First the food. Everything was well prepared and attractively plated My dish had a spice level of 3 out of 4. While spicy it definitely was not overpowering I have never had a bad dish here. The naan and pandam was superb, as was the raita. Now for the atmosphere. There is nothing to draw one in. If the name was just Indian cafe , it would be better. This place is so good. It's right in downtown but parking wasn't an issue. The staff is very welcoming and friendly, it's why I love eating in here. I visited the place while spending a weekend at Massanutten. I'm so glad I found it. My husband and I love Indian and this place had amazing service from the time we walked in, up u til we left. Our waiter was the kindest and very attentive. The place was clean and quiet at the time we visited. Although, as we were leaving the place started to pick up. Food was delicious and hot. You can tell it was made fresh and boy did the flavors explode in your mouth. All in all if I'm ever back in this area I would definitely visit again. Such a warm, friendly feeling inside. We've always loved this restaurant and the food is still good, but they changed their Chicken Tikka Masala recipe which is a huge bummer. The sauce used to be more of an orange-yellow color and the chicken was sooooo fall apart tender; I used to always comment on how it was the most tender chicken you could get at any restaurant. Now the sauce is bright red and the chicken comes in huge dry chunks instead of the tender shredding. And when I say dry, I mean really dry. All of the juice and tenderness has been sucked out of it. This used to be my favorite dish here and now I just don't know if I'll want to order it again. I don't understand why they would mess with something that was already amazing -- especially to make it so much worse. :( read more

Incredibly disappointed in our experience. We have NEVER experienced such poor service at any other restaurant. People who came in after us were finished before we even obtained our food (and we were smack dab in the middle of the restaurant). The place had maybe 8 customers and three waitresses. Even with that ratio we repeatedly had to ask for our water to be refilled, another table got up and got their own water, and we had to get up and obtain our to go boxes. We waited roughly 30 minutes for our main course and even then our bread wasn't ready and we had to wait another 7 minutes for it. In regards to the food, you get very generous portions especially in regards to rice which is refreshing to see in this day and age. We told the waitress that we liked some spicy as long as it was not overpowering and would not clear out our sinuses. She recommended a "2." The "2" WILL clear out your sinuses and left my tongue feeling like it was on fire. The waitress also did not know the difference between naan and another flat bread they had on their menu. The food was meh at best. It could be that the spiciness overpowered any other taste the food had. I will say the paneer was the worst paneer I have ever had. It seems to be overly fried in oil which turns the outer 1/4 inch perimeter of the thinly cut cheese into a translucent color that is tough to chew. Last, the ambiance feels like a home from the 1970's without the wallpaper -- very blah and unwelcoming. This place has potential but the waiting staff needs to be upgraded to basic competency because if they cannot even properly serve a few customers and make appropriate recommendations based on the customer being clear regarding what they like and dislike, the experience is set up to be awful. read more

It took us forever to find this place since it's so small, but the wait was WELL worth it! What a phenomenal little hole in the wall! The lunch portion was HUGE, the naan perfectly prepared, the service extremely on point, and the food was divine! I understand that the owners are from Nepal (as others have pointed out they're extremely gregarious), but seriously-- I've eaten Indian food ALL OVER the United States and this is probably the most authentic I've had since my weekly dinner at my childhood neighbor's house. I truly don't understand how this little place isn't more busy. Recently found this spot. Perfect hole in the wall located within Court Square, typical dated Indian decor with some good dishes. Entrees are large enough to split for lunch, and if you can bear the spice whoever makes the dish knows how to spice it up if you ask. The only downfall is their Paneer, I have to disagree with anyone that says is fresh as both times I've ordered it, its been hard and and dried out. Mmmmm so good. About everything I've had has been AWESOME. Not a fan of the naan though. If the naan was better I'd go for a 5. It reminds me of costco pitas or something. Fave is the chicken saag. So freaking good. Servings are enormous. I can get one take out meal and eat it with another. Oooh and you can choose your spiciness for each entree. I like 3 1/2. This was by far and large the worst restaurant ever!!!! We were in Luray on memorial day and kind of forgot that restaurants are usually closed on that day! It was 8:20pm and we were desperately looking for a place to eat. We called this place (it was open fortunately) and placed the order for takeout and explained that we are 30 minutes away so we would barely make it to the place by the time they close and requested them to wait for 5/10 minutes if we are delayed. So far so good. We arrived at the hotel, paid for the food and went back to our place. They did not pack one of the item we requested and promptly charged us for that. We ordered "Matar Paneer" and the Paneer was BARELY cooked!! I believe it was some kind of frozen Paneer that hadn't even thawed well. There is NO WAY you could pass such a dish to anyone eating in the restaurant, but I guess they figured since we are doing a take out that too at the closing time we wouldn't look and it would be too late to complain!! We had ordered "Daal" and "Rice" and they packed both of these in one container without anything to keep the Daal separate from the rice!! I just can't believe how lousy a restaurant can get!! I usually never take the effort to go back to the hotel site and leave review (good or bad) but this was just too much to forgive and forget!!!! read more

As Winston S. noted, this restaurant has its fair share of eccentricities- the owners/cooks who speak very little english but love conversing with customers, the lack of A.C., and occasionally unpredictable spiciness. IMO, these qualities add character and adventure, in a city that has a chain restaurant on every corner. I've never had Indian food this excellent. Their Paneer Saag is otherworldly, the cheese cubes firm and fried golden, which play hide and seek in a sea of savory cooked spinach served with a more than generous helping of rice. Over the last 6 years I've searched in countless restaurants for paneer this flavorful and enticing- haven't found a contender yet. The Chicken Biryani is also excellent, savory and sweet. The old Indian couple who own the restaurant (and cook everything), had a 10 year son who died several years ago due to an accident in a swimming pool. His photo and artwork are displayed in a small area on one wall, and I get the impression that this restaurant is a connection to him and the family they once were. At the risk of sounding cliche- try their food, and you'll sense the love they put into it. read more

OMGosh, I miss this place! The owner's are not really Indian, if I remember correctly, I think they're from Nepal (as told by one of the waitstaff). Anyway, the chicken curry, paneer saag, and shahi korma is freakin' delicious! The naan is weird... it's round, and more "dough-y" than normal, but whatever, otherwise, the food there (that I've had) has been really good. The only thing I don't like about it is that you can't eat there, or else you'll come out smelling like Indian spices... HARD! Also, I agree with the others regarding the spice level. 4 is the highest and I LOVE spicy, but don't do it... you'll die... well, at least your tongue will die, haha. 2 has been pretty good for me. When we get there is takes almost 15 minutes for someone to take our order and after our food arrived we were missing parts of it and the waiter tried to tell us we were wrong. After we get our check, we pay at the counter and as we are walking away from the counter, someone who wasn't even our server was bussing our table walks up to me and my friends and says "have a great night, and for the future it's polite to tip your server." What she didn't know was that I was going to my car to get cash to tip her because I didn't want to tip on my card because I know they won't get the tip right away when it is put on your card. please fix this rude service. read more

The rice is a cheap quality flavorless rice, the curry was soupy. We ordered Naan bread and got pita bread. Lastly, they don't take debit or credit cards and I didn't know this until the check came. If you come to Harrisonburg and eat at only one restaurant, this should be the one. It's an institution for many in the Harrisonburg area, and for good reason. The food is more like Nepalese or Northern Indian, but it's all amazing. Only draw back is that it can get kinda hot in the Summer inside, but you can always call for carry out. The spice level can also be requested by number. Number 1 is the least spicy and 5 is only for the most adventurous. Also they don't take any cards, so hit the ATM up before you get there. read more

Not family-style which was a little disappointing. The level of spice and heat is designated at the time you order, on a scale of 1/2 to 4. It seems to be a little bit variable, as 2 can be very hot and medium-mild depending on the day. They have two beers, an Indian lager and an IPA. Prices were super low, and service was attentive.
