The doctor was professional and seemed to be knowledgeable but the front desk staff is incredibly rude and withhold information. I had one appointment and after the appointment I asked how much it cost, I was told my Insurance would take care of it. I then went back to my follow up and a young brunette who clearly feels disappointed in her life's choices told me I had a 126 dollar balance. She had major begrudging Daria vibes all the while being passively rude. The doctor was good but due to the front desk staff, I cancelled my follow up and won't be going back to this establishment, definitely don't recommend. I had an appointment with Rachel Thakore, MD and I have never felt more dismissed in a doctor's appointment. I am a pale, freckly Irish person with a family history of skin cancer and when I asked for a baseline checkup on my skin, I was looked at like I was asking for something wild. Furthermore, I deal with excoriation disorder or dermatillomania or obsessive skin picking. My arms are fairly scarred after living with skin picking for 15+ years and when I asked for my scarring to be looked at Dr. Thakore said she didn't see any, which again is wild as my three year old niece notices my arm scars. I mentioned that I am in therapy & take medication for my skin picking and still Dr. Thakore advised that I file my nails as a form of treatment - what.? Lastly, I had a friend who went to a derm appointment and she left fuming feeling extremely dismissed about her eczema. About a week later we figured out that she had unknowingly gone to see Dr. Thakore also - so its not just my experience, but others too. Steer clear! read more

I have had annual skin checks for six years at Illinois Dermatology. I have also had irritating or unsightly Keratomas removed. Dr. Mandrea has always inquired about specifics related to my general health. I have recently had a recurrence of Prostate cancer. Issues related to my immune system and any future treatments for Prostate cancer are reviewed and taken into consideration. I know I am in good hands and my welfare is Dr. Mandrea's first concern. Milia diolite treatment didn't work at all when they said it should take 1-2 treatments. I tried to have hope and wait on it but nothing ever happened. I barely even remembered I got it done because it never worked and for $250 a session, that's really disappointing. I'm really disappointed. I'm writing this review because they prescribed me tretinoin to use for the milia and mentioned i could use it on my acne and it completely wrecked my skin (it's been around 6 months now). Recommended me to use it with vaseline on top of it. I usually have great skin which just felt like I was just overall really disappointed by my experience here. It's been 6 months now so the whole tretinoin purge should be over but my skin is in the worst condition of my life. read more

I've gone to Dr. Steve Mandrea for at least 7 years now. He's treated me for a number of skin issues, including seborrheic keratosis. I've also received Botox and dermal filler here. My experiences have always been positive. If you've got skin legions and worried it might be something serious, bring your insurance card because the biopsy and removal might be covered. This happened to me twice and I was thankful he had my information on file. I've learned it is best to schedule appointments early in the day. Avoid booking anything after 3 if possible. They tend to backup as the day gets later (not unlike most doctors). Finally, if you are worried about payment you can always ask the front desk for a care credit application. Cosmetic procedures usually aren't cheap so don't expect it to be different here. read more

I credit this practice and specifically Jang Mi Johnson with my life. I first went to this derm for a concerning freckle and took the first available appointment with a PA rather than the physician. She was incredibly thorough, a benefit I can only appreciate years later as a melanoma survivor who has seen several doctors less meticulous than she is. She was so good that I continued to see her for my 3-6-9 month visits out of network after I saw other dermatologists once my coverage changed. Jang Mi caught my melanoma early enough for as minimal treatment as possible and monitored me closely. Not only did she thoroughly investigate anything she saw that concerned her but she also reassured me once I was a wary cancer survivor. She never rushed my visits and took time to go over every concern I ever had. She also took a holistic approach, knowing that my husband and I were hoping to have children, and then adjusted my plan of care when I was pregnant and breastfeeding. She is amazing. I happily recommended her to several friends who enjoy her medical advice both cosmetic and vital! As far as the practice, I never had ANY issues with billing even with complicated private insurance and the aforementioned self-pay. I always had a less than 10 minute wait time, could bring my baby to appointments, found the techs and nurses incredibly warm and competent, and got sweet, swaggy free samples at every appointment. Take it from a homesick Chicago expat - GO TO THIS DERM. If I could fly in to go to Jang Mi every visit, I would! read more

I have not gone in for any service at this time, but after my experience trying to schedule an appointment I will never be going. My appointment got rescheduled three times because the workers were not knowledgeable about which of their locations offered the AviClear laser. They first rescheduled me because the booked me with the wrong provider, then again because they didn't book a long enough appointment. Then they said the next available appointment just for a consultation wasn't until a month later. If it is the businesses mistake, they should be doing everything in their power to get you in as soon as they can. They seem very disorganized. Also every time I called I was put on hold for a very long time. Overall just not a professional system at all and would not recommend trying to go here. read more

I had an appointment at 430, I called saying Id be 10 minutes late due to traffic and theres snow all over the roads, she says "unfortunately any later than 15 youll have to reschedule" I told her 10 why would I need to reschedule? So i said I will be there and thought that was an odd answer. So she answers "oh okay then" but I felt something off in her tone. I show up before the 15 mins and the door was locked and the lights were off. Then I call standing there at the door looking at my phone pulling on the locked door. Needed a dermatologist that was in my new insurance plan's network and could use the Xtrac treatment for Psoriasis. This place just straight up doesn't give a ____ lol Had an appointment on 6/9, the day prior they called to reschedule to 6/19, on 6/29 they called to reschedule to 6/29 ... no reason except they just needed to reschedule. Got there 6/29 in the morning (per the confirmation I recieved via email) was told I was scheduled for the evening but would see if someone could see me and an Alyssa Burkert (Physician Assistant) saw me. Sent my refill prescription to the pharmacy, turns out it wasn't covered, communicated via the portal and yes, she sent a different prescription but again not verifying that it was covered... it wasn't. I've emailed a couple of times explaining that I took the time to contact my insurance who confirmed neither prescription is covered and provided the name of a med that the insurance said they would cover. Nothing. Now I'm pretty much out of my prescription, and having to begin my search again while dealing with flare-ups. Should have seen this coming with all the rescheduling and then not even being seen by an actual doctor. Smh Update: It's been a couple of months since my initial review (on Google), nothing's improve in my experiencing this business, quite the contrary. Adding to my experience with this office team: When I show up for my appointments (early or on time) I'm kept waiting 15-30 minutes past my appointment time and then asked to go back to the room with no consideration or respect for my time or accountability for keeping me waiting; I was pretty sure if I showed up 15-30 minutes late they would cancel my appointment ... so tried it out to be sure. They did just that then said they would get me in at the time I arrived (absolutely no one in the waiting room and 1-by-1 team members gathering in that small office towards the back that you can see when sitting in the waiting room), I waited 16 minutes then left to go to a work meeting, because I believe in professionalism and respecting people's time). The only thing this place gives priority to is taking the money from you or your insurance, sends to me that the patient is only a means to an end. Keeps getting better: Contacted their billing department because my insurance couldn't provide me an EOB I needed to submit for a rebate. Billing department stated that they hadn't filed a claim with my insurance because the provider their putting it under is not currently in my network but will be eventually them the claim will be submitted. Once again, this wasn't communicated on the day of my visit, and again I've never seen a doctor they're just medical assistants, but understand they have to pretend that a doctor was treating me to get the insurance money. Also, as I was trying to explain the issue with lack of communication the rep "Angela" or "Angelica" (didn't catch it because I want expecting to have to update this... optimistic of me) just kept telling me it's okay. read more

It's been over a year since I've last been here, and in the past had a fine experience. This time, upon arrival, things just seemed a little sloppy. E.g. my last name was misspelled on the intake form. I also didn't receive an email or any kind of appointment reminder, and I'm pretty sure I made this appointment 3 months ago, so again, pretty sloppy on their part. I have, however, been hearing from them frequently - somehow I got signed up for their marketing emails and received something promoting Botox, or other high end skin care/elective superficial surgery of sorts, which I personally am not interested in. I ended up getting a cortisone shot in my armpit - what the PA recommended for an ingrown hair, and that hurt like a bitch, but I guess that's not really her fault. Seriously though, tears welled up in my eyes. I do think it mostly worked though. She said if it didn't, I'd come back in a few months and they'd slice it out. Hell NO am I coming back to this place after overall not getting good vibes or care. I'm glad I waited to finish this review, because in a week, it lost a star. I called 4 business days after my appointment to get lab results. They said they weren't in yet, and they'd call me when they were in. Instead, I got a call from the pharmacy telling me my medication was ready to be picked out - it turns out it was a script from the dermatologist - with no explanation of why I need to take it, how long I need to take this - and I didn't even meet with a doctor, I was seen by a PA, who didn't tell me that the next step would be to take these pills. How about they recommend I change my diet? Or give me AT LEAST SOME GD INFORMATION. I'm pretty appalled. read more

This is a long over due review, but I recently made an appointment for my follow up and I requested to see Tracee Blackburn but I was told she was no longer at this location. I had my first appointment with her over a year ago and I just fell in love with her and her assistant Holly. Tracee was very thorough, thoughtful and listened. She treated me as a whole. I had several other appointments for procedures and purchasing products and when she wasn't available her assistant Holly was there and she always took time to explain what she knew, made me comfortable and her cheerful demeanor was refreshing compared to the other Scrooges there. I loved my experience with these two ladies, even when the administrative staff was rude they made it worth it!! Love love loved them. I'll for sure be following her! read more

Ok. I should have looked at the ratings and comments before scheduling. Trouble is, I'd seen another physician here a few years back. She has since moved on. Anyway, comments in the other reviews are accurate. Waited in the exam room in my underwear for 45 minutes. When I dressed and went to the desk to ask when I'd be seen, they said they didn't know and asked if I'd like to reschedule. I said no. When I asked them to validate parking, I was sent downstairs only to discover I had to pay for parking. When I went back upstairs to ask them to cover this charge, the receptionist said that was not something they were willing to do. Tracee Blackburn, PA-C treated me 2 years ago. I made countless visits to dermatologists across both California and Chicago during the 5 years of having a giant cyst in my forehead (would swell to a golf-ball every month) After exhausting all acne medications and worried I'd have to deal with a golf ball sized cyst the rest of my life, I ran into Tracee who told me that I needed to get this removed and this was not ACNE. FINALLY! She was the first person to diagnose this correctly. I was able to get it removed by a plastic surgeon and have not had it return in 2 years. Thank you so much, Tracee! I was worried about having this for the rest of my life and can't believe I even put up with this for so long. I appreciate it so much! My confidence has never been higher. read more

Not only when checking in where they rude and dismissive (including wearing headphones when connecting with patients), but also when I was scheduling my follow up appiontment. I brushed it off, then I never received follow up information that I was told would be sent to me. I had a brown spot on my face I wanted to have removed with lasers. I was all set to use my tax return money because I know the procedure can be pricey and since I was going to drop a big chunk of change, I wanted to make sure I went to a really good place. I heard a few good things about Lakeview Derm...but I guess it was from people lucky enough to get an appointment. They seem to have lots of available appointments, but they don't actually like to keep them. I've been trying to get them to keep an appointment with me for three months. Each time I make an appointment, they call the day of to reschedule. 3 times already...not including today. Finally today when the receptionist called to reschedule, I'd had enough. I have to make special arrangements to leave work early each time. Each time they reschedule, I have to wait another 2 weeks for an appointment. The receptionist didn't even sound apologetic or tell me they would give me priority if there was a cancellation...or in any way try to accomodate me...seeing as I've been very understandng and patient the last 3 times I was cancelled on. Nothing. When I told the receptionist that since it was the 3 time they've done this to me, I wasn't going to reschedule and instead find another dermatologist. Her response: "That's fine" Click. Rude and unreliable...that's not what I want out of a dermotologist. So, I don't know if they're good dermotologist or not. What I do know is that they are very good at wasting my time and then being dismissive and rude on the phone. They also have a knack of making you feel like they are doing you a huge favor by even letting you have an appointment in the first place. Growing up, I cherished my relationship with my dermatologist. She coached me through heinous boughts of hereditary acne that plagued my adolescence and scarred both my face and chest, and also my confidence. Scoff as you like, but suffering the blows of fourth grade quips addled with hatred over a predisposition you can neither control nor hide is detrimental to an otherwise clueless ten year old. It was with my doctor's treatment and stern chats regarding self esteem that I "survived" a childhood of embarrassment. As my acne is long gone and the scars are lasered over, it never occurred to me to seek a new dermatologist when I relocated to Chicago. My tanorexic days were left in the Southern dust, and I have my mother's Italian genes to thank for golden skin in the summer that doesn't need a good burn to render the perfect tan. And no one in my family has needed sun-caused imperfections removed. Until someone did. An uncle with the same beautiful Italian genes as my mother recently passed from Melanoma gone unchecked. That was the wakeup call I needed to find the nearest derm to check every freckle that has made an appearance since that fateful fourth grade year. I have seen Dr. Lauren Fine multiple times over the last six months having this or that checked or removed since that wakeup call, and she has lived up to my expectations built from my hometown derm. She is kind, thorough, thoughtful, and unafraid to take action. My trips to her office are often riddled with nervous thoughts and wild scenarios, but Dr. Fine always eases my worries and ensures I receive the best care. Now I see her for all my skincare needs. Blotchy cheeks, fine lines, rosy nose- she does it all. And my favorite thing about Dr. Fine- her schedule. I never have a problem getting a quick appointment with her. We're talking same week, convenient hours, and minimal waiting. If you are in your twenties or older and have not been checked by a dermatologist, please do so. Most insurances will cover the cost 100%, and it is completely worth the peace of mind. And hey, you may decide to seek out a little perk up for those crows feet while you're there. read more

No issues with the doctors here - they are helpful and seem to know their stuff. However, he admin staff leave a lot to be desired. They are rude, condescending, and unhelpful. I was willing to put up with their attitude because I felt like I was getting positive results from Dr. Mandrea. But after multiple occasions of showing up on time for my appointment and waiting an hour or more to be seen, I am looking for an alternate provider. As other reviewers have pointed out, the delay is only made more infuriating by the fact that if you, the patient, are late or miss an appointment, the staff are quick to admonish you and threaten a penalty fee. I think Lakeview Dermatology should offer a $50 discount for every extra 30 mins you spend waiting to be seen. At least that would be fair- you miss your appointment, you pay the fee. The doctor misses your appointment, THEY pay a fee. When and if this happens, I'll consider coming back. read more

Dr. Steven Mandrea and his staff at Lakeview Dermatology are completely incompetent when it comes to PRP treatments for hair loss. I had 3 treatments with Dr. Mandrea and have had complications directly as a result of 2 botched treatments. The way he and his staff prevent pain and perform the PRP injections is ludicrous and after using a different provider I now question why I kept coming back. Unlike PRP injections by other doctors, he performs an extremely painful nerve block via nerves in both eyebrows. He then has his staff pump a ton of local anesthesia into the scalp for already numb areas. Unfortunately, I know now that it's common practice to use freezing cold ambient air to numb injection site and the total procedure takes less than 20 minutes. First botched experience: Dr. Mandrea decided it would be appropriate for his PA (who had little to no experience with PRP injections to the scalp - she actually shadowed him for my first prior treatment) to conduct the procedure. After the hour long numbing stage, she proceeded to inject in areas that weren't even numb and that I explicitly said I didn't need injections for! I had extreme pain during the treatment and excruciating pain for the days following the treatment. He proceeded to prescribe me synthetic painkillers that I had no intention of putting in my body. Dr. Mandrea wasn't even there for oversight or supervision. Second botched experience: I still have nerve damage near my hairline from injections that I was told "would go away in time." Even better, Dr. Mandrea's technician pumped me with so much local anesthesia that I had grotesque swelling that moved from the top of my head all the way down to my chin. My face was completely deformed for a week. He told me it was because of all the blood that was injected and "it's completely normal." Since finding a different provider, I've had virtually no awful pain or side effects. His treatments are long, painful and overpriced. In hindsight I should have gotten legal assistance. Don't make the same mistakes I did. Read reviews and find a provider with appropriate experience in PRP treatments. read more

I've been visiting this office since August 2008. Overall, I've had a pretty good experience. When I first started coming, I had really bad acne I was seeing the older Dr. Mandrea. And I thought he was very rude. On my second visit, he made it seem like I wasn't doing everything he told me because my skin wasn't progressing like he thought it should. He really pissed me off... However, his physician's assistant, Bernice Johnson, is amazing. If it wasn't for her, I would have found a different derm after my incident with Dr. Mandrea. She's the sole reason I decided to keep coming to the office. She has an amazing bedside manner, and is one of the nicest doctors I've ever met. When it became clear the regimen of medicines were not working on my skin, she took me off the antibiotics and put me on an all-natural vitamin combination (something I was relieved about because I hate being on antibiotics for a long period of time) and a medicated face wash (in addition to a couple other topical meds). Five months later, my skin is pretty much entirely clear. She even has me on a medication that is helping clear up the scars from the acne. I am pretty satisfied overall. read more

Anyway, we left an hour ahead and got caught in some baaad traffic. He got a call at 12:08 from them asking if he'd be there for his appt and he said he was but was running a little late she said it was fine, that they have a 15m grace period. We get there at 12:30 on the dot and the front desk girl says "oh we can't see u, the provider just left" I was LIVID to say the least! That is HORRIBLE customer service! I have been seen at Lakeview Dermatology for many years. I found Dr. Steve Mandrea after researching online for a Dermatologist that knows Rheumatology as well. You see, I have Lupus and scarring is specific to that condition. I was suffering through the Recession and really could not afford the out of pocket expense for services. Since I noted the cost of seeing the Doctor was much higher, I elected to see staff member to cut my costs. To my surprise, Dr. Mandrea comes in to take a look. He instantly reassured me he wasn't charging me so I relaxed. He made recommendations on what I could do to improve my skin over time. Fast forward many years later. My skin looks better than a lot of people that never had scarring! Kim did another Fracture laser on my face. I love her bedside manner. Not only does she explain in detail what she's doing and what effect it's going to have, she's as OCD as I am. She wants it to turn out perfectly. She is awesome! I have had the pleasure of visiting all three offices and working with a number of staff members. In every single case I was treated with professionalism and provided an excellent service at a reasonable cost. Unlike the other reviews, I have never waited more than a few minutes to see a staff member. I also like to be as close to the first patient at the beginning of the day or after lunch as I am able. Doctors are fresh and in an good mood, according to research. Being first typically means that others in front don't make you late. I went to this practice several times and was seen by a PA, Dr. Mandrea (elder) and his son, I believe his name is Steven. I never had any issues with the procedures I had, however, the elder Dr. Mandrea is a horrible, horrible person. He openly mocked me to the point that I got up and left the appointment- that was the last time I visited the place. His son was much better and although he didn't have the best bedside manner, he did listen to my concerns and treated me with respect. Important Update for Lakeview Dermatology! Many reviewers complain about the rude, insensitive, snotty front desk workers. Guess what? They have all been replaced. I have been going here for about a year and I used to get some entertainment value out of the incredibly rude staff. I mean, they were comically rude, it was like the Weiner's Circle show on TV. There was always 1 or 2 very nice front desk employees, and those are still there. However, the other ones have "moved on." So, although the rude front desk staff emerges a lot in these comments, it is no longer true. Secondly, I love Dr. Fine. I can always get in to see her within a day or two notice. She is super attentive, knows how to describe the products she prescribes, and is always willing to answer any questions. I would highly recommend seeing Dr. Fine, but I also have no basis to say that the other Dermatologist there is good or bad. The office itself is nice and modern. The entire staff uses iPads to document visits/symptoms, which makes it seem like an up-to-date place. I'd recommend to friends! read more

Have been a patient for a few years. Making appointments is relatively easy. That's why they get one star. The remainder of the experience is poor. I recommend you look elsewhere. Four main reasons: 1. Front office staff are blunt and as cold as a Chicago winter. Feels like you're intruding on their day and just a number to process. I was ok to suffer that since I'm really there to see the dermatologist. Arrived 5 minutes early. Paperwork had been completed previously but they wanted me to do it AGAIN. Fine. They were 10 minutes behind schedule. No big deal. That's OK for a doctor's office. Now, only the most recent... 2. I was led to the exam room and waited there without acknowledgement or update for 40 MINUTES. Seemed they'd forgotten about me! That's unacceptable! 3. Doctor arrives accompanied by a female "student". No apology for making me wait. Asks me to strip down (I'm male) to underwear in front of them both and no introduction made to the shadowing student. WTH? A doctor brings someone other than themselves into an exam room and doesn't have the common decency to (1) introduce the other person, and; (2) if that's ok for them to be present. Very unprofessional. Unacceptable! 4. Cursory exam conducted. I had several questions and what answers were given were minimal or curtly brushed off as "don't worry about that" with a simple yes/no. I had genuine concerns about lumps, abnormalities and other things being skin cancer and they treat me like a fool. Unacceptable! Disappointing because I prefer to be loyal. My dermatologist recently retired, and I didn't really know where to go. Truthfully, she didn't recommend anyone, so I had to find someone on my own. I called and made an appointment over the phone, and the staff seemed fairly friendly. They said they would try to get my records from my old dermatologist, but I told them she wasn't answering my calls, so good luck. Honestly, not sure if they ever did get the records, haha. My reason for three stars over five stars simply is because of the wait. It was over an hour to see the doctor. I usually try and schedule doctor's appointments on Thursdays, because it is my day off work, but I have a lot going on that day. Need less to say, having to wait an hour to see the doctor threw off my entire day. The doctor, Steven Mandrea, was incredibly nice though, and apologized profusely for the wait. What I loved about him was he didn't try to rush me out of the room. I don't have any major skin issues, but enough to see a dermatologist to help clear them up. I brought all the medication my old dermatologist came me, and he explained that they medication she gave me for my arms was for acne, and not the condition I actually have on my arms, so it was doing me no good all this time. He prescribed a new cream, and said it should help clear it up a lot, though not cure it. Apparently it's genetic and not curable. Rude. He also eliminated some of the stuff she gave me too. For example, she gave me prescription shampoo for dry scalp, when I've never had a dry scalp problem. I used it anyway, as she was the doctor. My old dermatologist also took away all of my soap products that I used to use from Lush, and Origins. She said I could only use soaps with 1-2 ingredients, and no scents. Need less to say, I haven't been happy with the soaps. Dr. Mandrea said I could start adding them back into my life, and I didn't need to completely change my life, like my old dermatologist tried to make me. I do have allergies to certain detergents, so I should keep that away, but the soap is fine as I never had a reaction to it. All in all great doctor, but be prepared to wait. I'm hoping my follow up appointment doesn't take nearly as long to be seen, but we shall see. I get the impression he is worth continuing to see, but not if the wait is always this bad... read more
