The dining room was pretty quiet, which makes me think this spot does a lot of takeout. We ordered the butter chicken, tikka masala, and both the garlic and cheese naan. The curries were flavorful and satisfying. The only miss was the naan , it was difficult to tell the difference between the garlic and cheese since there was very little cheese and very thin.. We had a fantastic family dinner celebrating our son's graduation at India Mahal. The restaurant is in a small strip mall and it's pretty unassuming. It's a small place, but we had made reservations. The owner has been in business for over 20 years in University Place. We shared garlic naan, chicken curry, butter chicken, saag paneer, some good Indian beer - and to top it off I brought some Kheer home. Everything was freshly made and so delicious! Punjabi Punjabi. We ordered Shahi paneer and garlic naan with mango lassi and cha. All the food was very fresh. The paneer was house made. Naan was not overly oily like in most places. Cha was very good and the star was really the mango Lassi, probably some of the best we've ever had. If you're in the Tacoma area I definitely recommend! Let me start out by saying service was amazing! People there were really cool. However, I don't go out to eat and spend $40 on a meal just for the service. I ordered the butter chicken, garlic naan and vegetable samosas. All of the food was bland. I've been eating Indian food for a very long time and this was by far the most i've ever been disappointed with the food. Just no flavor, especially in the samosas which I paid a whopping $8 for 2. In the butter chicken dish, rice was very mushy, chicken was actually nice and tender, but the curry in the dish was so bland and WAY too spicy when I just asked for medium. Unfortunately I also found facial hair in my food. Sucks. Sadly, I will not EVER return. If the business is reading this, please take this advice and just focus more on the food. Best Indian food I've tried in town! Beyond the great taste, takeout service was super quick and friendly!

This was hands down the greatest Indian food I have ever had! I got the chicken tikka masala, which I find is hard to mess up and always a safe bet, but this dish was extraordinary. Medium spice was perfect. I like sweet naan and ordered the Kashmiri (I think...that's what it's called) and it is the best naan I've ever had. The texture of it being flakey and toasted, sweet with the coconut is so yummy! The restaurant is very clean and quiet and pretty quaint. The service was fast and friendly - they leave you with a pitcher of water so they don't have to refill you which I like. Other drink choices as well as desserts are limited. I always order water so not an issue for me, and I was too full after this visit to think about dessert. I had enough food to have for left overs and it reheated delicious all the same. They've been in UP for 20 years and I am so glad they are here. I would like to explore something new to try next time to see how it levels up with my first visit but I am not very familiar with many of their dishes. Today we didn't want to cook the day before Thanksgiving and he wanted to give this place shot. We got the Kashmiri Naan. It was so burnt that we had to throw it away. Filthy!!! Filthy!!! Filthy!!! This place needs to be shutdown!!! There is no such thing as health codes in this place! Stay away! We decided not to eat the food served because it was so hideous. So we asked for to go boxes while the owner was cleaning other tables with his cart. The table cleaning cart, food serving cart, and to go box cart is the same cart and not cleaned between uses. Even worse the owner started to put our left over food in the to go containers that had dirty plates touching everything. He did not use utensils to transfer the food. He used his dirty hands!!! He did not care he just did it. We should of left on the spot when we came in. Our water glasses were dirty. Instead of taking the first ones back to the kitchen the owner just switched then with another table. Now some other customer will get them. The food was gross. You can tell no one else in the restaurant liked the food. Some of the food was old while the tandoori mixed grill was WTF! The place is real dumpy too. I love this spot! I traveled in India for 9 months back in my 20's, and this food took me directly back there! You know how a smell or a taste can do that? It's incredibly authentic and incredibly delicious food. Make sure to try the veggie samosa - the filling is bursting with flavor and the outer pastry is always perfectly deep fried to order. My husband surprised me with a meal of Chicken Tikka from here. I was excited to try it because he kept raving bout how good this place is. Whoever stole my husbands 'taste buds'--kindly return them! No charges will be filed. Just put them on the porch...and leave. Please and thank you. First off: I know EXCELLENT Indian cuisine. I know GOOD...Indian Cuisine. I know BAD Indian Cuisine. Well enough to understand that, when I see the sauce/gravy is 'broken or curdled' (through the lid) and worse once removed, people trust me--that is a SURE sign of failure in these dishes. Yogurt breaks if not incorporated & cooked properly. The other issue is, there is wayyyyy too many onions and bell peppers. The sauce should be thick, fragrant and deep ehhh...'burnt orange-red'. Creamy with a deep flavor of those beautiful spices. This stuff here... ain't NONE of that. This here is BAD Indian Cuisine. Due to their 'lack of personality' and the unsightly 'larg-ish' gnat' floating in my beloved 'Mango Lassi' a few years back--I don't go to Lakewood's 'Great Cuisine of India' any longer. Shame too cuz... This here was GOOD Indian Cuisine. Their food is 2 stars Xtra & much, MUCH better than this place. Muuuuch better. I'm not one who would hold the gnat issue against such a place. They know their spices & the applications in cooking their specialties. My favorites, in no specific order, are the Gosht Vindaloo, Lamb Biryani, Chicken Biryani, and Chicken Tikke Masala. This review occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic and so the review is based only on the food we have gotten during take out. I've tried this place a couple times now but haven't been super impressed. The take out portions are relatively small in comparison to other local Indian restaurants. The saag was a little watery. The lamb curry was too sour and also the curry wasn't thick enough. Spice level however was on point! Roganjosh is one of my favorite dishes but theirs was just okay... the flavor wasn't what I remembered from my authentic Indian food experiences overseas and I was left without feeling like I got my cravings fulfilled. The last time I got Indian food was two years ago, and it was at another place in town and was rather lackluster. My wife and I went to India Mahal for a little date lunch today, and were at first worried they were closed. The chairs were still up, and they hadn't opened for in-restaurant dining just yet, but the nice young man at the cash register said they would soon. That was fine. The mask mandate is down on the first, and everyone is just trying to find their way through it. We ordered take away because the food smelled amazing! We ordered plain naan, butter chicken, gosht curry, and two mango lassi's. As an aside, the young man behind the cash register and the older man that were cooking were both incredibly nice to my wife, who is visibly transgender. We both are, but most folks don't clock me right away. Neither gentlemen even looked twice at us and talked and joked with us like that wasn't even an issue. I am including that tidbit here, because if you are visibly trans, you know it can sometimes be dicey going to a new restaurant because you never know how you will be received. So 5 out of 5 stars on treating us both like human beings. This place seems safe for trans folks. We got our take away quickly and took it home. There was enough food for four meals for my wife and I. We guessed at medium spicy, and that was at the upper limit of what our very bland white tastebuds could handle. However, I think I am in love. This is the best India food that I have gotten in years. I ate a gigantic plate of food, and I still have enough curry and rice for tomorrow's lunch. If you break down the price by 4 meals instead of 2, this is super affordable. I can't recommend this place enough. read more

A friend of mine and I decided to have a late lunch on football Sunday. The place was not busy, which we enjoyed. The food was great! We had veggie samosas (havent seen them this large in awhile) that came with the sweet sauce and the chutney that was delicious. We had their lamb curry, garlic naan, aloo palak (spinach and potatoes), and their Bhindi masala (okra)....& their chai tea. We had a big plate of rice too. EVERYTHING was amazing and definitely did not disappoint us. We had plenty of food to take home. The owner was super nice. Great customer service...will ABSOLUTELY be coming back here again. On Saturday, June 30, I did a take out order of Saag paneer and nan. I've been eating Indian food for more than 30 years all over the world and this was the saddest tasting food I've ever had. The Saag paneer was edible but that is the only positive thing I can say for it. It was the most bland tasting meal I've ever had. I didn't think it was possible to mess up Saag paneer and it is like the cook forgot some spices. I had a craving for Indian food one night, so I called ahead to pick up from this place. Big mistake. Upon entering, the place seemed dirty. The cook was not wearing a mask (I know it is very hot in kitchens, but I had YET to see an unmasked chef while getting takeout). The cashier (whom I presume was also the owner) did not wash his hands between running my card/handling another customer's money and preparing some juice blend. But the straw that broke the camel's back was when I saw him place two slabs of raw meat in a pot, then immediately assemble my to-go bag. The bag broke when I took it up to my apartment, and my food splattered on the floor. Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise meant to save me from a bout of food poisoning. This was a random last minute lunch date with the hubster. We were actually going to a different restaurant, but plans got canceled and we were already ready to go so we got on Yelp and came across this option. It is part of mini shopping center area that also had Dominoes pizza and I think a bakery and some other restaurant. Limited parking, just a heads up. We pull up, park and head in. It is a very clean restaurant with a good amount of seating on the inside. The host (possible owner also?) came to greet us and sat us down. He gave us water to start and gave us ample time to view the menu. I wanted to try the roti but unfortunately they were out, so I got veggie samosas, eggplant bharta and rice. Hubby actually got the same exact thing except he got some kind of chicken appetizer and naan as well. I thought everything tasted wonderful!
