I recently came back to Ilegal and opted to eat inside their beautiful and cozy dining room. During my last visit back in the spring, I came for take-out and was given a tour of the dining room, so it was great to finally dine there. I love the ambiance. It feels so welcoming and comfortable. The chips and salsa were addicting. I love how they have a variety of different sauces, and some spicy some mild. I ordered the quesadilla, which was a bit odd for me to do as I never order a quesadilla. My thought process was that since I LOVED their burrito the last time, they must make a good quesadilla. And let me tell you, that hypothesis proved right! It was perfectly crisp on the edges, the chicken was tender, and the cheese was still quite warm. A great quesadilla is all about the mouth feel and they delivered in spades! And I haven't even mentioned the service. They're great at being attentive while not hovering. They kept our waters filled to the brim all dinner long and were always a moments away if we needed something. It's restaurants like these that really help Wilson Ave come to life. The tacos here live up to the hype! My friends and I came here for dinner on a weeknight. Around 6:30pm, it was easy for the four of us to snag a table in the back, near the back patio, but there is some seating in the front part of the restaurant as well. I ordered one of their mezcal cocktails with a Tajín rim (El Amante) which was yummy then we started with an order of chips and salsa, chips and guacamole and esquites. The esquites was fantastic, but we wished the guac was larger and came with more chips. For my entree, I ordered a tripa taco and a cecina taco. I cannot decide between a favorite because they were both so good. The tripa was crispy and tender in all the right places. I was worried about the cecina taco being too salty but that wasn't the case, it was perfection. We all appreciated how they served each taco with double corn tortillas, so they held up well. And of course, we couldn't leave without trying the churros. They were just the right size 2 people to share in my opinion but we were all pretty satisfied by then so we were ok splitting 4 ways. Illegal Taqueria was so good!!!! The Al pastor with the homemade tortillas are unmatched. I cannot describe how good they were. I could have ate a million of those tacos. $4 tacos and $7-$10 drinks, prices reminiscent of a pre-inflation time. My group grubbed on everything from grilled chicken, grilled shrimp, and al pastor tacos to pozole, rice and beans, and plenty of micheladas. Everything was top notch. There's a casual front area with high tables and stools, but if you want table service there is a seating area in the back, and even a backyard space for temperate seasons. We were only one of three parties there so our food came out fast and hot. I enjoyed the chicken taco most, the seasoning was just right and there was a slight smoky char on the meat that beat out the flavor of the shrimp taco. Pozole was spicy and hot, so satisfying on a cold day. They run happy hour and Taco Tuesday specials, so there are even better deals in store at this spot, a true neighborhood taqueria. read more

It's a rather small place, but it's lovely and has mostly tables and just a few bar seats. My sister and I grabbed some of the few bar seats. They didn't have an espresso martini but they had a cocktail very similar -- I forget what it was called, but it was a Latin spin that was fantastic. We had already eaten, so we didn't get any food. And they were standing to wind down, but they were very friendly and accommodating. It's a shame I left such a great place with such a sour taste in my mouth all due to one person. Went after work with a couple of coworkers and we loved it. The food is amazing- we shared guacamole with chips, each had about 2 tacos barbacoa gringo (chicken) tinga and my personal favorite chorizo! So good I ordered two! When it was time to leave we ask for the check and the nice waiter told us we could pay in the front. We head to the front and the woman asks us how we are splitting the bill. We say between three. She then turns over her screen and just shows us a total. No bill. I ask if that's the total for one person and she says yes. We then swipe our card and it asks for tip. My coworkers and I start adding up our food to ensure it was a correct amount and how much tip we would give. The woman watches us and says nothing. Does not even say let me give you the bill so it can itemize everything. She just stares at us. we each paid and tipped 20% each. I then ask for a receipt and upon leaving I notice the tip was already included as it is for parties of 5 or more. It is upsetting because it just makes it feel as if she were being sneaky on purpose. First of every customer should get a bill! Honestly it would make sense to have the bill brought to the table and then tell customers to pay in the front. Second- I understand it isn't her responsibility but the correct thing would have been to explain tip was added when she saw us discussing it in front of her. Huge disappointment none of us will be returning due to the lady at the cashier whose name was- Magdalena. We felt tricked. read more

I was dropping off 5 million packages at Bushwick Post next door when I passed this relatively new restaurant I'd never seen before. I decided to stop by and the verdict is...Yummy yummy yummy! I just finished my takeaway dinner and it was great! I ordered 2 al pastor tacos and esquites. The tacos were delicious, but that is expected when you see how they are made! I've eaten here a couple of times, and do highly recommend Tacos Ilegal. The tacos are very good, and are truly in the style of Mexico City street vendors. The service is very friendly and the decor is fun and modern. It's good to see that this business seems to have taken off. It's a five minute walk from my house, and I very much appreciate having them in the neighborhood. However, two things keep me from giving them a perfect five. My partner and I ordered an agua fresca and a soda, which of course, unlike a cocktail, don't require a lot of prep. The drinks arrived five minutes after the tacos were served, and only after I asked after them. Secondly, it would be great to see more vegetarian options on the menu besides the esquites, guacamole, rice and beans, and the nopales tacos. Great! When I first past walked Ilegal Taqueria I wasn't in the mood for tacos, but since I'm originally from Texas and always looking for good Tex-Mex in NYC, I took a glance in side. A woman, who I can only assume is the owner or manager kindly greeted me and gave me a full tour of the restaurant. I loved the atmosphere and the simple condensed menu. I was back in the neighborhood tonight and paid them a visit. The same woman was there and kindly welcomed me again. It's always wonderful seeing someone be passionate about their business. The Al Pastor tacos were fantastic. It was some of the juiciest pineapple I've ever had on a taco. For the price point, flavor, and location Ilegal Taqueria is a great place to grab a quick bite.
