To start you stand in a narrow hallway and wait to be recognized. No indication if you are in the right place, other than a bunch of people eating. If you're lucky it'll be less than 5 minutes before a staff member greets you. Perhaps most of the guests are used to this. It appears to be very clubby, like visiting a grouchy old uncle's house. The service was poor. I had to ask for water refills 3x. Proprietor gruff and rude and smelled like cigarettes. The food was 8/10 and the $40 house bottles were a good value. We were here 6-7 years ago and had a similar experience. My wife of 29 years had a hard time refraining from creating a scene. She refuses to ever return, so I guess I'd need a divorce before I come again. Honestly, I can't think of a reason to return unless you like being abused! read more

I had a similar experience to one of the other reviewers. We stood in a hallway and were ignored. The owner was walking in and out of the kitchen with his cigarette and his ashes were falling all over the place. When I said that I would prefer him not to smoke (it is the law), he started to raise his voice to me. We walked out and never went back. Went for the first time tonight. Small intimate place. I was a little apprehensive because of the negative reviews but the service was excellent. The waitress said she was the chef's mother and was very friendly and very helpful with explaining the menu and specials and also helped customize a drink for my wife. My bourbon Manhattan was perfect and the blood orange salad was also very good. Bean bruschetta served gratis was slightly salty but that was my only complaint. Chicken breast special with artichokes and broccoli di rabe was very tasty and juicy. All in all a pleasant dining experience and will be back. My only regret is that I've lived in the area for over 25 years and didn't find this earlier. Godfathers is still my go to place but Trattoria Toscana will also be frequented on occasion. read more

Don't waste your money. The proprietor has a reputation for verbally abusing customers and staff. We heard him drop an f-bomb from the kitchen which silenced the FOH for a moment. The odor of cigarette smoke wafted in whenever someone opened the door, which created an unpleasant experience. I ordered the cod oreganata special, which looked particularly unappetizing, mounded up on the plate. It had a unpleasant taste as well, so I took only a few bites before deciding it wasn't worth the risk. My daughter's shrimp angel hair special contained only 4 shrimp! Now that that's out of the way, I'll tell you about my most recent visit. There were 3 of us, one with very strict dietary limitations (no meat, dairy or oils of any kind). We started with the Roman Artichokes, (well, 2 of us did). Long stem artichoke hearts, deep fried and lightly seasoned, served with lemon. So tender and tasty with slightly crispy outer leaves. I could eat them like potato chips! For dinner I had the Filet of Sole Livornese. The fish was perfectly cooked and covered in a sauce similar to puttanesca. A perfect match! Another had a perfectly cooked Frutti Di Mare. Seafood, shrimp, calamari, etc in a light tomato sauce over linguini. Our dietetically challenged friend explained to the owner what he couldn't eat, Rudy took it in stride and had the kitchen whip up a dish of steamed vegetables over linguini. Everyone was happy and full at the end of the meal! The place itself is small/cozy with approximately 12-15 tables. Delicious and authentic food in a cozy, comforting restaurant. Came here with a few coworkers as it was recommended. The décor is very cute but room is limited. We came around 7 pm so not crowded, perhaps 2-3 other parties. We had some bruschetta (free) and ordered a prosciutto, mozzarella, tomato dish for appetizer. We ordered the beef short rib and risotto and the sausage rigatoni. We also had a delicious red wine. The serving sizes are large and the food tastes fresh and amazing. I am giving this place 4 stars because it is pricey. While the food is great, paying $20+ for a pasta dish is a bit exorbitant, lowering the price by $5 would be more reasonable. On Friday night, needed to wait about 10min for a table. But do call ahead of time cause the my can start putting your name down while you are on your way. Thanks to those who suggested the braised short ribs and brick chicken. Especially the brick chicken... They are so good, perfectly cooked, seasoned and portioned. We could have skipped the salad which was just so so. Our neighboring table ordered a cappuccino that looks divine so we had to have one ourselves. Good call. They are not Byob. Went for an early New Year's Eve dinner with some friends. Probably the fifth or sixth time here as they really like the restaurant. This was the first time though that I realized how very good the place really is. The appetizers and salads that we had were terrific. I had the arugula salad which was dressed perfectly. Two others had the pear salads high looked terrific as well. One person had a sausage and lentil dish that was reported as tasty as well. I'd have gad trouble eating the sausage appetizer as it was tough on the eyes. The entrees were fabulous. I had a filet (three pieces actually) that was perfectly cooked and was smothered in a delicious brown sauce and topped with gorgonzola and blue cheese. The ladies had lamb chops and veal chops that they raved about. They loved their dishes and insisted that they had out-ordered me. I doubt it but if they hàd, then they had a delicious meal. The fourth of us had a lemon sole special that he was happy with. Dessert exceeded expectations as well. One group shared a lemon tart and the other a chocolate lava cake. Both dishes had generous amounts of gelato and whipped cream to top off a perfect meal. I've been going to Toscana for years. It is a great experience, and the food is our favorite. The burrata mozzarella is awesome, fried calamari are always tender, and salads are delicious. Pic is of the shrimp special with zucchini risotto. I added the grated cheese. It was awesome! My favorite entree is the steak Pepe which is their version of steak au poivre. I have to tell you that I try the same dish whenever I see it on the menu. I travel all over the country, and Toscana's au poivre is hands down the best I've ever had. That includes 150 a head steak houses! All of their pasta dishes and risottos are tremendous. Their bologonese is also the best we've ever had. The salmon is great. I love the mustard sauce. My wife's favorite is the cod Livornese, which I also enjoy very much. Trattoria Toscana is an experience. The staff does not wear fancy ties, nor do they greet you with fake smiles or pretentious attitudes. What they offer is tremendous food, authentic service, and a familial place simply to enjoy an amazing meal with friends and family. Joined a large group of long time friends for a nice dinner. Very small, intimate place with just enough room for 12 of us. Seated outside the kitchen, so we had to be careful when getting up we didn't run into any workers. Both waitresses were friendly, but some may consider rude. Cocktails were large, but the alcohol did not overwhelm the taste. The salad was a large romaine lettuce wedge. Delicious. I ordered mussels in HOT sauce. Large portion, enough for 3 people, had just enough heat to be fantastic. My wife ordered Veal Marsala and I ordered Shrimp Fra Diavolo. Very tasty, large portion and enough heat. The pasta was spectacular. All the food arrived at the same time, hot and with only one meal missing pasta as a side. Capuchino and coffee was HOT and tasty. We've dined at this restaurant on three prior occasions; the last time with another couple. In each instance, the food has been outstanding, and our experience with the staff has been fine. However, on Wednesday, I called and spoke with the owner about reserving a table for three on Thursday evening, adding that I knew their hours were until 9:30 pm, but I wanted to find out whether an 8:15 pm reservation would be too late. He replied "Not at all. Come in." An attorney friend of ours drove in from Westchester, specifically to try out this restaurant that we had raved about, since he enjoys dining at venues where he can take clients. However, when we arrived at 8:15 pm, we were advised by the staff that they were closed, and they claimed that the final reservation in their book had been for 6:30 pm. Candidly, my impression was that business was lighter than they'd anticipated, so they decided it wasn't worth their time to remain for the 8:15 pm reservation. I found another review, while scrolling back about a year, wherein someone else posted a similar experience. Therefore, while I do rate their cuisine a 5, the lack of consideration, along with misrepresentation of hours of operation, compel me to rate them a 1 in the customer service category. In fairness, I've chosen to go down the middle and assign an overall rating of 3. I remain uncertain whether we'll return ... but my friend and his clients will not. read more

I used to visit here monthly and Rudy the "most angry owner" of a restaurant I have ever encountered had a night for the ages. Our group is used to the servers Lorrie and the homeyness of the place. Our venture here had just about all the makings for a disaster. We showed up 10 minutes before closing. We're in suburbia, granted of NYC, but suburbia nonetheless. Hubby was starving and was about to lose it with a raging headache he's been nursing for the duration of his train trip up to Newark from DC mid-day, through our visit with a dear friend in Brooklyn who just had a baby, and sitting with little miss Mari-a Andretti (yes, that's me) through cross-town traffic on Canal Street in the early NYC evening. I almost missed the place because of the NJ layout of this particular intersection with no U-turns, no left-turns, no turns off the highway I wanted to leave. And in the darkness of suburbia, I almost drove right past the place. Hope, it seemed, had flown the coup. Hubby and I pulled up, sheepishly rolled down the window, and asked, "Is it too late for us to come in for dinner?" My aunt had called ahead to let them know we were coming, but I was about to plug Olive Garden into my crackberry to get us some semblance of dinner. "No, no, we're waiting for you." Every eye of the staff stared at us as we sat down, and we felt like we were two teenagers crashing a formal family dinner. We promptly searched their two-page menu to get our order in ASAP. Before we even placed our order, two white bean bruschetta landed in front of us. Hubby's not a fan of beans, so I picked the one with more beans on it to spare him. I should have told him that the bruschetta really, really sucked. I don't know that I've ever had something that tasted so smooth and balanced - the vinegar did not bite and was smooth, and the olive oil was something to savor. I gobbled up each and every bite, and when bread arrived at our table, I started sopping up the olive oil and vinegar mixture at the bottom of the plate. Hubby looked at me suspiciously: he knew that if I was sopping up any food juices, he better eat what's still left on the plate before it too disappeared into my mouth. His experience with this bruschetta was just about the only experience with beans he has ever lauded. We both took specials (and hostess rattled off about a dozen specials) - Hubby the veal Milanese, and I a gnocchi bolognese. I was still sopping up the olive oil and vinegar mixture when our dishes arrived. Now, my gnocchi bolognese was excellent, and the gnocchi, while a touch on the softer side, had wonderful texture. The sauce was tomatoey, slightly creamy, a great balance of rich and acid. Hubby's dish, on the other hand, was other-worldly. The veal was pounded perfectly thin, breaded just right - a perfect balance of flavor and texture, and not over-fried. The topping on his dish, of tomatoes, red onions, and fresh mozzarella, I could eat for days on end. Of the two, I loved his more, but the fact that we cleaned both our plates spoke volumes. While we ate, the hostess came to check on us. I talked with her a bit, and found that she is actually the mother of my cousin's friend who is chef here. Cousin's friend and cousin played in a band together - she told me I should have told her that we knew of her son. No, no, we did not want favors - we weren't going to use guilt to get our foot in the door. If I felt that we entered this establishment as two teenagers crashing a formal family dinner, I now felt as if we were two famished college kids getting our health restored via good ole home cooking, under Mom's watchful eye. So on to dessert! I took of espresso, Hubby some coffee. He had a cannolli, and I had a lemon tart (with limoncello center). Oh heaven. I get really particular with cannolli, especially if the shells taste as if they've been sitting out or if they taste as if they've been pre-filled and left to wait for whomever to order them. Hubby's cannolli was perfect. And my lemon tart? It just really sucked. I may just have to devour all of what they have of that tart to save you the trouble. My wife and I never go out for Italian but during a snow storm our options were limited (we were staying in the area due to unforeseen circumstances). Parking lot is directly in the back. There aren't many tables but they do fill up. You know you are in for a treat when it's snowing yet it's busy. We were greeted by the host which turned out to be the owner. He recommends reservations next time and I can see why. They start off by bringing you a bean bruschetta which is very good but it's drenched in oil. The left over oil was absorbed by the hot Italian bread they bring out. We ordered a couple of apps. The wife had the pasta fagioli (which I sampled and was pleased with) and I decided on the buffalo mozzarella with tomatoes (thick cut tomatoes drizzled with a balsamic sauce) - very good. For our entrees: I had the veal milanese...oh thank you for pounding the crap out of the veal. It was so thin and delicious. The greens were dressed in a light dressing and there was shaved bits of cheese...delicious! The Mrs., on recommendation of several Yelpers, had the short ribs...so good! No knife needed for both of our meals. The service was spot on. Always checking in and making some time for some convo. Prices are good as well. Glass of wine is $8 and entrees range from 12-25ish. They are good portions as well. We didn't stay for dessert (next time) but on the way out we spoke with Rodolfo the owner. Classy and down to earth man. The "service" is the main issue with this restaurant. Laura is the name of the woman who waited on us and she's not a pleasant person. I believe she's either the owner or manager. I've been there 3 times and have been treated rudely each time. In the middle of our meal, I asked Laura for an espresso. She has a propensity for scowling at people, so I made sure to be extra polite while ordering (please and thank you with smiles). The espresso came with my dining partner's wine. I said thank you and received the typical sideways scowl, my friend said thank you and received, "Oh you're so welcome, honey!" When she left I asked the table if they also sensed the animosity that our server was harboring. They all agreed that she was being quite rude to me in particular. I promise that I had done nothing to elicit such a response and it is not atypical behavior for this woman. Laura may be knowledgeable about the menu, but whether her knowledge of the dishes extends beyond a, "Yeah, that's good" I cannot tell. I understand that some restaurants prefer to serve meals that are events potentially lasting a couple hours, but some people do not wish to sit in an uncomfortable chair for 20 minutes before ordering and another 15 to 20 afterwards for the check. For the area, the food is good. The pear insalata is wonderful. I also had a mustard and caper encrusted salmon over broccoli rabe. The salmon was slightly overcooked and overpowered by the copious amounts of oil. The oil makes the fish tender and succulent but the delicate salmon taste is not presented well. So a big thank you to all my fellow yelpers. My sons and I were traveling out of the Statue of Liberty Park and on the way back to our campsite. My youngest son said he wanted pasta and so I turned to Yelp to see what was in the area. This one seemed to have great reviews and so we gave it a shot. If you are reading this review and if you want one of the most fantastic meals you've had in a long time do not read anything else and go straight to trattoria Toscana. We walked in at 4:55 and where the first people in the restaurant for the evening. We were seated by a wonderful waitress who immediately brought out water and complimentary bruschetta. She explained that we were earlier than our normal crowd but we were more than welcome to stay. You could tell by her mannerisms in the restaurant that this was a real find and treasured by the people who were coming in and knew of the value and quality of the food presented. This restaurant is owned and managed by a true Italian Tuscan and you taste it in the food. I asked for suggestions and both of my sons were pointed to the cheese ravioli. By far one of the best and it brought smiles to both of their faces as they were eating. Of course dad snuck a few bites and you could tell that the cheese was fresh as was the pasta. The only thing that made the noodle better was the sauce over-the-top which was phenomenal. Fresh and flavorful. I asked her what the best item on the menu was and pulled a "Keicher" she suggested the beef short ribs and I jumped at the opportunity. OMG!!! If you visit please have one of your table mates order the beef short ribs. I don't know that I have ever had a better serving. All the way through the plate I kept saying "wow, wow, all this is so good." And after a long day of sightseeing nothing tasted better than a glass of the house key auntie which was both smooth and appropriate it wasn't too young of a wine that you sometimes get at Italian restaurants. Last night my boyfriend and I went here for dinner and when we called to make a reservation they were rude, trying to convince me to move my 5:15 reservation to 5pm for no reason. When we arrived the owner wanted to seat us near the bathroom (it smelled too) and we politely asked if we could sit at a different table and he flat out said "No". Then proceeded to complain about "pain in the ass Americans wanting to get whatever they want" Then said to my boyfriend "i hope she's not a pain in the ass for your sake". I was in a bad mood the rest of the night and wanted to leave. Then 10 mins later I turn to see THE OWNER SMOKING A CIGARETTE IN THE KITCHEN!! that was the last straw for me. An absolute gem of a restaurant! Run by a fantastic family (Rudy, Claudia, and Giacomo), this is the perfect place for a cozy, delicious Italian dinner. I usually start with the fried Roman artichokes but in the summer I can't resist the amazing Jersey tomatoes with mozzarella or burrata. Every pasta is fresh and delicious. I am always so excited to hear the specials - the salmon with salsa verde is exquisite and I am truly devastated I've only lucked into ONE night when the special is eggplant parmigiana (phenomenal). Everyone knows that New York is host to wealth of fantastic Italian restaurants-Marea, Babbo, Del Posto, Scalini Fedeli, Patsy's, Carmine's (just to name a few)-but outside of the city, off of route 1, lies a "hidden gem" by the name of Tratattoria Toscana. I use quotes because although it has a very inconspicuous location, it is well known among foodies, locals, and Italian's looking for a proper pasta with gravy. This place is always jam packed and the delicious food being served is worthy of such loyal patronage. To start, I suggest the Sliced Pears, Prosciutto, and Shaved Parmesan Cheese ($13) or my personal favorite, Mussels cooked in Spicy Tomato Broth with White Wine and Garlic ($11). Another great way to sample the menu is to split a pasta dish or two between the table as an appetizer. The Amatriciana cooked with pancetta, onion, tomato, and pecorino cheese is very flavorful red sauce with a delicious hearty bacon flavor. For my main dish I ordered the Braised Short Ribs in a Chianti Wine Reduction, served with Parmesan Risotto and Garlicky Broccoli Rabe. As if all of these plate components aren't already my favorite things to eat, they were also cooked to PERFECTION! The meat just seemed to fall apart each time I poked it with the fork, and the risotto was a perfect creamy compliment to the flavors of the Chianti wine reduction. The pair was like an upscale, Italian version of mashed potatoes and gravy. And the broccoli rabe, which can be a hit or a miss for many restaurants, was out of this world good. The garlic seasoning was just right and it was cooked without being too mushy. This dish certainly makes my list of Top 10 Food-gasm experiences. My mom ordered the Tilapia Livornese topped with capers, black olives, caramelized onion, and tomatoes and served with oven-roasted potatoes. Stealing a small forkful from her was a challenge, thats how much she enjoyed it. The fish was light and buttery and the sauce was incredible. My dad, on the other hand, opted for something a little bit richer-the Lollipop Lamb Chops in an aged balsamic reduction, served with risotto and roasted potatoes (see photograph at top). As you can see in the photograph, the lamb is cooked to perfection with a bright pink hue in the center of the meat. The balsamic reduction had a nice flavor but thankfully was used sparingly, so as not to take away from the quality taste of the meat. And the potatoes-although just a side component on the plate-were also very nicely done with a crispy outer shell and piping hot center. After finishing with our main courses, we ordered a round of cappuccinos and a large piece of Homemade Ricotta Cheesecake to share as a table. The coffee was nothing special but the cheesecake was very delicious. I had high hopes since a lot of my friends and coworkers are regulars here. My boyfriend and I decided to get away from our usual date night restaurants and opt for Italian last night. The entryway was a little odd. You walk down a long-ish hallway into the restaurant area (I'd say it's about the size of my living room). We didn't wait long before sitting down, as the place was not very busy at all. The list of specials for the day was about double the size of the menu (which seemed odd to me), but each dish sounded great. But when the food came, I was pretty disappointed. My boyfriend ordered mushroom ravioli in a rib sauce of some sorts, which sounded amazing. I had a chicken dish with peppers, onions, and sausage. My dish was very filling, but not unlike and other "Sausage and peppers" night at home (aside from the added chicken). His on the other hand was the problem. There was only about 5 or 6 raviolis in a brown sauce with a couple pieces of shredded meet on top. Very odd. Not once did the waitress stop by to ask how our food was, or to make sure everything came out ok. I'd say the food is "decent" but nothing to write home about. The atmosphere was like a glorified pizza parlor. The service should focus less on catching up with "the regulars" and more on welcoming new customers. And the prices are ASTRONOMICAL! This place was just awful. Food wasn't good- my pasta was mushy and over cooked. My kids pasta was dripping with oil. And the attitude! We were the only people in the restaurant at 5:30 on a Friday evening- we came after the Polar Express. The staff was annoyed we were there. I felt like we were intruders. And the surly owner needs a serious attitude adjustment. Manhattan pricing for an Olive Garden type of place. Save your money and go elsewhere. read more

I wish I took photos. The food was the best I've had in a long time. The lemon sole over a bed of broccoli rabe which I hate to admit but I liked it better than my own broccoli rabe which NEVER happens. The starter bruschetta was delicious perfect crunch and great blend of flavors. My martini was made perfect - and even the cappuccino was perfecto. Sorry I had never stopped in there before. But I will be back. Large enough portion that I had enough for the next day. I've already raved about it to several ppl. read more

This is a nice casual Italian restaurant. The menu is expansive and the service is good. When we dined we were the only four in the place and the next twosome was. Sat right next to is. I found that odd as we seemed to otherwise have the restaurant to ourselves. We all ordered from "the classics" part of the menu. I was the only to get a veal dish, and I was completely underwhelmed. The veal was tender but tasteless. There was likewise no taste to the masala. My dining companions had no complaints on the chicken parm or the chicken Marsala (I find it odd that it was fine on the chicken but tasteless on the veal). That being said if I was in the area I would try the restaurant again but probably try the pasta. read more
