This is a nice location for Cal Fit in Carmicheal. I have been here several times and like the layout. It has a decent amount of cardio machines and weight areas. I do wish there was more space for workouts away from the machines. There is one small space but its often being used. I love the cardio movie room. It would be nice if this facility addressed the homeless tweaker issue that has been brought to their attention multiple times on the side of their property right in front of where we live. It is disgusting to have to see this, smell the strong piss smell and pick up needles that lie around so that our child and other children in the complex dont have to worry about stepping on. It is on your property, do something about it. Our apartment manager and residents have brought it to your attention multiple times. Our whole family goes to this gym. It is very convenient that there is a children's room for children. There is someone to look after the children while you go to the gym. This complex has two more swimming pools, a jacuzzi, and two saunas. But one is not working at the moment. I recommend it and it is not expensive if you buy a subscription for your family. read more

I've been a member of CA Family Fitness, now In-Shape Family Fitness, for about 8 years. I've gone to the Watt/Arden gym for most of that time. Unfortunately things have really gone down hill since In-Shape took over. The gym is much dirtier than I've ever seen it - pretty obvious filthy equipment. I never saw that when it was CA Family Fitness. A lot of the equipment is out-of-order and looking pretty worn. They have also replaced the sanitary wipes, for sanitizing equipment, with paper towels and disinfectant spray...really iffy cleanliness and obviously a much cheaper option. read more

My husband and I have been members of this gym since the 1990's. It's close and has a good variety of equipment. Heidi works vey hard to keep the ladies' locker room clean. (The men's bathroom isn't quite as sparkling.) However, despite the friendly, welcoming staff, I have noticed a definite lack of repairs since In Shape took over. First of all, the hours are much reduced. There's no child care. But the biggest complaint I have is the lack of a master key for the lockers. It broke I hear. This has been going on for several months. If you forget your locker combination, they have to come in with a crowbar and forcefully break open your locker. Absolutely unacceptable! It's not the manager's fault, it's the In Shape bureaucracy. And now many of the locks have been turned horizontally, making it a challenge to find a usable locker. Come on In Shape, please fix this problem! Also, how about stepping up maintenance when a light goes out or a shower head breaks? Thank you! read more

I've been a member of CalFit for a very long time. I've enjoyed personal training sessions, Step and Zumba classes, and I like the selection of equipment. Covid really derailed me and I did not return on a regular basis (kept paying my dues however) until I discovered Shawn's kickboxing class. It's good to be back! What great fun, good music, and energy. Shawn's classes are the best of what I remember pre-covid. It's my hope that new ownership will keep his kickbox classes going. read more

Started a consultation with a personal trainer. Not going to call out who it was but I waited there 30 minutes for her to arrive and she never showed up. I am trying to get out of my comfort zone and someone with very bad anxiety was frankly horrible. Why would I pay $40 a month for the gym and than up to $300 for that treatment? Seems like so many things have gone wrong there, I was really trying to like this place and enjoyed the circuit class until I was literally told I wasn't supposed to attend. No one had ever told me there was a fee. Lea apparrently was told by trainer Mimi I was not supposed to be there. I am so sorry no one ever told me there was a fee for this. I was very reluctant to post this but perhaps it would be nice for management to train their staff better and treat members with more respect. My husband keeps telling we should consider another club. However, I have found management much more refined and caring at the Arden Gym. The beautiful waterfall and swimming pool add a lot also. Kate, in particular , is very sweet and accomodating. She is attending Sac. State and is very intelligent. Nason and Jason were very helpful also. I think I will be much more comfortable at this particuar gym. My daughters son and husband contracted Hand and Foot disease after a visit to this gym. They used the childcare facility once. My grandson does not attend nursery or day care, he's 17 months old. Seems obvious that the conditions here are not sanitary. I hope the health department looks into this. Look out for spots on hands and feet, fever, fever blisters on sore throat and time off from work since this is contagious. They don't deserve a star but a good scrubbing. This club used to be absolutely perfect for my little family. But they recently took out the childcare for the older kids. My oldest son just turned 3 and is very sad that the big kids side is no longer available. I'm also extremely nervous for summer break to start. I just don't understand how the 10 year old kids are going to have any kind of fun without a baby getting hurt. My youngest is only 10 months old, and I'm honestly afraid to have him in that tiny room with all the older kids. If it wasn't for the ABSOLUTELY AMAZING childcare staff at this location, we would already be gone. Not sure if our family will be staying come summertime, but if you have kids I strongly recommend finding another location. I am a transplant from the bay area, luv the bodycombat offered by 24hrs fitness. I took a membership with Calfit and they are expensive more than 24hrs to my opinion, luv the gym but mostly into the group exercises. i tried the cardio kickboxing at this location scheduled at 9:35am. it was a big disappoinment. the instructor started late, the class is a shambles, everybody is doing their own thing, no choreography, and the instructor has no energy and enthusiasm, i left the class half way. I hope Calfit comes up with a class that better than this. read more

I would have liked to give Cal Fit 5 stars, truly I would have. However nice the gym may be, I cannot excuse the behavior of the membership manager. I signed up for a month-to-month basis with Russel. He seemed kind and genuine, and I explained to him that I did NOT want a year membership.He told me that he would honor my request, and after my 2nd month, lo and behold, they started charging my card for the next 2 months (even though I paid for the 3 months when I sat down with him). He told me that it seems that we both had a misunderstanding...um no, I clearly told him what I wanted when I signed up, and he scammed me.. Sorry Russel, you seemed like a nice guy, but your actions proved otherwise. My advice to you all out there, go somewhere else, and save yourself some headache, (and your money). Updated 11/20/2013 I had a representative call and tell me that I should have read the contract before signing. Lesson learned, don't believe whatever you hear (no matter the ranking of the person you are talking with), and read the contract...even if it's a gazillion pages long. read more

I mistakenly went to the CalFit close by instead of this one where I set up an appointment with Mike(??? it's been almost a year, I've forgotten his name). Mike (let's just call him that) was super nice and he wasn't pushy. I told him I just wanted to do the trial before I commit to signing up. After the trial, he would discuss rates with me. One week passed, and I decided it wasn't for me budget-wise. No hard feelings. A few days later, I get a call from someone who was not Mike. This guy, I wish I remembered his name, was an asshole. He tried to reel me back in, but I said it just wasn't happening. I couldn't afford it, thanks but no thanks. He asked me if my health and fitness mattered to me, and I said yes, but I wasn't going to break my back and bank for it. He knew he wasn't going to get anywhere anymore so he said, "Well, okay. Thanks for your time. I guess you're not really committed to being fit and healthy." Then hung up. EXCUuuuUuuUUuuUSse ME??! Any chance of me changing my mind in the future is gone now, thanks to that fuckwit who talked to me disrespectfully. I don't need a gym to be healthy and physically fit. No one does. DON'T GIVE YOUR MONEY TO CALFIT - MAKE THEM EARN IT BY IMPROVING FIRST. 07/2017 -- Update To My Review Since the first review I moved to another city and started going to another CalFit location. I've since canceled my membership. Originally I gave them 2 stars, now it's dropped down to 1 star. The second location, in Rocklin, is just as gross as the one in Carmichael. Nothing is ever cleaned, locker room is often out of paper towels and soap. Parking is a joke. And they make members wear wrist bands because they let non members use the sports facilities. The reason I dropped it down to 1 start is because the service never gets any better, despite friendly and constructive feedback. Basically from the top down CalFit is only focused on sales. Their staff is undertrained, unsupervised, and the turn over is incredible. When I called to cancel my membership they refused to cancel over the phone. They insisted that I must go into the original location that I signed up at (35 minute drive away). After a lot of persistence I was told that I can cancel if I go into the local location in Rocklin. The reason they want you to go in is so that they can hard sell you to stay and keep retention up. Canceling my membership was such a hassle, and even then they still swindle you out of 1 more month because it's part of the contract - I agreed to it when I signed up - fine - but it just reinforces their motives. All they care about is extracting as much money as possible out of you. They don't invest back into their gyms or staff. CalFit sucks. And like I said in my first review it's too bad because they have good locations - they just have awful management. I would have gladly continued paying $80 a month for my membership for years if they just cleaned, trained and supervised staff, and invested a little back into their gyms. Now Lifetime Fitness has come to town and they are eating Calfit's lunch. Thank you Lifetime - please put Calfit out of business or at least bring them to their knees so that these meat heads can get their heads out of their A**es and make the necessary changes to improve. Old Review 2015: I joined Cal Fit about 6 months ago. I usually go between 2-4 times per week. The gym is a lot more expensive than 24 hour fitness, but it's not much better. I like the lay out and they have a lot of equipment, but the gym is filthy. I don't think I've ever seen them clean anything. I've been there at all hours and I've never once seen any cleaning staff or anything. The men's locker room always smells terrible, they often run out of paper towels. No one seems to disinfect or clean anything... Seriously the gym is disgusting. I'm also a member of Planet Fitness in Citrus Heights. PF is much smaller and does not have a pool or anything fancy, but it's VERY CLEAN. They have cleaning staff there 2 - 3 times per day. It never smells and they also have cleaning spray bottles and paper towels all over the gym. It's also about 1/4 of the price. Cal fit on the other hand has nearly no cleaning supplies. They often have only 1 or 2 employees (usually teenagers) who mostly text on their phones, lift weights while they are on the clock, or hang out and chat with their friends instead of picking up a bleach wipe and cleaning the equipment or locker room. Once my 1 year membership is up, I'll probably join gold river racquet club or Arden's hills country club. It's too bad, cal fit would be great if they would hire better staff (or at least supervise them), and CLEAN. They should be cleaning everything at least twice a day. read more

Working hard to be the #1 check in at this location! :) I have had gym memberships at a number of other organizations, and I am truly pleased with CalFit in a way I never thought I could without an expensive high-end membership. This location is smaller and very family friendly. I frequently see parents working out while their kids run amok in the playpen area, and are never allowed to roam free and bother the guests or create a danger to themselves or others. Even at peak times (I come after work most days), it is never too crowded to prevent me from using any machines or weights. Everything is VERY clean, and staff are very pleasant. I am overdue to check out the pool! The only reason there is not 5 stars is because the classes are pretty subpar here. There are not that many offered, and the ones that are have minimal participation and frankly, look a little sad in action. Fortunately for me I'm not focused on the classes, and there are a dozen other locations I can drop into (which I have!) and attend some awesome groups. read more

The new manager is a young 30 year old female with poor leadership skills. The lack of respect and maturity was passed on to the staff and the other young female employees are very rude and disrespectful. I went in and asked for the 7 Day Free Trial that's advertised everywhere -- there's a banner on this page right now. The Sales Manager had no idea what I was talking about. I stressed that I wanted to try it for at least a day or two before signing up for anything, and I got the hard sell. I did want to try this place out so we settled on signing up for a membership, with the opportunity to cancel and get it refunded/no fees if I decided I didn't like it within 5 days. Fine. It's just like the 7 Day Trial except... more paperwork. And more risk. And two fewer days. Whatever. I didn't appreciate the hard sell, but I get that it's how the business works. I just think it would behoove the managers to actually listen to their customers once in a while. I was told that I'd get a free day of personal training and when I declined, he insisted. I reminded him that the entire reason I really wanted a trial before signing on was because I wasn't so sure about the whole people-everywhere gym thing, and I prefer to exercise alone. He was quick to assure me that this is a friendly place! Not like that meat market 24 Hour Fitness, this place everyone just wanted to be friends. I would have preferred a meat market. Nobody hits on the sweaty, angry looking girl, that would have no effect on me. I thought I was clear that I didn't want to make friends! I'm sure the "friendly" atmosphere is a perk for many people, but it's an odd business decision to talk about the friendliness and social environment at length right after a potential customer says they like to be left alone during workouts. Hm. The manager that showed me around and signed me up was nice enough, though, just,,,enthusiastic. Which could be seen as a positive! He's brand new, so all the reviews about the sales manager being rude or lying are irrelevant and don't apply to the new guy. I wasn't that impressed with the gym itself. The TV didn't work on the first elliptical I tried, and the second one was wobbly. I felt like I was going to tip over on it. I'm not particularly heavy and I have pretty good form, not bouncing around or anything, so I don't think I was doing anything to make it do that. The other machines were nice enough, functional at least. The setup of the gym is a little awkward, and while there are an abundance of cardio machines it's clear that some are the "good ones" while most are old and you can see people choosing carefully. You don't have the same luxury in the weights area, there seemed to be just about one of everything. The pool had the potential to be nice. The deep end with the lanes is small, only three lanes, but it could be nice. It would be cool if there were signs posted or employees watching out, telling the little kids to not hang out in the lanes. There's a huge freeplay area and just three lanes, but there were kids (and sometimes adults, which was even worse, they should know better) hanging out in all three lanes. That sucked. I don't have a vendetta against CalFit, I swear. The Zinfandel location is REALLY nice. Go to that one. That one is awesome... they probably have some of the same shady business practices, though. I did end up cancelling during my 5 day trial. As of right now they earned that extra star by not stealing my money like so many people have reported. If I'm charged for something I already cancelled I'll report back, but I think they actually did right this time. Ok so Cal fam made me an offer I couldn't refuse to try their gym, and I am happy I took advantage of it I have been happy with them ever since! I have been to 24 hour fitness since I was a kid so this is what I am comparing them to, but I like them so much better! It's much cleaner, the class selections are better, and the teachers are really well trained. At 24 there are always times to avoid going due to crowds or creepy people but I haven't had that issue here which allows me more flexibility in my work schedule. My only suggestion? ? A few more yoga classes, they are my favorite!!!! read more

This review will be based off of three types of experiences: membership enrollment, gym check-in, and pool visits. Let's start where it all began, membership enrollment. In all honesty I already had a membership for planet fitness which I only used for massages and tanning. $20 a month and I was happy. However my best (and only) friend is pregnant so our favorite thing to do this summer is beat the heat! How do we do that? By swimming in pools of course (because lakes are infested with creatures that eat you). Since she was already a member at this location she brought me in to be a guest. Probelm was, summer lasts longer than one day. That's were Keevin came to the rescue. Although a salesman, he wasn't pushy and annoying like they usually are. He originally was going to set me up with a free two week trial, but when the two weeks ended what was I to do?! I asked about membership pricing and holy moly did I about have a heart attack. Let's be real, totally not in my budget. So I told him real and upfront it couldn't happen. So instead of telling me that I'd HAVE to pay, he asked me what I needed from him to get whatever it was I wanted to get out of this experience. So I told him my financial situation, how I really only come for the pool and he responded with "let me help you out". This is when he pulled out the big guns! Up walks Anre (no really, there's no "d", although he likely does have one!). Anre is a manager (or supervisor of some sort) and after hearing my situation he literally dropped the membership price to what I call a blessing! On top of that, he helped me waive the enrollement fees since I had to pay extra to terminate my planet fitness. But wait, the customer service gets even better! My husband also uses planet fitness so we considered switching him as well. As we discussed it we concluded that since my husband travels for work and is only home 3-4 days a month, the membership wasn't reasonable. Rather than being pushy and manipulating things to make it sound like I must enroll him too, they empathized with my situation and told me to just speak to a manager if my husband ever wanted to come visit and swim with me. Like WOWZAS! I can't get over how kind and generous these two men were. Snaps to Keevin (yeah that's really Kevin with an extra "e) and Anre (again, yeah there's no "d") you da real MVPs! Ok so after enrollment came my visits which always started off with a card scan at check-in. Let me just say, for a bunch of attractive young millennials, this front desk crew is the kindest, most genuine hard working group of young adults. Shout out to Jacob who always serves with a smile on his face and is quick to fulfill my obnoxious requests without hesitation! Alright so after check in, I always turn my back to the weights and head straight for the part that really matters: the pool! Now let's be real, summer time at a gym pool can be really relaxing (don't be fooled, my pregnant friend and I can't swim, we just sit on our pool noodles and gossip about our own marriages) but in real life it can be a fricken splash zoo! Children can take up the entire place, jumping, kicking, splashing, killing the vibes. But there's no need to fear, lifeguard Steven is here!!! First off, ladies if he is single, you better get on it. Steven is a hunk, and a total sweetheart. He does a great job monitoring everyone's safety and an even better job with the kids. When they tend to have a little too much fun, Steven kneels down to their level and kindly reminds them of the rules. He's never demeaning but rather friendly and encourages everyone to have a great time. Steven, you da bomb! So this is my experience with this gym. Unfortunately if you're a super pig headed, high ego, protien shaking, weight droppin jerk I don't have much to tell you about the "workout" atmosphere. But if you're just looking for a family friendly gym to make your second home, then this is the place! read more

If you enjoy water aerobics, and want a challenging class, don't join Cal Fit clubs where Collette teaches (Carmichael and Arden clubs). Her class descriptions are "High intensity, intense, powered up, fast paced, designed to challenge." In reality, those in her class tend to be older and sedentary, and (understandably) don't want to move fast. Faster persons wanting a hard workout are blocked from moving and getting a serious workout. Management tried, but was unable to get Collett to designate an area for faster persons - despite the danger of faster persons colliding with slower persons. And management advises they won't force Collette to take that safety precaution. The rest of the classes and teachers and safety are good. read more

I already know that writing this review is going to make me seem like a di*k but I don't care. Honestly, is there a standard test you have to pass to be a salesman or manager at gyms? I'm being deada**. Because they all seem dishonest, douchey, immature, rude, and incapable of taking responsibility for anything that their staff has said. How is one of your employees going to give us a quote of a price and then when we come back to update our membership based on information that YOUR employee gave us, you tell us that that's not what YOU said and you don't know how anyone could have given us that price? Bro, you all work for the same company. That means you REPRESENT that company. You should uphold and honor what one another says and if what someone said was actually inaccurate, then train your employees better. I mean really, do they all go through a 30-minute training session where they tell you "Just say whatever to get people to sign up because we won't hold you responsible for whatever you lie about"? How is it that the dude at the front desk, the trainer, the guy on the phone, & the manager all say different things? That makes no sense to me. There is NO consistency. "It's $39" "No it's $74." "There's a family special." "There's no family special if there's only three of you." "There are no surprise fees but here's a random $45 charge." "You get to bring one free guest a month." "You have to pay $15 for ever guest who comes and it's ALWAYS been that way." What the actual f**k is going on? No one knows. When my mom and I went to inquire about the surprise "enhancement fee", the man was so rude to us. My mom is Filipino and in that culture, people barter. So she always tries to find discounts and ways to save money and as she was doing this, I watched as the man was getting visibly annoyed and then instead of just politely saying no, he asked my mom her age in a very patronizing and demeaning way. When my mom got uncomfortable, he said "I'm just trying to see if you qualify for this discount you want so badly. So how old are you? I'm seeing if you qualify for the senior discount." YOOOOO..... That was SO, completely unnecessary and none of you guys have seen my mom, but she literally looks like my sister. Though this might sound like a shallow complaint as asking a woman's age or weight is socially taboo, I wish I could have recorded this conversation and posted it because that man was not innocently asking my mother her age because he was trying to help. He was being unecessarily rude. I did not want to give this place a one star review, however, because despite these awful experiences, there are some really great workers who acknowledge the inconsistencies and are honest about it. We have dealt with about three people who have been super helpful and sweet to us so I did not want to only give 1 star to them specifically. Childcare at this location is very careless with young children. I have a two year old and a 6 month old child and we frequently go to this gym. I have observed multiple times my 6 month old being placed in a rocker and other older children treating him like a toy (rocking him, putting blankets over him, throwing toys) and employees being completely oblivious. They just closed the other childcare room for 3+, so now the older kids will be locked in the same small room as the infants...being as I have three boys ages 10, 5, and 3 I'm not sure how I feel about this decision come spring break and summer break. I just don't think 10 year olds should play in a small room with babies crawling around. I may close my account and move my kids to another gym. This is just ridiculous. And the outside area they are thinking of opening for the kids over summer break looks like a cement death trap for little ones.
