was an hour wait! As soon as I sat down my server was there to ask if I wanted coffee, which I did. She was even kind enough to give me a small dash of almond milk instead of the creamer they had. The vibe was a bit of a madhouse, but it's mother's day and they obviously are THE brunch spot in downtown Poughkeepsie. The menu was a little restrictive for a vegan, but I was able to make due. If you're a vegetarian who allows Eggs, there's TONS of options. And I modify my plant based diet as Travel allows, so today I allowed myself some eggs. I ordered the 2 egg platter: Poached with Home Frys and multigrain toast (no butter). Plus the coffee, I'd say this was a great brunch for me. read more

Down the block from the Bardovon theater on the corner of Market and Main Street, in Poughkeepsie, sits Alex's restaurant. It's been there for over 110 years. But, it doesn't look it. When you walk in, you get this hygge vibe. Maybe, it's the greeting from behind the register, the way it's set up, or that there's a lot of regulars there. The menu isn't an encyclopedia. Which is nice, it's less confusing that way. The service is excellent and the food delicious and portions not over the top. Tried the corn beef on rye. What a pleasant surprise. Moist, well made corn beef on Jewish rye. Like the way you'd find it in a real deli downtown. My SO ordered a medium rare burger. It came just the way she liked it. We're not big French fry aficionados; but these were great even when they did get a little cold, still palatable. That's a change. If only it was open a later than 4 pm; it would be a great place to go before or after an evening at the Bardovon. read more

Recently, I took a trip to Walkway over Hudson with a couple of friends, checking out the town of Poughkeepsie where we decided to have lunch. This American restaurant is centrally located downtown, looked stately and had an extensive, varied menu. There was also a cozy, inviting ambiance to the place. We were seated indoors immediately, with social distancing being implemented. I decided to go with the Salmon panini, which was served with pesto, onion, spinach, and tomatoes on ciabatta bread. I also had Spinach Feta Fries on the side. This was a tasty sandwich, with the salmon being well seasoned and tender. I loved the taste of the pesto sauce, and the accompanying vegetables added a nice, fresh touch. The Spinach Feta Fries comes with plenty of feta cheese, and fried spinach. This was such a delicious combination, and the fries were delightfully crispy and very potato-y. The feta cheese was wonderfully creamy and potent, while the fried spinach added great flavor. The service was lovely throughout. The waitress and rest of the staff made us feel welcome by their friendliness. Also, the prices were very reasonable and portions were generous. Everything from Alex's Restaurant is good. I really mean that. I've had breakfast and lunch multiple times and I've always been pleased. They offer gluten free bread and wraps so I'm able to enjoy most of the menu! I was in the mood for a burger this time around and ordered something I never tried before. I had the Pimiento burger on gluten free toast. The roasted red peppers, avocado and hummus added an interesting creaminess to the burger. I've never had hummus on a burger but I definitely enjoyed it. The natural cut fries on the side were delicious! I love fries like that. My fiancé had a panini with turkey, bacon and tomato, which looked phenomenal. I think I'll be trying that next time. I'll be back soon. read more

Years later and this place is still my favorite! Very causal Greek diner- like spot but elevated menu items/ingredients and just amazzzzinnnggg food. Breakfast and lunch, they just don't miss! I really liked all the breakfast options I've had- sandwiches, wraps, omelettes and sweet decadent dishes alike. This last visit I ordered a cheese danish on the side and our lovely server Karen recommended it grilled with butter.... life changing in the most dangerous way! The GAF and feta fries are super delicious for lunch. Greek salad was very fresh and quality ingredients. Soups have all been good, too. As if all these recommendations are not enough to tempt they also have a rotating specials menu. Distracted waitress, on the phone 3 times, chatting with the rest of the waitstaff, forgets place settings, forgets some of the incidentals, bill request wasn't promptly handled talking with cashier again. Now for the good news. Alex's has a very interesting menu with many of the all time favorites plus a very unique odering option. Individually priced eggs, fried potatoes, toast and more. You can order each item you want ala-cart, literally building your own breakfast from a vast array of priced side orders, wished more restaurants would do that. Everything we ordered was excellent, the only exception was the Canadian Bacon, it was on the griddle way to long and had dried out. Canadian Bacon is fully cooked and should only be warmed up, anything beyond that, the product suffers as it is thin and loses moisture very quickly. Alex's is very unique in the restaurant biz; the kitchen does an exceptional job but more training for the waitstaff is required to be sure distracted behavior never occurs while waiting on tables. That being said, heck yah, I'd return, Alex's is doing way to many good things and deserves to be supported!!! read more

Today we took a trip to walk at the Walkway Over The Hudson in Poughkeepsie NY but we wanted breakfast first. BUT, not just any breakfast...you know...REAL BREAKFAST! We found this spot and it was great!!! Ok, Ok...why only 4 s ???!!! Because of my eggs...I ordered over medium and they were hard. Eggs are the MAIN thing at a breakfast spot BUT especially over Hash. Now for the rest! The spot looks simple but it has character...old style with home-like wood furniture and benches. Our waitress was Karen and she was awesome...perky, happy, & on the move taking care of everything we needed. The coffee was delish...fresh, hot, & strong. Hubby ordered Eggs Benedict that he loved. I ordered Homemade Hash...amazing...with eggs over medium...came over-hard which kills the hash as the running yolk is needed...and a short stack of traditional pancakes that were AWESOME. It's my favorite spot for an amazing breakfast, lunch or dinner. Daily chalkboard 'printed' specials with something for everyone. The food is great, and everything I've tried has been delicious- from the pancakes to the egg Benedict's. The service is super friendly and warm. My boyfriend loves nothing more than diner breakfast, but his celiac disease can make it hard to find. Today we found the most amazing one as we drove upstate from the city. The gluten feee pancakes were amazing! You could not tell they were gluten free, light and fluffy and flavorful. As was the gluten free toast. I am able to eat all of the things so I also had a buffalo wrap with spinach feta fries that were super delicious. Who knew fried spinach on top of French fries would be so good? Alex's serves diner classics with a beautiful, bright dining room and great service, for affordable prices. I had a great breakfast here with friends on a Sunday morning, but note the closer to noon you get, the more likely you are to have to wait for a table. Street parking was easy to find (hope you parallel park well). We had the pumpkin spice pancakes and two breakfast samplers, coffee, and tea (Harney & Sons if it matters). Everything came out quickly, was well made, and the portions were exactly right. I was glad that things were not too sweet or salty but in that perfect middle.
