We are locals and ate here a year ago and had a bad experience. We gave it another try this weekend. I really pushed my wife to go because I like the ambiance. Bad decision. Headlines: Service - waited 15 min to have any interaction with our waiter. When she arrived she was very short and not friendly. Finally put in drink order and appetizer and appetizer arrived before drinks. Drinks arrived 35 min after arriving. Food - Burrata appetizer was excellent. Sausage pizza was not good. Super soggy, limited sausage and a ton of greens that overwhelmed the pizza. We eat out regularly downtown. We will stick to going to Melfies and Monza for pizza. No more visits here. read more

I'm really torn on this review. The service was good, and the waiter was awesome. The food.... danger zone. Ok, the pros: They have valet parking in the back of the place. They have a nice outside seating area, and I like the wood feel of the place. I didn't notice a lot of noise, but perhaps that is because we were outside. The wine was excellent. The pizza that a friend ordered was tasty, and the olive appetizer (I love olives) was really good with the pita. The cons: My $24 entree. I ordered the CORNETTI. I was told that the pasta was homemade, and so I was excited to try it. The pasta was good... The bad, which is worth the major star reduction was that the squid TASTED LIKE AMMONIA. I barely ate but a few bites before I bit into one. It was HORRIBLE. I brought the leftovers home to try to figure out what was bad in the dish. Apparently, they served me a giant squid, known for storing ammonia in their muscles. Giant squid are indigestible for humans. Thanks chef. :( The problem I had is that I could SMELL the ammonia. We recently visited Indaco early on a bustling Saturday night. If you haven't been, it's a long, shotgun restaurant with wood burning oven scents that welcomes you as soon as you enter. Indaco's wood and stainless lighting elements are simple enough for you to clearly see that the "food is the star". Quickly escorted to our table upon arrival, we began to peruse the 'Rustic' Italian menu. Our server quickly approached to take our beverage order and explain the menu. As she did so, a gentleman also stopped by. He said that he was the manager and he pointed out the wine list to us. He said he was part of the team that helped to put the list together and if we had any questions he would be happy to help. Nice touch. The menu offers affordable prices and although easy to read (5 sections - Piatti, large plates, Antipasti, Pizza, Pasta and Contorni, sides), the selections seemed so interesting that it was hard to decide what to order. We started with the Castelvetrano Olives, a must try for olive fans and 24-month aged American Iberico Prosciutto, which, in the end could have been fought over had we not ordered two. We also tried the Wood-Roasted Squid Salad. This was my selection and it was served with arugula, pickled peppers, potatoes, olives, capers aioli, chickpeas and radicchio. It was exceptional! The last in the line of appetizers were the Pumpkin Blossoms. For those of you (like myself), who may not be familiar with what a pumpkin blossom is, it's a delicacy made with the flowers of a pumpkin plant. These were delicately wrapped and served with baccala (salt cod, by-the-by), pickled peppers, lemon and aioli. Here's a bit of a fun fact regarding Indaco's Pumpkin Blossoms. This was Indaco's James Beard Foundation Local Dish Challenge Entree. If you take a picture and upload it to Instagram with #charlestonSC and #jbftasteamerica it may help Charleston win $10,000 for Feed the Need. The entrees we ordered were as delicious as the appetizers. My husband and I ordered the two specials of the evening. Their ingredients demonstrate the creative offerings that Chef Robert Berry can come up with. Special #1 was Porchetta - Pork shoulder slow roasted for three hours and served medium with tomato braised runner beans, topped with Castlovetrano olives and calaibrian chilies. The pork was fork tender and won wave reviews. Special #2 was The Casonce - pasta filled with mousolini (sic) of quail, foegras, chanterel mushrooms then sauteed with parmesan and butter topped with chanterels. Butter soft pasta pillows graced my bowl. The flavor was out of this world. Although I downplayed them a bit so I wouldn't have to share them, a few still got away from me. If this dish is an option during your visit, I'd highly recommend you indulge yourself and order this treat. At first glance, the "pasta" section of the menu seems simple enough, but each dish is an exquisite assembly of ingredients. The Camera D'Aria - Shrimp, scallop, blue crab and green onion were rolled and resembled sushi. The Eggplant Lasagnette was served with a quick tomato sauce, capers, ricotta, mozzarella and parmesan. Both were as beautiful as they were tasty. Our friends ordered 2 of the pizza choices. I remember our friends said, "If it's too much, we can take it home to the kids." Enter the Cerigonola Olives Pizza - with mozzarella, Calabrian chili (#hot) and basil; and the Pork Sausage Pizza - with braised mustard greens, farm egg and pecorino. The thin, crispy crust with just enough toppings was a fan favorite. Taking "them home to the kids"..... not so much. As the server was picking up the last of the dishes our friend was not going to give up the few slices left... Indaco is one of those restaurants that you hate to say too many good things about for fear that it will become to difficult to get a reservation in the future. We went last Sunday for a birthday brunch and we had the best experience start to finish! Our waiter, Alex (with the glasses) took fabulous care of us! The food was to die for. I ate here last night for restaurant week and it was freaking awesome. They basically offered their regular menu but you choose three courses for $35. I've become a little skeptical on restaurant week because most restaurants I've eaten at have a "dummied down" menu for the deal and I feel disappointed thinking I should have just ordered from their standard menu. This wasn't the case at Indaco. Two of us split the burrata, pizza with Brussels, apple and honey, ravioli with pesto and butter beans, baked chicken, and two desserts. All the food was absolutely delicious and we were stuffed. Well well worth the $35. My favorite was the pizza and the burrata. I've never had a pizza with Brussels, ricotta, honey, and apples but I would eat that gladly every day. Their crust is crispy and they know what their doing. read more

I took my friend Sydney G. out to Indaco for her birthday! Coincidentally, her birthday occurs during restaurant week. We went to Indaco intending to do the restaurant week menu but our waitress (who was very nice and attentive) talked us into the chef-curated, family style meal and I'm really glad she did! It ended up being four courses showcasing a wide variety of dishes at the restaurant and it was really fun not knowing what was coming next. Our first course came with two dishes: Pickled shrimp with squash, eggplant puree, and salsa rossa Chanterelle salad with farro, almonds, kale, red onion, and ricotta, topped with a farm egg I am not a huge shrimp fan, but I'll try anything once and I wasn't a complete hater. I'm sure anyone who likes shrimp AND pickles would have loved the pickled shrimp. They would make for a great twist in a shrimp cocktail. The vegetables in this dish, though, were fresh, flavorful, and complemented each other very well. The Chanterelle salad was really good, although the oatmeal-y texture might put some people off. I am a sucker for anything with a poached egg on top, so I was sold. There was some kind of stalk on this dish that looked kind of like asparagus but wasn't and I can't find it via Google searches. Because it looked like asparagus, I wanted it to taste like asparagus and was disappointed when it didn't. I could have done without whatever edible plant that was. Course Two consisted of: Sweetcorn pizza with pork tesa Agnolotti with milk braised pork and shitake mushrooms Yes to both of these things, always and forever. The pizza's ingredients balanced sweet, savory, and spicy perfectly. The agnolotti was rich and meaty and I should have stopped eating here but didn't. This was my favorite course. Course Three was: Whole roasted mackerel on raddicchio & arugula salad with Calabrian chili, and grilled lemon Fall Vegetables including parsnip, sweet onion, celeriac, that non-asparagus veggie, other stuff, squash puree Why and how was I still eating at this point? I do not know. The whole roasted mackerel, although I'm sure prepared to perfection, was not my thing. I don't really like fish with a strong flavor and the mackerel had a pretty aggressive fish taste. I really enjoyed taking pictures of it though. The salad was also VERY hot. They were not playing around with that chili. The vegetables were the winner of this course. Roasted just right with a variety of sweet and savory veggies plus a pickled onion on the side. If I could make vegetables like that, I would get more than my five a day regularly. And the final dish (still eating, don't judge): Toasted Almond Budino with salted caramel and chocolate shortbread The salted caramel was amazing! If I was not about to explode from all of the food, I would have enjoyed this a LOT more, so my tip would be to not eat like you're trying to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records so you can savor your dessert. I had a really great time exploring all of these dishes at Indaco. The dishes I did not like were because of personal preference, not anything on the chef's side. I would recommend being open minded and trying new things, but I would not recommend eat that amount of food in one sitting. Went with two friends for dinner during restaurant week. I had been wanting to try this place so when we walked in with no reservation and they said there was room on the pateo I was thrilled. We started with a cocktail that was delicious! I forget what it was called but it had gin and an orange juice ice cube that was awesome. The restaurant week "deal" was one pizza or anti pasta, one entree, and one desert for $45. I asked if it could be split between two people and was told no. To start I got the margarita pizza. It was a FULL pizza way too much food for appetizer for one. But it was tasty and I had to stop myself from eating more then one piece so I could eat my other courses. Second I got a pasta dish with lamb. This was awesome. The flavors where spot on and just melted together into the perfect bite! I am in love with this dinner! But again it was a big portion and I only ate about half. For desert I had already set my sites on zepoles with lemon curd only to have my dreams dashed because they where not part of the "deal". I had decided on that before I even ordered my meal and was extremely disappointed especially since I had mentioned it to the waiter. I ended up with the chocolate moose which was ok. Our server was friendly and offered recommendations. Though he had a friendly demeanor the service was terrible. * nothing flowed well from corse to corse * no flexibility * dropped off check early without asking if we would like it split (party of 3) * passed out leftover and they were all marked with our seats but when I got home I had the wrong food! * had two waiters at one point with no explanation kinda like they shared us... Yes yes yes yes yes. Come here, even if you have to suck it up and take a 5:45 reservation like we did. It will be worth it. We went to Charleston for a long weekend at the last minute and were pretty hasty in some of our dinner reservation decisions. One awesome thing we decided to do was a chefs kitchen tour with Charleston Culinary Tours which introduced us to Indaco. We got to hang out a bit with chef T (the pasta man) and ask questions. He discussed the restaurant, the food, and his role. And while talking, we got to watch him make some of their hand-made pasta. It was that moment I decided we needed to eat there. So we walked outside, I cancelled our other reservations for the following evening and took whatever I could get at Indaco - which wound up being 5:45 pm. When our reservation rolled around the next day, we found out they seated us at the chefs table (score!) so we could watch everything. I've worked in several restaurants so I love that stuff. We decided to follow all the previous Yelp suggestions and do the chefs choice menu for $45/person. BEST DECISION EVER. What followed was 4 courses (a total of 7 dishes) of perfect. I hate mayonnaise and mentioned it so they made sure to work around - no aioli on top of things, etc. It was perfect. We left stuffed and incredibly happy. It was the perfect dining experience. And since it took a couple hours for the meal, by the time we got out it was almost 8 and we had time to walk King street before the sunset. I cannot recommend Indaco highly enough. My friends and I ended up here last minute after a change in plans. It was packed on a Thursday night without a reservation We ended up sitting at the bar which was perfect (offers a full menu). We were overwhelmed by the menu with so many choices. We had the fried artichoke (flash fried, not battered) and it was amazing, light & crispy. We ordered the burrata that was cooked perfectly and has this hot spicy chili oil on it that was delicious. We also had the zucchini pizza which I highly recommend. It also has the chili oil on it as well, which is fantastic. The staff was amazing and attentive. Upon serving, they explained each dish with the ingredients and how it was cooked. Love these restaurants where you are dying to taste lots of things on the menu - Indaco is one of them. And, we all had different options which was the favorite. First off, our waitress was incredibly sweet and knowledgeable about the menu as well as Charleston. Would give her a shout out if I could remember her name but she was delightful. Chicken dish was prepared well - but you absolutely must have a pizza. The crust is as it should be crisp and not chewy. They do a wonderful job on the pastas and salads as well - we shared it all. Our server recommended doing pastas for our dinner as they are all house made, we did the tagitalli, anglotti, and black ink pasta and they were all delicious. I don't understand the hype. We had a large group of about 16 people, split between two tables. Hence, we managed to taste nearly the whole menu. The pizza was terrible, crust so hard that it could puncture my mouth if I bit into it without caution. The pesto was the worst pesto I have ever had! It was completely bland, unsalted and it tasted like they forgot to add the Parmesan cheese to the recipe. My husband got the bolognese and it was good, so we ordered more. We also tried the highly recommended roasted chicken and it was average at best. Wow we had such a wonderful evening at this Upper King Street gem. Six of us wandered down after enjoying cocktails at the lovely 492 to celebrate a friend's birthday since we just didn't want the evening to end early. The gracious hostesses at Indaco arranged their reservations to accommodate our party of six, which became 10 before the dinner ended, but it was no inconvenience to the staff who welcomed our additions with warm smiles and open menus. The menu of rustic Italian cuisine seemed to have something for everyone, but the take home message is: order the wood-fired pizza. The prosciutto di parma is a plentiful starter, but the apples served were a bit mealy, and no one enjoys pilfy fruit at a fine dining establishment. I enjoyed the black pepper tagliatelle, which was a rich flavor but a surprisingly limited portion. The pork chop was beautifully cooked, but the hands-down winners of the night were the wood-fired pizzas; I tried the margherita! Italian for "Indigo," this cool restaurant is decorated more with muted blacks, grays and whites, all warmed by the wood tones of the wide-plank floors and butcher block dining tables. The open kitchen is framed with planks of reclaimed wood that speak to the rustic flavor of the classic Italian cuisine. This is a lovely dining experience, and I look forward to future visits to sample more of the hand-crafted pastas, house-made cured meats and of course the Negroni on tap! read more

Our group of 12 had reservations on a Saturday night. We got the chef-curated family style table, warning the restaurant in advance that we had one vegetarian and one guest with dairy & egg allergies. We were seated on the patio, where there are a few fans to keep the air circulating on a sultry August night. First course was generous - pizzas, salads, and burrata. They brought a variety of pizzas. The flavor was good, though the crust was a little soft in the middle, and the topping combinations weren't really my cup of tea. The salads and antipasti were my favorite dishes of the night: the burrata was served with fruit and granola (I've more often seen it served with savory accompaniments) and was quite good. The shrimp and watermelon salad was a big hit at the table. The house salad featured smoked ricotta on the plate, underneath crisp greens and peppers. Next was the pasta and entrees. Though a plate was brought especially to our friend with the dairy & egg allergy, saying it was specifically for her, the head server then said "everything is family style". And that dish definitely was covered in cheese... The pastas that I tasted were good, especially the black pepper tagliatelle (like a carbonara) and the cacao nib papardelle (with duck ragu). The whole roasted branzino was surprisingly spicy in a good way, with nice texture. And lastly, as we were groaning from the heat and fullness of all the food, was the dessert, a platter that featured pretty much everything other than the zeppole, which came in their own basket. I'm used to zeppole with chocolate, so the lemon curd was a nice twist, though it could've used some more tartness to really enliven and cleanse my palate after so many other heavy dishes in the summer swelter. The service was meh - they didn't seem to want to deal with us or our special requests, and they didn't seem prepared as a team, but they did split the checks evenly as we'd requested, and added the required gratuity to the final bills that were signed. First on my list of things to do once my fiancée and I finally got out of the car from the 7 hour drive from Richmond was to visit Indaco, a place many friends had both frequented and recommended once I told them plans for my weekend getaway to Charleston. Now, I'm completely unsure as to why they suggested such a place as I left Richmond to avoid the same lack of attention and sense of welcome that often accompanied me whenever I would leave the comfort of my own home to dine out. Never before have I been told by a hostess that I had a time limit on eating. Never. Unfortunately, this was the expectation that was laid out to us - that we'd leave within an hour of sitting. Reluctantly, we agreed as we'd heard such good things about the food, the interior space, and the knowledgable waitstaff. I was offended beyond belief that one of many empty tables in the restaurant just happened to be the one that needed to be empty by 7:15 - as if the bar, other tables, and an entirely other room with empty tables weren't available. How would anybody reasonably be done with two courses and drinks on a busy Friday night in an hour? Is our money not as good as everyone else's in this establishment? After being seated, we watched as our waitress served all of her tables EXCEPT for us in quick succession. And after an initial 10 minutes of waiting to be helped, were able to put in our drink order. By that time, the clock was ticking on our ability to both finish and enjoy our meal and so we were ready to order our entrees as well. Little did we know that once we put in our cocktail and wine request, our waitress would disappear for some 20 or so minutes from OUR table but still seemingly find some way to serve every single other table she was tending to MULTIPLE times. Finally, we witnessed her serve a table close to us before coming back with our drinks and were embarrassed to realize that we hadn't been wanted at Indaco in the first place. We had a reservation but arrived about 20mins early. They had a table available for us (even on a Friday night) so it was perfect. We split the chopped salad and all enjoyed it. The black spaghetti was a hit but the other 2 dishes didn't wow and had smaller portion sizes (one was on the salty side). Overall though we enjoyed the food and ambiance. read more
