Most of their food is good. But they are liars. They list crab as a menu item in the seafood dish. It's imitation crab which is made of fish parts. I called to tell them I'm allergic to swimming fish and I said they could have killed me. She said there is no fish. I said send me a photo of the ingredients because I know the ingredients. Went with friends for dinner at Imperial Orchid on Tuesday evening around 7... A cute stand alone venue with plenty of parking. Upon entering you immediately see this front door buffer made of glass and filled with water with bubbles and colored lights...past that is a rather unusual ambiance...stark white! There was a Sushi bar with no direct lighting and a dining room with no baffles so when crowded must be some cacophany going on!. We decided to try their $19.95 Dinner Specials which included appy, soup, entre and dessert. The soup was very good, the beef on a skewer seemed like it had been some time since it saw a flame...not crisp and rather cool. The noodles on the table were outstanding as were the usual condiments plus the hot oil requested. Tea was hot and tasty! We compared dishes and found the General's Chicken and the Tangerine Beef were prepared in a thick goppy sauce with alot of sugar in it...With a lighter sauce the dishes would have been fine. We had ice cream for dessert. The overall feeling of the place was not warm or particularily inviting for a Chinese Restaurant....Booths looked like Ikea quality and were light, with little cushion and with a group behind you moved alot to be uncomfortable. read more

In my opinion, the best Chinese food on Long Island. I am VERY picky when it comes to Chinese food and I've tried at least thirty places and Imperial Orchid is the most consistent. I'd like to consider myself a Chinese food aficionado. ;o) Sort of reminds me of the Chinese food I ate growing up in Brooklyn, which was likely loaded with MSG, but it was delicious. The place is a bit outdated, which I don't really care about, it adds to the nostalgia for me. I don't go to look at the decor, I go to eat. I see others complaining about the carpet being dirty, but I eat on the table and my silverware is always nice and clean. This is not fine-dining, so I don't expect the decor to be perfect and completely up-to-date. Owner is nice, staff is quick and friendly. There are two things that bother me, or this would have been a five star based on the food. Their fountain soda, it's absolutely terrible. It's flat and just nasty. So, go with a can of soda and cup of ice. Sometimes their noodles they serve when you arrive are stale. I'd say it's about fifty-fifty on the noodles. If you love Chinese food, it's worth a shot. I've been coming to this Chinese restaurant for the last 20 years. I'm usually a weekly customer. The quality of food as declined over the past few years. This used to be my favorite local spot. Today I picked up dinner and I asked for the house noodles for my soup they told me it was going to cost a $1 extra. I said keep your noodles I'm never coming back to your restaurant. I've been a loyal customer for 20 years. The prices of the food has gone up which is understandable and I have no problem with but to charge me extra for house noodles is ridiculous with the amount of money I spend going there regularly. read more

The tables are wobbly, the lighting is dim and the decor is tired. Dirty carpets and silverware that look like it's been in play since the 70's. SERVICE Service was a bit slow. I have not been to the Imperial Orchid in YEARS!!!! As a teen I used to love coming here for "special" sit-down chinese food. The food was always delicious and the service impeccable. So much has changed since then I am not sure where to start! The interior used to be a very stereotypical chinese restaurant with a big tank with coy and beautifl asian decor all around. The new interior is very VERY modern and does not resemble the old version at all. I can't recall what I had but I remember being underwhelmed unfortunately. I live nearby, so I've been meaning to check it out for a while. Finally, Jen S. and I decided to give it a whirl. Since it wasn't a holiday, I had their combo price fix meal. It comes with a soup, an appetizer, a dinner, and a dessert. Obviously, the menu is limited for choices, but I had no problem finding something. An egg roll for the app and sweet & sour chicken for the meal. I haven't had that in a while. Didn't stick around for dessert, which was ice cream, jello, or something else. The long and short of it was the place was good. Staff was nice. Food was fine. Fits into that middle ground of Long Island Chinese food. If it is the closest too you, you won't be disappointed, but you might not go out of your way to be there. This is my go to place for Chinese food. I never come here people because it was dark and dingy .. they have undergone a massive facelift .. it's so pretty inside now and bright. Very good Chinese restaurant serves probably the best fried rice in the region. Nicely done won ton soup as well. Tried the BBQ beef skewers and they weren't so good. Lightly marinated in a very lite soy sauce lacked flavor. The Szechuan chicken and the tamarind chicken were both very good. Service is very fast and welcoming. Prices are fair as well. For $17.95 you get soup, an appetizer, main and desert which is a great deal. This is a good place to come enjoy a nice Chinese dinner. read more

There many Chinese restaurant and takeout places in the general area of Imperial Orchid. In my humble opinion, this place could be among the mediocre of them. I've had takeout from here a long time ago, and figured I'd give it another try, especially after their major interior renovation and inclusion of sushi to the menu . . . My favorite Chinese take out is the General Tso's combination platter, with a side order of fried wontons. I use these as the benchmark when rating any Chinese food restaurant. Tale of the tape: General Tso's Chicken - medium to large sized chunks of very tender, juicy chicken - chicken coating was not even a little crunchy, like perhaps it should be . . . - while the sauce had good flavor, it did not have even the barest hint of a zing to it, which is oddly and unfortunately absent in this dish at the majority of Chinese take outs - Not too much sauce, inasmuch as the chicken is not drowning in it I cannot agree that this is the best General Tso's chicken I've ever had, as other reviews may proclaim, but it does have a few strong points that at least point it in that direction, Fried Rice - dark brown in appearance, and I was unable to find any chunks of roast pork. . .if they were there, they blened in with the rice texture and tate-wise - bland, but tastes slightly better when mixed with the General Tso's chicken sauce Eggroll - has a relatively decent amount of roast pork in it, in comparison to other eggrolls - flavor was fine - what more can you say about an eggroll .. . ?! Fried Wontons - smaller portion than usual (10 vs the usual 12) - had a rather strange aspect, in that the center was tightly packed together, making it a little chewy/doughy and not crispy like the outer edges of each piece Whew - I expected more from Imperial Orchid, especially since their prices are a good deal higher for the same exact items than their closest competitor Hau Sing, which is located about 100 feet away up and across the street. Perhaps they need to pay for their new interior renovations, which are now complete, and the equivalent of dining in a hospital hallway (stark, sterile and staid). I will most likely return to try their sushi, and will update this review accordingly. read more

They have a great full dinner menu for $17.95 - the interior of the restaurant is not fancy but it's pleasant. Again, It's like going to Chinatown for real delicious authentic Chinese food. The restaurant had been here for well over 35 years and we have been eating there for the last 20. Past experience consistently good quality food, very good service and fair and reasonable prices, that's what kept us coming back over and over again. So what has changed.... Everything!!! They renovated the restaurant to changing the ambiance to a dining experience, blue lights , modern water falls new furniture. Totally new look. The food!!! I've been going to I.O. for years, my parents ordered food from there when I was a kid, and now grown up and moved out, I still sometimes make a trip over to there. The owners are very polite and the food is the best! It may seem a little more pricey than some other chinese food places, but its worth the extra few bucks cause everything they make is made fresh, especially their pork fried rice, which is so hard to find. I get so tired of getting that bland yellow colored fried rice that's pre packaged and shipped to chinese food restaurants. Along with great tasting food, the quantity is also worth the prices, I always end up leaving with a doggy-bag! (and I LOVE left overs!) The dining room is pleasant, and the service is very quick. We ordered Szechuan chicken and shrimp, sesame chicken and shrimp with vegetables, all of which were pretty tasty. Our only issue and the reason why it doesn't get an additional star is the less than perfect service. We waited a long time for our meals--probably 45 minutes. By far the best Chinese around. I don't even go anywhere else. When I was in college I would wait all semester just to come home and get an order. General tso and sesame chicken are better than anywhere else's. Anything else I've had was also more than adequate. Personally I feel like most places use a shred out chicken and then cover or fry it with some sort of corn starched/syrup surrounding that you have to open up to find the chicken. Sauces are thick and gooey. IO has full pieces of chicken that you cut right through and see white meat. All of the vegetables are crunchy and fresh. Unlike most places that you can barely tell apart that are sitting in a small shopping center that we are accustomed to on Long Island probably next to a pizza place, deli, and super market, IO sits alone and is more like a restaurant. Old fashioned, real feel and admittedly out dated.. I don't care. I can go to Aji in bay shore if I want ambiance. I go here if I want to eat real Chinese food on a regular basis. There's something to be said for the owner who answers the phone on the first or second ring every time for years and is always present, polite standing suit and tie, hair perfectly combed paying attention to every detail. Not your average hard to communicate foreigner barely caring about what u order. As of this week I am worried because they have changed their sign to update for sushi which I am happy about but I do not see my favorite guy at the front desk and there seems to be three people sitting promptly in his place. The chicken was fried nicely the sauce was very good but that's all it was was sauce. There were no vegetables ( onions, peppers etc) other places have that in it and it makes a difference. The white rice was good. I'd give the dish a 7 I will say my husband would get it again!! I had the fried chicken wings which I liked and the combo fried rice nice size shrimps , long pieces of chicken hardly no pork or beef I believe one of them should have been there and the rice was too brown and a little hard.
