There are numerous chains of South Asian grocery stores (that carry food from many countries in that area of the globe). Some of them have hot cases, with fresh vegetarian food to go, or with a few tables, to dine in. Other stores are only for groceries. If you look around at numbers, this ethnic cohort, has the most locations in the SFV, Los Angeles, Simi and Thousand Oaks vicinities. Because of this, India Sweets and Spices, on Sherman Way and Topanga, is worth a trip.....to pick up ingredients, if and when I am in the mood to do some in house cooking :) This location also has a fresh vegetarian hot case every day, with several enticing, nutritious and tasty vegetarian selections of North Indian and South Indian food. There are also tables to dine in. On the grocery side, you can get some of these spices at supermarket chains like Ralph's, Vons, Whole Foods and the like. But none of these statewide chains will be able to come close or compete with these South Indian grocery establishments that are often, mom and pop joints. Supermarkets give you small quantities of spices for exorbitant prices. On the other hand, these smaller grocery stores have a very high degree of freshness, intoxicating fragrance, at a comparatively steal of a price in their products. And the smallest bag bought here, can last you for a long time. These are the places to go for superb intoxicating selections of turmeric, dried red chilies, fenugreek, fresh curry leaves, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, coriander powder, paprika, cardamom, fennel, and the like. If you are fond of okra, the best quality and freshness is in these stores. They also have the smaller red onions. And try some of the vast array of packaged and unique snacks (one of my favorites is the salted fried green peas), when you're tired of eating all the brands of potato chips :) read more

I'm so confused. Is this place going out of business? There is nothing on the shelves. There are aisles and aisles with nothing on them when the refrigerated section has nothing in it. I haven't been here probably in a year and a half, and back then the store looked plentiful and robust. But it's so dark in there now and there's nothing on the shelves. It is the most depressing place. This was a ghost town today and I even asked the guy if they were going out of business he's like no. Like am I crazy like they're literally have nothing on the shelves like shelf after a shelf aisle after aisle there was like nothing there. So weird. read more

A vegetarian food court in the Indian Sweets & Spices market. The worker was welcoming and the service was quick since the dishes I chose were pre-made. I ordered the plate, which comes with 2 vegetables, choice of rice, and chapati. I'm honestly not sure of the specific name of my vegetables, but they were delicious! The orange paneer was my favorite; it had a nice kick of spice. The green paneer was different but also tasty; it had more of a spinach taste and texture. Overall, very delicious and affordable! Store looks bare and empty, idk if they're about to close permanently? But we ordered mango lassi and they were not good to the point that we threw them away and got more from another restaurant nearby. It didn't taste right as if mango juice was mixed and no yogurt. Store was in deplorable condition and dirty, it smelled mildewy and moldy and that hits you as soon as you step in. Been going here for years. More recently the perception is - how they treat you is a function of whether you speak or look Punjabi; if you do you get a better service, if you don't well it's poor. I just stood there for 15 minutes waiting for the guy to fulfil my order and he continued casual conversation with people coming in Punjabi and fulfilling their orders and kept telling me he'll get to me "right now" It's sad - I love this place but am never coming back again. Have been buying here for years. Good selection, and also somewhat good food. Only thing is, every time I go, if I'm not watching what they are typing in the register, they always overcharge- cheat, and take advantage that I didn't look. If I ask the price before they type it, then thats what they input, if I don't and for a moment turn my eyes away, the bill is inflated by $10-$15. I have lived in India for a while in the past. the one thing is that they don't think of tomorrow, only of now, what they can grab in the moment, irregardless what will happen tomorrow. I'm not saying all markets and restaurants are the same. And yet, with this place it's a pattern of lying and swindling, which I don't appreciate one bit. Today was the last day I will go there, as I don't need to look behind my back at a business which honors it's customers (or anywhere else I choose to spend my money at, or befriend). For a small container or rice, small dhal, bag of snack, a little bit of pakora, and 3 bars of soap: $45?? Too bad I didn't even get the receipt, they kept it. My whole family enjoys their food. It's kind of spicy but good spicy. Their prices have gone up like every other place. Try their large samosas for $1.49 (ask for both tamarind and green chutney). They are uneducated people. Staff members are unresponsive and seemed disinterested to assist customer. Despite store being not that busy. I was waiting in the line to pay for but cashier started counted the cash. He literally ignored me. I left the store feeling frustrate. Please do not go to this place. On my journey to find Rose syrup and rose water...I decided to check out India Sweets and Spices on Sherman Way and Topanga. With plenty of parking on the street and in the back...I ventured in! The place is clean and big! I found exactly what I needed and then I was greeted by the amazing aroma of India food! I was not hungry but that never stops me and I made a beeline to the restaurant section! I ordered the $7.99 lunch special...with so many choices...and to my delight it was all vegetarian and some of the best I've ever had! A customer suggested their tea and provided me with a sample...which I promptly ordered as well! Everything was delicious..fresh, mildly spiced and perfect! Had a couple of vegetables along with a little bit of lemon rice yesterday for lunch. The Matter paneer was really tasty and the owner was very generous with the portion. Amazing Indian food ever! This is an Indian restaurant within an Indian grocery store. During our 2 day LA trip, we ate 3 times there. Loved the food that much and we tried: 1. Makke ki roti and sarsoon ka saag: Makke ki roti is so delicious that we have never eaten such a thing in entire SF bay area. It is crunchy, soft with good amount of oil. 2. Aloo vada with chutney: Delicious 3. Kachori with Chana: This is really unique as have never eaten Kachori with chana or chole. 4. Fried papad: Needless to say it was delicious because it was papad and fried. What's not to love ;) 5. Masala dosa: Its portion size was so huge and it was filled with so much aloo filling. It was served with delicious sambar, coconut chutney, and tomato/peanut chutney. 6. Vegetable puff: Simply delicious. 7. Combo: Got it to go and it had rice(very soft and fresh), pakora kadhi, chole, one roti, raita, aloo tikki, chutney, and pickle. You can get samosa instead of tikki if its in stock. 8. Rabdi: Delicious dessert that was perfectly sweet. 9. Kala jamun piece: Like a donut soaked in sweet syrup. It was a bit on the sweeter side but its supposed to be sweet. Really wanted to try more items but had to head back home. Will highly recommend this place to anyone visiting LA and this neighborhood. Food is really fresh and they run out of it fast. When we went there around 5ish pm and they had all the curries. We went back around 9 pm and they ran out of lot of curries, biryani, and samosa. So there is no doubt that food is fresh. So far this has been one the best Indian restaurants in LA where you can eat as much junk food(loosely translated to Indian street food) as you want without hurting your wallet at all. We order basically everything that's possibly on the menu - Dosa, paratas, Pani puri, Paav bhaaji, Bhel puri, Chole bhatura, samosa chat, vada pav ! They have variety of desserts that you can pick from. We pick and chose four to five items every time, among three of us, not a crumb left behind ! There might be slight confusion with the orders especially if there is a lot of people, but it's all worth it because, the food here is just amazing. This place is excellent. South Indian cuisine loaded with tons of flavor. It might be considered too salty for some, but when you eat out, this is to be expected I got the lunch special which comes with 2 mains and your choice of rice. I got the chana option and the aloo gobi. I was sold on the 1st bite. I originally was planning to split up the meal into 2 meals, but I ended up eating it all. Thats how good it was. My wife felt the same way. I've been here so many times now it's hard to count. The price point is so good, the food is excellent. I get the Aloo Parantha (fresh made Indian pancake stuffed with cauliflower) pretty much every time I come plus the lunch special which is two vegetables rice pickle chapati or naan and a samosa. vegetables are changed every day and you have your choice of two out of six. Generally for me it's choice of two out of four because I don't eat dairy. The total bill comes to $12. And you're completely stuffed. Plus unlike many other places that are self-serve, they actually have a filtered water machine. If you think about it most places just use tap water and it put it in a jar. The restaurant section has about 10 or more tables and it's not the nicest thing ever but it does the job. Seems like they have water for every table and a area with utensils and napkins and such. The menu which is located on the wall features sweets, snacks(by the pound), hot foods, South Indian specials and more. For under $7 (excluding tax I believe), you can get a choice of one of three various lunch specials. Honestly, it does the job for decent cheap and tasty Indian food; if you know to expect that then all will be good. For each lunch special you get to make a choice of a vegetable dish or other item that comes with it plus the other items described with your meal. When we returned it and questioned, instead of apologizing the lady responded that they didn't make it there and it came from somewhere else.
