When traveling to Vancouver, I highly recommend Cafe Il Nido for an Italian dinner. We had a lovely Saturday night dinner on the patio. Because the weather was still a bit cool, we were the only folks dining al fresco, so it was romantic, private, and charming. The restaurant is set off the street, so it feels like your own private patio with rose bushes and cute lights. The inside was full with patrons enjoying their meals and live music from a piano player. Our waiter was awesome, and he quickly lit the patio heater for us and brought our wine. My partner enjoyed the tasty Linguini Al Nero, and I enjoyed the Tartufo Spaghetti with perfectly cooked scallops. The pasta was decadent and homemade, and the seafood was super fresh. The only reason a 4 instead of a 5 was it was a bit pricey for portion size, such as the smaller calamari appetizer. I would definitely recommend Cafe Il Nido if you have not tried it yet. Extremely convenient and private location on the corner of Robson and Thurlow. They have a patio space and live music for summer evenings, and a bar and private dining area for groups. Nailed down the ambiance for sure. The service and waiters are attentive; filled our water multiple times and asked about the food. Unfortunately, the food quality is sub-par compared to more established restaurants within blocks. The calamari is rubbery and there was very little coating suggesting that it was from a frozen package. There was an oily texture that was unsettling, and the sauce did not have the truffle garlic mayo flavors as expected. The linguini al nero is not al dente; slightly cold and overcooked. Difficult to tell whether the pasta was made in-house, since the texture was brittle at each bite. The menu mentions white wine butter sauce, but I mostly tasted oil (not olive oil). The desserts were a satisfying finish in comparison, as they were relatively heavy and flavorful. The torte dela nonna grandmother's cake was solid and the fruits were a sweet compliment. Just wished that there was a bigger piece, especially since it was $10. The tiramisu was dry and solid feeling. Not a lot of rum... nor tiramisu... nor mascarpone (as seen in the photo). Might go back again for the ambiance and location alone, but will be very cautious of what food items to order. read more

On a hot summer night, what's best than sitting outside in a patio with a glass of wine recommended by the sommelier + lights + live pianist performance enjoying Italian food just like Lady & the Tramp. This place has become our go to Italian restaurant just because it reminds us of the small Italian restaurants in Italy - hidden in the hustle & bustle. Plus, it is not like other downtown "Group" restaurants that all taste the same & very commercialised / lack of personality / quick turn around. Food quality remain high. Service remain attentive. Definitely a good alternative for a nice evening meal. read more

This small Italian restaurant has been in this location for many years. It is sort of tucked away in an interior courtyard, off the beaten path. While the service was very good and overall a positive experience, we found the food to be mediocre. In particular the tomato sauce in all the pasta dishes was very sweet. The calamari was poor, really very much like deep fried rubber bands. The tiramisu lacked flavour, could not taste the espresso or liqueur it is supposed to have, however, the bruschetta and chicken risotto were good and some in our group enjoyed their meal. There was live music when we were there, for which we were changed a cover per person, I was not aware of this when booking on open table, apparently there is a note on their website. Due to the restaurant being virtually empty, the music overpowered the ambiance of the meal. As well, there is a lot of art depicting nudity in the dining area which seems like a strange decor choice. Not really a traditional Italian restaurant and not on par with others of a similar genre in Yaletown and Robson neighborhood. read more

In search of a place to carbo-load, every single Italian restaurant in Vancouver had at least an hour wait and they were visibly packed. We saw that nobody was here so, we stepped in. The Caucasian ladies in front of us had no reservation but they got seated. So, it was our turn...the old man who seated the ladies turned us away and told us they had no tables available. I never in my whole life have been treated this way nor do I pull out the race card. In this day and age, I didn't think I would have to. So, we stood outside with our heads hung low to find a different restaurant through Yelp and Open Table. Well, surprise! This place has a table! So, what reason were we turned away? While we were outside, a group of 3 Caucasians wearing their gym outfits without a reservation got seated. We were too disgusted by how we were treated that we just couldn't hit that "reserve" button. It could end up even worse for us. I went for a business lunch and had the following: 1) Vegetable soup - this was SO delicious! 2) Pike - fish of the day served with bok choy and garnish with chopped almonds. What a wonderful evening we had at Cafe Il Nido! I had never noticed this hidden gem before right off robson street. The atmosphere is very laid back yet classy, love the low lighting without being too dark. Our server was kind, attentive, and his timing for each course was spot on. Hard to choose a favorite course because everything was delicious. If i had to pick, it would be the Prawn Oreganota and Scallop Carpaccio. I have been to many Italian restaurants in Vancouver and probably miss Café Il Nido! I'm not a big fan of Italian food anyway but my mom likes pasta. It's Dine out Vancouver festival again and I found Il Nido's menu was ok (more selection than others). Why not try it out? Of coz, it's nothing spectacular! We were greeted at the door by the host with no smile and just asked for "did you make any reservation?" After we got seated, my parents only needed a cup of hot water and waitress seemed a bit annoyed. We just ordered from dine out menu (3-course for $38). Il nido insalata (roasted beet salad, feta cheese, gourmet greens with lemon dressing) Good to have salad to start with even though just a sour of lemon dressing, still refreshing. Tonno (Albacore tuna with belgiam andive dressed with spicy ginger citrus reduction) Tuna was good but not fresh Calamari (Grilled squid, fresh tomatoes, green olives tossed in spicy lime pepper remoulade) It's so delicious and tasty! It cooked perfectly. Gamberoni (Seasoned Prawns, served in spicy tomato sauce) I could taste the frozen prawns even in spicy tomato sauce, it's a bit overcooked and dry. OssoBuco (Lamb shank, slow braised in a red wine reduction) Lamb shank quite soft and big. Lasagna (Home made baked vegeterian lasagna layered with eggplant, kale, spinach, parmesan, mozarella in a napoletana sauce) Lasagna was great and the napoletana sauce was good too! Spaghettini (Spaghetti with sautéed mussels, clams, calamari in a spicy arugula pesto sauce) It's fantastic!! A lot of mussels, clam, and squid with tasty spaghetti. Cafe iL Nido makes it up to 4 stars based on the excellent personalized service from our waiter. I appreciated how he took excellent care of us, and saw my OpenTable request to provide my wife with a surprise dessert for her birthday. The food itself was good but not great, and overpriced IMO. Biggest knock is that the pasta we ordered was a bit overcooked. Not horribly flaccid, but far from al dente, which it really should be for a $30 price tag. The mushroom side was *quite* salty - had to eat it with other items to handle the salt. $17? $10-12 max. The meatballs appetizer - $17 for 4 small balls. I get that there's been COVID and inflation, but it wasn't $4.25/ball? Excessive. $10-14 max, with larger balls pls. Good complimentary bread (but not great). The final item - tiramisu was very good. Made a reservation to come here for dinner and put my card down. The day we were supposed to come my friends and I tested positive for Covid so I called the restaurant immediately first thing in the morning to cancel so I wouldn't get charged. No one answered (they were closed) so I waited until the minute they opened to call them. A very rude guy answered and I explained how I tried calling earlier but obviously cannot come in and would like my reservation $$ I put down to be refunded. He said "our cancelation policy requires you call within 6 hours. And you need to contact open table they're the ones who charge you not us." I said okay, I tried calling within 6 hours but no one answered and he said "yeah because we're closed"... I contacted OpenTable, they said that's 100% not true open table never charges customers. The restaurant does the charging & open table is the middleman. The cx person from open table even sent me a personalized email stating they shouldn't have charged me, I did the right thing by cancelling instead of going in with Covid and infecting their staff and they agree I should be refunded. I called the restaurant again and this time a very nice guy answered and said he will talk to the owner and give me a call back. No one ever called me. They charged me $65 for not coming because I had Covid when I did try to call and cancel within their cancelation period. read more

It is hidden back in a courtyard, so very easy to miss. My friend had made a reservation on a Saturday night, and I was surprised when I arrived how quiet it was. We were seated on the side patio. Overall, I'd say my experience was fine. When I initially got there, I was met by the sommelier (I didn't know this at the time)... it was kind of an awkward encounter, so I opted to wait outside until my friend got there. The service was OK throughout, but nothing remarkable. I had the caprese as a starter and the gnocchi as my main. When I placed my order, the waitress cautioned me that it would be a lot of tomatoes (which I found strange, because it seems many Italian dishes are tomato-based, so I knew what I was ordering), but I appreciated the spirit in which the suggestion was offered. My meal was fine, but not remarkable, and given the unremarkable service, I wouldn't seek it out for my next visit. Too many awesome places in Vancouver to explore! read more

Nido is a nice Italian tugged away in a Downtown courtyard with an outdoor seating area. Don't get mislead by their pasta menu, although most pasta dishes list cream as an ingredient they go pleasantly easy on the heavy cream and the Carbonara is a true (cream-free) version. I quite enjoyed my lasagne which was flavourful without being too dense and I highly recommend their Pink Saint-Germaine cocktail. My friends also loved the Torta del Nonna pie. Overall a nice evening out with good food, service, location and lovely live jazz piano. read more

I've been struggling with this review for quite some time now, because I really wanted to give them a better rating. I've eaten at il Nido about 6 times in the last year, three times for dinner and the rest for lunch. Each time, the food has been very good and the service has fluctuated from mediocre to really good. Sadly, the really good service I received was about a year ago and I'm not sure that server is still working there. What a shame. My most recent experience there was a few weeks ago for my birthday. If you subscribe to their newsletter, il Nido will send you a letter for you to bring in on your next visit for a free birthday entrée. So, my friend and I went there for my birthday meal and I was really looking forward to it after my last visit. I found the servers (who I believe are also the owners) to be very indifferent towards us. The gentleman who took our order also brought our wine. At the first sip of wine, my friend commented that it seemed a little too warm, so the server suggested we place it on the windowsill at our table, as there was a bit of a cold draft there. Interestingly enough, each time the female server came to top up our wine glasses, she would remove the bottle from the windowsill (giving us a withering glare) pour the wine and then place the bottle on the table. Of course as soon as she stepped away, we would put the bottle back on the windowsill to 'cool'. It became like a game almost and we kept laughing at how determined she seemed every time she put the bottle back on the table, glaring at us as if to say, "It belongs HERE". Well, fine - if you want the wine bottle on the table, then you should serve it at the right temperature! Sheesh. Let me say that the reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is entirely due to the food - I have to ignore the service because the food is really quite tasty. Plus, the bread they served is quite possibly the best bread I've ever been served in any restaurant, ever. (Yes, even better than those amazing little bread rolls at P2B Bistro!) This bread was served warm and it tasted like what dreams are made of. The top of it was perfectly salty, beautifully browned and the inside was pillowy softness. I wanted to make a bed out of this bread, lay in it and try to eat my way out. Okay, that was TMI, but that's how good this bread is. Really. For starters, I had the seared scallops (beautifully presented) and my friend had the Piedina (Crostini with pesto, cambozola cheese, capicollo ham and dried figs) both appetizers were delicious, no complaints there. For the mains, my friend had the bolognese pasta and I had the osso bucco, which was divine. The only complaint with the mains, was that the parmesan cheese was powdery instead of freshly grated. Otherwise, quite enjoyable. So, despite the really great food, I can only give this place 3 stars because the whole time I was there (especially considering it was my BIRTHDAY) the servers did absolutely nothing to make me feel welcome or appreciated as a guest. In fact, I don't think either one of them smiled once the whole evening. I can't say I won't return, (I'd go back for the bread alone) but Cafe il Nido is certainly not high on my list of places I WANT to eat. I don't make if I originally posted on the wrong Il Nido so here it is again: What a cute surprise this restaurant is!! One of the prettiest patios I have seen in Vancouver. They offer a great martini and wine variety and the food is delicious!! The dishes start around the $20.00 range. There is street parking and it is kid friendly but the main selling point is the quiet patio with it's lush foliage and twinkling white lights. The waiter and possibly the owner was a very friendly older gentleman who allowed us to come in an hour before they were officially open. Amazing customer service. The Camembert is phenomenal!!! It is warm with berries on top, crisp apples and crunchy bread. I wish I took a picture. I enjoyed the mango martini and a beer. Will definitely be going back. Came to Cafe Il Nido for Dine Out 2020 on a Thursday evening, since I was craving some Italian food and a friend (who was well-versed in the Vancouver Dine Out locations) recommended the place. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice, and not exceptionally busy but definitely active. The Dine Out menu -- 3 courses for $45 -- had a huge variety of dishes, so it was a difficult decision. I decided to go with the Funghi (mushrooms), Ravioli, and the Tiramisu. My friend had the Afettoto misto (dried sausage), bolognese penne, and the chocolate cake. We also ordered a side of the focaccia (bread) with olive oil and rock salt. I really enjoyed the food! In particular, the bread, although an additional cost, was extremely tasty. I also enjoyed my ravioli that was perfect - not too salty but also had a lot of flavour. The tiramisu was probably my favourite part of the meal. It was so soft, light, and flavourful! It is very unfortunate that is Nido restaurant with the new administration has lower the customer service and they have been dishonest with their cancelation policy. A few weeks ago I made a reservation but unfortunately I had to cancel it I called the restaurant early on the day (7hrs befor my reservation) they thank me for letting them know and that was it, but I week later I see a charge of $80 to my credit card, after that I call multiple times, I send email to the manager voicing my concerns and finally i heard back from them saying that it is OpenTable policy not theirs and that they can not reverse the charge. I have an unfair bias towards restaurants on and near Robson st. I tend to assume that businesses near touristy areas don't produce quality products... because they don't have to. WELL. I was proved wrong today at Il Nido. Meeting there for wine with a few friends, I got the grumbles... the owner recommended the risotto and we went with it. Soon after came the bread... piping hot, crispy on one side, and ready for dipping into the olive oil & balsamic. Gah. So good. Then came the risotto that melted my soul. It tasted so much like camembert, I might as well have been eating a block of it (and that I mean in a very very very good way). We devoured it and I don't know what I'll do now that it's gone. I came to Cafe Il Nido this afternoon for lunch. They have a nice-looking patio, but we opted to sit inside because of the local Juneuary weather (I even had to close the window next to our table, which is too bad). Everything about my experience today was excellent. Prompt and friendly service, even as we were (as usual) indecisive about what to eat. The food was really really, really good: the lobster ravioli and the lasagna were both perfect, in creamy sauces that didn't feel too thick or heavy. The polpettine appetizer (minced tuna and eggplant baked into little balls in a spicy tomato sauce) was also very very good. Even the bread tasted fresh - I don't know if they bake it on site but it definitely seems like it could be. The lunch menu is not very diverse, with only a few mains to choose from and most of them are vegetarian. However, if everything on the menu is as good as the items we had today, there should be something for everyone. They also claim to be "ocean wise and free range" and offer gluten-free pasta on request. The prices are not cheap, so this is a place to splurge on rather than to go to on a regular basis (for me that is. Your budget might be different, of course, in which case next time, you're paying). For the two of us for lunch (two mains and one appetizer, no drinks and no dessert) our bill came to $66 incl tax and tip. We randomly ordered some stuff, everything is BEYOND EXPECTATIONS. Too bad I didn't take a photo of our appetizer, but you can see my entree. People are also very friendly. I went to Il Nido for a casual lunch with 2 friends. The patio dining seemed perfect on a beautiful afternoon. We were barely greeted by our sour-faced, indifferent and rude waiter. We ordered three salads at $15 each expecting to get a full plate of salad. Instead the plate was appetizer size with a few lettuce leaves and a crumble of goat cheese. No bread. Bread costs extra. A coffee was 3.70 in a small cup and came luke warm. For tipping, the default option was 18%. Interesting that they expect hefty tips for overpriced food served by a rude waiter. Take my advice. Hidden in a covered plaza on the corner of Robson and Thurlow, lies Il Nido, waiting for you to try it out. Came here with the wife last night at 8pm. They have a fenced off terrace area that would probably be nicer during the warm season. Their entrance is a bit weird as they have a small dining area near the front with a flat screen TV. Their actual dining area was cozy and intimate. Decor isn't the best but it's not gregarious or anything. It was moderately busy when we got there. We ordered a half-litre of the Sangiovese Toscana and started with the fishcakes. They were pretty good, great texture but a tad on the salty side. The Sangiovese was very smooth and light on the tannins. Mains consisted of Papadelle (egg noodles tossed with veal and beef bolognese sauce and Spaghettini Puttanesa (calamari, capers, anchovies and olives in a spicy tomato sauce). The papadelle was good, noodles were properly cooked but the dish was quite heavy. That's just the way it is with egg noodles and the hefty meat sauce. I was stuffed. Wife had the Puttanesa and since I generally have to eat half her portions, I got to sample it as well. It was only slightly spicy but the addition of capers and olives helped set off some great flavours. Overall, our server was really attentive and his suggestions for wine and food were spot on. FYI, they also do half-orders on their pastas, in case you don't feel like getting carb coma later on. read more

Based on good reviews my Fiance and I came here for Valentine's night. Right away we were kind of laughing at the decor of this place, It seems to be trying hard and missing the mark. I don't care much about ambiance but this space is pretty cramped and generic. Unfortunately the food wasn't any better. We ordered Lobster Ravioli, and a Egg Noodle Bolognese, both dishes seemed to have the same base sauce which I hate to say was reminiscent of Chef Boyardee. Came here for a last minute dine out as it was one of the few places that looked decent in the area that was available. First I really liked the dining area, it's nice, small and rather intimate. It was easy to maintain a conversation as it wasn't flooded with people. To start I ordered the prosciutto, which was pretty much exactly prosciutto on a plate, nothing fancy but i'm ok with that because I wanted something really light. Next I got the italian sausage penne. While I did enjoy it i'm sure it would have just been amazing with fresh pasta, still not complaining here, still happy! And to finish I got the flourless chocolate torte, thinking pfft, no flower? Might as well just throw it on the floor. I only ordered it because it had the word chocolate. Well I got it and I felt like I was eating something closer to a brownie and I loved it! So a good little quiet place to go to if you want to have decent food and a conversation, i'm sure i'll be back. read more

Hey, I guess that's why we're such good friends. Anyways, our server wasn't impressed and pressured us to try different entrees. When we decided to all split one dessert, "Just one?" was the comment. We were full! The caprese salad appetizer was nothing to write home about. I had the cannelloni for dinner with seafood and ricotta, it was very tasty. The food is ok but no restaurant should charge $18 for a plate of pasta. But my only exception is Gnocchi. They have a sweet potato Gnocchi that is pillowy soft and not chewy. I don't really like the sauce that it comes with so I subbed it out for the bolognese and that was worth it. We also had the Crostini starter which was quite good but probably not worth $12. There were 3 of us for lunch and with no alcohol the bill came to $73 + tax. It's not worth the price even though the food is good. read more

I came here for 2014 Dine Out. Overall, it was just okay. I had a reservation for 5pm, which I switched to 5:15. We did happen to arrive early and were told the restaurant did not open until 5:30. The manager did engage in a minor argument with me over it. So I'm definitely confused as to how staff can confirm 5-5:15pm reservations and not serve us whatsoever until after 5:30. We decided to kill time at The Keg down the street, which led to spending more money than we wanted to. I was very close to changing my mind about our reservation and doing The Keg's Dine Out which is guaranteed to be awesome. So we returned for dinner and ordered. The calamari was very tender and delicious, although far too salty. The lamb shank comes with a red wine reduction. The sauce did not resemble this whatsoever. The spices and herbs were more moroccan style. The lamb was also much fattier than I've experienced at other above-average restaurants; also too salty. There were a few brussel sprouts and potato wedges included, which were very yummy. Dessert was mini-lemon tarts with raspberry coulis. A nice refresher and it satisfied me after a heavily flavored dinner. The service was very attentive and friendly. Atmosphere was clean and quaint but standard. This was a nice place to try but I didn't think it was worth a $38 Dine Out. Similarly, I could have gotten better quality and quantity at Mythos in North Van for $30. For all its class, this is a simple Italian restaurant in a well-hidden locale. Franco, the ever gracious owner and host of Cafe Il Nido, greets his regular (generally, business lunch) clientele warmly. Franco also has no shortage of offerings when it comes to wine. I would have to suggest though, that this is not the place for the value-oriented foodie. The food is sparse and deceptively, simply-made. I had the duck confit today, which was crisp and textured. The sauce was well nuanced. The vegetables, which I prefer prepared like my fish, was slightly undercooked - although today, it was almost to the point of being undercooked. Our last night in Vancouver was a free night to explore the town, so we stopped by here after having seen the reviews and how close it was to the hotel we were staying at. I had the Fettichini which consisted of eggplant, king oyster mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, etc and was very happy with the selection. The plate was very filling and beautifully plated. Two others ordered the Sweet Potato Gnocchi which I was offered a bite of and let me say it was AMAZING! It reminded me of the consistency of mochi, but slightly softer. If I had known what this was, I might have ordered this instead of the Fettichini! Prices were reasonable, service was lovely, and ambiance was very nice. We had left happy and full, ready to walk off what we ate and explore and enjoy a night in downtown Vancouver. read more
