For appetizer, We went adventurous and got the monkfish liver salad - first thought the portion is very small. But to my shock, the sauce is so delicious-- strong, vinegar-y, and spicy - my favorite flavors. Monkfish liver is fishy but very good. I ended up drinking the sauce Entrees: Braised rib massaman, as everyone recommends - best massaman I've ever had so far. Roti is crispy, perfect to go with the curry. seasonal mango branzino - fillets come off of the spine. surprisingly delicious! A little but not too sweet and also savory; again, strong flavor but it works. Better than I expected. E-san hotpot - light in consistency but flavorful dashi. Soup is very nice. The inside is so floral and vibrant and the menu is simple, highlighting some of their signature must-try dishes and classics.For drinks, we started with the My Summer and Thai Ice Tea. We liked both! The Crying Tiger steak was grilled really well, paired with a tangy dipping sauce. The Keaw Tod were like fried wontons. I did like the crunch but wish there was more filling and more than 6 pieces, so for $12.95, I'd pass on this one. The Short Rib Massaman is the star dish; a coconut curry with a big chunky piece of meat served with flaky roti bread. It was really flavorful and tender. The Salmon Clay Pot had nice fragrant garlic rice and a fresh salmon filet. However, the salmon rice tasted more Japanese than Thai. I was at this unique restaurant a good while ago. As per the name "Isankaya," they are a fun mix of Isan, or Northeastern Thai food, and Japanese izakaya, or bar food. The menu is mostly a mix of dishes from all over Thailand, though only a handful are from Isan. Otherwise, a handful of them were fusion, and there is a small amount of Japanese dishes. The inside was bright from the red neon, but not too much so, thankfully. The woman serving was very friendly, and while they didn't get too crowded as it was very late when I went, there was still a handful of people there. As it was late, I didn't bother getting a drink, though they do have a small selection of beers along with wine, cocktails, and plenty of soft drinks. My appetizer was one of the more interesting dishes I had in recent memory. This was the $13.95 E-San Ankimo, with raw monkfish liver in chili lime dressing with cilantro, culantro, shallot, and toasted rice powder. There were 6 reasonably sized pieces of the raw liver with the spice mixture on the bottom and a small amount of greens. If there is a dish on the menu that perfectly represents this restaurant's name, I would say it's this one. The meat on the plate is ankimo, a Japanese delicacy, and the spice mix is what you find commonly in the Isan/Lao version of larb. The dish had a bit of spice, crunch, and a mild amount of heat, which was an interesting pairing to the delicate and slightly fishy and creamy ankimo. This was delicious, and I would go back to get this alone. I went with one of the few Japanese options as my main dish. This was the Salmon Clay Pot for $28.95, listed as seared salmon served with garlic fried rice topped with fried garlic and ikura. The vessel was presented at the table, and I opened it, revealing the contents. There was plenty of salmon inside, which was buttery and properly cooked. The garlic fried rice had a light crisp to it and plenty of garlic flavor, though some of that was probably from the extra fried garlic. The ikura added some pops of saltiness to this dish. This was also tasty, though I would likely try a Thai dish next time. I can see why the reviews are so high for this place just from my abridged visit. I would definitely go back. read more

Arrived around 6:00 on a Saturday night and was quickly shown to a table; by 6:30 every table was taken, always a good sign. Loved the warm welcome, festive vibe, and cute decorations right away. Their generous happy hour extends from noon until 7:30PM every day including table service. I loved my purplish lychee martini, a nice blend of tart and sweet flavors. Dinner was delicious and portion sizes were generous. The salmon clay pot was incredible--garlicky fried rice with a perfect smoky wok flavor, topped with juicy grilled salmon and fresh ikura. Partner's crab fried rice had lots of fresh crab along with eggs, fried garlic, shallot, cilantro and seafood sauce - so flavorful. Spicing is complex and superb; my mouth was happy but not slammed by overly aggressive flavors. There's live jazz on Saturdays and Fridays, which elevated the vibe even more. Things to Know: Service was on the slower side (at least when I visited) so allow some extra time if you're on a tight schedule. This place is a little different from other local Thai restaurants. I'll guess it's probably a bit more authentic, less Americanized, though I'm not sure about that. We went for lunch once with some friends, over the summer. They had no AC on a hot July day, and no ice for the water. This visit was just my husband and me, out for dinner before the blizzard! We're pescatarian. They have a couple of seafood choices and a couple of vegetarian choices. They note with a star the spicy items - as we discovered, even those not marked are pretty hot! We asked for the papaya salad mild, as my husband is not a fan of spicy. It still had a good kick to it, but he liked it anyway. I liked it, too, not so much lettuce as many other places. Just the shredded papaya, edamame, which is also different from other places. We agreed that it was better. Decor is interesting. There are cloths suspended from the ceiling, like the inside of a tent, sort of, and pretty Asian decoration all over the walls. It's a small restaurant, maybe 10 or so tables, mostly two-tops. For entrees, I ordered the green curry with tofu. Comes with the standard white rice. It was a thinner broth than other places, more like a real soup. There were eggplant , red peppers, basil, and a delicious kick of spice. It wasn't marked as spicy on the menu, but it was, and I was pleased. SO good! My husband ordered something we've never seen before, a clay pot with only rice and mushrooms. It came in what looked like a squat tagline, the clay pot. It wasn't the least bit spicy and he gobbled it up! I recommend this place, as long as you have a tolerance for spice. Missed this spot once because I walked by for dinner and it was pretty quiet so I wrote it off (but to be fair it's a little tucked away) Am I glad I took a shot. Started with the roti and mmmmm you don't see the oil on it but your fingers get oily touching it. Means the flavor is sealed in there. Sauce on the side and hot (temp wise) and a touch spicy which I like. Then the crab fried rice-they present the big lumps of crab on the side and you mix in yourself instead of sometimes restaurants could mix it while stir frying the rice. Really shows they're putting in real portions in there and not skimping out. A little bland for me (but fyi Ive been told I have a tolerate for strong flavors so ok for be is prob too salty for some). The fried shallots/garl adds good texture. Does come with a sauce in the side if you to add flavor but I like to taste my crab so I only tried it and didn't use it much. Would come back. Heard about this place opening up and after browsing through Yelp and seeing all the pictures I decided to go celebrate my birthday here. I was so surprised by how good the food was. We had ordered so many things to try and they all were deliciousss! It seems that they make everything from scratch from hot pot soup and sauces which is undeniably impressive. The only complaint is that the portions are a bit small compared to the price. Inside the restaurant is decorated as Thai cozy dining room style with Thai stuff and Thai movies posters featuring Japanese decor. This place is owned and run by Thai people so the service fits my style perfectly lol. I have been back here twice in one month and I don't live in the city.
