I just knew i had to have breakfast under the famed Eastern Columbia building downtown after looking forward to this trip for years. The surroundings brought me back home to NY and whatever wasn't covered in the scaffolding definitely reminded my of Rockefeller Center. Hopefully i can't see the building in all its glory on next visit! Yelp says they close @ 9pm, but at 8:30pm was informed by staff that they just recently started closing earlier so fair warning. I'm mixed about il caffe. Drinks are good, but they charge a $1 extra just for requesting alternative milk (oat, almond, etc). Croissants are expensive! Would return, but they're in general on the pricier side. read more

Been a regular here for years and Il Caffe is undoubtably a cherished meeting place in LA's historic core, with lots of outdoor seating. It's a real Italian-style café. Almost everything is actually Italian: The coffee, the espresso machines and so on. Not only do they have excellent hot drinks and sandwiches made with fresh, local bread, but they also offer a selection of affordable wines and gourmet products. The servers are professional and friendly, so if there's a bit of a line ahead of you don't worry. Most of the customers are local. It's no secret that they don't have a parking lot, so if you write a review that complains about parking you're merely exposing the fact that you didn't do your research beforehand. They also don't have sugary syrups to add to your coffee, because, like I said, it's an Italian café and pouring high fructose corn syrup into coffee is not an Italian thing. If you require syrups there's a Starbucks two blocks away on 8th street. read more

I came here on a Sunday afternoon wanting some light grub before attending the film Sundance was featuring that Sunday. This location was not even 5 minutes walking distance away from where I was staying at the Ace Hotel so my mind was made up to go here. Their lemonade is really sour, 5 tablespoons of sugar did nothing to even slightly sweeten it up. I also waited about 20 minutes before they brought me my sandwich, and when I finally got it I was disappointed to say the least; the bread tasted like burnt cardboard that was left on the grill for a little too long. The modern, neat appearance of the place along with the free wifi helped to save this review from giving it less than 2 stars. Based off this sole experience I wouldn't come back. The abundance of positive reviews from other customers prove that there is something in il caffe worth coming back to... I just unfortunately did not share the same experience that afternoon and would like to hope that it was just a busy/off day for the staff. read more

Ill Caffe has something that I believe sets it apart from all the others. It's not usually advertised but it's a to-go coffee carafe! Year's ago I was looking to have coffee catered for a small photo shoot we were doing downtown. I called them and they provided. Not just the coffee for about 12 or so but gave me half n half, sugar, stir sticks and a dozen cups or so. Plus a plastic crate to carry it all. All they ask is what you return it that day or the next day. The price is crazy good too! (I won't mention it here) It's such a small gesture that gives people so much joy. Came on a weekday night when the shop was quiet with people studying and doing artsy projects. The drink prices are typical in any cafe these days ranging from $4 to $5. They have a long list of tea selection away from the latte selection. So, make sure to look out for that list too! The place offers various seating option making it a great place to hang out in any size group. But let's be respectful and keep your voice level to a minimum for those who use this as a working space. The baristas were nice to offer their expertise on the drinks. I would most likely come back if I were to be in the area to try their in house squeezed grapefruit juice. You see the pulps sunk at the bottom and the color of the fruit juice was amazing. Anyway, I will never give the guy that owns/runs this place my hard earned cash again, I find him to be exceedingly rude, he just rubs me the wrong way. An example of his rudeness, some other person ordered a to go item and he very graciously walked the item out to him and handed it to him in his hands, very kind. I live in the area and come here often. I think the food and coffee is really good and usually the staff. Today the long haired blonde guy gave me an orange juice and panini while I was outside with my puppy eating the croissant and coffee I ordered. I said I didn't order this but I was on a business call. He didn't even give me eye contact but the guys at the table beside me heard. He came back and very rudely took the plate away like 15 minutes later. Made me look bad as if I stole it. Everyone outside said something too because they said it was his mistake not mine. Pretty cool lil Euro coffee joint. Clean masculine lines, and very cool and chilled vibes. The barista helping me that night was a friendly and sweet. Parking: Paid lots all around, and street metered parking (watch for signs). My sugarista (hair removal) Colleen recommended this place to me when she had moved to her new place in downtown LA. After sugaring, I was starving, and wanted a quick to go bite for the drive home, and was lucky enough to come across here on my way back the parking lot. I ended up getting a Prosciutto Mozzarella Arugula Panini $10.50. It was a huge panini, and quite delicious! The paninis are already made, and you just pick the one you want in the case, and the barista grills it for you. My panini - The prosciutto was thinly sliced and wasn't overly salty, while the arugula's bitterness help countered the saltiness, and lastly, the mozzarella was super cheesy, and married everything together nicely. The amount of crunch the grilled panini had was excellent, and didn't crumble all over while eating in my car. Sadly though, I was hoping it would have came with a side of chips or something, but it didn't. It was tasty, but pricey too. Since I was in a hurry, I didn't order any coffee, and because if I did around 6:30pm, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night, lol! However, I will next time, and hopefully, it'll bump up the stars. Unimpressed. Got an expensive, very weak tea that was nowhere near its price. Was hungry as well, but sandwich/food selection was meager and expensive. Ambiance is suuuuuuper weird. A mix of of impersonal modern metal/gray scale + museum lobby. Not relaxing, welcoming, or by any means enticing. Also, extremely put off by the gigantic nude woman picture on one of the main walls. Wow. So original. I'm not necessarily against nudity in art; however, it was (in my opinion), a quite objectifying picture, as it was a photo that only included her body in the frame. No thanks. Not into the subliminal message of that kind of art, that only a woman's body, rather than her mind/face/character/brains defines her and makes her attractive. The owners are very passionate about the quality and freshness of their food and coffee, and it shows. The prosciutto panini, americano and cold brew are my go-to's. My sister and I order a matcha, one hot, one cold. I received two hot and I informed one of the gentleman the incorrect order. He was upset at his coworker and directed him to make a cold matcha. He took away the incorrect matcha and put it aside. Suddenly another person came to pick up their order and right I front of me told her that he added a free matcha to her order. Right in front of me! I felt very uncomfortable and unwelcome. I really like Euro caffes because they tend to have really comfortable seats and hip and modern settings and this cafe is no exception. Located in the Art Deco landmark Eastern Columbia building right next door to the cult Swedish clothing label Acne Studios flagship store, it's a perfect place to stop in for some java and rest your heels and re-energize after doing some high-end clothes shopping. They serve panini sandwiches and a few croissants and pastries. For the coffee connoisseurs, they serve stumptown roasts. I ordered an Americano while I was waiting for dinner and it was pretty smooth in flavor, very enjoyable. Good to see this place open up in this part of downtown LA.
