I pass through front Royal on a regular basis and I'm always looking for a new restaurant to check out. Many of the Nepali dishes are very similar to Indian with a bit of a twist. The lamb I had was cooked very nicely, but I would've liked a bit more rice. The nan was also good. read more

I was on the way to DC but didn't want to drive hungry for another hour. There's a seemingly rational thought that inside the city might be a better place to look for a niche ethnic cuisine like Nepali, but all it takes is a few good people to run a restaurant. The vibe here certainly felt like rural Virginia, while the decor emphasized Nepali national pride (with an American flag on display as well). The menu had mostly things in the general Indian sphere, but I did elect for the distinctively Himalayan dumplings, which came with ample mustard sauce and a bit of what I think was nutrella (soy protein). Ordering a samosa chaat was a good decision, and with them having given me a 1-10 spice level scale, an 8 was quite robust. A chai was small both strongly sweet and spicy. There are few bigger boosters of the DC food scene than I, but I was quite satisfied that I stopped here. read more

My wife is not a fan of spicy foods. She is skeptical of going to Indian restaurants. We got to Khukuri and she asked for the blandest dish she could get with the stipulation that it could be fed to a toddler. The waiter said that would not be a problem. When he asked how I would like my dish on a hotness scale of 1 to 10, I answered 12! I got a wonderfully spiced lamb dish. I had the Lamb Saagwala and my wife had the Butter Chicken. The service was good and the food was just delightful. The venue was quiet and enjoyable. My only knock on this place is the restrooms. They need a little more attention than they are getting. read more

Had a fabulous lunch at Khukuri. The vegetable chow mein (lo mein) was excellent, as was the garlic naan. We also loved the lamb kadhai and vegetable korma. All dishes were prepared to the level of spiciness we requested and thought the chef hit the mark on each one. We wanted to try many other dishes because everything was so delicious! The butter chicken and garlic naan were incredible! If you get the chicken wings keep in mind that we ordered a "3" heat level, expecting milder wings and they were hotter than the hottest wings almost anywhere else. Delicious, but hotter than I was expecting. read more

This was a small but roomy restaurant in Front Royal that served my party after church. The inside was clean and had Indian touches around. And Indian family and in after us so I knew that this was an authentic place to come. The meal was plentiful as we ordered something different. Everything was delicious. The naan was hot and fresh. The goat was pleasant (never had it before). It was like a fried rice! The butter chicken was creamy with a good amount of spice at level 5. The only "compliant" is that they are inconsistent in the spice level. Level 2 was spicier than level 7 in two of the tables dishes. Enjoyed it. I would go back if I was in town regularly. read more

2nd time eating here tonight. The food was delicious, portions were good (1 appetizer and 2 entrees were enough to feed 2 adults and 2 kids with some leftover), and the service was outstanding. We ordered the butter chicken (mild, a favorite of both adults and kids) and lamb korma (spice level 3-4, which had just a bit of a kick). We also ordered the Samosas (very spicy) and the bread basket. We were going to order dessert, but sadly, we did not have the room in our tummies. Funny? story- within a couple of minutes of walking in, all 4 of us had a short little cough. I've eaten at Khukuri twice, and both times, it was a 5-star experience. In round 1, I ordered butter chicken and saag paneer with naan. These are my go-to dishes, and both were generous portions - plenty of leftover. In round 2, I ordered the samosa appetizer and the chicken momos. Two fist-sized samosas come with two sauces - a sweet tamarind dip and a green (cilantro and mint) chutney. The filling has a kick but is not overwhelming spicy. The momos are tightly sealed and well shaped, flavored with onion, herbs, and curry powder. They are accompanied by an orange-colored Nepalese chutney and reheat very well, if you have leftover to take home! Although a little pricey, it seems Khukuri knows its worth. Go for the great service and a hot, hearty meal. You'll be back, and so will I! read more

Went to Khukuri Nepali Cuisine with my family. There were six of us. We all got something different and shared. Everything was good. For the most part, the menu is very similar to an Indian Restaurant. We had one surprise with the food and another surprise when it was time to pay the bill. The 2nd surprise is why I won't go back. One problem was with the goat dish that I ordered. It was a goat dish with rice and sauce that was full of pieces of bones both big and small and some were literally very sharp! I have since found out that it is not unusual for goat to be served with bones. That being the case, I think that either the menu or the waiter should have said that goat dishes are served with tiny pieces of bones. But this is not the reason I won't go back. When it was time to pay the check, one of the wait staff came to the table with an electronic payment device and insisted on holding it up at the table where everyone could see what the bill was on the device's display while I put my credit card in it and the waitress was holding it for everyone to see. Everyone saw the tip also (and it was a decent tip). This bothers me because I believe that unless you are the person paying, what the meal cost is not your business. I would have rater had the waitress take my card or pay myself at the register. I don't know if they do this to be green or so that your card stays in your possession. If the latter, I would much rather pay at the register. It is not my dinner guest's business nor is it the business of the people at other tables what my meal cost. read more

If you are not use to this type of food then you should be aware that you will need to spend a significant amount of time going through the menu here. I ordered the mixed grill. They ask you for the spicy level 0 - 10 that you want the dish made with. I requested level 3 and thank goodness I didn't get it any hotter. My mouth and stomach were still very spicy hot 30 minutes after I left the restaurant. The dish had chicken, shrimp, combo sausages of goat or lamb (don't remember which) along with onions, peas, and cabbage and carrots I think. It was all enjoyable but spicy. I felt prices were okay. No complaints on service. Good selection of libations. If I am in the area again I may stop and have another selection but won't make it a priority on getting back. read more

I don't even "like" Indian food, but we were traveling and looking for something super-flavorful and this place had good reviews. First, it has a pretty decent ambiance for a strip mall eatery, with the exception of the pink crystal chandeliers. I ordered two appetizers that sounded good, and they were! First, I took a chance on something I've never heard of -- bhel puri. It was a revelation: crunchy, juicy, spicy, and full of flavors and textures. It contains puffed rice, onions, tomatoes, and peanuts, all bathed in tangy sauce. I absolutely loved it! During lunch, I Googled all the Nepalese restaurants in my home town, and I found one that has this on the menu. I'm going to check it out. I also ordered khukuri choela, which was juicy, savory chicken grilled with ginger, garlic, and Himalayan spices. Another winner that was full of deliciousness. My husband had the gorkhali curry with goat, which was spiced differently than Indian curry. He described it as flavorful and excellent, with a little heat. Service was professional. This was a special lunch for us. We decided to order what we wanted and not worry about price, since as far as the prices are the same for lunch or dinner, it can be an expensive lunch. We ordered the Kathmand shrimp appetizer, tandoori lamb and chicken and the fish curry. We asked for spicy and we got it. Here spicy means lots of spice= lots of flavor. All 3 dishes were great and I'd recommend any of them. My favorite was the shrimp. Will order that every time I go there.
