This place is so hip and busy!! I had to wait about 30 minutes to get a seat and yes, it was worth it. Very cozy atmosphere but lively at the same time. It does make you feel like you are in Japan. Service was great and quick with servers checking on you often. Love the tapas menu.
Chill and cozy space, service was great, food was good, what more can you need! Little pricey but the location is great. My favorite was the garlic fried rice as I don't eat seafood but my friends said the sushi was good. Had a great time!
Visited on a friday night and arrived about 5 minutes before the opening at 5pm and there was already a line out the door! Even though the restaurant was packed, service was not slow at all. The food came out quick and everything was delicious. Get the kimchi cream udon. It was absolutely delicious. We ordered other items too, the beef tongue and tako wasa were very good. I would skip the chicken wings. I definitely loved the izakaya vibe of the place and would visit again if im in the area
There's a reason why people have willpower for the hours-long wait here on weekends. There are many restaurants with lines that I can't say are worth waiting on, but this restaurant is worth every minute and every ounce of energy left for the wait. I've taken a lot of friends here over the course of 10 years, and without fail, every one of them has walked out mindblown--and why wouldn't they?! The wait times have gotten better over the years (probably because people are waiting for the restaurant next door), but the food and drinks here are still top-notch. Staff is always great, and they all work so efficiently. I am generally a fan of izakayas, but there are very few that offer plates that are designed to be shareable, and this is one of the reasons the food here is so enjoyable in a small group setting. I am obviously biased and think they can do no wrong, but some of my staples that have stood the test of time: Kimchi cream udon, avocado tofu salad, salmon sashimi tacos, and the kani cream croquettes. I was so excited when they opened an outpost in Flushing years ago, but sadly it shuttered during COVID. It is definitely small and there is always going to be a wait, so don't be those people who come in with a huge group during prime time because they like to move (getting customers in and out) very fast.
I've been coming to Izakaya Mew for years and it's still great! The food is solid and the ambiance is that of a casual bar/izakaya. It can be a little tricky to find as it has a small door on the street level and is located down a flight of stairs on 35th. They have a variety of drinks such as frozen kirin beer and Japanese inspired cocktails. For food, they have a large variety of Japanese classics from sushi, skewers, fried dishes, and noodles/rice. My favorites here are the Omu Soba which has some tasty noodles inside and the salmon don which has some sashimi and sauce over rice!
A hidden gem quite literally downstairs in a basement type setting! Everything we got was comforting and tasty. Chicken karaage for the appetizer although it doesn't come with sauce so we asked for spicy aoli for a $1 extra. The yellow tail carpaccio is fresh, light and a good start to our meal. The kimchi cream udon had more of a cheesy taste than kimchi, but was a comforting dish. The sushi rolls we order were great quality, I liked the double hamachi roll the best because there was more texture. This place can get busy during dinner time so best to have a reservation. Service is very efficient and quick. I would love to come back here to try more foods and cocktails next time I go to NYC!

The creamy kimchi udon was ok. It didn't feel like one dish, but tasted good. The una don was great. Good sauce and blend of supporting veggies to enhance the taste. Service was super quick. Everything was rapid fire: order taken, food comes out quick, water gets replinished before asking, plates are taken the moment they are finished, and check comes immediately after asking for it. Interior was cramped and loud. Really fitting as many tables as they can in the space. I saw others mentioning to make reservations. I went without one and got lucky. There was a table opening 30 minutes out. Would recommend having one, but you can definitely try walking in. First come first serve basis Overall, solid spot for great tasting food. Great for smaller parties of 2, but expect it to be tight with spacing
Honestly, I really enjoyed my time at Izakaya Mew. I love the underground vibe because it gives it that cozy dim vibe. The servers were pretty attentive and funny, they'd check on us regularly, somehow managing to convince us to get even more items based on what we liked. As a big fan of seafood, I really enjoyed the Scallop Uni Butter Scallop and the Shishamo Fritters. A lot of the items didn't feel heavy which is always a plus with Izakayas, and allowed us to order and try even more items on the menu. Definitely the perfect place to come with a group of friends after work !
This is what dreams are made. Quality fish, so much flavor, unique and creative dishes. The restaurant is so unassuming, as it's downstairs in a building, the sign is modest, but when we entered it was filled with locals. A good sign! Started with miso, seaweed salad. The miso was so flavorful! Gyoza, light and absolutely delicious Yellowtail carpaccio- the sauce I could drink it, so good! They only had 4 rolls on the menu so we got one of each, and let me tell you, best rolls I've ever had, each one was unique and different, and amazing! We also shared a pork belly bowl and a una don (eel) bowl, and again both were incredible. Perfectly cooked eel and pork belly, the sauce on both, delicious, and the rice!!! The rice is like crack, soft and sweet, like nothing I've ever had. I'm from out of state, but let me tell you, I will eat here every time I come to NYC!
We ordered the beef and rice, shrimp tempura sushi, and kimchi creamy udon. I can't eat the udon due to allergies but it was definitely a hit in our group as we took two plates home. The dishes here are definitely economical. The food overall was good aside from the udon nothing was jaw dropping. Would come again for the kiwi cocktail and to try another noodle dish. The service was alright - wish she recommended other allergy friendly dishes. Ambiance is fun and the underground location adds more to the charm.

Got the following dishes: - Hotate (seared scallop) carpaccio (4.5/5) - Chicken nanban (3.5/5) - Kimchi cream udon (4/5) - Mew special roll (4.5/5) - Mochi ice cream (3.5/5) Food came out very quickly, and service was good! Since the restaurant was very busy and had a wait from the moment we entered and left, this is definitely a restaurant you'd spend 1 - 1.5 hr max at with the high table turnover (so avoid if you want a quiet date night). Overall, Izakaya Mew has been a reliable staple for years and will likely continue to be with its great food quality and lively ambiance. (4.5/5)
Came here as I couldn't get a table at the restaurant next door. Was pleasantly surprised to find this hidden gem in the middle of the city with decent pricing and good service. I got the chicken nanban set which came with a miso soup, tofu on the side, rice and the fried chicken. All was very tasty and throughly enjoyed. Will definitely come here again!
the only redeeming quality of this place is the price and the vibes. i've gone a couple times and all the dishes i've tried are just okay. the katsudon is very average imo somewhat comparable to hmart food court katsudon lol. i remember the pork belly being super fatty, the kalbi being really tough to chew, and the salmon tataki was forgettable. i've also tried the kimchi cream udon, the omu soba, the sweet and sour ribs, and the salmon don (not pictured) and also thought those dishes were very average. the portion sizes here are good for the price and for the area, but i definitely would not wait for a table. i think it's a good pre-game/post-game place like i'm sure the food would taste delicious if i was wasted but it is not great for just dinner.

Made a reservation at 7pm on a Wednesday but didn't get seated until 7:15pm. It was pretty crowded with a decent amount of people waiting and I had to see them ask the previous table to leave lol. The ambiance was pretty lively with a lot of people talking and festive drinks. For the food, the kimchi cream udon was the best. Very creamy and a good balance of sweetness and tartness. Everything else was just alright. The tuna crispy rice had extremely crispy rice, the sushi wasn't amazing and tasted pretty average, and I wouldn't recommend the katsudon since it tasted pretty bland. The take me home drink was alright - I thought it would taste sweeter but I could still taste the alcohol pretty strongly. read more

Creamy kimichi Udon 5/5 - great flavor, noodles were right just right. Perfect item to share or have left overs to take home. Yellowtail Carpaccio 5/5: Quality of fish was high along with a variety of toppings and ponzu sauce. Portion of fish was big and worth the price. Items together for a single portion are very filling. Ambience was really nice and spacious for a downstairs area. Seating was quick and servers were very attentive. read more

We tried a couple different rolls, a fatty tuna appetizer, and an udon dish. The best roll was a summer special roll that we got, but the double hamachi was a close second. I went back again and tried the kimchi cream udon, and it was really, really good. The noodles were cooked perfectly, and the sauce was rich and flavorful. Unfortunately, the shrimp were horribly overcooked, which was disappointing. I also got a taste of my friend's tonkotsu ramen. The broth was rich, creamy, and absolutely delicious. After one spoonful, I knew I'd be going back for my own bowl. read more

The apps were so good. Loved the carpaccio and the croquettes. The fish, especially tuna on the sushi tasted super fresh! My favorite roll was hands down the volcano roll, would get that again every time. The only thing that wasn't great was the mochi ice cream read more

Izakaya Mew is a really good place to hangout with friends. Their appetizers are good and noodles are a good amount to share with others. Employees are also very attentive to your requests and service is great. It gets crowded quick but definitely worth an experience. read more
Walked in on a Saturday night for a party of 5 around 6pm. Definitely really busy inside - they said it would be a 20-30 min wait and we waited about 20 mins before they had a table ready for us. Note that the restaurant is a little hard to find as it's downstairs with a dark door leading down. They have a pretty big menu with a variety of sushi and Japanese izakaya style food. The portions are on the small side here but food is very tasty. There's always a 1.5 hour seating limit during busy times, so also something else to keep in mind. read more

I've been meaning to try Izakaya MEW for a while after seeing it all over TikTok. It can be a bit tricky to find since it's downstairs and right next to well-known spots like Cho Dang Gol, but once you're in, the energy is undeniable. The restaurant was super lively, even on a Monday night, and I was glad I had made a reservation because there was already a wait. The food was decent--nothing mind-blowing--but I definitely want to go back to try the kimchi udon that everyone else seemed to be ordering. Overall, great vibes and a fun place to hang out. read more

I had a delivery order from this excellent and popular Japanese restaurant. I ordered a Nigiri Lunch Set, Yellowtail Carpaccio and Saba Shioyaki Teishoku (grilled mackerel). Everything was delicious. The standout was the grilled mackerel which was perfectly charred. The sushi was varied and fresh tasting. The yellowtail carpaccio was nicely seasoned with a dipping sauce on the side. Miso soup and salad were included and were both very good. Packing was well done and delivery was fast. Highly recommended especially for a very tasty grilled mackerel...a real treat...next time I will order two! read more
It's been a few years since I've dined at Izakaya MEW but it's just as delicious as it was like almost a decade ago. It's maybe little pricier than I remember it being (as in price to portion size ratio) but the food is good so I'd still rec it. It's great tapas style for sharing with groups. Our group of 5 had a Monday evening reservation at 7:30 pm & was shown to a spacious table by the back. We asked our server how many dishes they recommended we get for our group size & they suggested about 7. Our greedy eyes had already picked out way more than 7 dishes to try though haha. -karaage: juicy & flavorful -yaki cheese potato: honestly by the description I was a little skeptical but it's tasty. The yuzu mayo adds a slight zing of freshness to the cheese & fries -kani cream croquettes: were alright, mostly a soft cream flavor & kind of forgettable. Would skip this next time -kimchi cream udon: was tasty but I think it tastes more like a gochujang cream udon, I don't recall any bites of kimchi (but I might have missed it, having split the dish 5 ways) -okonomiyaki: one of my faves! Came out in a sizzling hot skillet & was very flavorful & crunchy -tan shioyaki: was surprised at how good the beef tongue was here, it was well seasoned & the grilled char flavor really gave it extra depth of flavor. Another fave after the okonomiyaki -grilled corn: solid, combination with miso was interesting -saba /mackerel: my friends wanted this & I think they liked it. I'm more particular about how I like mackerel so I wasn't a huge fan but it's definitely very traditional Japanese fare -kani oshizushi: we added on a winter special dish after we inhaled the other food & it was very refreshing. The citrus ponzu was great at highlighting the crab. Honestly we could have eaten way more but we had other plans. We ended the meal very satiated, the food was tasty. The staff was also great, they were very attentive at refilling our water glasses & coming by to check in on us. Definitely recommend it & am left craving some of the dishes haha. Also I didn't get it this time but years ago I really loved the Kiwitachi cocktail! For the people who like their alcohol to taste like juice (it me). read more

Great menu, high quality food, and yummy cocktails! While the food was fantastic, I have to dock a star for the ambiance here. It was cute and reminiscent of a classroom with all the folding chairs, but the tables are way too close together (we could overhear the entirety of the conversation of the people next to us; even worse, when the guy next to us squeezed a lemon, the juice splashed on my face :') ) and the inside of the restaurant is SUPER loud. Staff are very efficient but also impersonal, so really no redeeming points for the atmosphere there. To talk to my friend the entire evening we were basically screaming at each other over the table. By the end of the dinner she and I both had ringing ears and throats coarse from the yelling. TLDR: good food but much too loud and packed. Eat and leave as fast as you can. read more
I love me a good yakitori spot and this place did not disappoint. First, love the vibe. It was downstairs, below street level and the dark (albeit clean) look gave it a similar feel to some spots in Japan. I got the chicken, lotus, shishito, and shrimp kushikatsu (it's a little strange there is a 4 skewer minimum). They were all pretty good except the shrimp. It was tiny and couldn't really taste it. Also, the coating was more like tempura versus a traditional katsu breading. The style depends on the restaurant but I prefer the more flaky panko style. The yakitori was excellent. I got the beef and tebasaki (chicken wings), and wasabi chicken. All cooked perfectly and delicious. I added rice balls and seaweed salad to round it out and it did not disappoint. It seems nowadays every yakitori place is pricey and this was no different. But if you're willing to spend a little, this spot was worth going. read more
Great spot for when you're craving Japanese comfort food or izakaya in general. My friend and I got the following to share: -fried oysters: taste the best when it's still warm and the side of salsa is refreshing. -kimchi cream udon: really good and not too heavy -omu soba: this is quite filling with the soba noodle stir fry mixed when veggies and pork belly slices wrapped in an omelette -kara age: taste like a standard kara age Ambiance is great and a good spot to catch up with friends. make a reservation!! my partner and i were looking for a quick bite and stumbled upon this place next to a popular korean restaurant. the wait was around 30 mins with no reservation on a sunday night. Food was amazing, really good prices for NYC, it is slightly cramped but it's doable. Keep in mind this restaurant is in a basement so be ready for stairs. the decor was very cute and cozy. all food was great and had good flavor, would probably skip on the ramen next time. Amazing ambiance for a quick HH with a couple friends. Busy on a weeknight but not crowded/claustrophobic. Super quick service, all of our dishes came out fast since they're trying to turn tables over as quickly as possible. The Kimchi Udon was my favorite dish, salty and creamy. The Empire Roll was also great. The Agedashi Tofu was refreshing and light. I could have passed on the Yosenabe Hot Pot though. read more

Everything was so good from here! My friend and I came on a weekday evening and it was SO packed. We ordered a bunch of different items to share: - Chicken Nanban: loved the egg salad on top of the chicken karaage! It was super creamy and added a depth of flavor and texture - Age Dashi Tofu: surprisingly delicious. The tofu was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside while soaking up all the deliciousness from the broth - Yaki Udon: very yummy! I've had yaki udon that was overly oily but this one was very light with lots of different veggies and meat - Salmon Tataki: a very light and refreshing dish, definitely recommend! - Gyoza: it was good, but nothing too special, would skip and get something more unique instead! Overall, everything was delicious and I wish I had a bigger stomach for more food (lol)! However, it was super lively and loud so it was difficult to converse - I felt like I was constantly shouting on top of my lungs in order to talk to my friend but the liveliness definitely made you feel like you're in an authentic izakaya in Japan. read more
Tried out Izakaya MEW randomly on a Saturday. We didn't have a reservation but randomly stumbled onto a line once they opened for dinner. We were seated right away and the food came out pretty quick^^ It was a pretty trendy place with lots of seating and enough space on the table for a bunch of dishes. My wife and I shared some tacowasa, wings, cow tongue, and our favorite, the creamy kimchi udon (MUST TRY!!!). We also had a couple of rolls. They were good but a bit small on the filling. The portion on everything was pretty good otherwise and we came out stuffed. Price was about average for NYC izakaya dishes. We'd definitely come back again for the creamy kimchi udon! read more
I was beyond impressed with this place, and I feel like that is a hard thing to do with the milllliiiiooonnnssssss of yummy food placed in NY! Truly WOW! There were three of us, and we were SO hungry! We arrived and there was about an hour wait. This was totally worth the wait and we headed to grab a drink before. Vibes: - You walk down a flight of stairs and have this basement feel - It is dark but not like date night dark. Been here twice, during lunch time. The food portion are ok, service is good and attentive, place is small but very unique, specially the bathroom plumbing. The food is good, with good flavors, the only thing that was only so so was the pork belly, not much seasoning if you don't have the sauce on top, but than the sauce was a little on the sweet side. read more

I recently went back to get their chicken nanban and their kimchi udons and it's still delicious! It does get very heavy however because it's fried and lots of cream. It's quite busy inside and can get loud. read more

It depends. I suggest come the moment they open for dinner, the earlier the better. It's a popular place and if you go around dinner time, it could be as long as 3 hrs. And you have to wait inside when it's near your estimate time and the experience…

They do not, but they have plenty of smaller dishes for sampling.
Is this establishment wheelchair accessible?
Unfortunately there are no ramps and the restaurant is only accessible to my knowledge from down a pretty steep thin flight of stairs.
