We went here for my friend's birthday. It was the first time we all visited this restaurant and all seven of us loved it. The restaurant itself had a nice ambience and we loved that it was not noisy. Service was great with various staff stopping by our table throughout the night making sure we had everything we needed. The food was the highlight. We started with a Caesar salad, fried calamari, burrata and prosciutto, and mozzarella Caprese for the table. The appetizers were delicious and perfectly prepared. After finishing our starters, we ordered Linguine and White Clam Sauce, Branzino, Pollo Murphy and Shrimp Fra Diablo. Each meal was perfectly seasoned and were generously portioned. The Pollo Murphy was massive with plenty to eat at the restaurant and plenty to take home. I was visiting from New York however my friends who live near Madison New Jersey will now make this a regular restaurant in their rotation. read more

IL Gocccino saved us. We had a reservation at a nearby Italian restaurant. It was my parents' 59th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, they neglected to tell us they had a party of 30 on one side of the narrow restaurant and a party of 20 on the other side. We were wedged in between them. We simply couldn't stay there, but it was the week before Christmas and every restaurant we called was unable to take us. On a chance I walked into IL Gocccino, which was nearby. It looked warm and welcoming, and filled with holiday spirit. They seemed to be filled to capacity, but they took us in anyway. They were friendly and helpful and repeatedly stopped by to make sure we were enjoying our meal. My father started with the Vongole Al Forno, which is basically Clams Oreganata, and I ordered the Mozzarella en Carozza. Sadly, he was not a fan of the clams, feeling they tasted mostly of breadcrumbs and very little clams. Fortunately, I thought the Mozzarella en Carozza was very good. You can get it with either tomato or anchovy sauce. I chose the anchovy sauce and it was the perfect accompaniment to the crispy, gooey fried mozzarella. For entrees, my father ordered a pasta special that featured fresh crab meat (I can't recall the name of it). It was a bit rich, but it was loaded with crab and on the whole it was quite good. My mother ordered the Salmon Mediterranean, which included fresh filet of wild salmon, artichokes, sun-dried tomatoes, shiitake mushrooms, lemon white wine & garlic. We all agreed this was the best entrée of the night. I ordered Veal Parmesan, which was perfectly acceptable, but not as tender as I would have liked, and I felt the portion was a bit small considering the price. For dessert, we all shared their homemade Tiramisu. It was delicious. I recommend it. Although every dish we had wasn't the best, I think it was more about personal taste than quality. If the restaurant is always busy they're doing something worth trying. Il Goccino is a long standing favorite of good friends in the area, who lured a group of six of us to Madison on a Friday night. The food and service were excellent, in the unassuming but not uninviting ambiance of a neighborhood Italian restaurant. Spaghetti Alla Amatriciana was superb as an appetizer, good flavors and a nice palette wake up. Veal marsala was rich and flavorful. Dessert tray was brought out with all dishes prepared as examples, irresistible. If we're ever in Madison we'll return. read more

We had a family New Year's Eve dinner. 4 course Prefixe menu. Apps of based clams and broccoli rabe sausage were large portions and flavorful. Caesar Salad intermezzo perfect. Numerous Entree selections and we went with halibut, veal Marsala and chicken Milanese and all came with vegetables and were exceptional. Numerous dessert choices with my favorite being the homemade ricotta cheesecake. Service couldn't have been better. I've eaten here many times, for both lunch and dinner. I've never had a bad meal. I find the service friendly and efficient while never overbearing. The food is always excellent and there are many options. I particularly like the spedini with anchovy sauce. I usually get eggplant parm as a main course but everything I've ordered, or that my wife has ordered, has always been cooked perfectly and the portions are generous enough that we've never left hungry. We don't usually order dessert because my wife bakes four times a week but the few times I've had dessert here I thought the desserts were excellent. read more

Any restaurant which has survived the last four post pandemic years deserves congratulations. What they do right: warm and gracious hospitality, with very friendly, helpful and attentive servers. The upscale housing development in the surrounding community will reward businesses that can keep up. Eight years into this business, it is evident that the table capacity has been carefully maximized. However, the areas needing improvement are the aesthetics of the interior and the presentation of the food. There is a saying that we eat with our eyes. The interior lighting is a mix of cold and warm fixtures that are quite dim, making it difficult to read the menu, and doesn't allow the food to look its best. The rear left wall of cardboard boxes did nothing to help either. The menu is comprehensive and some of the specials were creative. Their pricing is progressively moving from a $$ level to almost $$$. Our average three course dinner was about $70 per person before tax and tip. They are conservative with salt and spices, which may play well with the masses, but lack excitement to the pleasure of the discerning palate. The special grilled portabello mushrooms with a creamy gorganzola/balsamic sauce was the best tasting appetizer, but was way oversauced. Ask for extra bread to enjoy the extra sauce or it can double as a great tasting dressing for a shared salad. The veal milanese was nicely prepared, but needed some salt and lemon to bring it to life. The Linguettine All' Vongole had to be returned because the pasta wasn't fully cooked. They did return in less than 5 minutes with a properly cooked plate. The chicken rollatini were good but not exceptional. The sole livornese was good, but was conservative in flavor and could have more richness and edge IMO. The consensus of preference on the desserts were in this order: 1. Almond Tirimisu, 2. Limoncello Cake, 3. Zabaione, 4. Rice Pudding, 5. Ricotta/Mascapone Cheesecake. Overall this is a good restaurant that needs an interior facelift, and a slightly higher level of attention to food presentation and liveliness of flavor. If you are an experienced cook, or have a discerning palate, this will not be a place that you will be rushing back to. It's good but not memorable. read more

Dad's been trying to get me to try Il Goccino for a while, and last night I agreed-mostly because we're hosting our family Christmas Eve dinner here and I wanted to sign off on the choice. I couldn't have been more pleased. The space is generous (important, as we'll be 24), tables are well spaced, front and rear entries, lots of parking. Another plus is the sound deadening, all acoustic tiles on the ceiling to keep the din down. The captain/owner Al came over to review a few menu details for the holiday meal, and we were off! Attentive bread/wine service, nice cruet of extra virgin olive oil, warmed bread-off to a good start. Pre-holiday I'm being careful, so I opted for carpaccio followed by another appetizer, a special of broccoli rabe, sausage, and long hot peppers. The chef nailed it! Generous portion of carpaccio over an arugula salad, loaded with capers and Parmigiano Reggiano. Details count; the lemon wedges served alongside were precisely cut, seeded, and offered with their own cocktail fork for squeezing. Outstanding! My other appetizer was great, nice crispy char on the sausage but still juicy. Ample broccoli rabe, and while the long hots were too hot to eat they lent a nice flavor to the rest of the dish. Was craving some pasta when I was in the area and saw that they had a Sausage arrabiata rigatoni. The restaurant has nice tables, artwork, and had some nice older music (Sinatra?) Playing in the background. My server was extremely polite and checked on me several times. I appreciate that he explained to me how to swirl the lemon rind when drinking an Expresso. Very relaxing environment. Bread was just okay and Expresso was decent, though I never order this normally, so I can't really judge. The arrabiata pasta was fantastic! Pasta was slightly firm, sauce had great flavor and plenty of olive oil. The sausage had a bit of bite to it and was also great. Also the menu said the dish is SPICY, but I felt it was just moderately spicy. My spice tolerance is above average though. I went through my pasta slowly and savored every bite. Limoncello cake was also light and sweet. My lunch was excellent and relaxing, exactly what I had hoped for. And again, the service was excellent. read more

Went here for dinner last Friday with my SO. It's a pleasant comfortable place in the heart of Madison and we luckily found parking. We took a chance that walk-ins could be seated and we had no issue. The menu has many offerings we would both like to try, but we had to pick two. My SO loves Pasta alla Norma, so she chose it. I chose the chicken parmigiana. We also ordered a Caprese to share to start. After ordering we were served really good Italian bread with a choice of butter or olive oil. The bread was very good. Their olive oil was fruity but very good. The caprese was excellent. The tomatoes were firm and they were seasoned extremely well. My SO really enjoyed her pasta. I tried a bit and thought it was excellent. Their sauce is delicious and refined. My chicken parm was excellent. Again the sauce was excellent, the chicken was cooked perfectly and was moist. There was a fair amount of cheese but not too much. The pasta was cooked perfectly. For dessert we shared a cannoli and it was exceptional! Light crispy shell and full rich cream. 6 pm. Italian food was our destination. There are pizza places APLENTY. Not exactly the "Italiano" experience we were after. That would also preclude any chains (I'm looking at you Olive Garden!). Yelpers gave this place a solid 4 1/2. Let's nudge up the average. It is byob and a liquor store is conveniently adjacent. (Although they asked us if we wanted Sambuca at the end of dinner?) This is not a rushed dining experience so relax and enjoy! Located on a charming stretch of yesteryear, we stepped in. Waiters all know their menu and recite, from memory, a lengthy list of specialties. Our wine was un-brown bagged, unscrewed and poured without comment. Bread and olive oil delivered. An appetizer of calamari was presented and we loitered with it for long enough, I thought perhaps our table would get overloaded with the entrees. No. As it used to be and still should, they patiently waited until we were done?! Outrageous! Clocking in around the 1 hour mark (not a complaint, it's a compliment), Tortellini Bolognes and Pollo Scarpariello were served. Both were quite tasty. Cleared away, unhurriedly, a tray was presented with wonderful desserts! Pieces of chocolate mousse cake and lemoncello cake were consumed with a thought to undoing my top button. When that was over, we were casually offered coffee or espresso. The latter came with a small bit of lemon peel on a tiny spoon. Not wanting to seem more pedestrian than our sweatshirts and jeans portrayed us by asking, a discrete google search said to twist it over the coffee and wipe it on the rim. "Hey everyone! Look how we know how to dine!", as we flaunted our new knowledge by grandly exaggerating our lemon-peel technique so as to be admired by the more appropriately dressed patrons. By now, time was irrelevant. I was reminded of the dining experiences I've had... everywhere in Europe. I had to ASK for the check!?! Inconceivable!! The grand total for a giant bottle of Pellegrino, 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, 2 espressos over the course of 2+ hours = $90. Not including tip. read more

Great restaurant!!! We have been here several times and each time I say I need to post a review on yelp. It is a family run restaurant and the service is stellar. It is byob, they open the bottle and are always there to fill your glass and my water glass is never empty either. My family just had the pleasure of celebrating a birthday at Il Goccino. The gentleman who answered the phone was extremely nice and helpful. Something I don't find much anymore. We were a party of 17 and the service could not have been better. They were attentive and anticipated our every need. The food was fantastic and there wasn't one complaint. How they were able to serve 17 hot dinners at one time was a wonder. They actually knew who the birthday person was, without being told, and brought out a dessert with a candle just for them. One of the owners checked several times, without being intrusive, to be sure everything was good. For our first 're-opening' dinner out, we chose Il Goccino. The food was amazing, and the service was on point. We had the zucchini blossoms to start that were from their garden! Outstanding. Stopped by this place while I was in town for a business trip. I ended up ordering one of my go to Italian dishes, the chicken Marsala. I rather enjoyed my meal. The Marsala sauce had some good flavors. Although Marsala is my go to, I'm also quite hard to please (my grandmothers marsala is amazing). I definitely enjoyed my entree. For dessert: chocolate mousse cake! I was expecting the dessert to have some more flavor to it. It's basically just mousse sitting on top of a dry piece of chocolate cake. I wouldn't order it again, but it satisfied my chocolate enough. To improve- I always love when Italian restaurants include bread in their to go orders by default. We had a family birthday last week and needed to select a restaurant that everyone would enjoy. We chose Il Goccino. With its sparkling white tablecloths and pleasant decor, it is just right for a nice evening. It is not too noisy, so we can enjoy our conversation without shouting. Several of us tried some of the specials, which were delicious. Some of us went for tried and true favorites which were, as usual, delicious and attractively presented. They were even great about adjusting a dish to work for the member of our party with food allergies. Our group of 8 which gather once a month and have been for YEARS went to Il Coccino July 15, 2023. Atmosphere was pleasant and food was good. We split a salad, as we always do because we just don't eat as much as we use to. There is a $3 plate charge for each couple for sharing. The servers were not particularly pleasant and seemed rather rushed. When they gave us our entrees they placed them and rushed away. I realized they served me the wrong entree and immediately tried waving them back, to no avail. Everyone started eating and finally a woman came and rectified the situation. Wrong entree was given to one of my friend, who didn't realize it and had started to eat it. When the Woman Server realized it, she ROLLED HER EYES AND TOLD ME TO SWITCH PLATES. Ewww. She eventually gave me a fresh plate, but with negative comments stating my friend should not have eaten it. I realize mistakes happen but her reaction was uncalled for and she continued saying this even when I told her i had tried waving the server back and unfortunately my friend didn't realize that the entree wasn't theirs. Such an unpleasant experience. And our bill was $200 with tip. read more
