I had dinner at this place for a few couple of times. I tasted the Lamb dishes and the a few vegetarian dishes. Items were tasty, fresh and mouth-watering. I asked if they serve Halal and they told me that only the Lamb is Zabiha Halal. Thanks to their honesty, since almost all the places use to claim that they serve everything Halal. For being in a strip mall the ambiance is nice. Went during dinner service because they are opened until 10pm. Appetizer was the non vegetarian platter. It ranged from spicy to mild. 8$ We ordered plain Naan they brought it out hot and fresh with the meal. 3$ We had the butter chicken. The sauce was a rich sauce but the chicken was just little bits. The sauce was full of these little chicken bits. 15$ Next dish was shrimp korma the sauce was delicious but only had 7 shrimp in 2 cups of sauce. 27$ It was served in adorable metal dishes. I ordered some lamb samosas and chicken tikka masala for dinner. I feel like maybe I was there on an off night given the reviews are generally favorable. The samosas were dry as a bone, the chicken also extremely dried out and the tikka masala seemed like it was a can of Campbells tomato soup with a little bit of greens sprinkled in--utterly bland. How does this place stay in business? The food here is horrible. I have had better food from the food cart. The lamb samosa was dry to the point I choked one down...water, bite, water, bite... The flavor was good but it was like eating lamb dirt. I also had the Chicken Tikka Masala. Great flavor and sauce. The chicken was awful. It was like they had chicken lying around, threw some pieces in a bowl and then poured sauce on it. I think that the chicken was boiled and all the life/flavor went down the drain. We've been to India Gate couple times and always had great experience. Friendly staff, yummy food and nice ambience. Yesterday for my sons birthday, for the first time we gave a bigger order. Tried the lunch buffet. Very average Indian food that tastes just like any other Indian buffet restaurant food. Nothing special. I had some higher expectations as this place opened up again after a hiatus. The pulao was overdone with spices, the plain rice was not fluffy, the naan bread was sitting out so had gotten chewy and we had reached right after 12 pm so it wasn't too late. Bombay House on the other side of the bridge (over I-90) wins in this respect as they bring fresh naan to the table. However, India Gate also serves meat dishes. The tandoori chicken looked too artificially red and dry to try. The butter chicken was passable. There was another chicken curry that tasted just like the butter chicken with some additions, not sure what it was as I forgot to look. The kadhi (yogurt and chickpea flour curry) was too spicy and the pakodas (fried chickpea fritters) swimming in it too chewy. Maybe I am picky because I regularly cook Indian food. But India Gate was nothing special. I know my mom would be appalled if someone called this good Indian food! My lunch companion asked for the check as we were in a hurry to get back to work so we were brought the check, but the server also started removing my plate while I was still eating from under me. He literally lifted the plate from the table while my fork was still in mid-air as I was eating off the plate, so he asked me for my fork too. I hurriedly ate the food off it and gave him the fork. It was so astounding that I didn't even think of asking him to not take away my plate, I only realized after it was gone! My lunch companion was as puzzled as me about his haste, as the restaurant wasn't too busy. Since it was a buffet, I could have certainly gotten more but all I wanted to do was finish what was already on my plate. Oh well! The 3-star rating is for the food only, I won't judge it by this isolated service experience! Hopefully, they don't repeat this with other diners. I'll probably end up going here again since I work in the area so I hope next time I have a better experience. Update: Went to this restaurant a couple more times for lunch and the quality of food had improved noticeably and I've learned to ask for fresh naan. They even have soft serve icecream included, but honestly I try not to go back for a second plate as it can be too much for lunch, so definitely no icecream or dessert for me. I do like the fact that they have a lot of veg and meat choices from 2-3 kinds of chicken, lamb and more. But now they increased prices that come to $15 for lunch, that's too much! read more

I convinced one of my co-workers (who is Indian) to come with me here so she can tell me what is good. I've only had indian food twice in my entire life and each time I don't know what I'm choosing so I figure the best way is to go with someone that actually knows the food. It was a lunch buffet so we got up to the line and my co-worker showed me each different sauce and what it goes with. I followed her direction and loaded up my plate. My favorite was their naan and tikki masala chicken together. mmm.. But the other dishes were just okay. Nothing fantastically tasting according to my friend. We were told this is what we have which was stone cold naan. We literally told 4 different people for it but they paid no heed. We ended up leaving and felt as if they were doing us a favor my serving food. I would never recommend anyone to eat there even if it's given free of charge. After scouring the reviews here on Yelp and elsewhere, we decided to give this place a shot for dinner. Very friendly service, and the atmosphere was comfortable. We ordered 2 chicken dishes, and 2 onion kulchas. We requested 1 star, minimal spice. When the food came, my husband took the first bite. He was like "whoooo it's spicy". I took a bite, and sure enough, it was spicy and not just his imagination. I'm not sure what happened, either the waiter didn't convey that we wanted minimal spice, or we just got some of what was made for a previous customer and they didn't tweak the spice level? (we went after 8pm). The onion kulcha was not fresh, and must have been made earlier as well. When the waiter came to ask how everything was, I said the food was a bit spicy. He said something about how North Indian food is spicy ... well, I wonder how the food would've been at 2 or 3 stars - probably enough to burn our tongues off. :p The food also sits heavy in my stomach - it must've been cooked in a lot of oil - not fun to be feeling like this 4 hours after eating. :( read more

This is one of the best Indian restaurants in the area, and I go to a lot of Indian places. Seriously. I've not gone to the lunch buffet, but the dishes change regularly. Generally it's very meaty though so vegetarians might want to order off the menu. Lets talk about the paneer, ok? It's so fluffy and non-chewy/ non-greasy. It's some high quality cheese, for sure. YUM! Order the potato naan!!! Mmmmm.... The Paneer Tikka Masala was awesome and spiced perfectly, ordered with the Shahi paneer (one of the few places you can get this lovely dish in the area) and you've got the perfect pairing!! The Shahi is a slightly sweetish curry for those of you unfamiliar with it, and the paneer is crushed (not big square chunks of it). The nuts in it are also crushed so you dont get a nutty vibe at all, it just adds a nice depth to the flavor. I HIGHLY recommend the Shahi Paneer. The spices in the chai were subtle and ok... but it was a little too milky for my liking. Service was excellent and the place was clean. read more

Went for sit-down dinner during Thanksgiving weekend, where they offered 15% off due to the holiday. Excellent food: tasty, just spicy enough with 2/5 stars spiciness, and decent portion sizes. The garlic naan was particularly light and fluffy, which I liked. Their menu has a picture of India and its states and capitals, which is a fun conversation piece, and indicates which region the restaurant's influences are from. Full disclosure: I typically don't enjoy eating Indian food but I do like Butter Chicken, which is what I ordered from India Gate. Based on the multitude of 4-5 star reviews, I was expecting to be blown away. Surely even a dish as simple as Butter Chicken must be divine, right? Meh. It was just OK. The chicken curry Is amazing and level 6 spicy left my mouth on fire but I couldn't stop eating haha. For appetizers, Big portions for the Veggie Pakora but small portion for the Panner Pakora. Doesn''t make sense why you would pay more for less... At least make the Paneer Pakor cheaper or slightly bigger considering for 3.99$ the Veggie Pakora is a mountain of food. The main courses came with a nice big bowl of rice but for some reason the chicken Tika Masala came in a slightly smaller bowl than the Lamb Vindaloo. If they are the same price why is one smaller? For 13$ each that's not an excuses nor is it an excuse for dry and hard lamb in the vindaloo. The sauces in each were excellent, especially the tika, but the difference in portion sizes is concerning. The Mango Lassi was excellent as well as the naan! Service was pretty slow and they just gave us the boxes without even asking if they could do it for us. for 50$ dinner I would hope they would box it for you since it wasn't even busy. Nor did they ask how the food was until the meal was over. Conclusion - GO FOR LUNCH BUFFET. Much cheaper,less issues, food is nearly as good. The buffet offering was not large; however, the food was very fresh and delightful. I tried just about everything that it offered. The overall restaurant is a great lunch spot; however, it's not fine dining. The buffet line was crowded and moved slowly in the packed restaurant. They offer pretty standard indian buffet fare at a standard price, with really tasty paneer and pakoras I really like, however they also have butter chicken in sauce that tastes almost exactly like Campbell's tomato soup. Their buffet options change all the time, so you won't always have the same thing if you go frequently. The service is very friendly, too. One thing they could improve on is the layout- it gets very crowded at lunchtime due to the corporate offices nearby, and the entry is shared with the cashier and buffet line. read more

I'm not a fan of buffets in general as not only has the food been sitting exposed for so long but also because it's usually leftovers from the day before.
