First, gotta talk about the bagel breakfast sandwich, comes with your choice of bagel/cheese/and toppings (schmeres). I got the jalapeno cheddar bagel with egg, cheddar cheese and a smoky pepper schmere. This was the BEST BAGEL, and by far one of the BEST BREAKFAST SANDWICHES I have ever had. Capital letters can't do this justice, eating this made my week. Smokey, salty, creamy, it sang a song that I will look forward to until next week when I order this again. My coffee was absolutely brilliant. One of my favorite things with espresso is something sweet, usually a berry does the trick. Raspberry is my go to, because I don't use them often at home. Great coffee...excellent coffee shop in downtown Salem. Went to IKE several times while we were visiting Salem based upon strong Yelp ratings. It did not disappoint! I got a vanilla latte with an apricot scone. The vanilla latte was pretty good but my favorite was definitely the scone. I was debating between the apricot one or the bacon & cheese one but ultimately decided I wanted something sweet to go with my coffee. I definitely made the right choice but I will prob come back to try the other one soon. The ambiance was perfect. It wasn't too crowded since I came on a weekday but there was a lot of space inside and a few tables outside. The tables inside were pretty spaced out too so that gave me some peace of mind. Cute coffee shop with lots of space to enjoy your coffee. We didn't try and pastries, opting only for coffee. I had a house brew $2. Tried Black Butte Gold and it had a slightly bitter, peppery taste. Not a fan. The Rutas del Inca was slightly less bold and more enjoyable. The kid had a vanilla bean blended $3.75. We thought it would be like Starbucks or Coffee Bean and Tea. It was neither. It tasted like a sweet, thick vanilla shake. The staff are very pleasant. read more

I really like the feel of this place! It's very spacious and feels like an old theater. Theres plenty of seating and it's not jammed and clustered so you don't feel like a sardine. Plenty of tables for studying or a few couches for conversing. There's the big main room but there's plenty of side rooms and tables along the hallways as well. The coffee was great too. If you are in downtown Salem and need a coffee break, I'd recommend IKE Box! We have often stopped at Sisters for their coffee and were happy to see their roasts at IKE Box. Among the many menu choices, I ordered a cappuccino (my go-to drink) and a blueberry lemon scone. Both were excellent. My drinking partner enjoyed a fine berry smoothie. The space (a funeral home in its prior life, I think) is grand in scale, unique, and comfortable, plus a friendly staff--all of which makes it a favorite of ours! read more

Most people have never had good coffee and dont know what it is, so dont mind the positive reviews from starbucks customers. The beans they use are good although they dont know how to make a pourover correctly. Nor pull a proper shot of espresso. When he made my pourover he agreed the grind was too fine and the result was overextracted. But balked at making another because he would get in trouble for wasting beans. read more

I really like Sister's coffee and I was pumped to find IKE uses their roasts. I went with a drip coffee and enjoyed it well enough. I thought a drip coffee was a bit too expensive. I am not sure if IKE offers pour overs but I do not remember it being an option. The space is great. Very big room that can host events. Wifi was easy to connect to and I had no issues with it. The open space did get a little loud for work but my headphones helped. Parking was ok to find but I did have to pay for it. I am less likely to return to IKE since I could not find free parking. Overall, it is good they have Sister's and a lot of space to sit and work. However, I wish they had pour over options and things were a bit less expensive. read more

Coffee is one of many panda weaknesses. How convenient that some of my friends are right in the middle of taking that dreaded bar exam in the particular state they chose. It was my own bar exam experience from earlier this year that turned me into a caffeinated panda in the first place. I walked in around 11:30 on a Monday, and I probably saw two or three customers the entire time. Not gonna complain, since that means room to sit and faster service at the counter. IKE Box now offers several selections of Sisters Coffee, and being a big fan of dark roasts, I got a 12 oz. cup of the Black Butte Gold ($1.50). Just as advertised, it had a pleasing, rich, full-bodied feel. Excellently prepared. But wait! They had these s'mores treats in rice krispies form -- but using what I believe was Golden Grahams cereal instead (or a generic brand, not sure). Mini chocolate chips are scattered throughout this one, while partially melted marshmallows (some melted all the way, others still intact) held everything together. Although it would have been better fresh (it had been sitting in the display case for some time, I'd guess), it cured my sweet tooth just fine. And there's nothing wrong with intact room temperature chocolate chips. Unless you want to see a messy panda. A cheerful, positive person ran the register. Always nice to see that. My rating stays the same for now. read more

This place gets 5 stars for interior decor and ambiance. Quite roomy. A great mixture of chairs/tables and couches. The coffee bar looks good, as does their food selection (the typical things you'd find in a coffeehouse display case: scones, cookies, muffins, etc.) Why only 4 stars? One, there is a 75 cent coffee refill. I could possibly get on board with this, but not when the coffee has been sitting out for so long and is almost at room temperature. However, these things happen, and a customer must be understanding of reality and physics, but the business should also take care to ensure they are serving hot and fresh coffee. They either need controls or procedures instituted. The other downer to the refill price is that there was then a line of several people. I do not want to have to queue up again just to deliver my 75 cents. They need a more convenient way of collecting this charge. Forgive my complaining, but one other thing that seems to be out of place here: the coffee service itself is awkwardly scattered: you dispense your coffee at one table, then you need to go to another stand for both creme and sugar, but its where everyone is throwing out their trash. Its nasty to see everyone's trash passing by while you're trying to prepare your coffee. This really is an unacceptable setup for such a great place with tons of room. Owner or manager: it may have been like this for a long time, but it sucks. Please seek to change it. Its very awkward. Its worse than awkward. You can do much better with a little thought. Looking around, all the patrons seem happy and satisfied. (Yes, they were able to somehow summon the inner strength to overcome the awkward coffee service. LOL God, I'm a complainer! Sorry everybody. I just like to see every business realize its full potential. Yes, I care too much! Is that a crime??? LOL) I will be back. (Not that they really want me. I've been taking up a table for well over an hour waiting for my GF to finish an activity inside one of the rooms here. Sorry, Ike's. I will be a better customer next time.) Located in what seems to be an old reclaimed house, the IKE Box has been around for a long time, and for good reason. Well, good reasons: - The staff is very friendly, and is always willing to help when you don't know what to order. They're more like bartenders than baristas, meaning they know a lot about the coffee they're making, and are willing to work off the script and make something that sounds good. It usually is. - Their coffee is great. However, I have a pretty low bar when is comes to the taste of coffee. It's similar to Starbucks, which is a definite compliment. - The food is pretty good. I recommend trying either one of their quiches for breakfast or a burrito for lunch. Both are light yet filling. - The space. If you're looking for a place to plop down and do some work, skip the small crowded Starbucks. This place has two conference rooms that you can reserve, and multiple side rooms with couches where you can work in peace. Besides that, the space is HUGE. You'll have no problem finding a comfy place to sit for awhile and do your thing. All in all, I love this place, and am glad that it's become a Salem institution. read more

Salem's coffee is good, but not great. At the time of me writing this there is one other joint with a better promise of coffee (Clockworks) but their training leaves much to be desired and sadly the shop does not live up to the much appreciated and glorified name of Stumptown. So, the Ike Box is it. This place serves Alann Brothers Coffee, which though good is very common in the Mid-Valley and therein it finds mediocrity. However the Ike box rises above the other shops in the area with its good training and with it's fantastic locally made organic ingredients. The Ike Box also has tried hard to maintain an old-style look, maintaining older furniture to fit with the age and history of the building as well as the painting, look, and feel of the place. Walking into the Ike Box would be the same 50 years ago as it is today. Add all this to the fact that the Ike Box is ran by a non-profit organization supporting local low-SES high schoolers, and I think we come to a great Cafe in downtown Salem. read more

Having seen first hand through my own life the positive impact they have on youth, I love going here. I know from working here that Ike Box works hard to put customers first and meet their needs. My sister was in town and wanted to grab some coffee before we headed over to the Saturday market. We walked over and it's an old building, but cute interior. Their fridge machine thing blows out hot air which made waiting in line kind of uncomfortable, but the wait wasn't too long. They have a few tables outside which was nice to enjoy our coffee.
