Today was my first time at this Swedish outpost, and I fell in love the moment I turned the corner and saw it. Hipsters, groups of friends, young parents, guys in Hawaiian shirts were sitting around sleek black tables, sipping their coffees and wines; chatting and laughing and people watching. The ambience was stylish, vibrant, and sophisticated. The neon red sign (emblazoned with "ilcaffe") heralded the entrance of the store, which is located across from the historic Orpheus and in the same building as a beautifully designed residential building. Note: Only outdoor seating is available right now due to covid, but it was nice to take in the sights and sounds of Los Angeles, and the street ilcaffe is on isn't too seedy. Every time I went inside, there was always a swanky young duo ahead of me in line inquiring about the alcoholic options on the menu. The baristas were clearly quite knowledgeable and friendly about the subject -- I thought this was mainly a coffee shop, but I saw many a customer order wines and IPAs as well. I ordered my signature, the cafe breve, which isn't on the menu but they kindly brewed up for me. It was delicious: espresso notes are old school, strong and bold but without unwieldy bitterness. Ilcaffe uses their own beans, which I liked tremendously. My friend and I acquired a table outside and sat down to read / get work done. Despite it being windy, it was just a great place to sit and soak in the vibes. The pasta sisters truck right outside was a nice touch -- you don't even have to leave the place for dinner, and it closes at 9PM. Amazing! The main hassle I project is parking in DTLA. We were lucky and got a spot relatively quickly, two blocks down. I will definitely be returning, but thinking of finding parking next time gives me a headache. If it's Saturday or Sunday you're in good company. Chess players in the street outside. Maybe someone playing Jazz on trumpet. Locals selling their wares. You tour the rest of DTLA - bobbing and weaving, dodging unsavory characters - until you're on your way back to your hotel and find, the cafe turns into a wine bar at night! Pizza truck on fridays, homestyle food on other days. The servers are incredibly knowledgeable and point you to a wine that suits your palette. You grab two glasses. I come here often to grab a cappuccino while I do work on my laptop. The WiFi connection outside is solid & the vibe outside is usually pretty great. People play chess on the tables outside, often the same regulars when I go + some unique faces. Their vibe is always great to be around. I think this is one of few best espresso varieties in town. Personally, I prefer espresso based coffee over drip or cold brew. This place has great espresso. I had a hot latté, Ham & cheese Croissant which was very flaky & tasty. Will try cappuccino next. The place also has a selection of Italian wine & Italian deli. Do you know that Il Caffe originated from Sweden? Yes, it did and this is actually their second location so if you enjoy the feel of a European coffee shop, come over here for a meal or even just a cup of coffee. Nice open floor area concept with plenty of inside and outside seating. It's adjoined with an apparel store carrying Swedish made merchandise. Can't get any better European vibes other than this place. Pretty quiet place which ideal for working people. I actually saw several customers on their laptops while sipping on their coffee or biting into their sandwiches. I proceeded to the counter and was immediately greeted. I ordered a breakfast panini and while waiting looked at the sandwiches inside the glass shelves. You need to see that massive prosciutto sandwich! I wonder how many people could share that but it surely looked good. My panini soon was served. It's got gruyere cheese, arugula, tomato, olive oil, and salt on ciabatta bread. Very simple sandwich but yet very satisfying. Only regret, I didn't know that I could have requested additional prosciutto for only a buck. Literally just left me hanging for 15 min for funsies while they shot the shit After reading other reviews I realize the reason they were probably so rude is because the option for tipping was 15-20% or more for counter service. the most warming neighborhood café in downtown la! i've been coming here for about eight years now, and it's truly felt like home to me. the espresso is a rich, classic italian blend--something you don't often find in la, where many cafes have shifted toward lighter, fruitier roasts. the food has only elevated over time, now made with all locally sourced ingredients--you can taste the freshness in every bite. the staff is always so kind and welcoming, never rushed, always present. they take their time, and it shows. this café is near and dear to my heart. whenever i return from a trip and stop by il for an espresso, it tastes like home. read more

Coming from somebody who works in customer service myself, that attitude is absolutely reprehensible. Their abrupt attitude and lack if patience with my questions as a first time customer came as a shock seeing as I was the only person in the café. Perhaps if the food was of quality it would have made up for the service, or rather, lack their of. I came here because it was in the Eastern Columbia building, an incredibly beautiful blue stone art deco masterpiece. I heard of this place before coming to Southern California, and I just had to see it in person! All I can say is "Wow".... Anyway, enough of the building, let's talk il caffe! I went in to grab a coffee and a bite and rest for a bit. I was pleasantly surprised at not only the modern ambience of the shop, but also the friendliness of the staff, quality and taste of the food and the coffee. It's not just a pretty place, it has some great refreshments..... So even though I didn't get to see as much of this art deco building as I had hoped, I definitely enjoyed my short time there. I come down here for Chess Club on Sunday from 12-6 and it's such a perfect spot for it! The coffee is always on point and they have so many yummy sandwiches it's hard to pick. The outdoor seating is the perfect city ambience and indoors is quiet, relaxing, and they've usually got something fun playing on the TV. DONT GO HERE This is not nordic style coffee. Nordic Speciality is light roasted, and delicate. Maybe it is swedish owned but there is no difference between the coffee here and at starbucks. After seeing this place all over my social media pages I had it as a must try coffee place in LA for me. I've gone around trying so many with my girlfriend, but this one was not it. I ordered a drip coffee, and I was looking forward to a specialty coffee experience. I was served the nastiest dark roast known to man that I took 1 sip of and threw away. Shops like these need to adapt to the changing coffee culture. Old school panini press and dark roast shops are just not the vibe people want in coffee anymore. My girlfriend wanted a vanilla latte and they don't even have vanilla. LOL what kind of coffee place doesn't have vanilla. The atmosphere was dirty and messy and it is super out of date. Plus all the customers at the tables glare and stare at you while you are walking in. A DTLA staple for good coffee and good company. Located on the corner of 9th and Broadway with plenty of outdoor seating. Such a friendly welcoming staff with great coffee to offer. This is my go to spot if I need to work on my laptop and grab a quick bite to eat. This visit I got the avocado toast and just drip coffee, both amazing. They also have events on random nights which all usually fun. The stand up comedy they have occasionally is a lot of fun with great comics such as local Jay Flats. Definitely a hidden gem on theatre row located across from the beautiful Orpheum theater and a block from the Theatre at ACE hotel. Honestly...we walked in here, no one even made greeted us, let alone make eye contact. We stood there awkwardly and drank water and was ignored by two employees even! I guess we were invisible, until we decided to walk out the door and someone might have said, "bye." Also the people in here...barking dogs should be kept on the patio. It's a nice atmosphere (thought they had the same sone play the entire time, which was odd) and they have a nice selection of Teas (which I, a non-coffee drinker, can appreciate). I ended up getting the Chai, which I actually really liked! I'd recommend! I will say coming in for breakfast, you'll note that the options are pretty limited. I got the baked eggs with prosciutto. It wasn't bad, but just nothing entirely special. I also had a bit of the avocado toast, which wasn't bad either, but not sure it was worth the cost. The folks behind the counter at il caffe were exceptional, and I quickly came to realize why it was apparent that so many people writing or working were choosing to hang out at il caffe for the better part of the day. I enjoy the big windows, street views, the hustle and bustle of the city, the energy and seeing all people from different walks of life. il caffe was at the top of my list of cafes to visit because of their location in the historic Eastern Tower--an architectural DTLA icon. I ordered the oat milk latte and took a seat in front of the window facing broadway. I came in around 2pm so it wasn't too packed--just enough room for everyone to have their own table and an outlet for their laptops. I've found cafe heaven. Decent prices. Great drinks.
