This is my first time with Tandoor in Middletown but based on glamour reviews of their food by Jon R (look him up!) I decided to pick up meal while passing by. I went with traditional lamb biriyani and Pudina naan bread. For starters, their menu is very diverse. Just the bread section alone and consume you for long hours - which a good thing, the more you can try, the more you experience. Delivery was prompt and food well packaged - definitely somebody put care into wrapping naan correctly. For those that don't find joy in Biriyani, it's a rice based dish (often basmati) with meat like lamb, goat, chicken, beef or shrimp (I got the lamb). The aromas and flavors of ghee, nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon ginger or chilies stand out, with exotic spices like saffron. Often you find vegetables as well like onions and potatoes. Meat cooked perfectly, tender and flavorful. Ordered portion should feed 3-4 people comfortably (as dish is filling) or leave one person leftovers for next 2 days - yay to next day and yet another one :-) Garlic sauce is a nice compliment if you go with the spicy variety (like me). The tamarind chutney was decent but too thin and runny for my liking. I don't enjoy mint chutney so I can't speak on Curry House's. The Tandoori Wings were full of spices but not hot spicy. It was more of a flavorful addition. It came with a side of hot sauce that wasn't anything special; tasted like Frank's Red Hot to me and I didn't use it. The Chicken Momos were so good. They're steamed and the inside was juicy and full of flavor! It came with a tomato chutney (cold) but it honestly didn't need a sauce at all. Chicken Saag was delicious but my favorite dish was the Shrimp Jalfrezi! Nothing beats that tomato base sauce with all the spices. We got our spice level "medium" and it was perfect for us. You can feel the heat but still enjoy all the flavors of the dishes. Garlic naan was a great vehicle to clean our plates to leave no sauce behind. Service was great. The ambiance is spacious and minimalistic. Their parking lot is one way so it can be tricky if someone goes out in the wrong direction (happened to us) where you have to go out of your way to get back into the proper direction to pull in. Not at all a thick layer like grinders at other places have piled on. I opened it up to see and realized that I would need at least a triple amount of meat that was in there. The pastrami was tasty and fresh but really way too thin of a layer of meat to make a good grinder. Then it was too much bread and not balanced out with the fillings inside. All in all, I would just order a pizza next time and ask for extra meat. Also this place is located next to a halal grocery market, Asian grocery, so you can shop while you wait. The Biryani was a full tray, but it doesn't make up for being overcharged and under-served. Honestly, I've lost hope in Desi restaurants. Sorry, but this place is just not for me. I have a big family, and none of us will be coming back--this wasn't even my party, but it left a lasting impression. Save your money and stick to something reliable like Subway.
