I've been visiting this restaurant once or twice a year since my first review, and it never disappoints. Their pollo classico is my absolute favorite--it's always cooked perfectly and full of flavor. Beyond that, the menu offers many other fine dishes to satisfy any craving. The wine list is impressive, with a great selection to pair with every meal. And for dessert lovers, you can't go wrong with their Spanish flan or the rich and creamy tiramisu--both are wonderful finishes to a great dinner. Our second trip to Sótano was just as delightful as our first. Whether in the elegant dining room or seated on the patio out front, the atmosphere was relaxed yet refined. Our server - same on both visits - was friendly and efficient, making recommendations as requested. And her recommended dishes were excellent to a one. Our cocktails were delightful and a great way to stay off our meal. The bread and butter or oil were a nice touch before we started our meal. The salads (Caesar and Mediterranean) each time were fresh, tasty, and plentiful. Our entrees - filet mignon bolognese over pasta, the salmon, and the pork chop - were well made and flavorful with perfect sides. Dessert (crème brûlée and peanut butter pie) was perfectly sweet and not overly heavy. Each was enough to share. We'll be back for another date night again soon! read more

We just got back from a restaurant where we celebrated Father's Day. The place looks very nice: it's clean and has a calm atmosphere. We ordered oysters, prosciutto with watermelon, chickpea-crusted fried calamari, scallops, and two pasta dishes--one with veal and the other with scallops. Plus cocktails and wine. The oysters were magnificent--fresh and delicious. The pasta wasn't particularly memorable, but the scallops turned out to be very tasty... While the dishes weren't extraordinary, they were certainly tasty enough. The most unpleasant--and even awkward--part was that the waiters were in no rush to clear away dirty dishes (and sometimes didn't do it at all), even though the tables there are quite small. You end up eating surrounded by dirty plates and glasses, which certainly doesn't help the impression of the service quality. Even when we asked for the dishes to be cleared, it didn't happen. We were told they would clear everything when they brought our second round of cocktails, but since the cocktails never arrived, the dirty dishes stayed on the table. It's unlikely we'll visit this restaurant again. We live just a seven-minute drive away, but we have no desire to spend over $300 again to eat in an atmosphere reminiscent of a roadside diner. read more

My friend selected this place because of the star reviews. I arrived there for an early get together and dinner. We were greeted immediately and seated. The staff were very friendly and because it wasn't busy took our orders right away. But then things went down from there. We got the calamari and it was ok, but nothing spectacular. Then we ordered scallops and the short rib special. The dinner took one hour and ten minutes to arrive. My scallops were over partially cooked risotto. The scallops were good but the risotto was awful. My friend got the short rib. There was no falling off the bone. I tasted it and it was dry and fatty. The issue might have been a shift change, who knows.... But as a true foodie who does a ton of business dinners, this place unfortunately did not impress me. Sorry guys, you missed the mark on the food. But I'd give my server, a nice lady on the day shift a thumbs up! read more

I'm finally starting to taste food again after too many weeks after having COVID and everything sensed to be bursting with freshness and flavor. The complimentary bread and spread was tasty, crunchy and light. Both the chicken and French onion soups were tasty and not overly salted. However they might have used too many vidalia onions so a tad too sweet. The chicken soup tasted home made. The mediterranean salad was a good mix of fresh greens, a-hearts, eggplant, olives, tomatoes mozzarella and roasted red peppers. The extra chicken for $6 made it a meal. The lobster ravioli had nice sized pieces of lobster but the mushroom sauce was too overpowering and not a good match. The wait staff were friends and efficient. Food 4/5: Sotano's food is pretty solid. - The salads were made with good, fresh ingredients and dressing was OK. I preferred the beet salad to the sotano salad. - the mushroom bisque soup was extremely good. It was our favorite dish - We also got the Octopus appetizer, pasta primavera (not on menu), and swordfish. Overpriced for a mediocre experience. We got the scallop risotto dinner and the peppercorn crusted filet Mignon special. The scallops were very good but the risotto was very bland. It even had a weird aftertaste that was off. The steak was good but tiny for $42 and not peppercorn crusted as advertised. There was a VERY small amount of peppercorn sauce though. The mashed potatoes were also tasteless and bland! The vegetables served with both dishes were the same and fine but included bok choy which was weird? Had lunch at Sotano a while back and it was fine, So, we decided to go back last night and dine. A Sunday during restaurant week, a bit busy, somewhat of a wait, We thought and hoped we would get dinner first rate. Two of us picked the price fixe, We selected the surf and turf, it sounded like a good mix. My sirloin had lots of grizzle, it was tough to cut, I was not the only one, as my friend was in the same rut. We carved with effort to extract what meat we could get at, When finished we sent back 50 percent of the "meat" because it was grizzle and fat. The rest of the meal was satisfactory and fine, But it was so disappointing with the steak, that it ruined our good time. Our server asked us 'how was our meal,' My buddy explained to her how we really did feel. She replied 'I will let the manager know' we sat back and waited, 20 minutes went by, no response, so we asked for our check and vacated. A lesson to be learned, when your meal is not right, Send it back to the kitchen don't wait till the last bite! In all fairness it was busy and possibly understaffed for the night, However, I must admit, the manager should have come over to us to make things right. read more

Inside is a bit tight but the food and staff make up for it. I ordered the dry sea scallops with parmesan risotto. The scallops are cooked to perfection with a char on each side but soft like butter in the middle. Speaking of butter, the dish comes with a lobster butter sauce that is both savory and delicious. My husband got the seafood fra diavolo which is quite spicy (think red chili pepper flakes spicy) but the shrimp is tender and the pasta fresh. The octopus for an appetizer was the perfect starter. This is far and away my favorite restaurant in the area. The ambience is warm and inviting, service is fantastic and personal, and the food is always exceptional. It's fancy enough for a special night out and also easy going enough for lunch with friends. My go-to is the gnocchi with pork ragu, only I swap out for GF pasta. The ragu is consistently excellent. I've also had a bacon burger, roast chicken, and salmon here and all were excellent. There is also a lovely selection of desserts. The crime brûlée is very good as is the tartufo. The owner is usually on site and makes time to say hello and chat with guests. Hospitality is their number one strength followed closely by outstanding food. Can't recommend enough! read more

Last night we went tot Sotqno at 7:30. Our party of five was seated in a back room off the bar. If you get stuck back there know there is little ambience. The bartender was also our waiter, unbeknownst to us. Not sure if this is why everything took so long. He kept apologizing for the wait. But at 9:15 i finally asked to speak with somebody, anybody, who could help us. The rest of the restaurant was half full. The wait staff just kept saying, yeah this is bad. We finally got our food after two hours. It wasn't bad but by that point we all just wanted to leave. The owner/chef came out and blamed the wait on a backed up kitchen. We probably won't be back. This was our first time here. We wanted to try somewhere that we hadn't been before. The building is beautiful, inside and out. The service was friendly and fast. The food was delicious. I had the seafood risotto. My husband had the short rib. Our daughter had the seafood fra diavolo. We also had the chickpea crusted calamari, the octopus, and lobster bisque as appetizers. For dessert, we had the Oreo cheesecake and the mousse cake. They were all delicious, and the presentation made them even more appetizing. The service was honestly the best I've ever had since moving to Dutchess from Westchester. Our waitress was sooo friendly, like...SUPER friendly to the point it was almost comical but my husband and I laughed it off and had zero criticisms as everything came out perfectly. That quality of the food was amazing. I loved the grilled sea bass, the sauce on it was delicious vegetables cooked perfectly, and my husband's steak was very amazing. You could tell they cooked it with an herb butter in a cast iron, simply delicious! Crème brûlée was alright and the burrata appetizer was great as well. Wow Sotano! I was expecting a good meal but wasn't expecting a GREAT meal. If I was in NYC or Philly, Sotano would stand up to any restaurant in either of those cities. Everything that was served tonight was special. The meal started with complimentary warm Olive Bread with a red pepper compound butter. I scarfed down two pieces of this light and airy bread with a generous smear of the butter. Delicious! The Calamari Fritti with a chick pea crust was outstanding. Golden delicious with 2 sauces on the side that was truly not necessary. I dipped them lightly in the marinara sauce but seriously it was delicious by itself. I ate much of this dish on my own. Oysters Fritti was also similarly outstanding. Lightly breaded and fried with a citrus butter sauce served in their shells. To be honest these oysters were not meaty like I generally want them to be but the sauce put it over the top. This was a special they should make a part of there permanent menu because I'd definitely want to get this again. I'd bet there are others that would want to order this. Also from the appetizer section was a mussels app. This dish was quite frankly overshadowed by the calamari and oysters but not by much. The mussels themselves were kinda small but again the sauce here was outstanding. If I had some bread left over I would have dipped it in the sauce that remained. My dinner entree was originally supposed to be a Short Rib special but they ran out so I selected a Duck Breast that I'm not sure isn't the best Duck Breast I've ever had. Check the picture here, the portion of this dish was hearty. The duck skin was pan seared medium with a crispy skin sliced and served over a bed of asparagus on the side of a portion of sweet potato string fries. This looked amazing and it tasted amazing as well. The duck meat here was sooooo tender. If this was a second to the short rib, I really need to come back and try the short rib tomorrow night. Hehe. A dinner companion had the Crispy Mediterranean Seabass that is shown in the pictures which has to be the most generous portion I've ever seen. I could have ordered the seabass and felt it was the best entree as well. Finally I have to say the service was not only attentive but truly old fashioned. There something about the attention to the customer here that only exists in the five star restaurants in the big cities. In addition to my server, no less than 3-4 people dropped by to check on my party, including the Chef and Owner Jamie(I am aware he goes by another name as well). It's been a very long time since I've had the chef come out to greet and check on me. I'd bet that for most people, this is true as well. Sotano, this practice is endearing so please keep it. On this occasion, while we understand it was busy with a large party, we felt that the service was lacking to an extent. We had a 6:30pm reservation and were seated on arrival. We were given bread and water and then had to wait almost a half an hour before anyone came back to the table to take a drink or food order. Once ordered, we waited another 30 minutes for the appetisers to arrive. We felt as though we were not important enough and were a burden. All in all, we were there for two hours and had two courses.
