It's a Wednesday night and my friends and I need a place to have dinner to wrap up the fun night we just had at the Cigar Club down the street. I hopped on Yelp and found IL Castello and thought this should work. I told the person who grabbed my call we will be there in 30 minutes but we were having too much fun and didn't wrap up at the Cigar club. Not only did the owner keep the restaurant open for us past 9pm, but once we arrived to our surprise this spot is amazing. It's the exact quality of Italian food my friends and I would have chosen. All 5 of us are business owners. I had the Dover Sole pictured in this review being filetted for my enjoyment. Everyone's dish was amazing from appetizers to dessert. I highly recommend IL Castello. The owner is very attentive and is intentional about providing memorable hospitality experiences. My friends and I agreed to return here next month. read more

My friend and I had lunch at the heated patio last Wednesday and had a wonderful experience all around. The back area felt safe (closed from the elements but still open air) with heaters and tables spaced apart. Lenny provided exceptional service, from recommending a delicious and affordable bottle of wine to splitting our shared entrees onto individual plates in the kitchen. It felt like a professional Italian home cooked dining experience with delicious foods all around. We ended our meal with a tasty cappuccino and homemade limoncello. Il Castello is just great. The owner who also takes orders is the quintessential restaurant guy. He is charming and knowledgeable about his food, he knows when to be around and chat and when not to and he really does make the place what it is. The food is great, all of it. TLDR: AVOID the valet service like the plague! Lots of misses in this restaurant, but when you find a good dish it's really good. Order wisely! Overall rating: B- We made a reservation for 8 people for Sunday at 1pm via OpenTable. They advertise valet parking outside but actually finding/getting anyone to help you with your car is a NIGHTMARE. Twice when dropping off the car AND picking up the car, the valet looked my friend in the face and walked away! Both times I needed to go back into the restaurant to ask for the valet. My friend basically parked the car herself. All we needed was to give and get the key from a surly employee! If we didn't have someone with difficulties walking in our group we would've definitely parked further away to avoid this nonsense! The ambiance was pretty nice. Some of the food was better than others. Here's the break down: APPETIZERS: -Complimentary mixed bread basket and assorted olives: Delicious! A+ -Octopus special: I personally found this kind of fishy. Everyone else loved it. B- -Whole artichoke: It was just ok. I didn't find it particularly special. The breadcrumbs weren't crispy. B -Burrata special with roasted red peppers and asparagus over polenta: You can't go wrong with burrata. The vegetables were good. The polenta was forgettable. B+ -Mixed sauteed mushrooms: They tasted like mushrooms. Nothing special. B -Calamari with marinara: I really liked this. Others thought it tasted frozen. To each their own! A- ENTREES: -Lamb shank osso bucco over risotto special: I was really surprised how good this was! It wasn't a traditional osso bucco (cut thinly across the bone). It was a nicely braised whole lamb shank! I just wish they hadn't smothered the risotto in the lamb sauce. It was a good sauce but a bit salty. I just really wanted to taste the cheesy goodness of the risotto more. Best dish of the night! My friend who ordered the same thing agreed! A Here's what the others in my group ordered for their entrees. I didn't taste these myself so I can't rate them: -Swordfish special -Pappardelle with beef Bolognese -Squid ink pasta with mixed seafood special -Veal parmegiana with spaghetti -Whole dover sole fileted and plated tableside, option for sauce on the side -Scallops over risotto Everyone seemed to like their entrees EXCEPT for the swordfish, which was described as dry and not particularly fresh. yep, as good as it gets! This has become one of our two "go to' restaurants. The food is outstanding. Everything is made to order. The pasta is always fresh and al dente, cooked just right. Most fish is also properly cooked, not overdone and dry.A bit noisy when they get crowded on weekend nights. Our favorites are the Cesar salad made with extra garlic "a la Larry" is sublime( tasty). We always enjoy the linguine with fresh clams,as well as the other pasta. on and on, all terrific. Nice evening at Il Castello with friends. The dining room is small and a bit loud. There was an older crowd, but maybe that's because we ate dinner at 6:45. There was a misunderstanding about restaurant week- we booked the reservation through Open Table, but didn't know that the restaurant week menu wasn't offered between 6 and 8 pm. After some discussion, the manager graciously let us order from the Restaurant Week menu. I was impressed that he did the right thing. We were served an excellent basket of bread and breadsticks upon being seated. Cocktails were very good, as was the wine by the glass. The mozzarella and tomato salad was very good. Branzino and veal Milanese were very good. Desserts were very good. The waitstaff were solicitous and pleasant. Overall, a very good meal at a very good Italian restaurant. Had lunch there last week during restaurant week. Service was great. We were promptly seated and asked what we wanted to drink. Water glasses were filled immediately and olives and bread were brought out. I had a delicious rigatoni bolognese with a sausage sauce. My friend had homemade ravioli in a vodka cream sauce. Il Castello is the hidden gem of Mamaroneck. Defined by phenomenal expressions of classic Italian food, Il Castello is comfort food at its finest. I've been visiting Il Castello since it opened and I've never been disappointed. They know me by now, greet me by name and with my favorite glass of vino. Who doesn't love that?! When you sit down they provide wonderful bread and assorted goodies. For starters my favorites are the Caprese and the Seafood Salad. The Caprese is a nice size portion but the peppers hurt my stomach. The Seafood Salad is so fresh and can even be ordered as a meal. Also the homemade Pasta Fagioli is one of the best I ever had. I tried several of the main dishes and pastas and I've loved them all. I can't speak for desert because I am usually too stuffed to eat anymore! The service and presentation is top notch. SO DISAPPOINTED! Just walked out of there! I had made an 8 o'clock reservation for myself and two sons for Christmas Eve. The place was insanely packed with customers overflowing out of the restaurant and into the cold outside. I walked over to an employee and asked if we still had to wait considering we had an 8 o'clock reservation. He replied with a "yes". I then asked him if that meant that we would be eating dinner at 10 o'clock. Again he replied with a "yes". I understand that it's Christmas Eve and expected a slight wait, but TWO hours?! My children and I walked out extremely disappointed since it being Christmas Eve and most other restaurants were probably already booked and not accepting any more reservations. I'm just curious as to why reservations are even taken if they don't honor them. We found an intimate restaurant around the corner, Rosa's La Scarbitta, and had an amazing meal. Went there tonight for restaurant week. Our first time there. You could tell that there were a lot of regulars there and yet we were treated like one. What a refreshing idea. We had clams oreganata (whole, not a big fan). I had Chicken Martini - fabulous, my husband had Sole Francese - great. Dessert was Italian cheesecake and tiramisu - cheesecake - okay - tiramisu - one of the best I ever had. Table wobbled, they saw it and fixed it. Espresso, not the best. We will go back for sure. I have only had delicious authentic Italian food and superb service since I started coming here regularly five years ago. If you do not see what you want on the menu (I'm a sucker for Veal Piccata), ask. Want a special sauce on your pasta, they will whip it up, and it will be awesome. Lenny, the owner, knows his wine. Let me start by saying my food was delicious. For the food alone I would give 4 stars. The service was good (fast, courteous, and attentive), and there was valet so that was awesome. However, what I did think was a little off was the pricing. My hubby and I went here for a nice dinner out! We eat at alot of the places on Mamaroneck Ave but we had never tried this place- not really "on the avenue" by the way. It always looked fancier and it was just a bit. Anyway on to the food.... it was really good. I got the chicken caprese and it was delicious, my husband got a veal dish and also loved it. I went here a month ago.I am not a fan of this place at all. The food is way overpriced and the staff is very fake. I mean it in the sense that they are being nice to you simply because they want to make money off of you and not because they really care. I just did not feel comfortable eating there. Went here for Valentine's Day 2015. Had a gift certificate so we gave it a try. Wife's ravioli was good. The escarole was delish. My steak had to be the toughest piece of meat I've ever had in my life. I couldn't even cut the thing. I sent the whole thing back practically. Told the waiter quietly that it was extremely tough and I didn't want to make a scene i just wanted him to tell chef as I would want to know if it was my restaurant. Went out on a rare date with my wife to Mamaroneck. We had no reservations so we were forced to eat outside, which was ok, if it wasn't for the biting mosquitoes. The place was quite busy, the owner, who is not from Italy, but from Montenegro, was very polite as was the waiter. Now the food.... Ok I've read, about the outstanding fish from this place like the Bronzino, so I tried it.. It was just ok. The portions are quite small for the price.. The beet and Gorgonzola cheese, was once again, just ok. The food here is not outstanding, but average, not good for the steep price and being away from the busy part of town across the railroad station. Would probably not go again. read more

Went for the first time last night and had a delicious meal across the board. For appetizer, I had the risotto with black truffles and it was the BEST I had EVER had. The baked clams were also very good, whole clams which I like. For dinner I had the Branzino which was cooked to perfection and served table side. I also tasted my friends shrimp scampi over capellini, which was also very very tasty. Hubby had The stuffed veal special which was stuffed w prosciutto mozzarella and it was also really good. Visited Il Castello for restaurant week and what a pleasure. We were a party of five and some of us ordered items that were not on the price fixe menu and EVERYTHING was excellent. The octopus, seafood salad and clams oreganato were delicious. Everyone was so satisfied with their meals. Service was excellent ! They are attentive and do not rush your meal. The owner knew that we were never there before and was gracious enough to buy us a round of after dinner drinks. Meh. Il Castillo was fine. I wouldn't go rushing back. I had an early Thanksgiving dinner there with my older parents and I was expecting a better experience. Everyone working there seemed disinterested and unorganized. We were there for a 4pm seating and they seemed in a great rush to move us through the meal. My father and I ordered the traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner and it was average. Nothing was great--not the food, service or ambience. They offer valet parking but then seemed less than thrilled to retrieve our car at the end of the meal. (It was raining). There are so many better restaurants in the area that offer far better food and experience. Not going to rush back to Il Castello. Disappointing. read more

What a find! We were heading south on 95 from a golf outing looking to avoid traffic when I bit the bullet and said that our 2 cars would meet here on the basis of the first Yelp review that stated there were obviously regulars when the reviewer visited. We got there about 6 on a Wednesday- it was empty only to fill with patrons who shook hands with the owner. Although we were still in golf clothes, we were treated royally and service continued to be exemplary even when the restaurant was full. We ordered from the specials (4 soft shelled crabs, a Dover sole, branzino and a steak) after sharing appetizers. There was not a morsel of food left on any plate! And the whole time everyone was commenting on the wonderful kitchen aromas. Dessert was equally wonderful with a candle and serenade for my birthday.
