Unlike other sushiyas offering cheaper domestic or European ingredients, Akira sources virtually all of its premium seafood straight from Japan. We came for the 6:00 dinner seating. Immediately seated by friendly staff in comfy seats, then Johnny helped us pick out the perfect sake bottle from a well curated list. Wine, beer and soft drinks are also available. The 18 course meal was utterly mind blowing. Started with a foie gras appetizer studded with fresh flowers, beautiful as well as melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Grilled abalone with liver sauce, a premium offering not often seen around here, was rich with umami flavor. Wagyu beef sandwich was so tender and flavorful. Of the nigiri course, my favorite pieces were the hairy crab and uni sourced from Hokkaido, plump autumn sanma (pike mackerel), and shima aji (striped jackfish). They didn't stint on the uni! We enjoyed generous dollops of uni including purple and another ultra-creamy type (whose name escapes me now). Premium melon and hojicha pudding dessert was the perfect ending to this magnificent feast. Sushi Akira is less than a year old, but already a major contender among top NY omakase restaurants. My advice is to reserve seats on Resy before they get too booked up. Two seatings of 12 people per evening (6:00PM and 8:15PM) are available. I can't wait to return for more of Chef Nikki's seasonal delicacies.

The dinner course itself is an impressive amount of food and sushi for the price, I believe now $160 pp. you start off with a few appetizers, seafood based and usually at least one fried that built anticipation. The fish itself was many typical of most omakase but excellent- fresh, rich and paired great with rice that was cooked and seasoned well. The chefs are very engaging and fun to chat with on just about anything- chef Satoshi has great experiences to tell! At the end there is an add on menu depending on the day's availability with some rare options like kamatoro. Have been multiple times and each time has been consistent. Each piece of omakase, and the breaks of non-sushi servings kept building on your palate until the final BBQ toro. Some had spice, some had texture, every one had unique flavor that showed off the fish. The hand rolls were perfect hand rolls and not the cones you might be used to.
